I have virtually no faith at this point and imagine that our postseason is going to consist of one & done on Wednesday night of the SECT.
But a win is a win and this one would be a win-plus. It would be the most Arkansas thing ever and feel eerily like beating #5 Tennessee in football last season after blowing the OSU and A&M games.
From the games of their's that I have watched, UK doesn't look like a top 12 team. Maybe Cal gets at least a half-chub for this one.
How are we feeling?
It would be the most Arkansas thing ever to be 12-8 overall and 1-6 in the SEC and go into Lexington and win.
Pain
nothing could be worse than then the moment Pel's 09-10 team was down 71-28 with 16:35 left at Rupp.
I pray that history won't repeat itself.
Also, Rupp Arena might for the first time ever actually have more than 3 people stand up at the same time and make noise without fear of spilling their wine or dropping their cheese.
of all the arenas I went to during my time covering or traveling with the hogs, Rupp was about as rowdy as a movie theater on AARP night.
Hell, they still think Rick Pitino is going to return at some point and that Adolph Rupp wasn't a racist.
the KY Jellycats can suck it, suck it long, and suck it hard.
I fear the game will be about as enjoyable as Ashley Judd's acting which is not very enjoyable but maybe Morgan Freeman will show up and make it interesting but that's not likely going to happen.
My hope for Saturday is to actually see 2 different offensive sets that involve a screen or a hedge and movement without the ball. just make them actually work on the defensive end would be a very nice change of pace. Something to indicate they are doing something inside the Eddie Sutton Performance Gym that involves basketball as opposed to enjoying a catered meal of Razorback Nuggets and Tusk beer while wondering how the jellycat fans will react to Cal.

It goes without saying that Cal has never played on Wednesday at the SECT. With the addition of OU and Texas, there's now four games on Wednesday instead of just two night games.
I don't foresee a scenario where we finish 8th or better.
Remember 2 months ago being really hyped for this game?
Now I just want to crawl in a hole.
That said, if we only win one more game in the regular season, please make it this one. We're not doing jack this year. Winning at UK is as close to winning the natty as we're getting this season.
If we don't get blown out I'll consider it a "win".

Time to kick their ass and buttfuck Pope over the announcers table while the arena looks on in horror
Like how Cal is wearing a purplish jacket. Way to straddle the fence.
Also, ESPN keeps showing only Kentucky faggot fans. Interesting.
Lol at the "Cal Kiss Pope's Ring" sign.
They still don't have much internet up there I guess.

It's always one or the other

Hope Davis goes for 50.
Hopes raised
Hope Ivicis goes for 50.
Wagner, you smoothbrain
Well we had a good two minutes
Looks like Kentucky is going to shoot 90% tonight.
100% should be an offensive foul. I don't care about the restricted circle.
I want us to have a strong big guy again. Give Z a strong 'roid regimen
Ugh. They may shoot 95% tonight.
They can't miss, but we're hanging with them. Can Wagner stop turning down open looks in favor of contested attempts at the rim?
We are shooting really well right now. Even on a night when we can't miss, the opponent is going to shoot better.
We're playing too fast.

Nice midrange from Davis. He can take those shots all day.
Who is that guy? :><:
Richmond. Who dat?

Keep attacking the basket.
Kentucky may shoot 95% from three.

I have already forgot about Boogie.
Great read by Davis on D. Nice run!
This game is entirely too fast and athletic for Jonas Aidoo.
He would be fantastic as a back to the basket center against a bunch of white guys in the top intramural league. He might score 50.
Davis on his way to 50.
Oweh with the forearm push off on that drive.

I'm sure some of the KY inbreds were talking shit. Richmond has some dog in him. I like him not taking shit from them. Great win and hopefully propels our season. Tonight is what could be.

This is rich...
"WE ARE THE ONLY BLUE BLOOD WHO NEVER EVER ONE TIME GETS HOME COOKING.
When Cal first got hired, there was an old retired sec ref who was on this board on and off. He said there was a white and black list. KY Has always been on the top of the black list. The ref found out about it and was force to retire.
He suspected it was for betting because UK generates so much betting revenue in vegas.
Ref calls have been bad at Kentucky before Cal.
And they will continue to be bad after Cal.
This year has proven it, this game confirms it."
I haven't necessarily warmed up to Cal as "ours" yet. It will take a couple of years, and more success than he has had so far.
But, I'm really really glad he didn't have to go into Rupp with a shitty team and exit with a loss. I'm glad for him for the victory tonight.
By far the best basketball we have played this year. Keep playing like that, and we are back in business.
Great game and great win! Theiro and Wagner led the way. Hopefully, they can find a way to salvage the season. The talent is there.
I'm a little worried about Thiero. He creates a lot of contact and winds up taking some awfully hard falls sometimes. I just fear he will be hurt, and we would really miss him

Hey HTL, my country bumpkin ass just called the Hogs in the middle of the MGM too. Fuck you!!
Kept waiting for the refs and the Kentucky 3pt shooting to pull it out in the end. We didn't have one scoring drought the entire game.
We limited them to only 23 3pt attempts. We shot 25. Our perimeter defense was really good.
That game cost me $20 I was happy to lose.

Well good for them. I'm sure there was an extra chicken nugget in it for the boys if they got this W.
I passed out early, what did I miss?
We had lots of movement off the ball, made shots, and went to the basket. Things we really haven't seen much of this year. We looked good for a change. Like someone else said, I really thought either the refs would take over, or we would go into our usual scoring drought and make it a close game that we would lose. We made plays when we needed them. We still need to work on FTs. If we keep this kind of play up, we will be there.

I have shat on Davis just about every game, but he had his best game of the season by far. 3-6 from 3 and 7-14 total from the field, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals to only 2 turnovers. If we were getting that from him every night we'd be in a much different position. All the starters scored in double digits last night. That's gotta be a first for this year, I'd imagine. I know this is the team Cal envisioned when he signed all these guys.
Aidoo is still ass, though.
The offensive movement away from the ball looked much better. Shots were falling, and turnovers weren't a problem. You know after all the cameras and mics were gone, Cal had to have a fuck yeah moment to himself.
We made shots and played defense. Period.
Just turned the game on for a replay.
I promise I won't restart watching and mess things up.

It's why I said that the only way for us turn this around was to get Davis going. He is a much better player than he has shown. Last night was the first time I've seen him aggressive on offense. I thought he set the tone in the first half and that gave everyone else confidence.

He is definitely a key cog. Him being effective opens up opportunities for the other guys.

Completely different player when he's attacking and not passing up every drive to the basket. He still had some bizarre moments trying to handle the ball. Not sure if he had those issues at FAU, but it's almost like he gets stuck trying to figure out what to do while he's doing it, if that makes sense. But other than that, no complaints. There really wasn't much to complain about with anyone. The defense was relentless, UK just hit some really tough shots.
It was nice to finally be on the other end of a game where a team would claw back within a couple of buckets and immediately fall behind by double digits again. We answered every single run they had.

I agree that the rest of the team fed off of him and it was huge to help get us through the emotions of the first 5 minutes. I've shit on him as much as anyone. Justifiably so. If he continues to play like that then we'll be a tournament team.

12-16 on free throws is pretty good.
I was pleasantly surprised that Thiero made 10-12. If he can keep that up he will score 20 plus on just about everyone we play.

We didn't shoot any in the last four minutes. For whatever (unusual) reason, I never felt that outcome was in doubt. Kentucky seemed to spit the bit when Z made that crazy 3 after they cut it to 6 on the Garrison dunk.

Yeah, but we all know what can happen with 4 minutes left. We were lucky KY missed some shots down the stretch or those FTs might have hurt. And KY had a lot of turnovers, thank goodness.

I hear you. And normally I would've been quaking. But it just seemed like they were done. Maybe that's mainly because I think Pope is not yet capable of willing his team to come back from that deficit that late. And might never be.

It seemed odd to me that Kentucky just quit trying late. With around 2:00 left it seemed like they were content to not foul and just take their ass whipping.
That doesn't bode well for them at tournament time. They had a lot of quit in them.
We definetly showed we don't miss boogie. That is a good sign going forward.

It may have forced us to run an actual offense rather than just letting Boogie "create."
My concern is for when DJ inevitably gets into foul trouble. I don't like the idea of Richmond as our backup PG.

Kentucky missing both of the technical FTs definitely helped. That took away any momentum they could have got from that.

It's still baffling to me that KY hired Pope instead of Oats, Pearl, or Beard from within the conference, all of whom are much better and more accomplished coaches than Pope.
Quote from: Piggielicious on Feb 02, 2025, 09:08 PMIt's still baffling to me that KY hired Pope instead of Oats, Pearl, or Beard from within the conference, all of whom are much better and more accomplished coaches than Pope.
That just doesn't happen very often within the conference, especially when you're in a top conference and each team can almost realistically hire the right person (or not) and succeed.
See bama hiring doboer in football. They couldn't or didn't go hire the top in conference sec coach.
The Cal to Ark was rare and we didn't really pull him here as opposed to him being pushed to here with chicken nuggies.
I get your point though. Oats, pearl, beard would have all taken that call and would have been better hires. But all of them are great coaches and they don't typically move to other schools if they're in a top conference, getting paid, and have a chance to win the natty. Beard is kind of an outlier but kinda not with the Texas deal. He certainly wouldn't have left Texas for ole piss width out the mamma drama. Same with pearl, he'd still be at tenner if not for the ncaa bs.
I think Pope will do fine at Kentucky. He's going to apply a more "team focused" approach and probably be less about the one-and-done types. So there will likely be an adjustment period but at the end of the season if you be winning games then who gives a fuck about recruiting rankings and all that shit. I know his current team is a mix of his boys from BYU and other hired guns but over the long haul I think we'll see him establish what little culture a college basketball coach can possibly have from season to season.
That all being said if Pope can't get it done within 4 or 5 years I doubt he'll be there to see a 6th season. He may go down as a bridge hire while Kentucky tries to figure it's shit out. And once again we must remind ourselves that these blue collar programs don't have nearly the appeal (including us) now that you can pay guys to come to any damn place. Somehow I figure somebody will want that job though for many years to come but if you are already winning and established why move?

Kentucky wasn't taking a chance with Beard so soon after his legal issues. They got burned with the coked up version of Sutton and the hardcore alcoholic Gillespie.
I was hoping they would hire Oats. Kentucky being a perennial contender is a constant. Alabama being more than an occasional tournament team is rare. Moving Oats to Lexington would have brought Bama back to reality.

I still think Kentucky didn't want to look like they were caught off guard so they went and made the fast call to the guy they knew would come back.
I mean, after all, who would leave KENTUCKY!? Pope was going to come back to his alma mater, and it's an easy sell to the fans because 1. He won a championship there as a player, and 2. It's Kentucky, anybody's gonna win there, right!?
They weren't going to risk being publicly told no by anyone else, so they already had Pope on the hook.
