Well, it's finally here. Your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Washington State Cougars (no, not 40 year old women) for a 4 game series starting this Friday (double header), Saturday, and Monday.
Game times are:
Friday 12:00, then approximately 4:00.
Saturday 2:00
Monday 12:00
All games are on the ESPN app or SECN+.
In lieu of our man Bob Uecker passing, we now go to Yogi Berra.
"Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical."
As usual, GO HOGS!
My Friday has cleared up so I'll be able to take a stab at the pbp. I'll likely be watching the game on my phone, so it may be extra shitty pbp.

According to the broadcast, RickB was about 37th in line. Would have thought Razorback Nation's #1 fan would have been in the top 5 line waiters.
Top 1st.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: These new uniforms are just fucking beautiful. It's a damned shame that we made Hagen Motherfucking Smith play his last year with the godawful Jeff Long font across his chest. /rant)
Hartman (no known relation to Phil, David, or Mary) swings through strike four. 1 out.
Roy (no known relation to Siegfried or the tigers) strikes out swinging at three straight. 2 outs.
Johnstone flies out to LF. 3 outs.
Mid 1st. WSU 0.
Starting the season with a strikeout. Like it.
Second batter set down with a nasty cutter. Liking what we are seeing from Gaeckle so far.
Bottom 1st.
Davalan flies out to deep LF. 1 out.
Aloy grounds out to 2nd. 2 outs.
Maxwell pops out to 2nd. 3 outs. Fire Nate Thomspon.
End 1st. 0-0.
Davalan has a fucked up stance.
Encouraging sign...Aloy spat on two sliders away in his at bat. The pitch he grounded out on was a slider outer half that was borderline. Instead of screwing himself into the ground trying to hit it to the soup factory, he took a measured swing trying to poke it to RF.
Quote from: BleedinRed on Feb 14, 2025, 12:12 PMDavalan has a fucked up stance.
He's Canadian. They can't help it.
Top 2nd.

Hartman grazed by an inside fastball on a 1-2 count. Runners 1st and 3rd, 2 outs.

EDIT: Under review, as Souza dropped the ball. He picked it up and tapped the bag just ahead of the loafing runner. Call stands.
Mid 3rd. 0-0.
Eish. Falling apart in the 3rd.
That was a big strike out. Ump is being very generous, it looks like from the tv angle, for Gaeckle.
Sloppy third but no damage done.
Bottom 3rd.

Top 4th.
Johnstone pops out in front of the mound, caught by Iredale. 1 out.
Longo flies out to shallow CF. 2 outs.
Skjonsby with an infield hit to 1B...scorched grounder that Peppi knocked down, but couldn't get to in time. Probably should've let it go through to Souza. Runner on 1st, 2 outs.
Obenour flies out to RF. 3 outs.
Mid 4th. Still scoreless, still no hits out of the infield for either team.
I know it's the opening game, but not too long ago I was browsing either reddit or Twitter and I saw Hutch talking about how Dave changed up his approach to the offense this year. Sounds like it did wonders.

Then goes down swinging.
Some things never change.
Top 6th.

This pitching change brought to you by McEntire's NIL sponsors AARP, ReadingGlassesToGo.com, and your local Southwestern Bell Phone Mart.
Hartman strikes out swinging. 1 out.
Roy flies out to medium CF. 2 outs.
Johnstone hits one off the Hunt center. Would have probably made it to Kessler Mountain had the building not been there. 1-0 WSU. 2 outs.
Longo grounds out to Aloy. 3 outs.
Mid 6th. WSU 1 Fire Nate 0
To wish they had the radar for non conf games.
It's too high! Too high!
Ugh. McEntire gives up an easy blast. A 35 year old should know better.
Bottom 6th.
PITCHING CHANGE: Troy Shepard (wrong handed) in for Smith.
This pitching change brought to you yet again by the fact that left handed junk ballers own us.
Davalan singles to LF. Runner on 1st, 0 out.
Pickoff attempt thrown away. Davalan advances. Runner on 2nd, 0 out.
Aloy singles to LF. Davalan had to hold up with ball right in front of him. Runners 1st and 3rd, 0 out.

End 6th. Tied 1-1.
Helluva catch
Nice catch by centerfield.
Come on ump, that 6 inches below the knees
Above grumbling aside, there does seem to be early evidence of a smarter approach at the plate.
Obviously, the first game of the season it won't be fine tuned. But we used to have streaks of eleventy plate appearances resulting in either a strikeout or a ball in the air easily caught.
Top 7th.
Skjonsby flies out to deep RCF. 1 out.
Obenour singles to RF. Runner on 1st, 1 out.
Obenour runs on a ball in the dirt...gunned down by Helfrick. 2 outs.

PITCHING CHANGE: Bryce Chambers (RHP) in for Shepard.
Souza steals second. Winning run at 2nd. 2 outs.

Diggs strikes out swinging at some bullshit in the dirt...after watching two not elite breaking balls cross the plate. 3 outs.
End 9th. Free baseball.
Jeez. Calm down, announcer boy. He hit it straight into the breeze on a 44 degree day. It's not going out at that trajectory.
Diggs. Dammit.
Is it too early to say that we don't look much different from past years?
Might be another year where pitching is great and hitting is suspect or visa versa.
That second strike looked inside.
But the first one should've been plastered.
I'm sure it is miserable playing conditions today so I'll give them a pass. For now...
So we can't hit again?
Top 10th.
Obenour reaches on an error by Peppi. Runner on 1st, 0 out.
Cresswell sac bunts to Foutch. Runner on 2nd, 1 out.
Northrop taps weakly in front of the plate...Helfrick throws to Diggs in RF. E2. Obenour scores. WSU 2-1. Runner on 2nd, 1 out.
Watterson with bloop single to CF. Runners 1st and 3rd, 1 out.
Hartman pops out to shallow LF...Aloy made the catch with his back to the plate, turned and threw off his back foot to Helfrick for the double play. Tag play under review. Close but should stand. Umpire fuckery afoot. Apparently the call stands, although we currently have no explanation.
Mid 10th. Them 2 us 1
Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Feb 14, 2025, 02:49 PMSo we can't hit again?
we have carried over last years hitting to the first 9 games innings of this season.
Falling apart. We sure don't look really talented.
Hogs are hitting like it's the first game of the season played in 41 degrees and falling temps OR they think we are playing WSU in a super regional.
:o
What's the next sport we should look forward to? Do we have a women's beach volleyball team?
Helluva play
Turned it on for the 10th. Of course.
Foutch is wild as a new bronco. Even in the strike zone. 2 bad errors...sheesh.
Great catch, throw, and tag to end the inning though.
Definetly clipped the runner on the ribs. Out. Game saving out.
Bottom 10th.

Helfrick walks. Runner on 1st, 0 out.
Thomas squares (very early) to bunt, takes three balls and a strike, then walks on a pitch clock violation. Runners 1st and 2nd, 0 out.

Yes it does. Having a sore arm until April was the worst.
Glad to start with a win. Diggs and Aloy worry me when they get 2 strikes.
It's game one. To be clear, any criticism at this point it's just having a little fun.
I like the pitching today. Especially Geackle.

What's the woopig groupthink on the new approach at the plate?
It's two games in. Not sure we have seen enough appearances at the plate to properly assess the new philosophy.

Agreed. The 2 I saw that were called balls certainly looked like strikes. I was surprised the hitters laid off of them. 100 mph will pitch by itself but throw in something 10-12 mph slower for strikes and that is just stupid good.

I'll believe it when I see us hit in a regional/super regional/Omaha. That's the only hitting that counts for DVH. It sucks but that's the definition of success at this point. This early stuff is all prelude to the important stuff in May/June.
It's kind of nice to be at this point with our baseball program. I'll take it over whatever mediocre shit we are currently doing in football and basketball.

This is the first time in a long time I have seen us this deep in pitching. But hitting I don't know either. We always seem to go into slumps at just the wrong time. I just hope we slow our swings down some and hit singles and doubles more. HR are always nice, but swinging for the fence every time usually ends badly.

What excites me as much as anything is our Saturday and Sunday starters. I don't remember ever having 3 or 4 starting pitchers this good. Hagan carried us last year and Kopps in a different way back in '22, but after week 1, the depth seems to be as good as advertised.
We'll learn more about our hitters this weekend.
