Title: 2024 Coaching Hotseat
Post by: Texzilla on Nov 19, 2024, 01:51 PM
Let's start with ridiculous buyouts schools have saddled themselves up with.

Kirby Smart $118 million
Kalen DeBoer $70 million
Mike Norvell $63 million
Brian Kelly $61 million
Dabo Swinney $60 million
James Franklin $56 million
Matt Rhule $56 million
Steve Sarkisiam $55 million
Dan Lanning $45 million
Brent Venables $44 million
Mark Stoops $44 million
Jedd Fisch $40 million
Luke Fickell $40 million
Jonathan Smith $39 million
Jeff Brohm $39 million
Josh Heupel $37 million
Ryan Day $37 million
Lane Kiffin $36 million
Kirk Ferentz $31 million
Chris Klieman $29 million
Bret Bielema $29 million
Greg Schiano $28 million
Eli Drinkwitz $28 million
Lance Leipold $27 million
Mike Elko $27 million
Billy Napier $26 million
Mike Gundy $25 million
PJ Fleck $23 million
Hugh Freeze $20 million
Willie Fritz $19 million

No worries.  Sam could lose out and will be back.   Yuri don't have the bucks to play at the big table yet.

All of these schools need to get together and sign a pact that says no buyout for coaches.

Your program shouldn't be wrecked because you fired a losing coach. Half their salaries for 6 months, that's it.

That just proves there are a lot of ADs who suck at negotiating and have zero business skills.

And I bet all of them are making over $1 mill a year too.

I don't understand how the market is so hard up for coaches that buyouts without much in the way of attached performance clauses are the norm for the industry.  It is halfway through November and FSU is still looking for their second win but it would cost $60+ mil to get rid of him.  He had only had success at Memphis before then.

I guess it is like NFL QBs.  There are only about half as many as there are needed so everybody is hoping to lock in the scarcity.  The fact that the population is .500 every year hides some mediocre coaches each year so places end up making hires like us.

There were reports from Bevo at Texas that Mack would sneak into his stall late at night and violate him.  Bevo said this some years back when interviewed on the Ticket.
I mean, why would Bevo lie?

Is it his coaching at NC, or something else.  Don't they use a sheep as a mascot?

I remember they made Muschamp the coach-in-waiting which meant the writing was on the wall, but then Muschamp took the Florida job after a year of that designation and Mack coached 2 or 3 unremarkable seasons before "resigning". Only to hire Charlie Strong which led to Bobby back to Louisville.

Look guys, not everyone has an ace in the hole interim like Reggie Herring to come in and save the day.

after the james madison loss he told the team was probably retiring at the end of the season and their recruiting has tanked ever since. they are behind the likes of miami-ohio, sdsu, fau, georgia st., east carolina, unlv. he gave them no choice but to 'fire' him. it wasn't about the win-loss record. he'd quit.

Our stupid administration is never proactive about anything. Only reactive.

While other programs get ahead of NIL, we slow play it and our media chuds like Irwin refer to it as "cheating" in the early days.

We never cut bait with a bad coach early, we wait a year too late for him to burn the program to the ground in a year everyone saw coming.

We never hire the hot up and comer everyone knows will be a success. We pass on him for someone coasting on the downside of their career.

Literally everyone can see what next year is going to be like with Pittman in terms of win-loss and fan apathy. But we won't make a change now and will instead kick the can down the road and suffer through an embarrassing 2025 season (that literally everyone can see coming) and thus make our job less attractive.

Best jobs open

North Carolina (Brown out)

UCF (Gus' exit to FSU as OC, obviously guy was getting fired but whatever)

Fresno State

Utah State

I count 12 FBS jobs open currently...I'm sure this list is going to grow by Monday.

I could see West Virginia moving on from Neal Brown

Maryland possibly dumping Mike Locksley

Exactly, but you know we won't. We never do anything with correct timing. We're always doing things one (or more) year late. Always reactive, never proactive.

We'll inexplicably give Sam 2025, delay the inevitable, and wind up coach shopping at the same time as programs like Auburn, Oklahoma, Florida, FSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, West Virginia, ans others.

West Virginia, for whatever reason, will go hard after Odom.

He would probably have an easier path to the playoff at UNLV and if he can keep winning there is probably a lot of untapped money in Vegas for a winner.

Remember they bankrolled Tark back in the day when he was winning. The raiders aren't winning anytime soon.

So if Petrino goes and we follow the trend of hiring over qualified offensive coordinators with head coaching experience I think Mike Gundy would fit the bill. But we're more likely to hire Neal Brown and get what we get. Ok who am I kidding we're getting Barry Lunney Jr or Dowell Loggains as "coach in waiting" but double secret so nobody knows but everyone does.

There was a random dude on Facebook that took a photo of Petrino getting on a commercial flight to Charlotte. I'm sure that was legit.

West Virginia can be a good job. With Pat McAfee printing money these days, he would personally buy you 5 or 6 studs a year. Not to mention all the media exposure he could bring you. Kids eat that shit up. Read somewhere he is strongly supporting them bringing Rich Rod back.

Only cause I could come up with would be his comments he's made in the past year, his admission that he'd driven drunk 'hundreds of times' and then telling the fans they were all broke losers who couldn't pay their own bills for talking negative about the program.

Their lawyers could argue that these statements were damaging to the program and brought undue shame/embarrassment on it. He already had a clause in his contract with that after his OAN shirt debacle in '20.

I'm still really confused about NIL. Can universities and/or their fund raising arms directly pay the coach and players out of the same money pool?

I mean I know our coaches get paid thru the state of Arkansas (technically) but a large sum is offset thru the Razorback Foundation. Is the Razorback Foundation also paying players thru NIL donations?

Not 100% sure either but on the surface it's a booster fund. If it can be used to help pay for a coach, I don't see how it couldn't pay for players.

Wow - Purdue is gonna be a massive rebuild in the new big ten. Money better but the path to the playoff better in Vegas and if you make the playoff in Vegas then a better job than Purdue awaits.

Well I think you can close the book on any dreams of Odom coming back to Arkansas or at least you can for a while. Oh dang. Whatever will we do.

Kick the can down the road maybe Lashlee is in play this time next season and might very well will be and will probably cost a lot more. It's possible that can got kicked because Lashlee wasn't going to bail on his SMU team to entertain a move to Arkansas. It's also probable that when they tell you they aren't doing anything because it's the fiscally responsible move to make that they are being serious

*This does not endorse Lashlee as my front runner for the Hogs next coach although history seems to repeat repeatedly and we keep fumbling getting the good coaches with Arkansas connections.

I'm telling you what the play is and it scared me right after I thought of it because I thought we were past it and it is quintessential Arkansas.

Sam has one more year and then he is gone.  The Malzahnistas will make a play to bring Gus home.  He quit at UCF for two reasons.  One is he wouldn't be an attractive candidate at Arkansas if he had another rough year there.  And two, he would have had a larger buyout as a head coach than as an OC.  If FSU has an offensive resurgence next year, count on the NWA Malzahnista contingent to make a run.

And being Arkansas, we'll be all too happy to fund one more washed up coach's retirement.

agreed, they have money and he's made the playoff. That's gonna be big in recruiting. If they can win a playoff game, damn.  Also with Baylor and TCU and Tech down - he will be 3 behind teasip and aggie.

The one thing about Lashlee is that he is that quintessential young cocky guy who thinks he can do whatever he wants and succeed.  I don't know if he loves the helmet, but if he does, he is the exact type who would think the can succeed at Arkansas where others failed and be the next Broyles.

I don't know if he thinks that way, but there are people out there who relish a challenge and thrive on trying to do whatever others tell them they can't.  We need to search out and find one of those guys.

I would think one would be going to UNC to play for Bill and to get developed for the NFL where the real money is as opposed to going to XYZ Tech to play for coach slapnuts because he offered you the most money and hope you have good enough stats and pro day to get to the NFL.

Like Deion there will be plenty of players who go to him so it's not like he'll have to recruit.  not sure that NIL for those two needs to be as big as others.

I don't see it working out and I think the 20 hours per week rule will be an issue for him after the nfl.

Brady, Gronk, and Edleman talks about it on fox sunday - none of them thought bill would work out in college.

So, UNC is doing for football what Ark did for basketball by hiring a coach no one thinks they are worthy of and giving him a boatload of NIL $$ plus other demands.

These are the days where its legal to buy your program into relevancy.

We'll see how that works out for UNC...but we seem to be seeing where some programs that have been either doormats or at least close to it jump up and be competitive all because of throwing money at a problem and hoping it fixes things.

If Arkansas' trend continues it seems we're the opposite of spending fuck you money on football knowing money won't solve the problem so we do nothing. Ok well they did blame the fans and ask for more money that they won't spend.

not sure about the legality, but why would a player do that when he can transfer as many times as he wants and go to the highest bidder?

right now it would seem the only ones that would benefit from a contract are the marginal development guys.

Because you can't play unless you have a contract?

Not just anyone can walk up and play for the Houston Texans.  It takes.....a contract.

With the new NCAA pay world, why shouldn't it be the same?

and what 4 or 5* is going to be constrained by a contract when he can go to another school and get what he wants?

the pros have contracts, collective bargaining, etc. because they are employees. like actual employees of the organization. college players right now are students.

Got to get a GM and organizational staff to handle money and personnel issues.  A guy like Sam is barely adequate at coach, but it's almost cruel to force him to deal with money and all that.  Plus, I think it creates friction if a player believes a coach is the one not getting him paid.  If we had a GM and personnel staff, the coach could be an advocate for his players getting paid.

I love Arkansas but we have always been kind of amateur hour on so many things.  A school is going to need a slick professional outlook and presentation to compete nowadays.  We need to spend way more on administration with football and other revenue sports.  We should probably eliminate some non revenue sports to cover these costs.

Injury, underperformance etc from an 18 yo kids perspective. Kid gets a 1 mil 2-3 year deal and could be more money than his family has ever seen in their life. Just seems like a lot of work on a lot of  teams to rebuild a roster ever year with the whole team being possible free agents.

To fix it we need collective bargaining and transparency.  Contracts that are enforceable, along with knowledge of how much everyone is being paid.

The same bleeding hearts who got us into the NIL mess will complain that it's nobody's business what the players are being paid.  Tell that to every government employee whose salary gets released every year as part of some FOIA request.  Because that's effectively what the players are now...employees, or at least independent contractors (who are also subject to having their prices released via FOIA...which is why I don't do government work).

And if the private schools don't want to make their data available, that's fine too.  Make it a condition of being allowed into the CFP, March Madness, etc.

yes. and i don't think performance clauses that penalize are something that will be a thing. nil has nothing to do with any contracts players have with the school that might (will) happen in the future.

pro contracts have nothing like that. you get a base and then incentives. do coaches give back salary for missing a bowl or the playoffs?

Don't have any issue with kids making money for NIL.  That's not money in your pocket but was money either going to the foundation or school or under the table.  It's the easy portal that's fucking shit up.

The game will settle down into an NFL developmental superconference, a midtier with less money, and on down to D3.  End the rise of calling these players students.  Make them 1099 contractors, Rev share can work towards a salary cap, install certified agents and have standardized contracts.  Their education scholarship can be an additional perk included for those that want it.  Get the nfl to help fund it; they need a developmental league as players aren't ready to play these days because of the simple game they play these days.
Title: Re: 2024 Coaching Hotseat

To me making them students is the last bit of leverage schools have to get better control on this. AND at some point the academic side of things is going to wake up and do something about this if they even can.

So enter "restricted free agent" into the chat. I think in the near future we'll have something like that. Some kind of terms and conditions within the NLI that designates that the school has the first right of refusal for the student-athlete to enter into the transfer portal (they own the rights to the player) and that the kid can transfer without restriction AFTER he/she has graduated and is otherwise restricted. The kid can "test the waters" but the parent school would have the rights to that player in order to match the offer. This could potentially even lead to agreed value trades. In return that student-athlete is guaranteed a full ride scholarship (must actually go to class) and a percentage of revenue allotment thru NIL based on performance on and off the field and/or perceived value entering the season. Hell let the kid decide when he signs his NLI what kid of NLI it will be. Performance vs Agreed Value.

There are so many ways to go with this and it all starts at the ground floor level. If you are a 5 star kid coming into a situation your leverage is going to be real good and therefore maybe you'd want a Performance based NLI where as a kid that's a 3 star maybe wants that Agreed Value deal. Hell I don't know I just think that's where this needs to go in some way.

if the players are employees, then of course their salaries will be made public. just like the coach's, ad, and everyone else employed by the school.

having players be 'student athletes' is not really leverage, it's how the schools and the ncaa hang on to their 501(c) status.

nil and performance. right now i can give money to the collective, designate which sport(s) it goes to, but i can't choose which player(s) or in any way put in performance stipulations. that's true of all the collectives. they are separate entity from the school. they give the money to the players, but because is a collective, can't put any performance 'clause' in it. again, there's nothing like that in pro sports other than incentives, so why would college be any different? and how in the hell would that be brought about? nil and revenue sharing are and will be two separate things.

I guess they would be eligible for state retirement, but that would likely be a moot point as they wouldn't have enough time as athletes alone to vest.

Count their scholarships as income, which it should be.

Seriously a full ride scholarship, health care, meals, board, books, tutors, swag, weight room and training facilities, coaching, etc and they need to be paid to attend a school with no ties to actual athletic performance on their part, just show up, right?

The system is crazy at the moment, but I've got zero issues with players getting a cut of the grand riches of the game which their labors provide.  Let's get real.  These aren't real students.  You want that watch D3 ball.  These players have in many cases been pushed thru the education system for performance, then go to school on faux scholarships to get bullshit jackoff degrees.  Let's end the charade and treat them as simply hired help, and make them 1099 contractors.  They want to go to school fine. Give them a scholarship for when playing days are over.

The other good news is that there was zero way for Arkansas to become a powerful program in the old ways.  No way that Arkansas could grow enough homegrown talent and recruit enough out of state talent, to compete.
With NIL though and the portal you get the right coaches and recruiting staff, drive in the bucks, and you can buy the talent to be fucking Alabama.

I agree they deserve a slice of the money they help generate - tv, bowl, etc - that is fair and warranted.

My issue is the schools expecting/wanting the fans/boosters to provide the money to pay them.

Hunter wants me to help pay the QB then pay for the right to buy tickets and then buy the tickets to watch the qb play. And there is no requirement of the qb to do anything but show up to get my money.

This is the same leadership who gave Sam a contract that automatically extends one year with a  7th win including a bowl game which would be 13 games - like this year - in which the coach is rewarded despite the team losing 6 games.

What business rewards a salesman for keeping any clients but losing 6?

College athletics is big business that has never operated like a business. It has always been spend, spend, spend with no accountability or respect for the fan/ booster's money.

You don't see Jerry asking the fans to pay the salary of dak, cede, and Micah.

The first thing that needs to be fixed is the portal. The financial compensation can be worked out later.

No coach in the current model can do any kind of long-range strategic planning because they have no idea what their roster will be from one season to the next. Redshirt years to add weight, strength and improve position technique will be/are a thing of the past.

Go back to a system where a player gets only gets a "free" transfer in the case of a change in the HC. Otherwise, a transfer requires the player to sit out one year if out of conference and two years if in conference. Poaching coaches will be much less likely to pay players to sit a year or two and players will certainly not want to sit for free. Disgruntled players will have to compete in practice for a starting position rather than half-assing it until the next portal opening.

Coaches/GMs will be able to budget player compensation and target team needs more efficiently and High School recruiting will become more of a priority once again.

Now, get off my lawn.

I'd allow one free transfer as an undergrad, with none allowed to teams on your current school's schedule.  Graduates would have no restrictions...if they get a degree they've earned the right to move as they please.

The biggest issue with the money is not that they get any, or who is being asked to pay for it.  The problem is that they get it without conditions and no contractual limitations.

A commitment from a HS/JuCo player should be taken literally. I am committing myself to your team in exchange for free room, board, education (and now money). There should be a penalty if I decide not to honor my commitment.

As for a freebie, I agree that graduate students have fulfilled their obligations to a school. I also would not be opposed to a player that discovers his talent level is not commensurate with his current Division receiving a free transfer if he transferred "up" or "down" but lateral transfers should require one or two year waiting periods depending on whether the player transfers out of or remains within his conference respectively.

As you stated, the kids are now receiving money with no contractual obligations to perform a service and, evidently, putting that genie back into the bottle is not an easy thing to do. If college football is going to retain any structural stability it looks like it will have to be through regulation of the transfer portal.

since all the conditions of the settlement haven't been completely agreed upon, the transfer portal could be addressed in it. from the looks of it, the first year will be a shitshow, but those that have to deal with it think it will settle down after that. keep in mind that the house settling is nil money. also it won't be the ncaa enforcing any oversight.

"As noted in Dellenger's story, the negotiated media contracts (NIL) would be signed by a prospective player along with their grant in aid from the university and could include language regarding compensation, number of years, and even address a buyout should the player choose to transfer to another university."

Smart coaches who are somewhat desperate are doing this.

ADs who should be desperate but aren't should be forcing their underperforming coaches to do the same.

It's worth noting that both Gundy and Norvell have far more onerous buyouts than Pittman, and are almost certainly more hireable elsewhere should they lose their current gigs.  Sam has apparently chosen the "fuck you, fire me if you don't like me" path rather than "lets work together to make the program better."

And in fairness to Sam, it likely never crossed Hunter's mind to suggest it.  Sam may have been all in on something like this for all we know.

Brady made substantially less than his peers; his last contracts were $25 mil a year.  He bought into the patriots way and wanted to win.  It helps if your wife is Giselle making a jillion bucks.  Now he's getting $37.5 from Fox.

Hunter and Sam could both do it.
Seriously, Hunter is making $1.8 mill and Sam is making $6 mill.

yet they are asking us for money. that's rich. put your money where your mouth is boy.

both have been here 6 years and have earned over let's say $8 million in that time. if they have managed their money (yea that is risky but I would hope they aren't living paycheck to paycheck) then it's not like they couldn't afford to give back a little.

As of December 2024, the average salary in Arkansas is $52,798 per year, or $25 per hour:
Top earners: $80,751 per year, or $38 per hour
75th percentile: $66,479 per year, or $32 per hour
25th percentile: $39,117 per year, or $19 per hour

Most businesses in a similar situation would be eliminating jobs and cuttings salaries would they not?

To be clear he was not fired.  Jerry made him an offer, Mike chose to tell him to pound sand.

If Jerry offered him more than $13.50 an hour and a Golden Corral buffet pass he offered way more than Fat Nutt is worth.

Jerry likes familiarity so I wouldn't be surprised if he went after Kellen Moore

Or maybe it's time for primetime, if full on dementia has taken over.

Big differences in restructuring and accepting less money, at least in terms of managing an nfl cap.

Brady took less money, far less than what the market would pay him, to give the team more cap.

A restructuring of an existing contract is not costing a player a dime.  Two basic scenarios.  Convert salary to bonus.  Say you have 3 years left on contract at $10 mil a year.  We need space.  Convert this years salary to bonus.  Player gets $10 mill up front. But the cap hit now spreads over life of contract, so I made $7 mill of cap space as the bonus now adds $3.3 mill to each year.

The stupid thing teams like Cowboys do is add void years, which don't obligate player but allow team to spread further into future.  So that $10 mil adds 2 void years and so it gets spread as $2 mil a year over 5.  So if Dak has not been extended on that stupid contract, and left, Jerry had three void years on Dak that all accelerate to 2025. That would have been $40+ mil in dead cap.
