Title: Hogs vs ULM—-Baseball
Post by: Son of Spam on Mar 03, 2025, 09:32 AM
Your #4 Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks for a 2 game series starting tomorrow at 3:00 and then Wednesday at 3:00. Both games will be on SECN+ and the ESPN app. As usual, GO HOGS!

Yogi Berra quote for the games: On being asked his cap size at the beginning of spring training he said, "I don't know, I'm not in shape."

I am sure these girls have nice personalities.....

They can change their first and second names all they want, but they'll always be the NLU Indians.

I'm as bothered by them dropping NLU as I am the Indians nickname.

I remember back in Florida State's heyday the Indians had the same helmets as FSU.  When NLU traveled to Tallahassee for their paycheck ass stomping they at least had the good sense to remove the arrows from their gold helmets to try to avoid antagonizing the Seminoles.

Almost time to get the show on the road. I will be your announcer for the games today and tomorrow. Not sure what I will be drinking yet. Maybe a glass of Caymus. So, let's get started.

Souza hit well for a stretch in SEC play, so you know it's in him.  Right now he needs confidence more than anything.  He needs to play every midweek game and against SEC cupcake to try to get him right.

Diggs...I don't know there.  He's a senior with a much lower upside than Souza and some others we have with another year beyond this one.  Not sure where he will fit when conference play rolls around.

I'd probably try the following based on how they're playing so far.

1B: Cozeal
2B: Souza
SS: Wehiwa
3B: Iredale
C:  Helfrick, with Becker catching some midweeks.
LF: Diggs/Boles platoon
CF: Davalan/Thomas platoon
RF: Maxwell
DH: Kuhio

If one of the platoon guys really starts heating up play them full time.  If both platoon guys at one spot are hitting and no one in the other one is getting it done, play your best three hitters regardless.

Agree. Souza sometimes looks like he is scared to be at the plate. On some of his swings, he seems to be falling back away from the plate. And low and outside is his krytonite.

I'd love to see Souza work with whoever seemed to fix Wehiwa's approach.  The latter seems to have figured out how to spit on the slider away, and has become more patient without overdoing it a la Diggs.  Even when Aloy makes an out his at bats usually look much better than last year.

His swing is electric. That's the thing that excites me about him, he's not just getting lucky. That will translate to SEC play.

Do we still want to fire Thompson?

My feelings too. Maybe he really did change the approach and we are starting to see parts of it now. I am hopeful that is the case.

Honestly I think the biggest thing is just having more talent...better hitters in the lineup, and more depth to push the guys who aren't producing to either improve or ride pine.

Whoever taught Wehiwa to be patient, go to the opposite field and spit on the slider low and away deserves a raise.  From reading offseason accounts it seems like that was more on his coach in the Cape Cod League than Nate.  But Kuhio is being much more patient this year than he did as a freshman at BYU so Thompson has to get some of the credit for that.

Last year Wehiwa walked 9.0% of the time and struck out 20% of his plate appearances.

So far this year those numbers are 9.8% BB and 11% K rate.

I honestly thought the walk rate was higher this year, but that's a massive improvement in the strikeout rate.

Agree. Example being Turner at the bottom of the lineup. His avg isn't outstanding but he gets on base a lot and has been robbed by some balls he smoked. We haven't had a guy that good in the 9 hole since Biggers.

Sorry, yes. No clue where I get Turner from.

Anyways, Thomas seems to make better contact, has more power, and gets on base better than any 9 hole guy we've had there in years. He's good enough to hit further up in the order but shows the depth we have.

Plus we have guys like Kozeal and Maxwell that can hit anywhere in the order. Deepest lineup we have had.

Who is?  No one will ever be the legend like Tanner English was.
