not buying the texass hype at all. only 3 returning starters on offense. replacing 4 out of 5 o-linemen and one of those replacements got a knee yesterday.

I really think we win 8+ games this year. I think 9 is likely and 10 is achievable. There isn't a single team on the schedule that terrifies me. They all have their issues.
I'm okay with the fan base undervaluing the team. I get it and can't say anyone is wrong.

Never mind, I had somehow pulled up a thread from 2023 in the Razorback Football thread and saw his name. Sam was leaving him at DB at the time.
So, I only know Greens name.
There are 30 seniors on this year's team.
A bunch of them are portal players who just got here.
Most years if you had 30 seniors, you'd be contending for a conference championship.
That's all the sunshine I can pump.

I know we have a Shaq and a Kobe on the OL, that's fun.
Undefeated this year, until we're not. I do think we'll get 8-9 wins, that's the most sunshine I can pump.
Let's start it off with Special Teams. We should have a solid group competing for the starting role. A roster of highly rated punters and kickers. Most have been on campus for 2 years now.
Special Teams.JPG
I think this group can compete in the SEC.
Devin Bale is on the Ray Guy Award watch list. Put some respect on his name!
Hopefully Pitt doesn't have to stoop to telling Mark May and Lou Holtz to "put him in the Ray Guy!"
He didn't have any accolades coming out of high school. At least none that I could see. He has a lot of experience though and has been solid for the Hogs.
QBs...seems like we have the credentials. If one of these guys (Green) can manage to put it togehter between the ears, I think we can compete with almost anyone in the conference at the QB spot.
QBs.JPG
The ball carriers. Again, solid group that can compete with just about any other team in the SEC.
Backfield.JPG
Wish we had one more fullback.

Hell I can maybe get the QB and that's about it.
When players became yearly unrestricted free agents my give-afuk reduced greatly
TEs and WR.
The tight ends are not impressive. We need Jaden Platt to be something.
Wide Receivers; on paper we should have guys who can get down the field and make catches. Downfall could be between the ears more than talent.
Catchers.JPG
Rounding out the offense...lineman
We have guys who have the experience and the physical traits. Heavy on tackles. Hopefully the incoming transfers can solidify this group by giving it talent and depth. No reason at this point to think they can't deliver.
O Line.JPG
Offense and Special teams takeaways...
We have the offensive talent across the board to be better than a 6 win team. I'm not sure why anyone would look at the guys on that side of the ball and be anything other than optimistic. Same for special teams.
I'll post up the D side of the ball maybe tomorrow. As Forrest said, "I'm pretty tired. Think I'll go home now."

3 guaranteed wins on the schedule in Alabama A&M, stAte, and MooState. Beat Memphis and that makes 4. A second SEC win makes 5 on the season. I think he's spot on. We might jump up and beat Texas but we are just as capable of losing to someone we have no business losing to.

Every team he listed; we play them every year. Those teams are not materially better this year than they have been in previous years.
I don't get the thought that everyone gets better but poor ole Arkansas will be the same or worse. We ahve talent. We have good coaching. We will be better.
Again, on the offensive side of the ball we have plenty of talent to compete against every team we play against. Havn't looked at the defense yet so the analysis is incomplete.

If I knew an angry Bobby Petrino was in charge of preparing both sides of the ball for the season, I would be a lot more optimistic. He would have already beaten Sowders to death with a motorcycle helmet.

Only position groups that look to be improved is OL and QB (in theory)
Everywhere else not so sure...
QB is good
RB is good
WR is good
OL is good
TE is okay
Offense won't be our issue
DB is okay
LB is meh
DL is good
Defense will be serviceable
Special teams will be great.
9 wins is the mins.
Is WR good?
No way DL is good. I've heard this shit for years and years and they never do anything. We haven't had a good DL since 2006.

On paper we should have good talent at the WR position. On paper...
Like all our positions, the DL will have to prove it. We look to have decent talent in the starters and a little depth. I don't think they will be tops of the conference but should be serviceable. Linebackers will get a lot of opportunities to pad tackle stats.

we've even had a big white guy senior transfer that wasn't supposed to do shit that ended up being a surprise player...and played for the Commanders (Redskins) for a few years. Not sure if he's still there.

The Jones kids were underrated. Surprised one of them didn't make it to the league.
Bobby P is an excellent talent evaluator much as an offensive mind. The "diamonds in the rough" recruits generally is hopium but a lot of his 3 star guys actually have played above their ranking and gone on to the pros.

Basically they were looking at all the measurables and trying to work out how a kid would progress once they hit the SEC level. They often went after poor kids that hadn't been spoiled and far less likely to have hit their peak as athletes. In saying all that I imagine it's changed a lot now that we are mostly going after transfers over first year freshman as most everyone is. The diamonds in the rough are now the Isaac TeSlaa's of the world that are going to be unicorns for the most part.

Byran Jones was below SEC average and never pissed a drop. DD showed early promise and his last two years just sort of flatlined. It's weird how Wise, Philon, and Flowers became much better players once they got the hell out of here.
Monte Harrison had TD catches of 70, 63, and 45 yards in the scrimmage. So that means he probably won't see the field.

Philon and Flowers were really good here. Jones and Jones were replacement level, but still far better than most we've had before or since in the SEC era.
The biggest issue in those guys not performing as well as they should have here was the fact that BP kept moron placeholders as defensive coordinators...almost certainly because the good ones didn't want to work for him.

Bad? May be more interested in celebrity status than actually working. NFL success may not translate to college game. If his head isn't in it, could flame out spectacularly.

I don't know that we'll have the financial package in place to bring in Jimbo who no doubt will take a hit on his next gig but I don't know that he's getting something like 7 mil to come to Arkansas. I figure there's probably a few places that would pay that for him though.
We could potentially have a Jimbo Fisher, BMFP, and maybe a Dave Aranda (DC) in a new staff next season and I wouldn't be mad at that.

jimbo doesn't need money, his aggie buyout was guaranteed. with pittman making $6.4 mil, 7 million, or close to it, is what it's going to take to get someone who has proven himself in some capacity. i bet it will certainly be the case for lashlee.

He was the least organized person we've had in a coaching position. Yes, that includes Morris. Do you really want someone who likely can't even balance his checking account and probably has 15,000 unread email notifications running an organization of that size?
Remember that this is the guy who couldn't think beyond the current year in terms of planning a roster. Short on LBs this year? Sign 10 of them and no CBs. Next year when you don't have enough corners, sign 12 of them and no WRs. We always had at least one position group that was nearly out of qualified personnel, in spite of the fact that Nutt was pretty good at recruiting and identifying players (outside of QB).
Nutt would be good in a fundraising role. That's about it.

I wouldn't touch any version of Frank Broyles ever. The guy was a good coach. He was an absolutly shitty AD. Exhibit A: look at the head coaches he passed on in favor of who he hired. Exhibit B: look at what he did to Nolan.
I legit don't understand why people keep thinking Nutt is a serious candidate for the AD spot if/when it opens. He hasn't worked a regular gig in years now and has ZERO experience as any kind of administrator or as a GM type which will be more of a requirement moving forward. Even in his prime Nutt's main motivation was to find a cushy soft spot somewhere (between Donna's legs) and only got off his ass when it looked like he was gonna get fired by Paw Paw.
This is certainly an Arkansas fan's worst nightmare and we can't help ourselves from thinking that we'll hire the way programs hired 40 years ago. But that's unlikely to be the case. We'll hire some gender neutral Wal-mart approved simp and you'll be told to like it.

JFB was a great AD...one of the best in the country...up until about the mid-late 80s, which was why I specified the time frame. Think what you will of him based on the last 20 or so years he was there, but without his influence before senility set in Arkansas would likely be in Conference USA or some similar mid-major shitpile right now.
Hatfield over Johnson was absolutely a defensible move at the time it happened. Ken was national coach of the year, having just won ten games at Air Force (which was a 2-3 win team annually prior to his arrival) and beaten Notre Dame in South Bend. Johnson was piddlefarting around winning 6-7 per year in Stillwater. Obviously hindsight tells us JFB made the wrong move, but he didn't have that benefit at the time.
Sutton and Holtz were obviously great hires. Ford was on paper. And yes he botched the handling of Nolan, but he also hired Nolan when no one else at a comparable program would have. Also remember that he tried to hire Tommy Tuberville over Nutt...had an agreement with him before Quinn Grovey fucked it up....and Bill Self over Stan Heath...also had a verbal deal with him before John White botched it in a DEI move.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Aug 12, 2025, 10:59 AMJFB was a great AD...one of the best in the country...up until about the mid-late 80s, which was why I specified the time frame.

Quote from: animal on Aug 12, 2025, 10:54 AMI legit don't understand why people keep thinking Nutt is a serious candidate for the AD spot if/when it opens.
We'll hire some gender neutral Wal-mart approved simp and you'll be told to like it.
this. I don't have any confidence in this man as any kind of administrator. What has he done since 2011 besides do these pop up gigs. He probably doesn't even own a computer or know how one works at this point: he's probably still using a HTC evo for a phone

I actually think Nutt might do alright as an AD now. ADs no longer manage the sports that matter, that's the GMs. And we know Nutt is lazy so he would definitely have no problem lettjng a GM do the hard managerial stuff. That would leave Nutt to be go around doing television, radio, podcasts and all the general "people helping". He could schmooze the high rollers and tell them Uncle Rico stories.

Maybe the next gen AD is purely a fundraiser who reports to the GM. I thought it was interesting that Andrew Luck as the GM terminated Stanford's football coach last year. Maybe that's the new org chart.

But yes we have a lot of people that still use AOL and Earthlink email. Gmail is really infuriating some times because it'll let in all kinds of spammer and phishing emails but by god you send a legit email to somebody and they "didn't get it" because it went to their spam folder. :eyeroll

Bobby P sounds highly optimistic about QB, RB, and OL. He sounds cautiously optimistic about WR. The only position group he sounded down on was TE.
Special teams should be marginally better than last year.
Sounds like we should be pretty good on offense, and it'll be up to our defense to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. That's certainly sounds like an Arkansas team.

The last few year A&M spent an ungodly amount of money on "proven talent and difference makers" only to get their ass handed to them by many teams who spent far less.

So, according to this guy, Pittman was done last year and was heading to the house with a negotiated lower buyout. His agent stepped in and said "No, we'll take it all", so he is back but everyone knows he is done after this year and we are going to suck with his buyout falling a lot. Guy claims to know. Other stuff too with BMFP and Travis Williams almost getting into it at practice.
Arkansas talk is in first ten minutes.
The negotiated lower buyout is not true. The coaches getting into it is.
i have a feeling this was the inside news htl refused to share.
there's no way pittman was going to retire with half the buyout. and even if true, there's no way his agent, regardless of who he is, could tell yurachek no, it doesn't happen that way. if piitman wanted to be gone the check would be on the desk before he left the room.
if the coordinators got into it because the scrimmage got chippy, where's the downside to that? beats the shit out of apathy. and finally the dig at the rivals guy, whoever that is, shows me this is just another wannbe 'insider'.
my take anyway.

They were never taking a lower buyout. The coaches and wives all hate each other.
Last I saw Bobby looked like he'd been in the gym too. I wonder how mean he could get against a guy like T-Will. What did Pittman say to break them up, "Aw, shucks, guys let's all be friends and go to that strength and conditioning guy for some orange slices and team togetherness therapy."

A surprising fact is Samwell I think loves yelling f bombs more than CBP. I think CBP is softer these days. I went to a couple spring practices in that 2009-10 run and the abuse was brutal.
I believe the buyout stuff. Makes sense. Now, how it probably happened is that HY and Sam had an agreement in principle, agent gets involved and Sam's like "What agreement, I want my full buyout?" That kind of shit happens all the time. It fits. Sam is essentially a weak man he wouldn't stand up to his agent.
There was never a scenario where a lower buyout was happening.
an agent wouldn't even be involved in that scenario, except to get his cut of the buyout, he has no say.

Sure he would happens all the time. People are getting a divorce. They start talking one day and more or less work it out. One of them says, "Okay, let me talk to my attorney and get it drawn up" All of the sudden after talking to his attorney, he is all fired up and there is no deal. A year later and another $15k in attorney's fees, they settle pretty close to what they talked about and agreed on.
Like I said, happens all the time.
So he's leaving for sure after this season no matter what? I sure af hope so. I guess if no one is available when he finally pulls the trigger we will just have to sit around and have Bobby as our head coach till someone else comes along.
IF we pull the trigger, I hope we immediately turn around and hire Petrino. No fuss, no bullshit, no red ties at Powerhouse. Just hire the man and be done with it.

If the money was reasonable Sam would have been a fool to turn down the chance to retire with most of the money versus having to go back on the road kissing high school kids asses for some other program.
Jimmy Sexton could also have a contract with Sam that he is entitled to a percentage based upon the full amount of Sam's contractual buyout. In that situation Sexton could "force" the full buyout. Or at least force Sam to pay the full amount he would owe Sexton if he received the full buyout.
Quote from: animal on Aug 14, 2025, 07:34 PMBut what if he beats somebody and there's a contract extension with a 50 million dollar buyout package. We still have HY as the AD you know.
Again, we're somehow going to beat Texas to get bowl eligible. The University will be so busy making room for a new banner and marketing commemorative VHS tapes of the game that they won't notice us lose by 13 to Missouri to end the regular season.

that worked out so well with bert and morris?
pittman is not required to take any college assistant or coordinator job. the contract states: head coach of d1 school or head or assistant coach in the nfl. i don't think the mitigation extends after he reaches 65 years old. he'll be 64 this november.
Edit: had to edit the state employee part as it didn't matter. he would be at retirement age at 65 regardless.

sorry, but this seems totally dumb to me.
sexton represents saban (still), deboer, dabo, kiffin, sark, james franklin, and dan lanning among others. he would get a percentage of any of his client's buyout. but it's sam fucking pittman, who's buyout is less than half of those guys, who he's going to try and juice the contract?

Because he is proving a point. He is fucking with HY who only hired Pittman because he was sick of Sexton and very publicly said so, if you will remember, only to see Pittman hire Sexton a few years later. HY was gonna change the way coaching contracts were negotiated, yada ya yada ya. Now, six years later he is trapped by his own stupid contract and the very agent he publicly railed against.
Even if that isn't what happened, it's the most Arkansas story ever. And it can't be denied that Sexton has had a hardon for Arkansas since Nutt. He has fucked us half a dozen times that we know about.
If our defense isn't completely porous and we lose a bunch of Big 12 score games, I'm beginning to think we are going to be sneaky good. Not double digits wins good, but like 8-4 good.

That might be true if we had a close to average D-line but everything I've seen so far is leading me to believe they are baby shit soft. That'll never work in the SEC.

I haven't seen the actual contract, so I don't know the full details of the duty to mitigate. If what you say is accurate then it's even further reason why Sam wouldn't budge on the buyout.
As for Bert and Morris, I had no problem with attempting to enforce the clause with them. Especially Bielema, as he was essentially working for free for the Patriots on our dime.
it's in the termination for convenience section, page 3 of his contract.
i looked it up only because i wondered what kind of mitigation language was in there.

Thinking back on it, that's about when most of the admins started to bail. The deal with muzzy's secret board was because he wanted to take down oinkx. He thought he could bring a lot of those posters to the secret board and he did bring a few. It was just so dumb and so against what I thought woopig was. When the vibe of the board turned more conservative, the rest of them just faded away.

That's not how I remember it but all of those posts are long gone thanks to the former board owner...
I just remember Notas posted something that went over everyone's head as was often the case and at some point someone in P&R managed to spin it into something racist. I never believed that was ever anything that even crossed his mind, but I didn't know him personally so who knows.
That was typical Woopig twisting what people say and then a dozen come in for the dog pile. He still posted after that but I don't think he was ever really the same and eventually just faded away. There may have been some other incident that I wasn't aware of...but whatever. He's gone.
I vaguely remember in the admin forum my argument was something like we have to strike that balance between comedic value and racist. What was said if anything was meant to be funny and not racist but some people got their panties in a twist just to be offended. There were some admins that agreed and some that didn't.
At that time I never really saw the board as left leaning or right leaning...it was just a board where anybody could make a complete ass out of themselves. If so they would be properly taken care of in the finest of woopig traditions.

Here is the rub, and where I might agree with Tex and others; I don't think Sam is a 9-10 win a year coach. He is probably a 7-8 win a year guy with the occasional 9 win season. That isn't good enough to keep a coach. Same reason I wanted Nutt replaced. I don't want anyone to think I'm anything other than okay with replacing Sam.
But we ain't losing or having a close game with either A-State or Memphis.

Pretty much in the same boat. I think his record is as good as his assistants. He doesn't have the support (it seems) to bring in top money from donors for NIL. Which equates to talent which we lack. I do think BP and TWill could win big if they had better talent to work with.
I don't think we will lose to Memphis or Arkansas State, but based on Sam's history, at least one of those games will be a nail biter through the fourth quarter.
Of course, we will attribute it to looking ahead or keeping things vanilla for Ole Miss and Notre Dame, but it will likely be due to a boneheaded play at the worst possible time, a false start penalty out of a timeout, or a stalled drive from a dropped ball or fumble. Or because we simply took our foot off the gas - which is a token Pittman strategy when we have the lead.
I hope I'm wrong and we soundly beat both of those teams like we should. We do that and I'll feel a lot better about the rest of the season.

Fair assessment, but it's been proven over the last three years that Sam will cost his coordinators a game or two per season with either indecision or poor choices that have to be made by the head coach. The 7-17 record in one score games is a horrible look for any head coach, particularly when two of the 17 are Liberty and BYU at home, and several others are games where we had fourth quarter leads.
People make the faulty assumption that the talent deficit between haves and have nots in the SEC is greater than it is. I blame the recruiting star system more than anything, as people seem to think it's a linear relationship.
Alabama, LSU, and Georgia have rosters that are made up of four and five stars. For the sake of argument lets average that out and say their composite roster is a 4.5 star. Arkansas is and has always been...even in times of success...three star U. But those schools' rosters arent 50% better than ours...the variance between best and worst rosters is probably 10-20% at most in the SEC. Having the right coach, one who develops most of his players, puts them in position to succeed with the right schemes and play calls, and who makes the right decision in close/late situations most of the time, can close that gap significantly.
That doesn't necessarily mean you're going to beat those guys consistently...most of those schools have good coaches too. But you will beat them when they have an off day occasionally. And you should consistently beat the other schools with three star rosters...the Ole Miss, Miss State, South Carolina, Missouri type schools. That should be our starting point. Get back to the point where we're the best of our tier, sustain that for a little while, then gradually build respect to the point where you can further close the talent gap.

That is a great way to look at it, especially since both of my teams are in the "possibly good but not beating the top dogs consistently" category. There are always a few teams in that tier that are 9-10 win good every year, just haven't been either of mine lately.
There is no way we should have only beaten A&M once? twice? whatever since they joined the league for example. We have been closer to the bottom feeders most of the last decade.
I don't really think ASU will beat us, but Memphis? Yeah, that's a possibility. Like practically every other team in the country now, every year is a crap shoot but they have some scalps in their belts over the years. They have an SEC inferiority complex and they will be hating and gunning for Arkansas only slightly less than ASU is. Plus, they are good offensively and if our defense struggles this year, particularly in the secondary and with the pass rush, it could be a long long day. I mean they went 11-2 last year. I know doesn't mean much this year, but still...

Memphis has been one of the better mid-majors since Justin Fuente's time there. It wouldn't surprise me if they are slight betting favorites.
That said, a loss is completely unacceptable and should elevate Sam's seat to about the same temp as most of us use to sear steaks.

A loss should see him having to walk his slightly less fat ass back to Hot Springs. He doesn't even need to go back to Fayetteville. We'll have everything shipped.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Aug 19, 2025, 08:23 AMPeople make the faulty assumption that the talent deficit between haves and have nots in the SEC is greater than it is.

Team speed, size and natural strength are immutable factors in a football game but the majority of wins and losses boil down to poor decisions and lack of preparation by players and coaching staffs that result in crucial penalties, turnovers and cheap big plays.
In his heyday, BMFP offenses excelled at attention to detail and creating mismatches that allowed them to outscore more physically gifted opponents. That is how "have-nots" win in a league dominated by "haves".
I will always be grateful to Sam for elevating the football program from the laughingstock status of the Morris debacle to a point where the program is at least respected if no longer feared; but, he was and always will be an assistant coach trying to impersonate a head coach. As long as Twill and BMFP are around, we will win some games we shouldn't but Sam will lose some winnable games, as well.

Coaching is the single most important variable in the success of a college football program.
I've said it before, but we need to emulate what DVH has done with the baseball program. When Dave got here we were in the bottom half to third of baseball programs in the SEC, in a league that is at least as competitive and difficult in that sport as it is in football. Our only out of state recruiting at the time was dipping into adjacent states, and following Norm's path of grabbing some upside guys from northern states who didn't get the exposure to be noticed by LSU, Texas, USC, etc. Dave got the absolute most out of the talent he had, and put some CWS years on the stadium wall.
Every year we got marginally better, upped our profile a little bit. Each additional winning season gave us a little more cache with recruits and built our national reputation. Now we can and do recruit coast to coast, and are considered one of the top programs nationally...even holding the dreaded title of "Best Program Without a Championship."
It's easy to say with the benefit of hindsight, and certainly debatable if what he was building would be sustainable, but this is exactly what Petrino appeared to be doing when he was head coach here, and why it was so foolish to fire him over an HR issue. After 2008 we never lost to a team with equal or inferior talent under his watch, and we grabbed a few scalps from bigger programs. He was doing the absolute best he could with the talent we could acquire, and we went from being pore lil arkiesaw to garnering some national attention and respect.

Honestly the fact that it's on the road gives me some hope.
I saw somewhere that we are the worst power five team at playing at home...don't recall the metric they used, but it was something that took into account the quality of opponent rather than just straight W/L record.
memphis lost all 11 starters on defense plus a lot of backups. only 3 returning on offense and will start a qb from the portal.
who knows how the game will go but they won't be the team that went 11-2 last season.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Aug 19, 2025, 08:16 AMFair assessment, but it's been proven over the last three years that Sam will cost his coordinators a game or two per season with either indecision or poor choices that have to be made by the head coach. The 7-17 record in one score games is a horrible look for any head coach, particularly when two of the 17 are Liberty and BYU at home, and several others are games where we had fourth quarter leads.
And that is where we differ. To me. losing close games is more indicative of lesser talent. Coach"s responsibility is to put you in a position to win games. Players more often determine the outcome. There is a reason they say "big time players make big time plays". We've had very few ppl layers in his tenure that were drafted and none in the early rounds.
Sam's biggest issue is he can't get us better talent wise. He has the coaches around him to win more games if they had better talent.

Sometimes that is the case. Others, it isn't.
Let's just look at 2022.
We lost to A&M because we missed a late FG in a situation where we shouldn't have been playing for one. We had plenty of time to score a TD, but chose to go conservative and rely on our kicker...a great one, but like all college kickers, not a sure thing.
Liberty beat us by two at home. There is no universe where their talent was even comparable to ours.
LSU scored their only touchdown on a short field, because Pittman thought the smart play was to go for it on 4th and long with a backup QB who couldn't throw. We lost by 3.
We also played for a FG from the three yard line down five versus Missouri in the 4th quarter, made it, and lost by two. Again, Missouri was not a more talented team than we were.
The next year we lost one score games at home to BYU and Miss State, the latter of which was playing a backup QB who couldn't complete a pass beyond the line of scrimmage if his life depended on it. We had significant talent advantages in each of those games.
Win half of these games and the record goes to 10-14...still not great but at least defensible. In that case your talent argument has more merit.
I don't expect Sam or anyone else to get every 50/50 call right. I do expect close to 50/50 results in one score games. If your talent is good enough to be in position to win in the fourth quarter, it is good enough to win at least half of those games.

We are a 6 win program over the last 35 years. Blame coaches/players if you wish. We are who we are. I have no reason to think the next hire will make us any better.

Trust college kickers...even the best ones...at your own peril. Why leave it in a kicker's hands (legs?) when you can take that variability out? Divide the responsibility among eleven guys rather than just one.
Pittman is far from our only problem, and maybe not even the worst (it starts higher up the food chain). But he is a relatively low hanging fruit area where we can gain marginal improvement.
If we're going to accept the fact that we're always going to be 6-6 and hoping for the Liberty Bowl, why invest anything at all?
For the record I'd happily eat crow on everything I've said about Pittman if he could somehow win eight games regular season this year against this schedule (assuming none of the losses are to non-conference foes excluding ND or to Miss State at home). This isn't a Nutt situation where I just want to see him gone. The best possible outcome would be for Sam to prove me and the rest of his detractors wrong.

This. I don't get the thought of wishing the hogs or Sam to lose so we can be done with him. I'd rather us win 6 vs 4. And if we feel 6 is underperforming, fire him. But I don't wish fewer wins to save a few bucks. At this point it's a difference of a couple million saved if he were to just tank. But if he wins 8+, there's still no reason to overreact and extend. I think this is Sam's last job as a coach, no matter what. Nobody in power 5 is going to call calling if he were fired or contract ran out.
I'd trust Little making that kick over just about every other option we had. KJ didn't give me any confidence he could make a play to win in that stadium.

Well, there is an automatic extension if we win 7 and the buyout is cut pretty drastically if he is fired at under .500 for his time here.
I mean if he wins 9 games, so be it. I won't be mad. But if he somehow gets to 7, we're fucked once again. We have reached the point where it is best for the program for him to tank so that we can get on with the process of moving on.

This is how I see it. The talent (raw ability, not performance) we have has been consistent over my entire lifetime. When we won 9-10 games per year we were getting the same caliber of recruit as we did when dipshit was going 2-10, plus or minus 1-2 guys per year. When the state has a banner crop we might do marginally better. Short of finding the DVH for football we'll never be what UGA or Alabama have been, or what we were under JFB/Holtz/Hatfield in a lesser league. Changing the coach is the only variable we can realistically control.
My issue with that is you're likely not going to get a great coach to take this job. It isn't attractive. Especially if a boost in NIL money doesn't come with it.

Not all great coaches started out as known commodities. The only ones we've ever hired who weren't up and comers were Holtz, Ford, Petrino, and Bielema. And a guy with personality and reason for optimism would draw an NIL boost, at least initially. It would be on him to sustain it, and on us to retain him.

Extending for 7 wins at this point in a contract, is ludicrous. I realize that's just the dumbass contract but that Hunters dumbassery to take on. I had forgot about that.
But anyhow, I thought the buyout was reduced to 50% from 75% if he falls under. .500? I guess my idiot math was thinking maybe he's owed around 10 mil or so after this year, and payment either owed 5 mil or 7.5 mil. Not that 2.5 mil isn't a lot of money, but in perspective of cfb it's not really.

Not really. I just don't like doing the same thing with the same guy over and over thinking it's magically going to get better. When the coach you have proves over a decent sample size he's not getting the results you want, I'm the type that would rather risk the next guy being the same or worse on the off chance that he also might be better.

This is why I don't think he is gone even with a 4-8 or even a 3-9 record. The volatility of college sports especially football right now is keeping the PTB from pulling the trigger on Yurachek or Pittman.
They are waiting for a more clear picture of what will come with NIL, the transfer portal, and league add/sub. No point in getting rid of them now, if the landscape is ever changing.
My bet is that in the next 5 to 10 years we will see college football go to a premier league with the possibility of teams dissociating with colleges except in name only.

Petrino
Nutt
Pittman
Bert
Ford
Smith
Crow/Kines
Morris

I'd probably have Ford ahead of Pittman and Bert. He couldn't motivate for shit but was obviously a very good recruiter/evaluator/developer and knew what we needed to win in the SEC. Nuttsac was the benefactor. But overall I agree with your sentiment.

Bert might have actually done something if he'd just stayed out of the Tito's.
Hell, I felt pretty good about us after the Texas bowl.
The grandson of Lloyd Carr will be ND's starting qb. I'm sure won't have a Heisman performance against us or anything.

To me, Ford was as meh as Pittman but in a far less SEC. Plus he didn't know we scored a TD. That alone knocked him down a notch.

There isn't a conflict between thinking we win 9 this year and thinking it will most likely be an anomaly.
But by all means, keep thinking Memphis and State have great odds on beating the Hogs.

I looked up Lawrence and didn't realize he was born in Little Rock...not sure where he went to high school but I've never heard anything about him having a Arkansas connection. Ok according to wiki he moved to California at an early age, was in and out of foster homes. After the nfl he graduated to prison, eventually murdered (allegedly) a cousin of former NFL wide wr R. Jay Soward who was his cell bunk buddy and was in solitary confinement where he decided to hang himself. I knew he died but didn't know the circumstances.

DJ Ukelele had to ruin three teams and leave college football before the media glazing stopped. Klubnik is in the same camp, just with better stats. Just got a call from my daughter who has sequestered herself in the Kappa house basement, active shooter in the library at UA.
That's a lot of juniors and seniors. Maybe the most we've had in the two deep since 2020.
We have a nickel back named Shakur Smalls. He's going to get shot by both the east and west coast crews.

What's the deal w/ Grayson Wilson? Over-hyped or is he getting the TeSlaa treatment?
maybe he's just a freshman and needs to learn?

A Cabot baptist one.
There's a church up in this area where the pastor was caught fucking a 17 year old girl and having her suck the demon out of him once or twice a day for god only knows how long. Cute girl. After he was caught the congregation begged him to stay and blamed the girl for being a little whore. He ended up moving to another church in Hot Springs.

The smart bet seems to be the under on our season total of 5.5 wins.
I look at the depth chart and have zero clue what to think. Our portal class doesn't inspire a ton of confidence, and once again we're bad on the backend and paper thin on defense.
Anything on either side of 3-9 and 7-5 would surprise me.
I think we go 1-7 after the Memphis game and wind up at 4-8. Yurachek bolts midseason for another job.
