Crap. After the first possession of the second half we're gonna be down by two scores and won't be able to catch up.
God damn where is the holding call
It's almost like the defense is tanking on purpose. How can they be this bad at tackling or even making stops?

I fully expect Pittman to call an onside kick to start the half, and it will go disastrously.
We have committed 6 penalties for 60 yards.
Ole Miss has committed no penalties.

This is on Sam. Except for last year every damn game we've played them with Sam has been this way. Kiffen always goes for it. You know field goals aren't going to win it and you have to score touchdowns...and he pusses out and goes for a long field goal on the first possession.

we actually have more yards than they do and have held them to 66 yards rushing. 634 total yards in the 1st half.
Field goals will not cut it with our defense.
One qb can't hold the ball, the other can't walk and they still light up our defense.
We have only had 1 negative play against their offense. Mitchell with the shoestring for a 2 yard loss.
We are losing because Sam, once again, has no feel for the game kicking that 51 yard FG on 4th and 1.
Every instinct he has is wrong. It's why we lose so many close games.
Travis Williams needs to apologize to the entire team and ask Bobby what to do. Not that he could do it. How do you have a defense that is this bad? I understand guys not being good enough, but completely lost?

Defensive holding and still give up a big first down run
Defensive holding shocking

This defense is ridiculous.

Wait a second. The QB is 10 yards down the field and they call defensive holding on...air.

How is that defensive holding added to the end of the run? We're winging it.

Go all Kevin Kelley on their ass.
Yes it really doesn't make a difference whether we start them at the 20 or the 50.
Rule 9-3-6: Defensive Holding
"Defensive players may not use their hands and arms to hook, lock, clamp, grasp, encircle or hold in an effort to restrain an opponent other than the runner."
Approved Ruling 9-3-6-I:
"Defensive back holds an eligible receiver beyond the neutral zone during a legal forward pass play: Foul, 10 yards and automatic first down."
Legal forward pass play, meaning the QB has to be behind the line of scrimmage. Either the flag got hung up on the ref's belt or it was definitely thrown well after he crossed the line.

My criticism of Bobby for this game was running straight ahead (no zone read) on first down so much in the second half. Starting 2nd and 9-10 killed a couple of drives.
I don't fault Sam so much for this one score loss. The only really questionable decision was trying the FG on the first possession. He clearly didn't see what was coming with the defense. Had he made the same call on 4th and 2 at any point after the first drive, I'd have my pitchfork out with the rest of you.
We did pretty well to have a chance at the end given how poorly the defense played along with the fact that the officials were worth about 14 points in OM's favor.

What is Sam's record in one score games? It has to be fucking horrible. When games are that close, it isn't purely a talent issue. Talent issues are when you get nuked by teams that are just better with way better players. Ole Miss doesn't have better players across the board and they aren't better, except better coached in every phase of the game except maybe the Offense. Our offense is better than theirs, even though theirs put up big numbers, it is deceiving because it was against our Defense...

In Oxford in 2021 neither defense could piss a drop and they beat us 52-51 when our offense couldn't convert at the end (failed 2 pt conversion). I went to that one.
You live long enough you start to see the same things again and again. Even with the same coaches.

Statement: As bad as the defense was, the offense lost the game.
Was watching with a big crowd, so I couldn't be my normal skeptical self. Texting with a buddy who was there when we held them to the 13 point deficit.
"These people don't realize we're going to get close but lose in a heart breaking way."
My buddy - Yep
So we score to cut it to 6.
Me - "We're going to stop them here" and we did.
Buddy - Green will throw an interception
Me - We'll get close first.
So, was wrong on the way we lost but right on the heartbreak. If we had scored, they would have scored on a blocked PAT. Why, because we're cursed.

I don't fault Sam so much for this one score loss. The only really questionable decision was trying the FG on the first possession. He clearly didn't see what was coming with the defense. He lives and breathes Ole Miss. If they can't win or improve, it bothers him. He takes it personally.
He's excellent at getting their donors to step up. He negotiated Kiffin the smart way and made Yurachek look stupid. But to have that many one score games over the last 14 seasons is crazy, and even crazier that we've lost so many of them.
I'd agree with that. We are not a desirable program from a football stand point. Over a decade of mediocrity to bad results. A lack of instate talent being produced. From what has been mentioned online (no one knows actual numbers), not competing with the top schools in NIL. We used to could sell TX kids on coming to play in the SEC, now that's gone.

No because if he gets to 2-7, that would trigger a lower buyout and save somewhere between 3 and 5 million dollars. He might be allowed to finish out to 2-10, but it would make zero financial sense.
But that's not going to happen. We showed last night that we can lukewarm our way to somewhere between 5 and 7 wins, and 7 automatically adds another year to his contract.

We ran the ball 37 times for 221 yards, which is 6.0 yards a carry. Mike Washington had big holes on his two TD runs. MW avg 5.0 yards per carry.
Russell was a better runner than Washington from what I saw and most of the runs were off the tackle. Take out Green's runs and what did we average?
Green didn't stay in the pocket much, which was why he didn't get sacked.
A better defense is going to have a field day with our O-Line.

Quote from: HOGSRUNWILD on Sep 14, 2025, 07:54 AMSam Pittman is 7-18 in One score games in his time at Arkansas. That doesn't point to a huge talent gap issue. That is coaching and mindset. Loser mindset. Grasping defeat from the jaws of victory.
And that 7 includes some games where we turned a blowout into a coin flip win (ex. the 2022 Liberty Bowl, Cincinnati, etc).
This is where I disagree with most people. I believe coaches have the responsibility to put players in a position to win games. If that happens, the players determine the outcome.
Quote from: Son of Spam on Sep 14, 2025, 11:28 AMLooking at our schedule, what games are you saying we can win?
I predicted before the season we'd be 3-1 after Memphis and then go 1-7 the rest of the way (catching someone like Auburn or State) to finish 4–8. Basically a redux of the 2023 season.
After last night I think I'll revise that to 2-6 down the stretch. Our offense can put up points and chunk plays, but our defense is *really* bad. It's been a long time since I've seen a QB carve up our defense like Chambliss did last night.
I'm not sure if it's talent or scheme but we had a lot of guys playing out of position last night (and have all season), and we can't tackle worth a shit.

The end Georgia Tech-Clemson game was a master class in coaching.
Key had the entire ST unit standing beside him ready to run out into the field and kick a quick FG. The broadcast crew said he'd spent a not-insignificant amount of time in practice working on that situation, which isn't even one that occurs often.

If we're having this debate again, it's also the responsibility of the coaches to make sure the players have been trained to secure the ball in those situations. Maybe that doesn't happen consistently enough with those teams that are frequently on the wrong end of such outcomes.
In the past, our DBs would be in fairly decent position, but never look back for the ball which would have been an interception. Last night, I don't know where they were. I don't think I have ever seen so many wide open receivers, especially in the end zone. And we let 2 injured QBs beat us. I think the OM defense may be the worse we will see this year. So, the future doesn't look good. And, there will be much better offenses.
i doubt we see too many much better offenses.

Offense looks like what I expected. Defense looks far worse. I think our offense can be in positions to score 27+ against the rest of our schedule. Yes I am a homer there. I also think our defense can find new and creative ways to give up 30+ each game.
I know we had to be missing some guys on defense. Surely....right?
Right?
There's no excuse in the NIL age for a coach in his 6th season making over 6 million a year and a DC in his 3rd season making over 1 mill a year to put that kind of a defense out on the field last night. Bobby Petrino needs to be running the show the rest of the year.
The first signs of distress were
A. Last week of fall camp we moved a OL (that can't barely move) to DL for "depth" because all the sudden he's really more athletic than he looks. Okay.
B. First game against an FCS our db's were laying off giving them 15 yard cushions like we had to contend with Jerry Rice on one side and Randy Moss on the other with Larry Fitzgerald taking over the slot.
C. Now comes the hallmark of Razorback football. We've managed to make a D2 QB look like the SEC offensive player of the week. He might just get it.
I think the problem with the defense last night was TWill decided "backup QB = blitz" and Kiffin schemed his WRs to get open with slants and gos and it worked like a charm. Our blitzers were slow. The QB was on point.
The problem was we never adjusted until the very end of the game.

Good point. They'd be in great position, but just wouldn't turn around and look for the ball. Now they are not even in the same frame.
Do we even have many PI penalties this year? It's hard to have pass interference when you're five feet from the guy.

True...
When you have dudes that just can't keep up and get beat in man because they just aren't fast enough of get pushed around because they aren't big enough, that is a talent issue. That isn't really happening to us.
When you have dudes that have no idea where to go and who to cover, that is a coaching issue or the player is simply mentally retarded. I assume the players aren't mentally retarded so, that is a coaching issue. We aren't spending enough time on film and practice to recognize what is happening in real time and reacting to it instinctively as second nature. We are completely and totally lost. It isn't even lost in "space". We have 4 dudes in the endzone and they ran 1 dude across their face and not one person picked him up. He ran past the last man, who let him go, and he had about 1/4 of the endzone all to himself. The last man never even contemplated picking him up, knowing full well that nobody else was out there.
You can train some REALLY dumb dudes to react to pretty complex situations as second nature with enough drills and repetition. I was an officer in the Navy and trained a LOT of really, REALLY dumb dudes. I mean, REALLY dumb dudes. You train and drill until it isn't thinking, it is second nature. Second nature is FAST, thinking and figuring out is based on intelligence and is slow. Training and drilling is hard fucking work and I think at least part of our staff isn't cut out for the hard work that is required to cut it in the SEC. This isn't a 9-5 job or even a 10 hour a day job. You need to eat, sleep, live it and demand everyone around you do the same. We likely have one dude on staff with that mentality and I'm not even sure he has that fully now, but you know it is still there inside.
Agreed. The template for Arkansas success was made by Wilson Mathews and JFB decades ago. 1. Recruit smart but coachable players (Jimmy Johnson and Loyd Philips being prototypes). 2. Speed to the ball overcomes size. 3. Stamina. JFB knew if you're in shape, you're going to have them by the balls in the 4th quarter. 4. Hard work. Endless highly coached drill and scrimmage make defensive play instructive. 5. Team. Individual mistakes cost the team. Know your job and work together in all things. We are slow, but also make terrible angles in pursuit. No stamina. This team going back to Bert has been out of shape and lazy. No hard work by coaches or these pro players. So what of that do we have today. Players make the same dumb mistakes game after game. They aren't really coached under Sam. They are slow. They showed they were out of shape against ole miss. Coaches nor players work hard like is required in the sec. They don't play as a team.

Yes I started reading that and it looked like at this point the guy could just make a template and change a few details and send it. We are predictably bad on defense and special teams. We know Taylen is going to gift somebody a turnover opportunity a couple times a game or get wild with his mechanics. We know because
Arkansas someone will do something at a critical time and not in a good way.
I don't read them anymore because by now I think it is a template with updated numbers each week. Nothing to say about our team really changes because the team hasn't changed. Did he ask why we tried the same defensive scheme against Ole Miss that got our shit pushed in against them last year? Or why we insist on playing press man coverage despite a glaring lack of speed or ability?

I still think the run blocking sucks and the long run by Washington was successful partly because the Ole Miss defense was not set before the snap.

I don't get what he is saying at all. The vast majority of our games are not lost because of talent. It is becaue of bad coaching decisons and just downright shitty luck. The ball literally doesn't bounce our way.
My counter arguement would be if we started winning games like the Ole Miss game Saturday, then we would organically elevate our recruiting becasue kids want to play for teams that win 9 and 10 games each year. No one gets excited about playing for a 5 or 6 win team.
Plus, it's just a stupid argument. Competitive in the SEC means you are competitive in the playoff race. Unless, of course, he literally thinks it is an acceptable to merely not be blown out in most of our SEC games.

People need to at least see a path towards their donations accomplishing something. With Pittman's track record it would appear that the money they gave would be effectively thrown into a pile and set on fire.

Our defense played with the confidence of a preacher's 40 year old virgin son in a whore house. If we played Ole Miss 10 times this season we might win 5 of them strictly because of offense. That's all last game told me.
I don't know if I should be disappointed or impressed but somehow Lane Kiffin seems to get everyone all excited only to flub out toward the end of the season. Somehow Sam's teams tend to surprise in games they shouldn't and disappoint in games they shouldn't. So maybe we get bowl eligible again this season but I wouldn't go expecting anything more that that. Offense is pretty decent but hasn't really played a good defense yet to really see how things are going to be. This offense is good enough to win games in the SEC. The defense and special teams will lose most of them.

For starters, the Arkansas D played much better in the second half and had we scored I feel fairly confident we would have prevented them from getting into field goal range. Regardless, the game was very much winable and should have been won.
Second, Ole Miss receives praise on this board for how much better they do than Arkansas at the NIL game. Arkansas is knocked for not having SEC talent because of the lack of NIL. Yet, you just said that if the two teams play 10 times Arkasnas would win half of them.
Is it your opinion that Ole Miss also does not have SEC talent? Would you say that Arkansas being on equal footing means that Ole Miss' NIL program sucks too?

Both teams scoring slowed down in the 2nd half. Supposedly our last defense before the fumble we went to a zone scheme for the first time and it shut them down. So it stands to reason that might have played out again. Instead we fumble while driving after Ole Miss had a fake injury where undoubtedly their staff told them to strip it out. They did and then they pick up a couple first downs and it's ballgame. Excellent coaching...vs Meh coaching.
RE: Ole Miss being a better program. Are we under-performing or are they? if you believe our AD we're way behind in NIL. The optics are that they are that much better than us but really I don't know that they are. Head to head we generally are right there with them...with a critical mistake being a major game deciding factor. Spolier alert...that's basically any game especially conference ones. I think they stink holed us last season but you'll have that. It's a true rival game so if anything I guess you could make the argument that regardless of talent we're (to some degree) gonna bring it.
Some would argue you could give Sam....Georgia talent and he'd still find a way to go 8-4 because that's just who he is. I don't think anyone is debating that point. We know Sam is not the brightest tack in the box. He's made mistakes in the past and he's still making mistakes from an instinctive point of view. Like a lot of coaches they are still treating games like it's all about field position and taking points when you feel like they are there to be had. Sam didn't kick that first fg because he was scared to go for it on 4th. He kicked it wanting to show off his kicker's big leg in a game in which fg's probably weren't going to matter *unless you miss a couple two or three. You don't bring a knife to a gun fight. You don't put your freshman kicker on the road for the first time in that situation shattering his confidence. It's those lack of instincts is what will always kill us with Sam Pittman. The guy has zero ability to read the room.
Won't happen

I think losing to Memphis would be a nice time to see what a Bobby Petrino can do for you as head coach the rest of the season.
Quote from: piglosopher on Sep 16, 2025, 09:54 AMAnd the only hope we can aspire to have a decent season is because of Bobby Petrino, if that isn't obvious by now.
Always has been. :suicide:
Don't doubt there is big money holding back waiting for a different coach, but seems the transients overtaking NWA are a bit exaggerated. Plenty of them came elsewhere from the state. I don't know the statistics and demographics, just vibe and feel which I'm sure is never wrong. However it's an awfully convenient excuse for why we've dropped the ball on NIL from day one.
