Title: Golf 2025
Post by: Doc Hogaday on Mar 16, 2025, 06:23 PM
Free golf at The Players. Spaun comes up just short on a birdie putt on 18 to force a 3-hole playoff w/ Rory tomorrow. I love this tournament.

Big opportunity this weekend for former Razorback Brooke Matthews. In three-plus seasons on the LPGA Tour, she has just three Top 25 finishes and ONE top 10.

She's 3-under today and 7-under total, just one shot off the lead at the Meijer Classic in Michigan.

Live coverage unfortunately starts at 3:00, but she should still be on the course for a few holes.

Great people.
Her dad is a retired JB hunt executive

Brooke and our son, Grayson grew up together

Playing with her dad , terry, tomorrow

She can flat play.

Well, I guess I'm a total jinx.

She fell all the way back to -4 at the end, tied for 44th place. Bummer.

True story. I suck so bad at driving, or using any club above a 7-iron. I took everything 4-iron and up out of the bag.

Used the 7 to tee off every hole but the short ones.

Not impossible but unlikely he did it playing the ball down or the tips. I haven't played in almost two years and shot a 39 on the back nine of a course I've never played. Played it down, but two up from the tips. Still takes hitting the ball well and putting good to put up a true good score.

I used to play with my BIL a lot. He'd hit so many bad shots and never putt it out. Always carding a mid to low 80's. Even when I obviously played better, I always took pride in keeping a real score, even if it was 100. Probably something similar here.

He's on another level right now. Kinda crazy how these guys go in cycles. Speith, Koepka, etc. all won their 3-4 in a few years and then fell off. Kinda same with Rory, but he did win another this year. Hopefully Scottie can keep it going and challenge Tigers record, but I think that's even going to be very tough with the talent out there. Now on to the Ryder Cup. Normally a home Ryder Cup is almost a guarantee, but I don't have a good feeling about this group. There will be several difficult decisions for Bradley to make.

I watch more golf than the average person, but 3 or 4 of our top 12 players could walk past me today and I wouldn't recognize them. Doesn't mean they can't play, but losing guys like Koepka, DJ, Speith, Reed etc is tough.

Nah, the U.S. will have this in the bag. It most likely goes like this...

U.S.
Scheffler
Spaun
Schauffele
Henley
Bryson
English
Morikawa
Cantlay
Thomas
Cam Young
Ben Griffin
Keegan (he ends up picking himself)

I'll put that lineup up against these guys
Rory
Fleetwood
Rose
Hatton
Rahm
Lowry
MacIntyre
Hojgaard
Straka
Hovland
Aberg
Fitzpatrick

At least 3 of those 4 are past their prime.

I like the new crop. Both teams will be relatively young again, thanks to LIV suctioning off the old dead weight for both sides.

I think it's setting up to be pretty epic.

Keegan will probably pick himself but hopefully we can overcome it.

I don't mean to suggest that any of those 4 should be on this team. Just that for several cycles those were solid players/leaders for the US. Seeing the names Speith,Reed,DJ,Koepka replaced with names like Griffin, McNealy, Harman, Novak doesn't inspire a ton of confidence.

Keegan did not select himself. Probably for the best. Captain's picks were Thomas, Morikawa, Griffin, Cantlay, Young, and Burns to go with the qualifiers of Scheffler, Spaun, Schauffele, Dechambeau, Henley, and English.

Only one of those is on the team.

Griffin has played extremely well this year, with 10 Top 10 finishes (second to only Scheffler), including at two majors. He has also won twice, which is also second most.

JJ Spaun (US Open Champion) is tough as nails and can putt the lights out. The same is true of Russell Henley. Cam Young has the course record at Bethpage Black.

It will by no means be easy because many of the Euros are also in top form. But I'm confident.

I'm glad to be wrong about Bradley picking himself and that gives me more confidence.

The final team selected looks more promising. When I mentioned those four guys, they were all in the Top 12 of the standings. I think Keagan did a good job selecting the team. I still think this is a less talented team than our last two home Ryder Cup teams ('16 & '21), but Keagan selected the best 12 available.

This cup will be super tight, and I think it's a toss up on paper.  The Bethpage crowd could likely be the difference.  The Euros that are hot right now are all RC vets.  Our hot guys for the most part have never played for a cup - big concern.

JT, Henley, Morikawa and English all playing bad to shitty. That's not good when you have just eight guys out there.

This needs to turn around quickish.

Griffin and Spaun have played otherworldly golf this year and both are riding pine off the bat.

Americans are too worried about being paid to play in the Ryder Cup. Europeans are like fuck that, we don't care about being paid.

It's about pride and golf.

Cantlay is, once again, playing the best of the US side.

I get the normal dislike, but he is nails in this event.

Fuck Henley. He's hitting it like a 10 handicap. Fuck JT. He's putting with a skillet.

Except for X and PC, we need a full reset of the pairings.

Just don't like Cantlay and his bitching about not getting paid to play in the Ryder Cup. Schauffle bitched so bad about it last Ryder Cup, he almost got kicked off the team right before it started.

Things are heating up. Ben Griffin rolls in a 56 foot birdie putt, but then Justin Rose rolled in a 44 footer to match him and tie the hole. Then Rahm rolls in another long birdie putt, and Scheffler has a chance to tie the hole with about a 10 foot birdie putt, but he missed it. Scheffler is off.

Yeah, I was re-thinking my premature comment earlier. If you don't send him back out, you have to use one of English, Henley or Morikawa. That's not exactly a king's buffet of choices.

He would generally be the most likely to follow up a bad round with a stellar one, especially in better ball where Young is likely to be steady at worst.

Something we can agree on.

It's because we always use Polo / Ralph Lauren and the designs are stuck in the 20th century.

Just west of Stuttguart in the big ditch/bayou meto drainage. There's about 12000 acres of contiguous water controlled green timber. It's divided into about 15 clubs. Mine is on the edge of it and not very big and we bought it 30 years ago. The values have gone up 10 fold in those 30 years. My godfather is a charter member of the one Burns just bought into. Only 3 players under par, 1 stroke lead.

Great golf.

Burns with a dagger on 18 to get a shot for birdie and a tie. They just said he's the only player in the final 9 pairings under par today.

I've never seen a professional golf course on tv that had bumpy greens. I guess that is part of the challenge at shinnecock.

Their greens are a blend of bent grass and poa annua which is a weed in southern yards. It shocked me that is used on the greens there on purpose.

3 rounds of 62 in this tournament.

It's only been done by 8 people ever at a major.

Granted this course is only par 70, and the weather has been great other than a little wind. That's a couple big assists.

These coastal links courses are designed to be played in shit weather so they usually aren't extremely long holes.

Obviously the LIV stuff. A lot of it comes from the mainstream golf talking heads have proclaimed that you just can't play with his method and be successful. Any success he has proves them wrong and bruises their vergina. He seems like a good guy and all the kids love him.

DeChambeau stayed one fairway over from my house when he won the U.S. Open and he came back Sunday night to a cul-de-sac jammed with people from the neighborhood who all just wanted to get a glimpse of him.

Instead of making a dash from the car to "his" house, he stayed outside with his fans for hours and made sure that everyone got a chance to hold the trophy. By all accounts he was gracious and kind.

Having said that, I don't think that has always been the case--particularly when he was younger--and his immature behavior alienated some of his peers and fans alike. The death of his father in 2023 affected him deeply and caused him to do some soul searching. I think that introspection (and a good PR team) helped him rehabilitate his image.

There continues to be some old schoolers like Brandel Chamblee who still seem to dislike him because they feel his dalliances with LIV and YouTube tarnish the Tour's image.

DeChambeau's animated complaint well after Friday's round didn't earn him a lot of fans in the locker room -- particularly Rory McIlroy, who said he was "keeping the tournament hostage."  "I won't pretend to be up here and defend Bryson. I'm not particularly fond of him," McIlroy said. "I think a lot of it's performative. I think a lot of it's for attention."  World No. 1 (Scottie) Scheffler was asked about McIlroy's comments ahead of the 3M Open.  "I've never been a big fan of personal jabs," Scheffler said.

The one who looks the worst here is the reporter.  Did someone seriously ask, "Hey Scottie, did you hear what Rory said about Bryson?"  Is the reporter an 11th grade girl?

Proper hydration is paramount; 2-3 beers per hour should be adequate.

Of course, having a much larger body surface area than your son and his pals, your requirements will be at least half again that amount.

That's the key, right there.  He's a good kid and (I assume) makes good grades.  Let him live a little and have some fun.

I remember taking my kids to the FedEx probably 12-14 years ago.  Another friend and his boys were with us.  My boys were 14-15 years old, but his were only 6 and 8.  We put his kids at the ropes on 18 green where the players walk out for a couple of hours.  They both left with over a dozen golf balls and a couple of gloves...all signed.

Quote from: arreferee on Aug 14, 2026, 09:14 AMThat's the key, right there.

I called him and told him about 18.  Yes, he's a great kid, works hard, plays baseball and golf and makes good grades. He does lawncare and there is no way I would do that in this heat.

I took my 10 year old last year. He loved it! Got high five's from several top players. I was surprised he was fine with all of the walking around we did.

Wish we could have made it over this year!
Holler at me next time you're over here and we'll grab lunch. We can talk about high school baseball stories too.

Scottie just hit out of a bunker at the green. The ball hit a sprinkler head at the edge of the green and bounced and ran across the green into the water. Second time I have seen a sprinkler head alter a shot in this tournament. They need to cover those things.

Like a machine. The other guys have to be wondering what they need to do. Even the announcers seem disinterested.

Saw that. Similar things have happened to me of a course a time or two. Ricochet into a bunker. Infuriating.

Figured I'd ask this here. What are some of the better courses to play in NWA? Playing the day before the Georgia game. I know Blessings and Pinnacle, but outside of that. Anywhere from Bella Vista to Fayetteville as home base will be in Rogers that weekend.

.  Outside of Blessings / Pinnacle next best options would be Stonebridge or Shadow Valley.  BV courses are fine but pretty crowded.   Always have Paradise Valley or Lost Springs for the "fancy" Lindsey courses.  Otherwise it's the creeks or the small Lindsey apartment courses

Ironclad rule of golf coverage:

If they cut to showing a player not on the leaderboard hit a chip around the green, the ball is going in.

Happened twice on CBS in the last 15 minutes.

Played the North course at Cherokee Village yesterday and was surprised at how good of shape it was in.  Greens were slow but covered and smooth.  Always had a good lie in the fairway.

Wasn't terrible for my first round of the year and second time to swing a club post rotator cuff surgery.  Couldn't putt for shit but I hit the ball pretty well.  It seems like the weight lifting is finally translating to the course as I've added about ten yards to each of my iron shots.

Shot a 78 yesterday and playing some of the best golf I ever have.

I saw a guy online a bit back who said you should play a three man scramble with yourself.  Play three balls and see what you score.  I did that and shot a 66.  Ever since that day, I've gone from 85'ish to 80'ish and high 70s.

Just knowing those shots are in the bag seemed to help me focus on everything better.  Several times while doing the three ball deal I hit two mediocre to bad shots and then really had to focus on number three.  That seems to have translated to my overall game.

Heard a similar (but reverse) story of someone who supposedly met Arnold Palmer. The guy was a pretty good scratch golfer and mentioned maybe going for the PGA Senior Tour.

Arnie's advice was, hit two balls for every shot. Play worst ball. If you score 75 or better, OK you can think about it.

Consistency.

They used to have a one-man scramble at a course I played quite a bit.  Only played it once and shot -7.  Since I could reach all of the par 5's in 2, it was a pretty good course for that format.  If I get two shots at the approach, and two shots to chip it close, I like my chances.

I play a few times a year, usually only 9 holes at a time.

If I was honest with my scoring I'd probably shoot in the 60's - 70's on 9 holes.

It's stupid.  If the guy tackled another guy, they would be screaming about toxic masculinity.  If the girl tackles the guy, it would be the best thing ever.  If you don't put a female golfer in the ad, you're not inclusive.

Wokeness will be the death of us.

Played in a scramble a few years ago that was set up in like a "Heaven" and "Hell" format. Some holes gave players advantages (Heaven), others...not so much (Hell).
One of the "Hell" holes was that you had to play the worse shot unless it was the putt that finished the hole.
