Title: Hogs vs Portland—Baseball
Post by: Son of Spam on Mar 06, 2025, 10:13 AM
Your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Portland Pilots (although I doubt any of them can fly a plane) for a three game series beginning this Friday at 3:00. The. The series resumes on Saturday at 2:00 and concludes on Sunday at 12:00 Noon. All games on SECN+ or the ESPN app. FYI, Portland had a WHP pitch a complete, perfect game earlier against Seattle. 90 pitches total. Of course, I don't think he has seen the type of hitting he will see here. As usual, GO HOGS!

And for your viewing pleasure, the Portland cheer squad.

Show-Me is thinking of WHIP which is walks+hits/IP.

WHP is Dirk's way of saying left handed pitcher (Wrong Handed Pitcher).  I'm left handed (and a WHP) and am very offended by his use of that term.  I'll be seeking legal representation for my pain and suffering.

He was picking his nose behind home plate on Tuesday.

Notice I don't call our guys wrong handed.  If we didn't have such a history of getting shut down by lefties, especially the ones whose best fastball wouldn't bruise a baby's cheek, they wouldn't get that designation.

TL/DR:   Take it up with Nate and Dave.

Haha. All good. I've been called it my whole life. Lefties can fuck your day up on a diamond.

I was just pissed they wouldn't let me play infield after 12/13 or so.

I'm cross-wired; write lefty but I'm right eye dominant and throw, kick, bat and golf righty. Shoot a handgun with my right but long guns are more comfortable on the left ( taught myself to shoot from the right because of eye dominance).

Began surgery as a lefty but eventually switched to using my right because almost no scrub nurses know how to load a needle driver for a lefty.

My nephews' 12u team is overloaded with lefties...four of them.  It drives me nuts that they always have at least one of them on the left side of the infield.  It's cost them a couple of games I've seen.

It's not like they are short on RH kids who could play there either.  To me it's doing those kids a disservice.  When they get to higher level ball they aren't going to have a clue how to play OF.

Full disclosure...one of my nephews is a lefty, and he either plays OF or 1B when he's not on the mound because that's what his dad taught him and what he thinks is best for his future.  And his RH brother is always either on the infield, pitching or behind the plate, so this isn't sour grapes because I think they ought to be playing elsewhere.

We're similarly wired.

Anything I throw is LH, hit LH. Shoot basketball LH.
Eat, write, hammer a nail, shoot a gun with my RH.
I played tennis when I was young and would serve LH then switch to RH for groundstrokes. My tennis coach said he had never seen that.
Yank my wank with my RH (TMI, I know)
Kick right footed.

So similar. Me:

LH:
Throw
Bat
Bowl
Punch

RH:
Racquet sports
Eat
Write
Fine motor (like a screwdriver or hammer)
Kick (RF)

It's like I'm left ARMED but right handed.

Same. I write, eat, shoot a rifle, play pool, left handed. Shoot a pistol, throw, hammer, or most anything else right handed. I can screw up with either hand.

Top 1st.

Nitwitz flies out to deep CF.  1 out

Bean bloops a single to LF.  Runner on 1st, 1 out.

Passed ball moves the runner to 2nd.

Hebert (no known relation to Bobby but I'm not ruling it out) strikes out swinging.   Runner on 2nd, 2 outs.

Howard (no known relation to DeArrius) walks.  Runners 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Katayama-Stall triples into CF.  Both runs score.  Portland leads 2-0.  Runner on 3rd, 2 outs

Scott grounds to Souza, high throw, but Kozeal brings it down.  3 outs.

Mid 1st.  Portland 2

NEVERMIND...just some format clean up.

Bottom 1st:

Davalan grounds out to SS. 1 out.

W. Aloy chops one over the 3B's head for a single.  Runner on 1st, 1 out.

Maxwell bunts for a single.  Not an attempted SAC given how late he squared.  Runners 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Kuhio doubles down the LF line, driving in his brother.  2-1 PU.  Runners 2nd and 3rd, 1 out.

Iredale rips one over the SS's head...gets past the CF to the wall.  Maxwell and Kuhio score. Iredale takes 3rd...likely a double and an error.  HOGS LEAD 3-2. Runner on 3rd, 1 out.

Kozeal grounds out to 2B.  Iredale scores.  HOGS LEAD 4-2.  2 outs.

Souza strikes out swinging at high heat. 3 outs.

End 1st.  Hogs 4 Co-Pilots 2

The Pilots have navigated rough seas to start the season and even though they have taken on a little water thus far into the season they are a tough ship to sink.

Said differently, they are the best 5-8 team in the country.

Fuck me.  We have bats.  Now, I've just jinxed the fuck out of it.

But I was wrong in my hyperventilation in Arlington.

Fun team to watch.  Hope it keeps going.  Any pitcher is going to hate going up against our current line-up.

I haven't felt this optimistic since 2018.

In other baseball news, I just got kicked out my first game as a fan.

Took my son to the VMI game this morning (where my wife threw out the first pitch) and he snagged a couple of foul balls. By the time I made it over to where he was, one of the players had already bullied him into giving 1 of them back. I pocketed the other one and the kid starts threatening me with getting the equipment manager. I politely tell him that he should do what he needed to do, but my son was keeping the ball. I was then told by some other field official if I didn't give it back he was asking me to leave.

I hope they get spanked.

Most probably don't remember it given our current status as one of the "haves" in the sport, but when a lot of us were at the UA the Hogs did the same.  They didn't have a ton of money, and sent the players to chase down foul balls.

Quote from: DirkPiggler on Mar 09, 2025, 03:48 PMMost probably don't remember it given our current status as one of the "haves" in the sport, but when a lot of us were at the UA the Hogs did the same.  They didn't have a ton of money, and sent the players to chase down foul balls.

A friend of mine in town said the players get demerits removed for each ball they bring back. So not sure if it's that, a budget thing, or both.

He gave one back and I helped him keep one, so we're square. I told him we'd know going forward that he doesn't get to keep the foul balls anymore so no sense in shagging them unless he wants to for fun, or see if the concession stand will let him trade it in for something like we did in Little League.

My best buddie and I used to shag foul balls and such at the old Cole Field when were your little.  Don't even remember how we got there, guess his parents drove us.

Not even.

I sat on a Little League board for 6 or 7 years.

Baseballs were never our concern.

VMI is some cheap asses.

I remember as a kid in Dover, if you retrieved a foul ball and took it to the concession stand, you got a free Coke.

A lot of pop ups to the warning track yesterday.  Hope we can reel some of that shit in before the weekend.

I wouldn't call those pop ups.  Kuhio did have a couple he just got under a bit.  Most if not all would've cleared the wall in Tennessee with 10-20 feet to spare.
