Well, back to SEC play on the road at Florida. We start a three game series starting this Friday at 5:30PM on the SECN+ and ESPN app. Second game is Saturday at 2:00PM on SECN. Then we wrap up the series on Sunday at 12:00 Noon on SECN+ and the ESPN app. Hopefully we can get back to winning a series. Sweeping it would be nice. However it will depend on whether we give up three runs in the first inning or not. Maybe our pitchers can keep the ball low. Guess we will see. And, maybe the umps won't screw us. But, we know that probably won't happen. Anyway, GO HOGS!

I will not be available for PBP tomorrow or Sunday. Going to watch my grandson play. And, someone please check the site out. It is screwing up.
Not in 'sky is falling' mode, but we've lost 5 of our last 6, including 3 of 4 to unranked teams.
We're not as bad we think we are right now, but we're not as good as we thought we were.
Lost 5 out of 6 conference games, but there's too much talent on this team. Surely we get this figured out.
I didn't think there was enough to overturn. The ball looked like it was gurgling around in his glove even though it reached the glove before the foot hit the bag.
Oh well. I will miss TV for the next couple of days so maybe that will right the ship.

This.
Only 3 pages for this game thread. I think most of us realize what's in store.
Right now I don't trust any of our starters and only W Aloy at the plate.
We had company tonight but did have the game on.
We simply are not as good as we thought we were. It is clear we are not in a slump.
Pitching is an issue and batting against SEC competition has reverted to how it has been every other year under Nate's leadership. How many strikeouts did we have tonight? Bad swings? Bad approaches?
This will go down as one of the more frustrating seasons in a long time. So much talent and there will be little to show for it.
DVH confirmed Maxwell retweaked his hamstring :suicide: chasing Roots' errant pick-off attempt that scored Gators first run, that's why Diggs replaced him. DVH said Maxwell wont play tomorrow.
Need to play Boles over Diggs.

Disagree on the offense. We are indeed in a slump. We have talented hitters who have performed well for nearly 2/3 of a full season so far.
Our pitching was definitely overrated though. Or we are using them incorrectly. Whatever the reason, if they don't figure shit out we will be home for the Omaholidays.

I probably won't be available either. Maybe tomorrow, definitely not today.
It looks like we are back to the "go up and swing as hard as you can" approach. Hell, just make contact. And how the hell does a runner score from first on a missed pickoff attempt at first? We should have won that game by a score of 4-2. We gave them the run from first, then a 3 run HR. If, and I mean IF we get a regional, we won't come out of it again. Every team we play now throws us low and outside and we bite every time. They have all read the book on our hitters.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Florida guy hit that pitch out. It was almost as high as the one little Aloy swung at and missed over his head. Just getting metal on it seemed nearly impossible, much less enough to get it over the wall.

This narrative is dumb. We swept Vandy (on the road), who is ranked, and took 2 out of 3 (on the road) against a ranked Ole Miss team.

That philosophy on pitching is evolving some due to analytics, trackman, spin rate etc.
Some pitchers are better at the top of the zone while others are better down in the zone. I have no idea where they want Wood working. Just pointing out, that he may not be missing.
**Fair warning, I have a terrible record doing PBP.**

Shelton up. Runs the count full. Pops out to SS. Good job by Gaeckle to work back from 3-0. 1 away.

Here we go.
Thanks Feral. Good job.
Great to get the win to force a rubber match, but the game was a lot closer than the score.
We really didn't hit the ball well at all, and ended up with only 2 extra base hits.
If that first error in the 5th on a textbook double play ball doesn't happen, we likely don't have the scoring rally we put up and the game is probably a 1 or 2 run game.
Hopefully our bats come around and pitching shows up big again tomorrow.

Iredale flies out to medium CF. 3 outs.
Mid 2nd. Hogs 5 Boot material 1.
How many times have we been picked off this season?
Diggs comes up and I told my wife "this first pitch will be right down the chute and he won't swing." Then with a 3-1 count I told her "this next one will be right down Broadway and once again he'll watch it."
Now she thinks I'm a baseball Nostradamus.

It seems like this ump saw Heyman's HR on Friday and decided that was the vertical limit of his zone.
Glad we piled it on there...feel like we're going to need 8-10 to pull this one off the way Floorduh hit the ball in the first.
Bottom 2nd.
Stripling (if his nickname isn't Stripper they're missing a hell of an opportunity) walks. Runner on 1st, 0 out.
Wild pitch moves Stripper up. Runner on 2nd, 0 out.
Evans flies out to deep RF. Stripper advances. Runner on 3rd, 1 out.
Yost grounds out to first. Run scores. 5-2 HOGS. 2 outs.
NATO grounds out to 2nd. 3 outs.

Aloy the Younger strikes out swinging. 1 out.
Fraser grounds out to 2nd. 2 outs.
Helfrick grounds out to SS. 3 outs.
Mid 3rd. 5-2 us.

Apparently Dave has had enough of the piss missiles being peppered at all our guys.
PITCHING CHANGE: Ben Bybee in for Beetlejuice.
Hoser strikes out swinging. 1 out.
Lawson singles over Aloy's outstretched glove. Runner on 1st, 1 out.
Passed ball moves Lawson up. Runner on 2nd, 1 out.
Heyman pops out to Helfrick behind the plate. Runner on 2nd, 2 outs.
Crier flies out to the wall in deep CF...nice catch by JT Jr. 3 outs.
End 3rd. 5-2 us.
Helfrick costs us a lot of runs by letting balls get by him.
Do all catchers catch from one knee nowdays? It makes it difficulty to slide over to block pitches L to R.
There is an article on Viva El Birdos about catchers being taught the one knee down technique.
I am too lazy today to link the article.

Diggs is something like 10 of 60 this season.
I know DVH has seen Diggs potential in '22 and '23, but at some point, he has to move on. It's not just a slump at this point.
Bottom 4th.
Donay strikes out swinging. 1 out.
Stripper singles to RCF. Runner on 1st, 1 out.
Evans walks. Runners 1st and 2nd, 1 out.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: This color commentator is kind of a dumb shit if you haven't noticed. He's going on and on about how we shouldn't be worried about the runner at first, even though the last run scored primarily because a guy on first advanced to second unnecessarily.).
Yost strikes out looking (at a ball that looked high, but that's been this ump's zone all game). Runners 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.
NATO singles to RF. Runner scores. 5-3 HOGS. Runners 1st and 3rd, 2 outs.

If we're being honest, we haven't hit the ball well at all this weekend.
We made a living in game 2 in one inning on errors and free baserunners.
Today we've done virtually the same thing. We only have 3 hits and all were in the 2nd inning.

PITCHING CHANGE: Christian Rodriguez (RHP), owner of the best changeup in college baseball in spite of that ERA near 8 according to the fucktard in the booth, in for Philpott.
Aloy 1.0 strikes out swinging. 1 out.
Kozeal walks on four straight. Runner on 1st, 1 out.
Iredale takes two balls, and her comes Uncle Fester for another mid at-bat pitching change. Seems awfully early to give up on the guy with the best changeup in college baseball.
PITCHING CHANGE: Luke McNeillie (RHP) in for Rodriguez.
Iredale walks. Runners 1st and 2nd, 1 out.

Seer walks. Went from 0-2 to a walk. Runner on 1st, 1 out.
Donay ties it up with a double, with some help from Thomas kicking it to let the runner score from first. 5-5. FUCK! Runner on 2nd, 1 out.

Helfrick strikes out looking. Would've been standing on first without a half ass attempt to bunt a ball 18" outside and low. 1 out.
Diggs strikes out swinging, after watching two hanging sliders down the gut. 2 outs.

There can't be a worse hitter on the team. Play anyone other than Diggs.
Diggs just has a hitting philosophy of taking one right down the middle and then waving at one a foot out of the zone.
He really sticks to it.

Up 5-1 and we haven't pissed a drop in 4 innings since.
We're not winning this one. We haven't pissed a drop at the plate since since the 2nd inning, and Florida keeps scoring.

However, the throw wasn't nearly as bad as the announcer made it sound. Had Helfrick been in the proper position instead of nearly at the mound, the ball would've hit him where it was supposed to or close to it.

I'm down on Hobbs right now. People act like he's some fucking pitching whisperer. We hear about all the pitching depth, yet here we are giving up at least eight runs on a Sunday to a shit ass lineup. Most of us could've gotten Hagen Smith drafted in the first round. Our pitching this year has underachieved every bit as much as our hitting ever did under Thompson. Hell, last year too. He's built his rep on a Golden Spikes worthy year from two guys, in years where we didn't even make it to Omaha.

I agree. I shouldn't have stepped in on this one after Feral pulled us through yesterday.
Honestly this was probably the last one I could do this year anyway, unless we end up playing postseason away from home. Might be able to take one of the LSU games, but my record sucks this year anyway.
Seems like we are only good when playing at home.
This team is not playing well in any facet of the game.
We've regressed to the same old Nate Thompson plate approach, the book is out in several of our hitters. The TV crew yesrerday remarked about how many first pitch strikes we watch. We get into a lot of disadvantage counts because of it. And Florida had the second worst team ERA in the conference.
This pitching staff assembled by DVH and Hobbs is not good. We have 3 very iffy starters, Gaeckle who couldn't cut it and had to be moved to the pen, and a l highly inconsistent bullpen that seems to be just a select few guys who DVH trusts. McEntire is still the same old batting practice machine who's basically a midweek guy.
Our defense...we have a catcher who can't block and thus allows a lot of baserunners to move into scoring position, and we have a CF who is good for a critical error once a game.
This team is going to limp into the postseason like the 2022 team did. Who knows if they can dig deep and piece together a run like that squad did, or if they fold like a bad poker hand.
I nope'd out of watching around the 6th inning and decided to mow the yard and listen to back end of the game on the radio, and even Phil was uncharacteristically shitting on the team. He basically said in so many words that we haven't played as well as our record, and right now we're nowhere near the level of the likes of Texas, LSU and Tennessee.
I'm not done yet, but I'm also not optimistic.

I've disagreed with many things DVH has done the last few years, but his teams are usually at their best when they are backed in a corner. I'd expect Texas to get our best shot. Even though they are #1, I think this is our best shot of the remaining series to get a series win.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Apr 28, 2025, 10:34 AMYou say that, but when you look at the other teams in the poll and who's ahead of us we should probably be higher. Few of the teams ranked ahead of us have our resume. I definitely don't think we should be below Auburn who is 10th, for instance. I also doubt that all those ACC teams should be above us.
I'm fine with being there right now. Maybe it will help light a fire under their asses.
I am OK with #10, but kind of wish anywhere from 10-15. We seem to always play better as underdogs. I hope they get their shit together before these next series.
Tomorrow night's game canceled. They're blaming weather, but I bet we jumped on the chance to skip going to Springfield.

Especially since the series with Texas starts Thursday night.
