Title: U.S. Open Golf
Post by: Show-Me Hog on Jun 13, 2025, 02:30 PM
Might as well start a thread.  I didn't even know it was happening until I saw a story this morning.

Looking at the leaderboard, the only one whose name I even recognize....I have noted.

-4 Spaun
-4 Lawrence
-3 Burns
-2 Griffin
-1 Hovland (Viktor I know)

That course looks like a goofy golf course.

Lawrence was in contention at last year's Open Championship, until Xander went on that run on the back 9 on Sunday. He's a South African who mostly plays on the DP Tour. (European Tour)

The Third?

I'll help you out.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip.
That started from two sets of tees.
For a national championship.

The fave was a mighty stoic man,
The contenders brave and sound.
156 players teed off that day.
For a five-hour round.
(A five-hour round.)

Balls started flying into rough.
The feeble minds were tossed.
If not for the courage of the caddie crew
All thinned shots could be lost.
(All thinned shots could be lost.)

The leaderboard settled into this
Eclectic set of names:
With Gilligan (Im)
The Skipper Too (Rahm)
The Millionaire (Thriston Lawrence the Third)
And a Spaun...
The Movie Star (Koepka)
The Professor (Spieth) and
Si Woo Too

Here on Stressed Golfers' Isle!

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that.

I wrote that as part of a first round recap for a golf pool I run for the majors.

By the way, Lawrence was in the thick of things at the (British) Open last year until Xander cruised away on the back nine. He's been a very good player on the other side of the pond, won Rookie of the Year on the "European" tour in 2022.

A few years ago I went to a vendor meeting in San Diego and they had a golf outing at Torrey Pines a couple weeks after the U.S. open.  They left the tourney cut for a few weeks for folks that wanted to play it.

Most unfun worstest round I ever had.  Having to hit into that rough without a dude with a little flag to show where it went is impossible.  At 2nd tee we changed the rules quite a bit so we could actually finish. Between us I bet we lost 60 balls.  Luckily the vendor gave us all 2 dozen balls for the event.

I played the Torrey Pines rough without it being US Open height and it was the toughest surface I've ever played.

Oakmont would be the same for us regular Joes.

I'm generally pulling for an American for our national championship. I think I'm going to pull for Scott over Burns. Fuck LSU.

Go hovland. I'll always pull for a razorback, even though I usually prefer an American win the US open

Been a big Scott fan for 15-20 years. Love his swing. Hope he can pull this off, but not the ideal start on the first hole.

When was Hovland a Razorback?

I'll take Scott.

Hovland was never a Razorback. As the best golfer on Woopig, I think I could break 100 with today's conditions.

Okie State I think without looking it up.  I think he was one of the guys I followed around at the Western Am at Alotian a bunch of years ago.

The winning score will likely be over par now. Maybe Even. I'd certainly take that right now.

It might even take -1 to win now. The question is whether there is enough daylight. Hard to believe they will finish.

This is some great golf.

I mean, it's awful golf, but that's great.

The left handed guy in the clubhouse at +1 is going to win as everyone else falls away.

Oops Spaun has an eagle putt after driving the green. So I am probably wrong.

I was his official walking scorer on Saturday at the Cognizant Classic back in March. He had such a good demeanor, locked in to every shot.

He made one bogey in a 4-under round and it was after a bad break on a tee shot. The way he played made me think he'd be a good US Open guy, keeping the ball in play and flushing shot after shot.

Super nice guy, too.

Nice. I'm a standard bearer at the FedEx St. Jude in Memphis and I also caddy in the ProAm. All the players I've encountered have always been really great guys.

I've seen that too. I just think they are both a little socially awkward and not used to being in that situation. It was sort of an awkward situation. Guy just hits ab65 foot putt to win and here's your baby to take care of while I get the other one.

One of their kids was sick. He was up at 3 am on Sunday morning to go get medicine. I don't know the specific part of his story you're referencing, but this would likely be a contributing factor.
