Might as well get it started. Mine is at son and DiL's house in Oklahoma. Never know what we'll get. It's usually a midwestern spread of mild mannered foods and convenience items. We'll make a few things to take.
I prefer good homemade things over turkey and ham. Barbecue, or Tex Mex, or chicken fried steak with cream gravy. Will report.
Fuck tradition. We're doing Spaghetti Bolognese.
Frying a turkey and smoking a turkey.
I see apples on the counter so a pie is forthcoming. I see yams and pecans so diabetes is also on the menu.
I was told a sister-in-law is making poppy seed chicken.
Just going traditional roast turkey. Dry brining. Mashed potatoes, gravy, chicken and dressing, and whatever sides other people bring. Pumpkin cake roll. And lots of bourbon.
What's a brutha gotta do to get some crock-pot dressing up in here?
My wife made these sweet potato balls. I hate sweet taters but you might like them.
Basically cook your sweet potatoes and mash them. She make sweet ones and savory ones.
Sweet: season the mash with brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg. Take a marshmallow and encase in the mash. Roll in chopped pecans and put in the air fryer. Or derp fry.
Savory. Season mash with butter, cayenne, salt pepper. Make a composed butter with chopped fresh jalapeƱos and some cream cheese. Freeze it in balls for a bit. Encase in mash. Roll in chopped pecans and coarse salt. Air fryer til crispy.
We are going to Nashville for my Thanksgiving with my bf's fam. I hope it's decent and not weird fucking casseroles.

I went to my BIL's family thanksgiving in 2019 when we moved up here to Cleveland. They're all pretty fat so I thought the food was going to be good, but it was the blandest stuff I've ever eaten. Basic honky Midwestern cuisine really sucks.
I'm not sure what we're having. My wife isn't a massive fan of thanksgiving food so we're probably going to do something different. Deciding either between chicken schwarma or pizza.
Dad won an extended stay at a physical therapy center thanks to a fall and broken arm, so friends are cooking for me and Mom. This will be a fun year of not having to cook anything.

Since my mom hurt her knee (torn tendon and broken bone). I will be running the show.
Fried Turkey, BGE Smoked ham, Dressing, SPC, GBC, Salad, Red Velvet Cake, Pumpkin Pie and Pecan Pie.

Hopefully he is not making his version of Pecan Pie which has molasses in it but no sugar. Tastes awful.

My grandmother made regular and oyster dressing. Nothing like canned oysters baking to stink up a house. Like baking cat food.
Maybe his family will present you an array of family favorite congealed salads. My other grandmother would have some new one every Thanksgiving. Lemon jello, sour cream, tuna fish. Putrid but the old man made me always taste it "to be polite".

Eating Thanksgiving at someone else's house is like going into a potluck. You never know what ya may get or how bad or good of a chef some are. I tend to stick to the basics when eating elsewhere. We had a Friendsgiving Saturday and the dressing tasted like corn pudding.

Son woke up puking his guts out at like 0130 this morning and puked for like an hour straight and had horrible stomach pain. Ended up in the ER and two IV's and a bunch of nausea meds later felt some better. Back home now but that killed our plans to go up to Arkansas for Thanksgiving. Now we are left with what to eat at our place since we didn't prepare anything. Wife is sending me out to Central Market to 'Get Stuff' at noon the day before Thanksgiving...

I've noticed ever since the pandemic that this has been normal. I abhor going to Walmart for fear of encountering these types of folks.
I was at the Walmart on MLK by the interstate a few months ago and this redneck family (probably from Stilwell, OK or something) brought their dog in and he took a dump in the auto section. I was looking for car parts for my father-in-law. A couple of teenagers from the family were just giggling like it was funny and not doing anything to clean it up.
It was crazy, got there and tons on open spots. Wife had a list that had me going all over and to the meat and deli counters. Was a breeze. Was like one number wait at both counters. Got some steaks, a roast and some cooked turkey and ham and some sides. So pot roast and turkey and ham and sides tomorrow and then steaks Friday. Not bad. When I left though, it was a madhouse with a shitload if cars waiting for spots and stuff. Lots of frazzled looking hot moms though.

Don't forget the occasional gunfire in the parking lot. That WalMart is less that a mile from my office and I bet I don't go in there more than once or twice a year and never at night.
Got the turkey injected, sweet potato casserole minus the topping, and green bean casserole minus the French onions mixed in already done.
Two Negronis in and about to make the crown bread and sausage/celery/onion mix for the dressing and the Texass Pecan Pie sans syrup per Max Miller and Tasting History.

You having Nashville hot turkey?🦃
Last night, we had a ham, scalloped potatoes and corn on the cob. This morning we had biscuits and gravy, pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham and bacon.
A little bit later we have two turkeys, one fried and the other oven cooked. We also have cornbread dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, bacon wrapped green bean clusters, Watergate salad, Texas Roadhouse rolls and cranberry fresh from the can just like 8lb 6oz Baby Jesus eats. For dessert we have pecan pie, pumpkin cheesecake and blackberry cobbler. We have blackberry wine, muscadine wine and sweet tea to drink.
I'll be in and out of consciousness for the rest of the day. Have a happy Thanksgiving, y'all.

I will not abide disrespect for the green goodness that is teh Watergate, madam.
I thought a Watergate was similar to a Waldorf salad
Someone in my family used to make it all the time but they are dead now and that was a long time ago.

Just out the other turkey in the peanut oil. The smells are wonderful. Hope they eat good.
:borat:
We're at son and DiL's and we had zero time for bringing anything. I was hoping for a couple of grilled venison backstraps. Nope we got the full Midwest version. No salt or pepper even.
Son did a Aldi spiral ham on the traeger with a good peachy glaze. That was the highlight. A turkey breast from the instapot was actually ok except zero seasoning. Gravy from a jar. Stovetop stuffing with that fake onion aroma. A corn casserole that would have been great with a jalapeno in it. Bad green bean casserole. A can of cranberry jelly.
The disappoint.

I'm at a Midwest dinner as well. Basically the same menu.
My only responsibility is a big breakfast and, for some reason over the years, deviled eggs.
People always ask what my recipe is. My response every year is "whatever mayo, mustard, and relish type things I find in my parent's fridge that isn't expired."
I really think it's just that I usually put Tony c's on them and it shocks my northern family member's minds when they eat one.
Alright, look y'all. Woopig Thanksgiving dinner is at my house next year. If any of you fuckers can come to my house for Thanksgiving, eat, and either be disappointed or nauseated, you just don't know good food.

Is that just regular old heated up corn?

is that dressing with a lot of tumeric instead of sage?
We had something that was hot pineapple with cheese and ritz crackers on top. Never had that before.
We'll do traditional for Christmas. Didn't even break out the nice paper plates.

YEP. Plain Ole canned corn with butter and pepper.

It's white bread, cornbread, four eggs, two cans of cream of chicken soup, two cans of chicken broth, celery, onion, teaspoon of sage, salt and pepper and a stick of butter on top. In the crockpot for 4 hrs. I'm telling you, all my family and friends devour the stuff. Today, we had 18 people.

Doesn't look as soupy as last year's version.

Yeah, the primary ingredient is yellow cornbread. That's the yellow color. And no, Dee doesn't put 48 tablespoons of sage in it.
My sister did the dressing and it had chicken in it...wasn't bad. She never does those out of the box units.
Cranberries out of the can and were fabulous
Turkey cooked in bag in oven...checked temp at 3 hrs and it was already at temp so we pulled it. Turned out pretty good wasn't dry at all.
Yams had pecans in it another thing my sister brought. It was good but I'm not really vibing on yams.
Mashed taters were your basic mashed taters. Made from real potatoes
Gravy custom made by my sister
The gravy that's supposed to cook in the bag with the turkey was gross looking
Now I know why I don't drink much wine. My fucking head hurts.

I left off the deviled eggs we had, which were actually good once I doctored them. Eggs from my DiLs chickens. My 9 year old granddaughter made them to her mom's specs which was mayo and a dab of mustard. I segregated a bunch and sprinkled with coarse salt and no-salt Tony c's.
I want to try deep fried deviled eggs where the whites are rolled in seasoned panko and fried, the yolk mix piped into the fried product, topped with a slice of jalapeƱo and a bacon bit.

Yeah I've had that pineapple casserole before. It's an old southern dish that had a revival years back when Southern Living featured it like in the 70's and it made the rounds a few years. I love pineapple but I don't love this. Canned pineapple, sugar, cheddar cheese, topped with a ritz cracker crumble.

was odd cause I was like isn't this dessert not a main dish?
I love pumpkin pie. Anyone ever smoked one? I wanna try.

🤢 I just don't like anything pumpkin flavored including pies. Also sweet potato pie is gross too

How would you even do that? Gotta get some of those Cuban cigar rollers in Tampa, with the big leaves.

Sweet tater pie is easy to mess up. Lot of the ones I've had were too mushy. I make mine soft but still with chunks of sweet potato. Also easy on the vanilla - ugh that will overpower it.

I'm thinking crank a grill up to 350 degrees or so and toss in a box of wet apple wood for the smoke. Or cherry wood. Might even do it in a cast iron just to go all out with the idea that will either be the dumbest or the greatest thing ever.
pretty sure you cold smoke them. like cheese. and then turn up the heat.
at least that's what people that have done it have told me.

hickory smoked or like rolled up like a joint kind of smoke? I mean there's so many applications here.
