His second stint at UL ended in failure but maybe he was always destined to go out on top here instead of there.

Not many coaches can say they coached multiple schools multiple times. A rare feat.

Fire t-will today. A high school kid that plays Madden can call better defenses, surely one of the other defensive coaches can do it.

Also, he needs a coach kilmer "was it fun" speech.

It's all who gives a shit these dumb motherfuckers paid me until people start getting fired because you suck that bad.

Not a player on that defense should get a combine invite.

The next Lawrence Taylor could come out of this group but I wouldn't draft him based on what he did in college this season. Quit is an internal rot that you can not cut out.

I remember when nobville was all convinced the BOT was meeting with Gruden at Powerhouse, after closing hours, to sign the contract... all while Nutt was still employed.

First, let me be classy.  It's sad for Sam.  He wasn't supposed to be a power 5 head coach, ever.  Oh sure, the money, cry me a river, etc.

But I don't hate him, I have met him, and he's a good man who was over his head, and that's on our program.

He did remarkably well considering, but he went downhill after losing Briles and Odom, and super seniors who loved the helmet.

What we need is a culture change.  Sam wore out and lost his desire.  We need a hard ass approach on perfection.

BMFP is the guy who's historically done that, although I'm not against hiring someone else and turning the page.

We can do, and have done,  a lot worse than BMFP.  If they pass on BMFP and hire another loser like the last 3, everyone's job is gone.  There will be pitchforks.

Yurachek and the board almost have to exorcize the demon, they're in a much worse place this time around.

BP never got much of an opportunity to coach in the NIL era.  We all know he's a tremendous on the field coach so why did he ultimately fail and both Louisville and Mo State?  Recruiting?

It was nice seeing our helmet on the desk nearly every week on Gameday. However, Bama and LSU were having one of the best seasons ever. And, as usual, we still had to play both of them. Good times.

Mo State I don't think he was there long enough to really say that he "failed" he was a little lacking on being "good" there. That was right when things in recruiting were changing faster than a lot of small budget teams could keep up. Traditional recruiting went out the window.

At Louisville Part Deux I think he got caught with a horrendous defense and a couple QBs after Jackson that just didn't pan out. There may be more to it than that...I wasn't really paying that close attention by that point. Obviously recruiting was the issue there.

Shit has changed so much in recruiting it's hard to say if Petrino with a really competitive NIL budget could do well but I'd suspect he'd be much better than Titts McGee.

Bobby needs 4 of the last 7.

Auburn and Miss St are the most winnable. The former seems set for a total collapse. The latter is better than we'd like to admit.

After that, there's the usual close game vs LSU, a Texas team with a QB that shouldn't scare anyone, and Mizzou at home.

Tennessee and Aggies are tough this year, but no one in the conference is unbeatable.

If we can get any hint of fire and a modicum of football IQ out of our defense, the mountain is not insurmountable.

Are you still drunk?  While I can see your point with each team... I think the glass bottom clouded your view on our D.  Even Texass will embarrass this D, which means LSU, MSST, TN, MIZZ will all dunk all over 'em.  I'll be impressed if Petrino can even shift the culture a little.  I doubt he can do much else at this point in the season.  If he can shift the culture, that means the kids are buying in, and that will speak volumes to Petrino's ability to coach.

No shit. Our defense, or lack thereof, is horrible. We could score 60 points a game and still lose by 14. The rest of our schedule will score on every possession. And they won't even have to run hard to do it.

His second stint at UL was marred by his good friend the AD getting shit-canned by the whole basketball fiasco and the athletic department as a whole being in shambles at the time if I remember.  It was a pretty big thing.

So the guy on Tardville who called this exactly on Monday says that if Petrino wins 2 SEC games it's his job.  But he says today that there might be a little bit of hedging on that because option number 2 is much more likely than it looked like...whatever that means.

He also says, and goodness I hope this is true, that the Memphis game pissed off some of the deeeeep pockets and since you can buy a team now, they have decided "Why not us?".  Allegedly the motivation is that they are getting old and tired of waiting.

I know it's Tardville but he claimed this a week ago and all the usual guys who claim to know shit made fun of him.

petrino's going to have to win more than two games. doubtful the same number of wins as pittman will get him the job.

for better or worse, lashlee seems to be the front runner. when the national guys start throwing out his name, and jerry's, there's something to it.

They don't have any intention of hiring Petrino for the full time job.  HY had to name him as a candidate.  What else is he going to say?  Coach Petrino will be our interim but has no shot at the real thing?  Would that inspire good coaching?

Bobby has to win 4 more (getting us to a bowl) to get the gig, imo. Even then, if they have some "Calipari by way of Tyson" level hire waiting in the wings, that'll be it.

I suppose Bobby could stay as OC if the big hire is a defensive minded guy, which I'm in favor of.

*Also this whole rumor about the big wigs being "pissed off" and "ready to do what it takes" LOL. Whatever. I'll believe it when I see it. All we're doing is getting another chicken ready to be served up with a dose of disappoint in 6 years.

You're probably right.  Kind of feels like the obligatory give him a chance kind of thing, knowing full well there's little he can do to right the ship mid season.  Then they can pick someone else while shutting up the fans who would otherwise be hounding for Petrino, by saying he just couldn't get it done.

I predict you'll see a different Bobby Petrino.  He won't have Sam overriding his decisions now.  Decisions that he wouldn't have made.

I think a lot of people are underestimating the difference between a head coach and a coordinator.

He has a shot.  He's back on top, and it's everything he's ever wanted.

I bet we see some improvement.  How much I don't know.  I mean we should have beaten Ole Miss at Oxford.  Ole Miss is going to he ranked in the top ten and undefeated.  We're bad but the difference between being awful and a decent team isn't as far as some on here seem to think.

We could easily be 4-1 with our only loss to a team that played for the NC last year.

And if Petrino had been our HC, that is exactly where we would be.

This is where I am.

A proper coach beats Memphis and Ole Miss. We may or may not have lost to ND, I dont know, but I know what it looks like when a team gives up on a coach, and that was yesterday. Once you give up, losing big is how it goes, no matter the opponent.

If we go into the Notre Dame game 4-0, we're ranked number 15 or so, at home, and full of players who think they have a future.

The team gave up on Sam, offense and defense. Everyone. If Bobby can win them back we can surprise some folks. If not (if they figure they're just going to portal out anyway) then there's nothing that can be done.

They straight up laid down and rolled over on national TV against Notre fricking Dame on their own field.
I dont know if they have the fortitude to turn it around. Quitters quit. It's hard to get somebody to not be a quitter.

Also the timing of yurchecks comments didn't help just shortly after a tough loss to ole miss on the road. I do think there was a little more quit after that. But I too believe they will get a little re-energized after the firing and maybe pull off an upset. I'd say maybe a$m could be that game but idk. Might not be the year, but I'm sure bobby would love to get that one, especially.

I dont know if they have the fortitude to turn it around. Quitters quit. It's hard to get somebody to not be a quitter.

If it's me I'm calling a team meeting and reminding these fuckers that they're costing themselves cash by putting that weak ass loafing shit on film.   Hell they might not be here and the coaches might not be here next year but every game they have an opportunity to put good shit on film which will get them paid here or somewhere else next year.   If they're gonna loaf I'm gonna go down the roster till I find someone interesting in putting in effort.  Will gladly let them put good tape out and go get paid

If Petrino wins some games, he will be the coach.  I know he has money backing him.  That's why he got the majority of the NIL spend this year.

The power that brought him here did so to give him this shot.  That's what the infighting was about I'd guarantee.  But you either have money behind you, or your toast now.
Williams and the other coaches wives knew they were being left behind IMO.

I laugh when people say Bobby can't be the head coach based on some rule.  That's not the way it is anymore.

However,  we might have another person who gets even more money.  The game yesterday got a lot of attention.  Looking at it now, it was the best thing that ever happened to our program.

Of all the names rumored, it won't be those.  It will be Bobby or another Cal type hire.

I do wonder if Green or everyone for that matter, will have a shorter leash with Petrino calling the shots. I don't know if Sam was calling some of those personnel decisions or not based on spend, but wouldn't surprise me.

Hell, we found several decent players show up in the bowl game last year, so it wouldn't be too far fetched to think we have some guys down the bench that are looking to boost their status and play hard to earn a little more cash next year. Maybe we can get a little more out of them than one game before they portal.

Nope, he said we didn't have the money to fire Sam.  It's either going to be Petrino or a pretty big hire.

I could give Lashlee a chance, depending on how the rest of the season goes and the staff he brings.  Right now he's 2-2, and if we bring in a coach from SMU after a .500 season I will nope right the fuck out of Arkansas football.

I'm just saying there is a lot of money support for Bobby in the state.  That's why he's here.  That's why Taylen Green is here.  Bobby gets what he wants, and will continue to get it, hell he just did.

He is getting his shot.  Our program isn't about Hunter Yurachek.  Or even the BOT.  Our program, and all programs now, are big boy playgrounds.  It doesn't matter about the Razorback Foundation either.  That's for the "poors" these days.

The only one I don't want, and we all agree, is Jerry calling shots.  No Lashlee.  It should be interesting to see who wins in the end. Won't be Tyson this time, but it will be a BIG hire.

We got Bobby in the first place, we followed up with a national name in Bielema (also a big hire) before the wheels came off.  The real story is what happened in 2018-2025?

We are a big job, whether these idiots who tell us it isn't say so or not, when our real money want it to be.  Cal proved that, and I don't know anything else, but I'm saying we're going to go all in.

My opinion, could be wrong, but it isn't.  We AT LEAST get Bobby.  That's huge in itself.

The only thing Cal proves is that we are, indeed, a basketball school (and this was after Musselman re-established that after 20 years in the basketball wilderness).

There is no reason to believe that this translates to football or can be replicated in a football hire. We're not even 7th in potential in the SEC any more. Double that.

"Florida fired Dan Mullen as head coach after the team's 5-6 record in the 2021 season, which was a disappointment after a strong 2020 season. Key factors for the firing included inconsistent quarterback play, a struggle with recruiting, a stubborn refusal to fire assistant coaches like defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, and Mullen's abrasive personality and lack of connection with boosters and fans."

Probably two good points and it's all speculation anyways. I'm sure Pittman did actually ask Bobby to come, just like cheeks "hired" cal,  but I doubt it was his idea to hire him. If not solely for the reason of why and how he'd gotten fired from here. He probably wouldn't have thought it was even an option but it was strongly suggested to him, in his best interest, whether he liked it or not.

I don't know or care whose idea it was, but impressed me that Sam was willing to do it.  Either it was a ballsy move or he was closer to getting the axe after that year than we thought and had no leverage at all.

Imagine being TWill on Sunday and you learn that your boss was fired.

The next morning you arrive at work to a note saying "please see the head football coach immediately when you arrive."

Then you make the walk over to the head coach's office, go in, and Petrino is sitting behind the desk.

That's nightmare stuff.

Three defensive coaches is a Wipeout.

I'm not complaining but I seriously hope someone is prepared to throw money around to bring in a bunch of temporary replacements.

Maybe throw a bunch of money of Muschamp. He's not coaching this season and might be DC for a year if the price is right.

All 3 needed to go.

It was obvious to anyone who knows the slightest bit about football that our defensive issues aren't just due to talent. There are glaring issues with coaching and scheme. Players playing out of position, play calls late coming in, bad angles, bad coverage schemes, ill-timed blitzes, and some of the worst tackling I've ever seen (which, along with the fumble issues, tells me we're not practicing hard or hitting in practice).

The defensive line got pushed around by Memphis and couldn't rush the passer to save their lives, and secondary was hilariously bad.

Imagine going from a guy that everyone was promoting as the next head coach somewhere to a guy hitting the unemployment line.  Rough.

Williams was on the Falcons when Bobby was there. It's hard to imagine there wasn't some residual tension when they ended up on the same staff.

My biggest worry is that the defensive players continue to lay down and quit as a protest to losing their buddy DC to the big mean OC

What is Charlie Strong doing these days...I don't imagine there's much of a relationship between BMFP and him though. I won't be shocked if it's a Bobby Allen type coming in. Just a few older guys that love that helmet would be better than the slugs we have now.

Then they won't be playing, most likely.  The Second/Third stringers will be playing until they find someone willing to put out effort, even if they player isn't as good.  The loafer can loaf on the bench.

Posted in another thread, but the father of the FHS QB, who happens to be highly recruited for the 2027 class, is currently in an off-field defensive staff role.  Expect him to get promoted.

If he's healthy enough and available I'd expect Steve Caldwell to come back and work with the DL now that Deke is gone.  Too bad Hurtt isn't around to give us inside scoop on that - Caldwell is his cousin, I think.

The son isn't committed...at least not publicly yet...but he is pretty highly recruited.  Lane Kiffin has already offered him.

Another possibility with BMFP ties...Todd Grantham, who was his DC at Louisville the second time around, just got shitcanned yesterday at Okie State.  I've never been a huge fan of his, but he's a known hardass that might be able to clean up some sloppiness.  If nothing else, we'll have to have bodies in those roles.  I'm sure the pool of competent coaches sitting around doing nothing in early October is pretty small.

I wouldn't read too much into these reactions.  A couple of buddy-buddy type coaches just got fired.  Of course the players from whom they didn't demand enough hard work are going to be pissed.

If some of them quit, so fucking what?  The eleven least athletic guys on this board could strap on the pads and allow the other team to score a TD on every possession where they were actively trying.

Previous generations didn't like it, but they didn't have the transfer portal to up and leave whenever they wanted and play immediately at another school.  I think most coaches are scared of the players now because of the portal.  They are scared of the players leaving if they (coaches) are too hard on them.  I've seen it first hand.

I think that's painting with too broad of a brush.

Sure, a lot of them are entitled twats who won't allow anyone to raise their voices at them.  But there are plenty of kids out there who will accept hard coaching, provided the benefit of winning or getting a chance at the pros seems realistic.

Then why do it?  I mean, if BP doesn't think he really has a shot to be the next HC why make those firings.  Just ride out the eyar and everyone moves on.  He has to feel like he has a real shot for this to turn permanent.  These moves signal he is planning for the future.

I wasn't commenting on Petrino, really.  More responding to your statement regarding other interims not canning coordinators and coaches.  They may have that power, they may not have.  I don't know.  Just saying that they may have had it and simply didn't use it for the reasons I stated.

You may be right in how Petrino is thinking right now.  He very well could be taking this as a serious shot and planning for the future.  Or, to play devil's advocate here, he may not like Twill and crew and simply figures an untrained monkey can do better so got rid of him.  There may also be something to the rumors about in fighting between them... and he said fuck you you're out because he doesn't want opposition from his coordinators.  Could be as simple as he figures it's the only way to get the D off their asses and actually playing.  Might have nothing to do with the future but the right here and now.  No idea.

What we do know is, Bobby is showing he still has some "motherfucker" left in him... and we can hope that translates to a culture shift.

No.

In fact, I think the literal opposite is what is true right now.

Lashley would love the job, but big money guys think they can steal a big name and view Lashley as a fallback.

100% on the bolded part.  I hope BP turns things around this year. BMFP was a glourious thing.

The BMFP days were the best.  We always had hope in every game.  The games were fun to watch and winning felt so damned good... and we had a winner's culture.  I, like everyone here, yearn for more of those days.  So I'm hoping like hell we see some real BMFP, even if it is only for the rest of this year.

In my opinion, Pittman was fired after Memphis. With a national game coming, guess the brass thought he would go out with a bang instead of a whimper. Yeah...

 Everything felt different Saturday.

I think it's more like he knew the writing was on the wall, but if we somehow came out and beat Notre Dame, whatever talk of firing him mid-season would have ended and he would have been given the chance to turn it around this year.

Instead, because he was lazy and uninspiring, the team gave up on him after Memphis, and we basically slept-walked our way to a blowout loss vs ND.

Somebody on Nobville just posted this about the team meeting.  God I hope this is true.

QuoteParaphrasing from someone who said they were there:

You aren't just college kids anymore. You are making good money and some more than the coaches. You are going to earn it.

This is your job and you will be expected to earn your money.

Some of you may not like it but you will have bosses in life you don't like but they earned the right to be boss like I have to coach. If you want to talk about my history here today my door is open. After today it will never be discussed again.

I'm a winner and I expect to win and go to a bowl. I want this job and if you aren't ready to work you will be replaced.

We have a second chance on season. I expect to get better and I am going to ride your asses. Some of you haven't bought in this year and I am aware of you. This ends now.

I'm bringing in some coaches that will ride you hard. Expect it. This is a tremendous university and I know I can win here and expect everyone in this room to get on board and earn my respect.

We will win and make this special state proud again and feared to be on other programs  schedule.

It starts now.

This isn't the first time we've had "coaching issues in the locker room"....it's almost like the head coach didn't command anyone's respect. Also wasn't the S&C coach's wife really vocal shortly after dude getting the job here...like there was bad blood almost immediately. The last S&C guy was the "issue" from what I could figure out...I'm betting the real issue is nobody up there wants to "work".

Hunter saying he doesn't expect Bobby to win out, and just wants to see us be competitive again.

That's obviously a diplomatic response. I think it's clear that Bobby has no chance of retention if we don't at least win a couple SEC games, probably three. Five wins (in total) MIGHT keep him here. Six probably means he stays. More than that and it's basically a guarantee.

From all of Hunter's comments, reading between the lines, it sounds like we were totally caught flat-footed with the change of the sport (NIL, etc), and we tried to put things together on they and hope Sam worked out. Now that he hasn't, we're hitting the reset button and starting with a whole new mentality for approaching the portal and player payments, etc.

Quote from: BleedinRed on Sep 29, 2025, 12:29 PMI somewhat diagree.  I think HY, like the fans, are looking for effort going foward.  The season is lost.  It just is.  And there are significant issues with what the previous coaches have done.  That is clear.  I think HY is going to evaluate BP on his ability to right the ship going foward.

Maybe, I just think the politics of it all means Bobby needs to prove "Bobby's back." It's hard to imagine us losing a bunch of close games anymore. Either the team will buy in and we'll win the games like we almost did vs Ole Miss, or the team will give up on him, in which case I don't think Bobby will be able to convince the big money guys to give him a fresh start. I think the big money guys want a Cal-type splash hire but are fine with sticking with Bobby if he wins. If he doesn't win, no matter the circumstances, I don't think he stays.

not just the politics.

yurachek made it very clear they will reach out to other guys, like now. they won't spend the money and time, or extend the offers like yurachek said they would, if they have their guy already.

i'd be perfectly happy with the guy. but to think that, despite how hard they play, getting 50 put on us by the vols and aggie isn't going to matter, doesn't make sense to me.

To be fair, there isn't head coach alive that could be put into the head coaching positon that could prevent 50 by the vols and aggies.  BP has nothing to do with the roster and scheme for this year.  I think HY understands that.

There was one play Saturday...may have been the last TD before halftime...where we had three guys in perfect position surrounding the ND pass receiver.  The only way out was to go backwards or run through three guys.  Yet somehow he made it through them without being touched, and went on to score on a breakaway.

You could pick any three of us, place us in that exact same spot, and I think we could've tackled the ball carrier.  We almost had to go out of our way to let him out.

they still get their scholly for that academic term if they hit the portal.

the nil stuff is specific to the deal the player signs for and since it's not 'supposed' to be tied to performance on the field, and typically ends at the end of the year, they'll get that too.

that's why players enter the portal but wait until after the end of the year to actually transfer so they would still get the nil money.

I made one post about it when they hired him at oc and one post about it when they promoted him yesterday. I'm still pissed about it over a decade later, but that's not going to change the past. I fear that Bob gets the nod and never comes close to the past glory and all of the cocksukers who made it happen and said there was no other choice will be lined up to say I told you so. I think BP has this in his mind as well. That's motivation for a 60 year old. He has one last chance to prove he belongs. He has an opportunity to show the college football world that he truly is one of the football geniuses of his time. That's different than taking it because nobody wants the job or simply because it's his turn. He won't go into with an attitude of I'll do my best but don't expect much. I don't see this as him looking for his retirement bonus. I see this as an opportunity to secure his legacy. I also believe he knows how to do it. He's done it here before.

The key is buy in.  I'm not sure he has the leaders on this team to get everyone else to get on board.  When he was here the first time it was Ryan Mallett that was that guy.  He (per Tyler Wilson - in One Five) was the big difference maker and got the team to buy in.

My concern is that such leaders on this team don't exist... and that these guys genuinely don't give a fuck.

I think whatever defense you can pencil in for a defense that has zero push on the line, zero linebackers to stop the run, and zero db's that can cover an old lady in a wheel chair. Whatever defense that is that can maybe slow somebody down or making them mildly annoyed will be better than whatever the fuck we have now.

It's been implied by the guys on 4th and 5 that they think T-Will thought he had a db group of Deion's out there or something because we were really hanging guys out to dry in our coverages. We aren't nearly that good to be doing that is what was implied. I tend to agree. So I think the answer to that is more zone.

Our safety play especially has been a weak link made even worse because our linebackers refuse to stop anybody.

Probably his dose of reality during the presser when he pointed out that you can't transfer and play right now.

If you want to transfer, your best bet to transfer well and make some money is to show up and show out in the next 7 games.

I'm sure he repeated that to the players.  Basically, play hard or Bobby can bury you and you'll be left transferring to Jonesboro or Tulsa.

Bobby knew in spring 2024 that KJ Jackson was the future of this football team. In a panic of a move in Dec 2023, they bought Taylen. They had no backup plan. Bobby's choice and Fletch's money.

They had to play him. He prays to the Lord (which I have no problems with) but he is borderline retarded (Vince Young level Wonderlics) and is not fit to be QB1 in SEC play. His only future in football is at WR and I pray that he is there and KJ is taking snaps in Knoxville.

I think Petrino likes Green and has stubbornly stuck with him for a reason.  I'm relatively confident if he thought that KJ was a better option, he'd have been playing him.

I have a feeling that if Green shits the bed bad enough, we'll see KJ.

Petrino is going to go balls out and do whatever he can to get the full time job. He's going to go with the best option, damn the commitments or NIL agreements.

Remember, Green got benched for a series last year against Auburn, in a game we won.

Maybe. Or maybe not. I guess we will see soon enough. I could see there being pressure to play the top NIL guy too. But, I think Bobby has a long leash the rest of this season to do it his way. I think we will see it evidenced on all 3 phases. He's an extreme micro manager and demands exceptional efforts. Whether he gets that or not, will determine his future here.

Goes without saying, but it'll be interesting to see what the crowds are like the rest of the way in Fayetteville.

I suppose that might somewhat be determined how we do against Tennessee and whether we play an egg with a team full of quit, but I could see turnout being decent to good just to see a Bobby P led team, at least until the novelty wears off.

I'm not sold on the notion that Bobby would be pressured by NIL.  I think he stubbornly clings to some things, we all know he has a history of doing that.  He also has a love of guys that can do special things.  He used to frequently say of Mallett that there were 3-4 plays every game that no other QB could have made.  He has said similar about Green.  Which also brings up a real pro/con of Bobby's system... He relies on his QB being smart enough to bail him out of a bad play.  I don't think TG has the smarts or length of leash to do that.  Mallett did, and even then he and Petrino would sometimes butt heads with Petrino being mad that Mallett changed the call, even though the call Mallett made was the right one.  He needs a QB that is smart, and has the force of will and character to make the right call and stand up to him.  I don't think TG has that... and he definitely doesn't have the long leash.  Of course, you're also correct.  We shall see if Bobby starts putting out KJ.

Hell, I'm tempted to buy tickets.  If this year plays out and Bobby is the man next year, I will 100% be booking tickets and flights for me and my son to see a BMFP led team at home.  Back in 2010 and 2011 I simply couldn't due to work and family stuff, and had planned 2012 to go to Bama or Ole Miss, and then USCe.  Alas, I was cheated (I will never forgive Jeff Long).  Of course, if we look like we might be able to do something maybe I'll make the Mizzery game.  I'd like to make MSST, but no chance of that as I'm helping my mom move on October 31.

On the subject of Petrino's future.  It has been mentioned here many times and DJ keeps reiterating it on his podcast.  Bobby has become very predictable.  Some of that is TG always selecting the same option during a play call... whether it is that super predictable RPO, or some of the route options on a pass.  DJ was harping on it again last night.  I can't help but wonder if that is a result of TG, Bobby losing his edge, the O not grasping enough of the playbook, Bobby's stubbornness, or what.  However, it is obvious that defenses have sniffed out and solved for many of his tendencies.  I'll be interested to see if some of that changes moving forward... If not, Bobby probably isn't the guy.

I'm in favor of ditching a lot of that RPO bullshit in favor of some meat and potatoes pro style play calling. Green is still going to get plenty of run opportunities out of broken plays and forced runs because of coverage down the field.

Green is not the future...KJ may be the future at Arkansas or elsewhere with or without Bobby. If KJ is "ready" then I'd expect there to be a shift to him at some point this season maybe with a 4 or 5 games left. This benefits him and Bobby in terms of potential chemistry moving forward.

Our running game has not been good and I'd expect a different look out of that coming. We've got too good of RBs to not be getting more out of them than we are. Something has to change. We need to be leaning on the running game to run clock and keep our fucking shitty defense off the field. Play ball control provided we aren't giving up TDs left and right.

We've backed out of the running game a bit too much if you ask me.  I'm not sure of the reason, really.  I think DJ and others eluded to an OL issue causing our backs to not hit the hole or allowing DL to come through by releasing them thinking the other guy was responsible for him.  We had a few series that looked great, lean on the run and then play action... then suddenly we aren't doing it anymore.  IDK if it's Petrino or TG.  I also wonder how much of the OL Bobby has been actually responsible for.  What we know for sure is that there is terrible communication on D, and sloppy/poor communication on O.  I hope Bobby fixes that issue.

Between the two positions they are generally regarded as far different. The drops and steps are significantly different.

This has mostly changed because teams are not just running right at defenses anymore.

So you have a tackle ideally suited for backside protection and the other tackle typically on the right side that's usually a bit more of an athlete and or weak link.

There's probably more technical reasons than that but anyway that's the gist

It was to expand the running game playbook. We barely had one serviceable tackle much less asking two to protect Mallett's backside.

At this point, it's better to do basic and the "meat and potatoes" stuff well then introducing anything.

Yes I think he played the first couple games and really should have got some meaningful snaps the other day but they never went to him. He redshirted last season so none of that four game stuff means a whole lot other than maybe working a medical year for him down the line.

We may see less of the zone RPO we keep trying to establish, but has been sniffed out and countered by the last two defenses, relatively easily.

I moreso meant pressure from his boss to keep trotting him out there. I think Bobby had full reigns on play calling, but might have been getting overruled on some personnel decisions. I think we see a little more of KJ, especially if these next two get out of reach, like we expect or if Green is just playing bad. If there's going to be a time to make adjustments, against Tennessee will be the time.  Two weeks to install, right?

I think the most we can hope for is effort and maybe a shift in the base defense, but I don't think they can do much in the way of scheme install.

I'll take that.  I have to say if we had three or four starters on defense that didn't make the trip to Knoxville, I'd be ok with that too.

Quote from: Borenutz on Sep 30, 2025, 12:19 PMI moreso meant pressure from his boss to keep trotting him out there. I think Bobby had full reigns on play calling, but might have been getting overruled on some personnel decisions. I think we see a little more of KJ, especially if these next two get out of reach, like we expect or if Green is just playing bad. I don't expect to see him dropped in as starter on the next two by any means, but if Green plays poorly over the next two, and KJ shows promise, he might want to show a flash of the future for his resume.

In the case of Green, since he's done anyway after this year and looking at his NIL as a sunk cost, there's not really anything now to force playing him for political reasons.

I mean, he could always Nope out of the rest of the season, but if he does, oh well.

petrino brought him in and the offensive staff is still together, he ain't leaving because pittman is gone.

1400 yards, 62%, 12/5, and 441 rushing yards and 2 more td.

No QB is perfect and Bobby's system demands a lot from them.

I think we forget some of the boneheaded plays Mallett made in 2010, namely in the loss to Bama.

Green is a darkhorse Heisman candidate for a reason (or he was before we imploded: they dont give those to teams with losing records)

Green probably gives us the best chance to win otherwise I figure Petrino would go to the KJ kid...but on the same token I can see him getting some reps if this thing continues to go tits up. Might as well work with the kid and potentially take him with you to the next stop.

Agreed. He has a lot of natural talent but his achilles heel is his mindset.

Rather than play to win, he plays not to lose...and there is a big difference between the two.

Green's mindset was exactly like his head coach. Playing not to lose.  He always tightened up in crunchtime and not a killer.  Our whole team under tits was like that.  It is how he was like 7-19 in one score games.  It is unlikely the loser stench of tits can be completely washed off the team with the remainder of the season, but who knows.

Yes.

You'll notice that all of these faggoty sports writers were all happy to lay upon us their friendly advice and tell us who would be a great fit for us over the last ten years.  "Oh he'd be a great fit yadda yadda..."  This same group of knobs told us that HDN was perfect and we couldn't do any better.

They shit all over us for hiring Petrion back in the day and here they are again telling us what's supposedly good for us.  We all know the reason and it's not b/c they're actually the Bible Brigade.

BMFP is a real, professional, hard-nosed coach who gets results.  They saw what happened before and they don't want the Hogs upsetting the happy little apple cart of Bama, UGA, Florida, and those Big12 dipshits.

Whether he pans out or not doesn't matter.  To them we are the rednecks and hillbillies who don't wear shoes and pound their cousins.  They want to keep us down and we can pound whomever we want b/c this is a free country.

Their encounter lasted only "15 seconds," Pitino said.

"She said to me that she is extremely fertile. She said her husband had looked at her four times and that she got pregnant," he said.

Hearing this, Pitino said, he "immediately pulled out."

Under an awkward cross-examination, he was asked how Sypher could have become pregnant if he did not ejaculate.

"I did," he said. "Down my leg."

Sypher, who says she became pregnant and had an abortion, waited six years to threaten to reveal the details of the brief, messy time together if he did not pay up.

First official presser as HC today.

Talked about how the defense has responded well to the changes and that the whole environment of practice is different. He's running things his way and expecting players to adapt, and it sounds like they have.

Talked a little about getting Crutchfield better involved going forward.

Mostly fluff questions.

I think he's the one that had a high ankle sprain and Bobby said he's probably getting on the field once he's healthy. Also talked about Crutchfield having the physical traits but has to get the mental part down in order to see the field.

Nice hearing a coach talking about players in a very specific manner and not bullshit everyone with platitudes.

I'm pretty confident he's going to win enough to keep the job. We will improve every week under him.

There was a discussion out here about being able coach effort into a kid I didn't get involved in. I learned early that fear is a motivating factor. Kids of today will still respond to it, we've just stopped using it. I respected my old man and respect is 90% fear.

Yes it is and does... so long as they stick around enough for it.  That has been the big question with instilling a sense of toughness and effort into the players.  Will they stick around or just constantly opt/portal out.  Especially if someone is offering them more money.  Then all we're doing year in and year out is building players for other teams, never seeing the benefit of a couple of years of toughness, and resetting each year.

You're onto something.

The hardest thing for a coach to do is to get the guys to play hard consistently.  The great coaches are the people who can do that.  How is it done, though?  Well, one way is to actually make it fun for the guys.  Good luck with that.  There aren't many coaches capable of doing it that way.  Because what the hell in football is fun other than the games?  Scoring lots of points is fun, but getting there isn't.

Basketball is always fun, practice or games doesn't matter.  Playing in baseball games is so boring, but practices are fun.  Football practice fucking sucks.

Fear is the most consistent motivator to get young men to bust their ass.  Rah rah can't be used every week.  Fear of fucking up and discipline are how you build empires.

I feel like this particular group of kids may actually be yearning for a bit of tough love.  And if they get some results, they may respond in a big way.

That isn't to say we're going to win all the rest of our games or that the Petrino approach will work longterm, but I just have a feeling these kids need and want some structure and direction.

I think, at one time or another in our lives, we have all been under the authority of someone who was not a natural leader; someone who could not make the right decisions under pressure and when they did make a decision there was absolutely no confidence in their eyes or--even worse--there was panic.

It's a miserable existence and it's contagious and group failure is almost guaranteed; but, if by happy chance that authority figure is replaced by a true leader, the results can be amazing.

We all want to believe that. It's been a long two weeks. Two weeks ago, I felt TN would blow our doors off with Pittman running the show, but I have a feeling we will compete in Knox. No transfers, maybe that's circumstantial, with the portal stuff, but I'm also going to give some credit to the staff and leadership. This could have been a lot uglier.

Hard to deny some wishful thinking but the signs seem promising.  I wouldn't have bet ten cents that there would be no portals by now.

Defensive staff threw too much at the transfers.  Sometimes dumb is smart.

Travis trying to show all he knows and proved he didn't know the most important thing of all.

Petrino scrapped it all, going back to base, and focusing less on complex defense and more about lining up and playing fast, and shedding blocks.

I think we see a much better defense.  Sure, there will still be issues with our conditioning and getting athletically beat.  But better.

The conditioning alone is unbelievable.  And can't be fixed.  Sam really screwed us there and it will take a year to fix.

Sounded like they were following the same approved script from the Pittman era. Of course none of them know how to ask a very football technical kind of question. Then again I'm not sure Petrino is going to give them anything other teams can use against us.

Like say he was asked if there are going to be any changes in terms of who starts/plays and he said sure...but he's not going to tell them. Obviously WR we are going to see some guys have to play that haven't played much due to injuries. I won't be shocked if E'Marion Harris is benched in favor of someone else. The DL I don't know what options we have but there may be a young guy or two they work in instead of some of the slugs we've seen so far.

Strength and conditioning can make or break a team and thus a coach's tenure.

Sowders has been an unmitigated disaster. Forget the effort and quit, this team looks weak. Defensive linemen are getting zero pressure, and we're utterly incapable of making a solo tackle. I've never seen a defense give up more second chance yards and get out-muscled at the point of attack so regularly.

No transfers because they won't get their money if they go in the portal now. Wouldn't give coaches that much credit for keeping the team together.

I seem to recall during Chaggie's first spring here there was a story about some players getting their asses chewed for stepping out of line during conditioning drills. Apparently under Bert they were allowed to do that when they were tired.

Pittman probably hasn't been much different.

the turf on one of the practice fields led to a lot of players getting a foot tho.

Bert hated the hurry up / Gus malzahn offense and it was like he built his teams to go a completely different direction just to make a point. The whole "we'll kick your ass if you don't have a fullback" etc.

It was so frustrating. I know defense wins championships but you have to have a dynamic offense to be competitive. Bert was so unprepared for the sec. He said, "Look what I did at Wisconsin. Hold my 30 pack and watch what me do the same at Arkansas. And I can do it with no effort."

We are never going to be able to consistently win with good defenses.  There just aren't enough quality defensive linemen and linebackers to go around.  Most of them get picked up by Alabama, Georgia, texass, etc.

The equalizer with a program like ours is a bad ass offense.  Fast guys (if you aren't worried too much about size) and QBs who can run and throw a little are a dime a dozen.  Sign as many of those as you can, spread the field to make it impossible to cover them all, and find ways to get them the ball. Something like feed the studs has a nice ring to it.

I was a big fan of Veltkamp. I didn't like getting pushed around by Bama or LSU, but a lot of teams did. According to former players, he focused a lot on speed, flexibility, and agility. Those teams were usually nails in the second half, especially in the 4th quarter.

Conversely, I was an OG Ben Herbert darksider. He overrotated on pure squat and bench numbers and paid little to no attention on speed and conditioning. Just like Sam, we blew a shitload of second half leads under Bert because we'd run out of gas, and our linemen could squat cars but couldn't block small, quick ends in pass pro. Remember when our pass blocking would get eaten alive by the likes of Sanford and Toledo?

I actually liked Sam's first two guys he brought with him from Georgia. They had their work cut out for them after Morris had remade us into an FCS team physically, and they turned us around from an S&C standpoint almost immediately. They ended up being the fall guys after our disappointing 2022 season, only to end up hiring Sowders.

I'd love to know the truth about what happened with Jamil Walker.  The party line was that he was undermining other coaches to the players.  If true, that is a situation where you truly do have to fire the guy. By the same token I can completely sympathize with the guy who's in charge of making guys work hard (at least in offseason) being frustrated with the apparent lack of direction and discipline from the on-field coaching staff.

Bert had the right attitude but the wrong solutions for his naive view of the SEC and how to compete against powerhouses like Alabama.  He was too locked into the Barry Alvarez / Michigan game.  His attack on the hunh was stupid; it's a great tactic to offset the endless substitutions of better deeper teams at the top in the SEC.

I liked his emphasis on a powerful OLine and running game.  I thought his history of raising nfl o linemen would be our calling card.  He failed there because of his other failures, primarily his disregard of strength and stamina. The Heat murdered him and he gave that squad too much time off.

He had two masterful playbooks in the archive, and could have learned from Gus as well.  JFB had the same issue against the SWC, and figured it out.  Recruit Texas heavy with HS coaching networks, speed to the ball, brains, no turnovers or dumb penalties, and stamina.  BMFP showed how to do it with great quarterback play and a big playbook.

In the end he was brought down by his arrogance, stubborness, and laziness.

I mean, I KNOW we aren't going to win many of the games remaining on our schedule...but the hope that we could look like we give a shit and know kinda what we know what we are doing gives me a tingly feeling.

I mean, I KNOW we aren't going to win many of the games remaining on our schedule...but the hope that we could look like we give a shit and know kinda what we know what we are doing gives me a tingly feeling.
You should know better. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."  ;D

I get it but he was so stubborn about it to the point of sabotage.
I actually thought he didn't run enough Power I. Our running backs were awesome with a lead blocker. Besides the Texas Tech game we were majority pro set.

Quote from: Texzilla on Oct 08, 2025, 11:22 AMBert had the right attitude but the wrong solutions for his naive view of the SEC and how to compete against powerhouses like Alabama.

Bert just didn't recruit speed. We were slow in team speed.

A power I would work great in this age of spread them out offenses, defenses aren't built to stop a power run game.

Power I only works when you have an advantage on the lines of scrimmage.  Arkansas will rarely have that in the SEC.

Truth - he was used to the lack of speed in the big 10.

Remember the fake punts he would try with the punter running around the end? In the plodding big 10 it could work but in the sec there was zero chance as the everyone on a sec d-line was as fast as a big 10 running back if not faster.

He wanted to out Alabama Alabama, nice concept but was never going to happen.

I think it's important to remember that the Big 10 had a few of their major programs on probation when Bert did well, and the players were all Alvarez's players.

pretty sure ohio st was the only b10 football program on probation then. meyer still went 36-3 with a nc.

edit: pedo st was put on probation the year he left.

Much like Sowders did with Rocket in 2023.

Not to mention Alvarez was AD while Bert was HC at Wisconsin and maintained close oversight on the football program.

He was able to cut loose and have free rein at Arkansas because he worked for a weak, feckless twerp of an AD in Jeff Long who was more interested in profile building and the CFP committee.

Fired the Ddfensive staff.  Those players loved travis Williams they played hard for him!"  Huh?  Fuck those idiots.

I'm nowhere near ready to declare Bobby 2.0 a failure. That's a crazy take, imo.

Tennessee is the worst possible first opponent considering our circumstances that lead to the coaching change.

If we were playing Auburn at home tonight, we're winning and everyone's mood is totally different.

This team needs four wins to reach a bowl. We have two games at home and three on the road. It was always going to be a tall task, but this is clearly not the same team that played Notre Dame, or Ole Miss for that matter.

this game wasn't going to decide anything. he's got more opportunities and if today is any indication, he's got a great shot at being the next coach.

gotta have wins instead of excuses tho.

Ridiculous take.

Most of the guys who go straight from assistant to head coaching jobs successfully either do so at a lower level school or at a football factory where winning is easier.  Rarely do you see one go to a place like Ole Miss, Arkansas, or MSU and succeed.  You don't have the margin for error to learn how to manage a program on the fly here that you would at Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, etc.

Yeah, history has no relevance.  Better to take the 1/100 shot than the 1 in 5.  Especially when the expected payout is the same.

I'll add this:  if we do go the route of an assistant, hiring someone from Georgia, Ohio State, etc. makes the odds of success even worse.  Whether we go with assistant or experienced HC we need to find someone with experience at a program where winning doesn't come easily.  The worst possible move would be to go get someone like Schumann whose experience is all from places where you can recruit a top five class without ever getting on an airplane for a visit.

1 in 5 for what? Arkansas statistically has very little chance to lift the crystal. A retread coach certainly won't. Swinney had never even been a coordinator.

One in five that your head coach turns out successful.  Versus one in a hundred if you go get the hot name coordinator from a football factory.

Clemson has advantages that we don't.  Much easier to win there.  Even so, Dabo was about to be gone if he hadn't been saved by hiring Chad Morris while he was still an early adopter of the spread.  Do you think Arkansas fans will be willing to sit through three years of underachieving while the next coach figures it out or happens into a good coordinator hire?
