Title: 2027 Razorback Baseball
Post by: BleedinRed on Jun 05, 2026, 09:58 AM
Time to wash the stank off from the 2026 season.

What do we have coming back?

Got an infielder and outfielder from the portal.  Both have decent power numbers at their previous mid-major stops.

That'll work. Now desperately need starting pitching.

Good pickups, and goes to my "stop recruiting .260 hitters and get guys who hit."

Allen hit .310 with a 1.005 OPS.

Bryce is a career .340 / .970 guy.

I keep pointing to guys like Davalon, Maxwell, and Ruiz from the last two years (and the inverse examples of guys like John Bolton, Niu, and Stewart). Guys who hit...hit. Guys who can't hit...don't just magically find it.

Nate (or the strength coach) seems to do okay with guys who show up with the hit tool but lack power.  He's useless with power bats who get to campus with a ton of swing and miss.  Hopefully we focus on the former rather than the latter in this class.

100%...well said.

Nate coaches the long ball well, but if you're a guess hitter who relies on just running into one, then you're not going to get better under him.

That's precisely why guys like Stewart, Niu and Pompey were so bad this year, whereas the aforementioned guys like Davalon, Maxwell, Iredale, and Ruiz succeeded. Davalon hit like .400 at his previous school, Maxwell was hitting well into the .300s at TCU, and Ruiz hit .380 at Lamar. Hitters hit, plain and simple.

I never want to recruit another "active NCAA career leader in home runs" again. That's great, but can he single a guy in from 2nd with 2 outs in a tight game, or work a count to draw a walk in a leverage situation?

True, but that was in 18 games before getting injured.

He looked like the epitome of a guess hitter here, and it looked like he got markedly worse under Nate's coaching. There was just way too swing and miss with him. Almost more than I've seen from any Razorback player I can ever remember.

He led the team with 88 strikeouts. No other player even had 70. Niu had 69, and then we had a few guys in the mid 50s. I'm not sure I've seen a gap that wide in terms of strikeouts.

After being Naterized he probably hits .310 with 15 HR.

Big kid too.  Only 67 strikeouts over two years.

Seems like the type that Nate actually does well with.  Already has the contact tool but with room to add power.

Nice.  We seem to be focusing on contact over power.  Nate can teach power if the guy has the hit tool.  He can't really do it the other way around (although to be fair Wehiwa did make strides).

100%

DVH made a big mistake last year getting .260 hitters like Niu and Stewart and thinking Nate could develop them.

Give me guys like Maxwell and Davalon who could already hit for average and developed into power hitters here.

Honestly Wehiwa hit for contact pretty well at Sac State too.  I was thinking of his first year here and all the swing and miss, but he did hit .376 as a freshman.

On the other hand, Wiggins wasn't super impressive in the combine today.

Honestly starting pitching is much more of a need, and much harder to find than outfield help in the portal this year.

Rumors out there today that we may be the high bidder for RH starting pitcher Thomas Allen of La Tech.

He'll be a sophomore, and I don't think he's draft eligible.

Helfrick, Dietz, and Kozeal were solid all year. Gaeckle was hit and miss, and Wiggins never saw the mound. McElvain is the only other solid contributor (maybe Ruiz) that wasn't picked. Our issue was that everyone else played poorly. Significant drop off from the guys mentioned.

Bryce will play either 3rd or 1st.

Souza will hit .300+ with 12+ HR in 2027.  He improved as the season went on, and was less than a year out from shoulder reconstruction.  It takes time for the power to come back.  By the end of the year the opposite field warning track outs from early season were going over the wall.

I think they oversigned infielders intentionally knowing this might happen.  Got burned last year in committing to Grego as starting SS only to see him sign for less than he told our staff it would take.

Not worried much about the infield, or the lineup in general.  Someone is going to have to make a massive jump in the offseason for the starting rotation to not be asstastic.

Just take balls and strikes away from the home plate ump.  They can call catcher balks, swings, etc.

That's like saying cancer is a part of life, so we shouldn't take an opportunity to get rid of it if one presents itself.

The game has a set of rules, including a defined strike zone.  Human umpires don't enforce this consistently, at least not without being held accountable by technology.  Watch any MLB game now that ABS challenges are available.  Umpires have adjusted their strike zones to the actual rule book definition.  The rule change has forced them to get better at their job.

This.

...and I've seen games changed on correcting a bad call. For example, instead of an inning ending strikeout on a bad call, the inning gets extended when the call gets reversed. I'm a big fan of new system. It doesn't slow the game down while correcting human errors.

As a Braves fan, I'm glad they didn't have it when Glavine pitched.

At first, I thought it would be like a close call where the umps had to go into the den of confusion to decide how to fuck us. However, it doesn't slow the game down at all.

Same.  It's practically instantaneous.  Also adds another level of strategy...which batters/catchers do you let challenge, in what counts/situations do you use them even if the call is bad, etc.

For those who will say the umpires get almost all of them right, remember that in the first game in Hoover 7 of the first 8 challenges were successful.  If nothing else that should identify at least one umpire who might be better suited to a different occupation.

The real issue is the ABS system isn't really solving a problem.  Why?  Because there really isn't a problem.  I've never subscribed to the phylosophy of "If we save but just one kid, then the solution was totaly worth it!".

I like a little caous that the human element brings into the system.  Does it piss me off when it goes against me?  Sure.  Do I take great joy when it goes against my enemy?  Absolutly.

The truth is, most calls that are being overturned by the ABS system are balls and strikes where the pitch literlaly missed the "zone" by less than a cunts hair.   The game, particularly the professional game, will turn into an even more bland product as everything will eventually be so scripted and the fire and passion that variability brings will be lost.

Soapbox rant over.  I'll adapt.  It will be fine.

Those are fair points as a fan of the game itself., although I still don't agree.  But I don't see how any Arkansas fan could ever turn away anything that would remove an opportunity for officiating to fuck us over.  Contrary to what logic and everyone not affiliated with Arkansas says, the calls DO NOT even out for us...numerically or situationally.  Sure we might get a pitch go our way in the 5th inning of a 10-2 blowout, but that doesn't counteract the one that goes against us with the bases loaded and two outs down two runs in the bottom of the 8th or the one that walks in the tying run with two outs in the 9th.

If we got enough consecutive bad calls in our favor to offset the ones that have gone against us just in my lifetime, our kids would have grandkids by the time the totals were balanced.

I used to have a picture of a game we played against Ole Piss a few years ago. It showed a pitch where the catcher was nearly all the way over in the other batter's box, and was called a strike by the ump. Of course it was against us, so maybe that was his strike zone. At least this new thing will keep shit like that from happening.

The main thing I want to get rid of (besides the fallibility) is the bias. Humans are prone to it and despite it being an umps job to be completely objective, it's been shown time and time again that many call the game differently for different teams or players.

I'm all for ABS and honestly would be fine if all pitches were shown and ball/strike was called off of that.  I'm a purist and like the human element but think it would give a more accurate and perhaps quicker game with more accuracy.  Most aren't going to challenge an incorrect ball/strike on a 1-0 count in the 1st inning.

On another (and unrelated) note, my oldest is playing in Lake Point, GA at the 17U National Champ tourney.  They are currently playing Nick Markakis' 17U team.  About 180 teams from literally all over the country.  No telling how many future college kids are down there.  I'm stuck at home for work and to watch after our dogs.

Most of our team is going to the Braves/Rangers game tomorrow night.  Dirk would be proud that my wife bought our 2 boys Braves shirts (I'm a Cards fan and chastised her).

True, there are plenty of MLB catchers who can't hit.  You would have thought he could catch on as a short term backup at least.

Opitz was never exactly Mike Piazza at the plate, but he was a hell of a defensive player behind it.

Had a cannon for an arm, called a great game, and was one of the best blockers I've ever seen (which is something we've struggled with in recent years).

His ability to keep Kopps's cutter in front of him was downright amazing. More than a few of those dirtball strikeouts would have wound up at 1st base with lesser catchers.

the contract added one year, this was more about the bump in pay. it was pretty well known he was very unhappy about the funding for the program so the not going anywhere part was not necessarily true.

yurachek made the stupid comments about money a year ago, things have obviously changed so i'm not sure why that keeps being brought up.

It doesn't take much brains for him to say yes when someone in Sexton's office says "hey...we'll kick you a few bucks on the side if you get your coaches on our roster and give them the deals we want."

The fact that HY seems to have the IQ of your average Somali Learing Center graduate is what leads me to believe he'll slip up and we'll find out about it.  He probably deposited the cash payment into his joint checking account and added "Sexton reimbursement - Pittman Extension" in the memo line of the deposit slip.

Yep.  We're getting fucked.  Mandatory reseating.

My donor level is guaranteed seating, but will lose one seat (3 to 2).

If I don't absolutely love the location of my seats I'm not giving these motherfuckers another dime.   I may even start actively rooting against them.

I'm not one of the chicken littles going crazy about this re-seating of Baum online, but this may be the one that Hunter steps in and doesn't recover from.

I sit in a box with fans who have for 20 years.  These are people who have donated since George Cole Field days, and helped to financially build the program.  The numbers we are being told to retain the box are astronomical.  Others we have spoken to are already telling the athletic department to go fuck themselves.

These are also people who will not be going downstairs and taking chairback seats left by fans who got priced out of those.

I am having a hard time believing that there are 34 corporate entities which will cough up the money being talked about for suites at Baum.

Even if they find these people somewhere, they have sent so many long-time loyal fans packing who won't be buying back in.  There will be very small crowds for anything other than SEC weekend games.

I'm predicting this will get walked back at some point.

I am also. BM Silver since 1995.

I was moved around and higher in the lower level for basketball but I like my seats after sitting in them this year. I'm in the corner behind the Hog bench. Good seats. Not as low as I was prior to the basketball reorganization but back then I was behind the visitors bench in the corner. It worked out better in my opinion. Parking is worse but still not that big of a deal.

I sit halfway up in the lower deck on the east side 50 yard line for football. I've been in those seats for years. I love my seats and the folks around us who have also been there for years.

All I could ever get for baseball were Hog Pen seats.

BWS has needed more points of sale,  more bathrooms, and cup holders to keep $14 beers from getting kicked over (boggle park has had em for 2+ years) for the last 10 years.

It is showing its' age.

Sec weekend crowds have been more than the faculty can handle adequately for quite awhile but hey here is another video board and some loge suites.

The atmosphere took a noticeable hit after the last reseating.

Why did they ever kill the radio feed playing in the bathrooms?

Fine if you want to charge more for the right to buy tickets but give the fans a better in game experience and a better non conference home schedule.

And remember this:
Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek said moving forward all three of those sports (football, men's basketball, and baseball) will be reseated every five years.

Hmm.  Maybe there are enough people like you to take up the slack.

The box seats are already big money.   They more than doubled.

I have no idea how anybody but big companies can afford the new numbers.  Even some relatively big local businesses are leaving.

the same was said when it happened with basketball, yet the season was a sellout.

the same will happen with baseball. if there's people that will pay more for the better seats then that's who the program will cater to. considering where college sports are at when it comes to money, that can't be a shock to anyone.

i do agree that the fan experience should improve as the ticket prices go up.
Title: Re: 2027 Razorback Baseball
Post by: DirkPiggler on Aug 23, 2026, 07:42 PM
I'm done whining about it.  We can make it with two seats if that's what we get for the next five years.  But if I don't absolutely love the location of the seats they offer I'm out, and I'm not coming back regardless of any future changes in my financial situation in a positive direction.  They will have lost me forever, or at least until Yurachek finally gets the treatment he deserves.

I'll add this.   I would have preferred to have it like last time, where we get the option to keep our same seats for a higher donation versus just getting shut out of them the way they did the football restructuring.   The specific location of our seats is a big selling point.  I'd keep those over a lot of "better" seats if I had the chance.  If they told me we could double our donation and keep our seats I'd hold my nose and do it, just like last time.

The main problem is they let some donors get up to 12 tix per account. That was ridiculous. Hopefully that will be fixed as part of the reseating.

I know I can't make it to every series, but I try to give them out to folks on here and X. If you guys get squeezed out and I can somehow score seats, I'm sure we'll have some to give out.

The move here,  if we had a competent athletic director (but instead we have Hunter Yurachek) would be to leverage the few rich donors who don't have suites to build 6-10 second-deck suites.  They can be right behind home plate.

Instead,  they are uprooting some very wealthy donors who have consistently given large amounts to the program for 20 plus years, to accommodate about 6 donors who give around 1 million a year, have football and basketball boxes,  but don't have baseball boxes.

They might not even break even after all of the big money they are telling to go fuck themselves.

I'm not a big baller, but my friends are,  and some of of the names who are livid over this and basically telling the UA to fuck off is impressive.  You wouldn't believe it.

This is another big failure by the shitty AD who cannot raise funds,  who cannot approach potential big donors,  and who has to leave gameday improvements to the new football coach because he sucks so much at his job it's hard to figure out what he does.
