Here's the game thread for what should be a blowout, but I for one have offered it as a sacrifice to hasten Fat Boys departure or put more heat on Yuri as he stumbles thru this tar baby he's picked up.
Sam wins and he's here thru 26 at least. So keep that thought as you celebrate a nothing win that fucks us up.
As ESPN says, He was just hired to make a bowl every year. Apparently being good in the SEC was not a requirement.
They can rename the Liberty Bowl, Arkansas's Superbowl, now.
Bobby magic isn't enough to overcome the amount of quit that Sam has infused into the program. I am at peace no matter what happens today.

I'm at the point where I wouldn't be surprised if we blew them out or if we lose. There seems to be no consistency with a Sam team. You never really know what you're going to get week to week.
I'm thinking Sam gets to a 14 point lead, pulls the starters, gets lt to agree to 10 minute quarters, they come back and win when Sam runs out of time in his truncated game. We're overdue for a massive Sam fuckup.
Apparently we are wearing all reds today.

What are the odds Pittman had the team work on the Missouri game all week, thinking this one was an automatic win?
Green is regressing

Wiggins sucks

He is so fucking awful today. Fucked the drive by missing the easy first down throw, and then just tosses an INT to no one on offense.
Is Jackson out for today?
I love BMFP, but if Green goes back out there, he can get the fuck out too.

There are several hallmarks of the Pittman era and that's one of them.
- taking the foot off the gas too early in games
- inability to win close games
- playing the wrong player (over a more talented one)
- overlooking "lesser" opponents
- inability to keep a team focused after a win
- loyalty to bad coaches like Fountain
- committing a shitload of penalties and turnovers

I don't know where we are with the redshirt shit...I think Singleton already had a redshirt so that dog don't hunt for him but there were several others that probably didn't get run because they are playing games and need them bodies for the Mizzou game during scrub time which should start around mid-way thru the 2nd quarter.

This is the spiral we are in. Our idiot AD fought NIL and just got Edge started a couple years ago, which is in and of itself a fireable offense.

As for the gun and ski mask and getting money out of me they can go fuck right off. Fuck right off.
Sam works just hard enough to hit the metrics that stupid AD set and that's why the hugs and kisses after we beat Tennessee. It's indeed amazing what we COULD accomplish if he worked, or another coach who busted his ass. We literally had players this year before UAB that had no idea about that team during press conferences because we did not prep at all. Just rolled out there lazily. That will continue.
So the money will not come in from the fans who have higher aspirations. So we're stuck and in a horrible self fulfilling prophecy with no way out. And the program will still be 4-8 to 8-4 on a good year, like it has been for most of the last 35 years.

I listened to the press conference and he wasn't actually criticizing the fans, he was criticizing the media for repeatedly "putting it out there." He was also expressing a boss's concern about "everyone in that building", whether they would keep their jobs or not, having been through it several times as an assistant. That's actually a valid concern.
Not that big a difference, really. When coaches start getting defensive about their jobs, it's never a good look.

It all depends on who you hire. Out of all the people we've hired since Petrino, the only one who wasn't a WTF hire to everyone paying attention was Bielema. And even Bert was a bad hire due to his style of football which didn't fit the kind of players we can get versus who we play.
Anyone should have been able to see Morris was a bad fit. And Pitt may have been the best we could get off of 0-16, but he was intended to be a stopgap anyway.
The next guy may be equal to or worse than Pittman. If so, what have we lost? You can't go a lot lower than 12th-13th anyway.
That said, he's not going anywhere unless he decides to retire and recover that hip with a negotiated buyout that doesn't require him to seek employment to offset it. We just have to hope for the best and expect something far less I guess.

It is certainly reasonable to question the coaching decisions in the game. But I don't think the man is stupid-- he is thinking about all those things. I'll bet he knows what Petrino is thinking. Twill, who started off hot, and in my view finished a little cooler, is much younger so it is quite reasonable to believe he will get other offers.
Pittman is obviously thinking about his personnel. That is why he has positioned Kutas and Miguel Mitchell to use this as a redshirt year. I think he probably knows whether Green is coming back.

There have been 4 teams added after us and one team with us. We are worse than 4 and maybe about equal with OU.

TWill isn't getting a shot at a big program for big $s either. I can see him getting a shot at a small school for small $s...and then never heard from again.
which opening is there for petrino to take? there's no decent p4 programs that are making a change.
he's the 6th highest paid oc in the country. watching film and game planning, just what he says he likes to do.
When 1/4 of the team will portal out and you bring in 25 players with only one or two years of eligibility every year, what in God's name is the justification for a redshirt?
So after 20 something years we're right back to...
1. Who can we get that's better

3. A lot of programs would like to go bowling
4. It's the media's fault we suck and also have no money to compete (we crootin yaw)

Who has come calling for Petrino since he was let go at Louisville? I doubt he was at Missouri State because he really loved Springfield, but maybe I'm wrong. He's old and has a shit ton of baggage, and I think it's safe to say his system definitely thrives with guys he develops, not one year guys who are gonna transfer out.
As far as T-Will, he might get a shot somewhere, but I think the shine has worn off of him. The shine he got from the TN game has worn off with as bad as their offense has looked this season. Ole Miss could have scored 100 on us, and a bad Florida team held them to 17 points. Is he really that irreplaceable?

I was responding to a post celebrating another season of the coordinators to seat their games. Personally I think Petrino's offense is too complex for a transient roster, and TWill didn't make adjustments to counter film study of early success. The current game needs coaches who understand how to manage constant change and cycling new players. Sam won't play bench to develop anyone he'll have the time he doesn't know who's playing.

Prior to NIL coaching was a major factor in getting better talent. The elite coaches are mostly successful because they have been able to bring in better players. Saban, as successful as he was, was great because of talent. When he was in the NFL he was a mediocre coach. Why? Because he didn't have a talent advantage. Does anyone think Debo is a football genius? Hell no, he brought in elite talent.
I remember an interview with Saban years ago and he talked about when he was hired at Bama. The AD made a comment that they just hired the best coach in college football. Saban pulled him aside and said "You didn't hire the best coach in college football. You hired the best recruiter in college football"
NIL changes the playing field for getting talent. It allows schools like us to gain an advantage. To get lids today money > history > location, etc. Bringing in better talent can make a good coach look great.
My point is Pittman (in my opinion) isn't making decisions to cost us games. Is he perfect? Hell no. However, I would argue coordinators have as much, if not more, inpact on games and I think we have 2 good one's. Bringing in better players with the 2 coordinator's we have would make a big difference. Much bigger difference than switching coaches imo.

Lots of players, especially linemen, actually play for 5 years or so. These days it isn't necessarily with the same team, but having extra years of eligibility is certainly a good thing for development.

This year I'd agree his decisions haven't cost us. Last year and the year before they cost us 4-5 games total.
I still think you're overstating the effect of marginal improvements in talent.
You used the example of Saban. Alabama recruited the same caliber of players since Bear Bryant was drinking whiskey on the sidelines. Only Bear and Saban won at the highest level consistently. The mediocre to bad coaches between them had a few good years mixed in with a lot of average or below seasons. A moron can get lucky and win with a bunch of self motivated stars, but he's going to underachieve most of the time.
Give Saban and Sam the same level of talent and Saban is winning at least 8/10. I want a guy who if his roster is outmanned is going to give you a chance, who will beat you most of the time if the talent is equal, and who will always win when he has a clear advantage. Sam has succeeded at times with the first, but failed at the last two.

The problem is you're not replacing Pittman with Saban. You're replacing him with Odom and the like that likely come with the same coaching concerns Pittman has.
You can't tell me that putting money into OL and a better QB this year wouldn't yield the
potential of better results than replacing Pittman with a realistic replacement.
You've always been a Petrino supporter. Do you think we should close that book? Do you think we likely get a better OC if Pittman is replaced? You're essentially saying if I give Petrino marginally better talent he can't so anything with more it (not Pittman). I don't believe that.
This is the closest we will ever get to having Petrino as our coach and we have the chance to buy the best players to let him run his offense. Yet we chose not to because we dont want to support Pittman.

I'm all for upgrading those positions since we are keeping Pittman.
I don't think this is anywhere near the same Petrino we had thirteen years ago either. But since we are keeping Pittman I would prefer to keep the staff intact for continuity's sake. That applies to both sides of the ball.
Let's turn this around a bit. Suppose retaining Pittman is preventing some from adding massively to our NIL fund. If that is the case would you support moving on and trying the next guy who might have more funds available for talent acquisition?
I've long said that I'm pretty ok with Pittman coming back for next season if it means we have some continuity with the OC and DC. Caveat to that being we needed to make a bowl game as the low bar for performance. I think it's a possibility Williams gets a better DC role somewhere and we won't match it. I'm not in love with the guy but we've had worse DCs.
I don't think people are going to flood money into NIL to support Pittman and his staff though. Arkansas has always been about selling the sizzle and there's no sizzle with this staff or team. What little juice Petrino brought upon his rehiring has pretty much faded. Other than Russell is there really even a player to get excited about? And we really only got to see a few flashes of him.
There's certainly been talk and efforts toward getting a lot of these guys to come back...ok cool but at some point you need to show that your "development" is paying off because I think we're on pace to have an experienced OL back next season but it's an experienced OL that is only good compared to last season...in reality they suck balls. They MUST improve greatly or they need to find some dudes. I feel like we need a better center at the very least and look at moving Nichols to guard. To me that keeps looking like one of the weak links whenever Blackstock isn't in the game.
Defense line is a bunch of slugs. We need pass rushers badly and need to develop of couple of the guys already on the team.
Except for our receivers and tight ends, do any of our players look like they developed over the year and are better now? Do we as a team do things better in game 11 than we did in game two or three? I don't see it. Does anyone else?
Here's an immediate concern I have with Pittman. He's having surgery the week after the Missouri game. Which means he will be out of pocket for one of the critical portal periods for starters. And suppose one of our coordinators (likely Williams) gets interest from another school? Getting the team ready for and coaching in the bowl game is a relatively minor problem - Petrino could handle that easily and even if he doesn't, BFD. But I'd like our head coach to be available to recruit the portal, help finish off the high school class, and potentially handle any staff changes.

I would aupport it but it's a stupid mentality. Childish one would say.
How is Petrino not the same? I never understood that. Coaches don't forget how to coach. They're in the most competitive job market on the planet where failure gets you fired.
I don't think coaches change. I just think it's a difficult job and comes with varied success. That success is mostly dependent on the players you put on the field.
I too am worried about his health. Ideally, I'd like to see him step down due to health. I wonder if Petrino could acquire an interim HC title?

It's definitely childish but it's reality.
People get tired of what they perceive as a stagnant program.
A lot of what made BP an elite head coach, and why others couldn't replicate his success, was his intensity. It's hard to maintain that once you're older and more comfortable. Not impossible, but difficult once you've met most of your goals and proven yourself.

Our OL is less ass. We have a new QB so you rule that out. I think you see more development on the defensive side.
With the portal, I think player development will provide minimal impact to all schools. Kids aren't player, they're gonna transfer.

I wonder how much Sam is out courting the people who could move the needle in NIL. The Tysons, Fletchers, Waltons, and HTLs of the world. Not sure.
I think the biggest problem with Pittman is that he's dimwitted and lazy.
He isn't demanding enough in practices and he isn't quick to react/respond in high pressure gametime situations.
He mostly just limps around, looking generally apathetic.

re NIL/recruiting
players want to be paid, but they also want to be stars. Even if we had Tyson-level money, we could only, at best, draw even with other big programs, who additionally can offer what we can't: Higher expectations and standards of excellence.
We're hanging banners for winning six games.
We can't compete with teams who won six games three or four weeks ago, or even against perennial underachievers like Ole Miss/Texas A&M, who carry an aura of demanding more and more from their program.
