Title: Hogs vs Vanderbilt—Baseball
Post by: Son of Spam on Mar 27, 2025, 11:09 AM
Your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Vanderbilt Commode Doors for a three game series starting tomorrow at 7:00PM on the SECN (real teevee). The series resumes Saturday at 2:00PM and ends Sunday at 1:00PM. All games will also be on SECN+ and the ESPN app. Here is to coming back from that ridiculous loss to Missouri State. As usual, GO HOGS!

On Rickie Henderson: " He can run any time he likes. I'm giving him the red light." Yogi Berra

And here they are:

Know what I like about their cheerleaders?  They're hot, and smart.  They should be able to take care of me in the manner to which I've become accustomed.

True, but if the home plate and third base umps hadn't fucked us that runner would've never been on base.  Bat made it halfway across the plate, but even if it hadn't the pitch was easily in the zone.  Robo umps can't get here soon enough.

Helfrick needs to give us a chance and at least get on base. Ump loves that outside called strike. 2-2 count. Goes down swinging at a high fast ball, 1 down.

Souza grounds out to second. 2 down.

Thomas runs the count full. Walks.

Davalan flies out to deep center.

I think we've got a lot of offensive talent on this team, as evidenced by the fact that we're largely seeing non-producing players sit and not just eat automatic outs.

Peppi couldn't get going at 1st so he was replaced by Kozeal. Diggs didn't piss a drop at the plate so DVH retooled the outfield.

Take Diggs for example, specially. In 2023 he had the 3rd most AB's on the team. Last season he had the 2nd most AB's on the team. Conversely, he can barely crack the lineup this year and has had just 3 AB's in SEC play.

Famous last words, but it doesn't feel like there are glaring holes in the lineup like when we had John Bolton and Parker Rowland batting 8-9 in 2023, or Diggs and Ty Wilmsmeyer holding down the 8-9 spots last year.

The last out was Souza getting thrown out at second on his hit off the wall.

It was a very awkward slide where it looked like his right hand got caught in that stupid turf as he was going in head first. He could've broken his wrist.

The big question is why Vandy didn't extend the padding to the ground.  There is about an 8-12" gap at the bottom that leaves exposed brick/concrete.  Same in the outfield.

We are firing in all phases of the game right now.

Pitching, hitting, defense. We make a mistake here and there and we just keep on rolling, no sweat.

Hope we haven't peaked too soon and we are just this good. This is the kind of pitching and hitting that wins Natty's.

- Bybee went 4.0

Yep, but in the past we only had a couple of guys that could actually hit. It seems that everyone on this team (starters) and some subs can hit. You never know who is going to step up. And we have a lot of good pitchers. Hopefully we can keep it going. What I like, is if we give up a run or two, we go out and get them back.

Thomas who is our 9 hole hitter sucks at OF but can hit. He reminded me of that yesterday. Makes a boneheaded play in CF then comes up the next inning and hits a HR. Not trying to get the cart in front of the horse but it's hard to find a weak spot in our team at this point. Maybe we haven't ID'd our true closer/Koppsesque guy.

The 14 year comment was funny.

Don't agree at all on the SEC pitcher part.   He isn't tops in the league but he is a good SEC pitcher.  He is 17-5 with a lot of starts.   His record would be better if prior teams could have hit their way out of a wet paper sack.

Most of the time it's location with Mac. If he can keep the ball down and hit the corners, he does fine. When he leaves the ball up is when he has issues.

I hate to sound like I'm dogging the guy, because I like him and he's easy to root for. I hope we can come back to this post in June at point out how terrible my take was.

Overall he has been a good pitcher as your stats show, but right now, he's really struggling and I don't see how DVH can trust him in a tight spot.

He's getting hit hard just about every time he comes in, including the Missouri State game, where 5 runs scored while he was pitching in the 9th inning (3 of them his) and he recorded 0 outs. I know that's one game, but the scouting report is out on him and teams are just sitting on his cutter.

That said, he's very a very consistent pitcher and I'm sure he and Hobbs will figure it out. We will need his arm in June.

I don't think your take is an unreasonable position at all.  He does seem to be struggling to locate picthes as Fink pointed out.  And you can almost count on him giving up a bomb at least once an outing. Nice thing is we have a stable of pitchers so hopefully that allows him time to work through the struggles.

I think you may be misremembering, or maybe giving more weight to previous seasons.

The attached photo is every game log for this year for McEntire.  I marked average lines as light blue, good as green, bad ones as red.  In nine appearances that's six good, two bad, one average.  The two bad were against Michigan in Arlington, and Tuesday against SMS.

As @Barton Fink said above, it's all about whether he's hitting his spots.  Guys like Will who don't have velocity have to be precise with their control or they start throwing batting practice.  If I were DVH and Hobbs I'd watch him closely and have a quick hook.  Walk the first batter or give up hard contact to the first couple and he comes out right away.  And I'd probably avoid using him in a situation where a long ball will tie or win.

Fair enough. There's a good chance I am misremembering. I don't have stats to back up my argument. Mostly just selective memories of him getting hit really hard recently and against mediocre competition. To me, he seems to be struggling.
