My one and only Liberty Bowl experience was in 1974 when a college girlfriend invited me to go see Tennessee play Maryland in what was then known as Memphis Memorial Stadium.
I came away with two impressions: I had definitely underestimated the ability of Memphis to freeze my ass off and Randy White was a very baaaad man on the football field.
I just froze my ass off in Antarctica but at least it was worth it. No way I am going to this bowl game to watch a thrown together team get their asses handed to them while freezing to death. And I I live here. I have relegated our football team to something like our swimming team, which I don't watch either. Maybe when they start looking like a decent football team, I will care again,

2010 was fucking cold. I had layers upon layers of whiskey and clothing. Nothing could warm me up. I was sick for a week after. Probably the coldest I have ever been. I would've been ok with getting shot to be put out of my misery that night.

While we're going down memory lane, my favorite bowl I attended was the 2000 Cotton Bowl Classic.
We woke up New Years Day wondering if Y2K had ended the world as we knew it and then proceeded to watch Stoerner, Cobbs and company whip that #14 LongWhorn ass up and down the field.
After the game, we were at On The Border when Stoerner and his family came in and the whole restaurant stood up and called the Hogs.
My favorite bowl game will, of course, always be the '78 Orange Bowl.
I know I'm more of a pussy than most here, so I guess I had better cold weather gear. Neither the Liberty Bowl nor the 2002 Cotton Bowl seemed all that bad to me.

I could swear I remember Magic Dick doing Whammer Jammer but you know... drugs. Was that the year before at the Stones concert. That was the worst fucking experience ever. No concessions. No water. 163 degrees.
Blue oyster cult player Reaper for about a half hour, since no one knew any of their other shit. Outlaws opened, played green grass to close the set, then Vic, then Skynyrd who played a headline length set and might have been the best I ever saw them. In 74 they had opened for Three Dog Night and folks booed TDn and threw shit at them so they cut it short and Skynyrd came out and played another hour. ZZTop was smokin hot and played a fucking longass crazy version of mellow down easy with a bunch of dirty added lyrics. BFG just ripped all night. They played like three hours and a bunch of stuff no one had heard yet. My first concert was Overton park shell with zztop opening for the Allman brothers. I've seen zztop at least 20 times

It's a business. You expect him to play behind the shit line Sam will have for the bowl since all the starters left? Risk injury for a big nothing burger in a bowl? Every year there's at least one player with nfl aspirations that gets a bad injury the fucks up their draft position. Why do they owe their teammates anything to play in an exhibition game to fill espn's coffers when your coach sets the example of making business decisions in life?

What made the bowl games "shitty" is the pussification of sports. Back when I was a kid dudes didn't "risk" injury...they just showed up and played. Yeah maybe a few guys ripped up a knee and ended up losing out on millions in potential earnings but by god they played for the love of the game and the name on their chest (making millions)

Having a goal of making a bowl is so stupid. The goal is to win every single game you have on you schedule or have left on you schedule. At the end of the year, you add them up and maybe you won enough to go to a bowl. But saying from the start, "we're gonna make a bowl" is just stupid.

Starting next Tuesday there will either be a bowl game or a full NFL schedule every day until January 5th, excluding Christmas Day. Regardless of whether teams deserve them or how many players opt out, that seems like a win for football fans. And for those who don't like them, you have the option of changing the channel.

That's where I'm at. He's gotta put a positive spin on the bowl. Just like he's gotta attempt to make it sound like losing 25 guys is just a super cool challenge and an opportunity for the keeds. Also pay no attention to our backups getting offered 5 times more than we thought they were worth...we're gonna go out and buy better players (somehow).
Sam is not a wordsmith...he's not going to say the most apropos thing in the moment. So blunders like "We wanted the Liberty Bowl" gets conflated to this was our goal the entire season which clearly it isn't.

Free tickets is the way to go. I've been to 5 total Liberty Bowl games and never paid for a ticket. Granted, my first one was as a kid with my dad.

This isn't intended to shit on CJ Brown because he looked decent last night.
But I can't help but think about what might have happened if the screen against Texass had gone to James instead.
That's the exact game and play I thought of.
Just looking at the highlights of James a couple of things stood out.
1. His highlights showed some fairly sloppy route running. That's probably a huge reason why he wasn't playing he just wasn't ready...
2. He's going against some terrible defense in Texas Tech...they've been getting torched this season despite their 8 wins.
Still I think James just fucking jumped off the page compared to what we've seen from Anthony, Brown, and a few others.
A not so great man once said if you don't got speed you're chasing it. Anyway dude clearly has speed and seemed physical. We've been trotting out Broden and others all season long that haven't really pissed a drop. So yes it's a bit puzzling. Bobby Petrino should do better.

But we had dozens of passes dropped or not won because of not being physical enough.
Especially with a backyard type QB extending plays, have precise route runners is less important than having guys who can separate or post up someone to fight for the ball.

This is true, but remember..it looked like Greene had a LOT of time to throw last night. That means a lot when receivers have time to get open.
