Well, time to get back on the horse. Our Hogs take on the Tennessee Volunqueers for the final SEC regular season series beginning tomorrow. Let's hope our bats wake up and our pitching is up to par.
Game times: Thursday, 7:00PM on ESPN2
Friday, 6:30PM on SECN+ and the ESPN app
Saturday, 2:00PM on SECN
And now, to put BOB to rest:

Also, fuck Tony Vitello and his egotistical brand of baseball he teaches.
Almost forgot...

Things got chippy with UT-Vandy last weekend. I wouldn't be surprised to see some sparks fly this weekend between Vitello and DVH, and the players will back each of their coaches up.
Fuck Tennessee (sorry/not sorry Mr Zorak)
Per DVH today, starters are:
Game 1 - Root
Game 2 - TBA
Game 3 - Wood

Interesting. I wonder who he's considering for game 2. Probably not Beidelschies on short rest.
I have a feeling it'll be Gaeckle or Bybee, but then again I'm usually wrong.
He did hint that they'll go all out to win game 1 (presumably because that effectively locks up a national seed) so we could see Gaeckle called on again in G1 if Jimenez struggles in relief and it's a tight game.
I get the feeling they'd like to throw Gaeckle out one more time in a starting spot to see how he responds and if he can be called upon as a spot starter in the postseason. Similarly, I get the impression that DVH doesn't trust Beidelschies at all.
Hopefully we're in a position to give Dietz more innings this weekend.

ESPN news for now.

Nope. Still shitty golf coverage.
It's on now. Magic!
Tennessee having ground ball issues
Are those really our only three angles?
To me, if you can't clearly see that he was safe, call on the field stands.
it was a bad slide. at the very least slide to the outside of the plate.
How do we not have a camera zoomed in?
They are hitting Root. Lots of hard hit balls.
And now he can't find the zone
Get Root out of there.
Bats in late season form.
Tennessee's pitcher isn't good and allows the most stolen bases in the country.
So naturally we can't hit him and can't steal on him.
Surprised that was fair
I just have a feeling Gaeckle is going to keep throwing up goose eggs and we are going to surpass Tennessee's 4.

We can't hit their pitching, and they're putting barrels on balls.

It's amazing how our seasons have regressed the last couple years. Start good -> peak mid conference -> tank atvthe end of conference.

But if we win the series, we should still be.
Except for a couple innings from Gaeckle, our pitching was shit tonight.

It's a legit concern. I gave up on Omaha weeks ago, so I'm just whatever about it.
I'm here right now because I hate most teams in orange.
That would have been cool
Arkansas is 1-9 with RISP (.111), Tennesee 3-7 (.429)

Funny how every coach in the country talks about how we out recruit everyone every year and have the best talent on the country. But, every year, we shit the bed with this talent. Is it coaching? Or do we really have the talent they talk about. Because it sure looks like some other teams are waaay better than we are every year. I have a feeling we won't make it out of our regional again this year.
I think we 100% make it out of the regional. I think we most likely make it out of the super.
We lose game 1 in Omaha we are done. We don't have the pitching to come out of the losers bracket.
Quote from: Son of Spam on May 16, 2025, 08:48 AMIs it coaching?
It's no secret I'm not a huge DVH fan. As unpopular of a take as it may be, and probably a little retarded too, I think he is a very good coach but not great.
I don't think his in game decision making, particularly with the pitching, is all that great. His teams have won the SEC regular season three times and the conference tournament once. I've never subscribed to the "post season is all we care about" talk. If you can't win your conference then winning in the NCAA tournament isn't likely.
His teams always have some issue. We can hit but can't pitch, like this year; or we can pitch but can't hit.
I'd take Tony V or Wes Johnson right now straight up.
With all that said, in no way am I suggesting he should be fired. He deserves to go out on his own terms. He has been great for the program and Hopefully he gets a championship soon.

I love DVH, but I'm also confident he'll never win one. I know that's heresy, but so be it.
Oddly enough, it wouldn't surprise me if his successor (presumably Wes unless he pulls a Tony V and wins a ring) came in and won a natty within the first few years. Sort of like how Ron Polk never won one at MSU and Lemonis (albeit not his successor) wins one in year 3.
Despite having extraordinarily good records every season since Covid, we seem to be snakebit in the postseason. We had a historically good 50 win team that couldn't make it out of the supers (hell, we were close to losing the regional final to Nebraska), and two teams that won 20 SEC games each that couldn't piss a drop in their own regional.
The only Arkansas team the last 5 years to make Omaha had to go on the road to do it, and that was a historically good infield, highly experienced, had two great hitting senior transfers in Turner and Lanzilli, and was a team that had a chip on its shoulder.
I'm not necessarily a fan of Vitello's method of having his team play with their piss hot constantly, but I'm also not sure DVH's "business as usual" approach works either anymore in terms of navigating the postseason grind. You have to have an edge to you to go far. Tennessee, LSU, and even Ole Miss had that.

There's a lot of swing and miss with Helfrick, but damn if he doesn't hit the absolute piss out of the ball when he makes contact.

If that doesn't work sell your house move buy a new tv and redownload the espn app. That usually works but then it buffers like a mofo

Nah. I just launched my own satellite.
Jesus, Iredale
Hell of a play by Iredale. Glad he is OK.
Lovely. It's like this pitcher bet on the game or something with these fastballs.
MAXWELL!
That was ruled a single? Little League rules?
Gibler doing pretty well.
Can someone post the score and inning occasionally?
Thanks

6-4 us, bottom fifth
Davalan is a hitting machine.
Pitching change. Doyle coming out after 104 pitches.
He struck out 10 but gave up 8 runs (6 earned)
Half a foot outside, blue must have been mesmerized by the curveball.
2 outs and we give up a 2 run HR. Now 8-6.
Quote from: Son of Spam on May 16, 2025, 09:12 PM2 outs and we give up a 2 run HR. Now 8-6.
We gave up a double right before it. And the homer was on a full count.
We literally never make it easy on ourselves
Tennessee can flat out hit. They've got 14 hits thus far (we have 12, but still).
Nice way to get out of the inning
Shit. We needed at least 1 insurance run there.
Quote from: Show-Me Hog on May 16, 2025, 11:02 AMSo you can line up for Friday's game (fine), but ALSO save your front of the line spot for Saturday's game, by leaving your tent up while you are in Friday's game?
I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with Rick on that one. The line starts new once people shuffle into Friday's game. If you're not there, you're not there. Pick a lane.
I hate to interrupt the in-game thread for this, but as a counterpoint, people attending the current game shouldn't be punished for doing so. They shouldn't allow the line to start forming until a reasonable time after that game.
I don't like trotting Foutch back out there for the 9th after a bit of a shaky 8th.
Oh furk, here we go with the free passes.
And capped it off with a sliding catch
What an adventurous play to end the game. Like me he must have thought it was deep off the bat.
Hope that solidifies a top 8 seed.
Unnecessary slide but we'll take it.
I think it would have been an easier catch if he didn't slide.
Edit-TRS beat me to it
I'VE NEVER DOUBTED THOMAS AS A CENTERFIELDER! (I've absolutely doubted Thomas as a centerfielder)
Good series win.
Win tomorrow
Quote from: Thin Red Swine on May 16, 2025, 10:02 PMUnnecessary slide but we'll take it.
Yeah. I don't know if he was trying to make a circus catch or not, but if he had missed it, I may have benched him. However, nice win.

If he drops that, a run scores and the tying run is probably at 3rd because Davalan was playing no doubles just off the line in LF and was too far away to back him up.
To quote Lou Brown in Major League: "nice catch Hayes, don't ever fuckin' do it again."
I think we will see their lefty that only threw either 3 or 6 pitches the other night to get Kozeal out.

D1 Baseball had us projected as the #3 national seed coming into this weekend. They also had us, LSU, and Texas as national seeds locks from the SEC coming into this weekend.
We're fine.
yeah, the win yesterday secured it for sure.
we also earned a double bye in the sec tournament.

eATMe and a Georgia tied in the top of the seventh, so you know it will run over into our slot.
As usual, we are on the app right now.
Tenn with runners at the corners, no outs. And now 1-0 with runners at first and second.
Just tuned in, Wood looks sharp.
Quote from: Son of Spam on May 17, 2025, 02:10 PMTenn with runners at the corners, no outs. And now 1-0 with runners at first and second.
Maybe they'll just keep the game on the app then
Like I said earlier...we will just have to outscore teams because our pitching is average at best.
I turn the game on and Tennessee already has a run and 2 runners on base. WTF
Nearly 30 pitches for Wood in the first.
Quote from: buff2.0 on May 17, 2025, 02:11 PMMaybe they'll just keep the game on the app then
Nah, we will get our asses kicked for all the world to see.
Nice run by Helfrick to get to first
DVH isn't kidding about Helfrick being one of the most athletic catchers he's ever had.
I wish we could get all of our hitters hitting at once. Kozeal now seems to be in a small slump.

Wehiwa was until that 1st inning double. He was something like 4 for his last 25.
Wood's already allowed 6 hits in 2 innings
Wood does not pitch low, ever. His strikes are high strikes. His balls are even higher, or in or out.
Is one of the coaches telling our hitters to take the first pitch right down the gut every time or are they doing that on their own?
Quote from: Son of Spam on May 17, 2025, 02:50 PMIs one of the coaches telling our hitters to take the first pitch right down the gut every time or are they doing that on their own?
Feels like half our lineup watches first pitch meatballs, and the other half swings at the first regardless of where it is.
Has Thomas EVER seen an advantage count?
He is literally always at 0-2. Always.
Wood has allowed way too much traffic on the basepaths through 3.
Peanut butter-no jelly, ham-no burger, hitting-no pitching. DAMN! We ain't never got two things that match.
Wood is done after this inning.

Bases loaded no outs. Our nemesis.

Booyah notherfuckers

Vols with another pitching change.

2 hours in and not halfway through the game...

Maybe he will portal to us next year.
Wehiwa was like "I can hear coach talking about me, gotta do something I guess"
We watch more first pitches right down Broadway....
And that's why he's not a starter this week.
Couldn't have been set up better on a tee
Here they come. We never make it easy.
"Busch light does not make a good aloe"
😂
Someone else has taken over the Hog Pen acting a fool. Rick B must have a sad.

Why? We're a good team. It was at home, where we have lost 3 games all year. 2nd in the SEC coming into this series. We were predicted to win the series.
I don't understand why our fans don't think our baseball team is good. They have won 43 games. It really blows my mind...it's like our fans don't understand that we're good.

yeah, it's crazy.
we play in the best conference in the nation. 6 teams in the top 10, 6 with 40 or more wins (vandy with 39). but because every game isn't a win we are bordering on suckage and victories are critiqued out the wazoo.

That's damn good context on how good we've been this season.
The Vandy sweep seems to have faded from memory, but it was/is definitey a resume and RPI booster, especially since it was on the road.

I think people forget how baseball works. You aren't gonna have everyone hitting on all cylinders all the time, great
teams get blown out and anyone can beat you on any given day.
The questioning/critiquing DVH receives is pretty crazy.
