Title: World Cup
Post by: Hogfan58 on Jun 06, 2026, 01:49 PM
USA playing Germany in our last warmup before the WC starts. We're already down 1-0 and they had another ruled out for offsides. We are not good.

If you are on Twitter, you need to follow this guy:

He's a German traveling through the US to follow the World Cup.  He's never been to the US, and his observations are funny and interesting. He was at Auburn last night.

There are a couple of other people from other countries doing the same thing.  Kinda interesting to get their perceptions of this country.

Last thing the regime would want is a player defecting and showing up on stage with Trump.

You probably know this already, but without offside, soccer would be a totally different game.  Offside rewards footwork, speed, skill, passing, positioning, tactics, field management, and discipline on attack and defense.  Without offside, you could do away with the whole field, because it would just be "park 5 tall guys in front of the other goal and boot it into the chaos".

Why do they need a water break in an air conditioned dome?

When I was in shape I used to run 45+ minutes, no stopping, no water. There are some of the finest athletes in the world.

These guys that play the full game probably run about 4 miles a match.

Is offsides always the trailing leg of the deepest defender?

I googled muthafucka and it is the aforementioned criterion plus the player who is offsides becoming an active player in the play, i. e. receiving a pass, engaging a defender, blocking the goalie's view, etc.

They are doing water breaks for all the games to make it fair for all teams, no matter where they're playing. It's more about the commercials and the tactical changes the coaches can make than the hydration. It wouldn't be fair for teams playing indoors not to have that, but teams playing outside to.

I would like to see them adjust the offsides rule so that the offensive player must be completely past the defender rather than, say, his nose or his pinky being past the defender.  That's chickenshit.

I don't know the finer details of the game.  What I do know is if a really fast guy out runs another fast guy he should be entitled to receive a pass from anywhere on the field.  This having to wait to outrun my guy until my team kicks the ball down the field is bullshit.

We do that if we are running full court 4v4 and definetly 3v3.

Really fast guys already outrun other really fast guys, and receive passes from all over the field, all the time under the offside rule.  The rule just requires them to time their runs, like a WR can't jog behind the defense before the snap in football.  Without offside, fast guys beating other fast guys to a pass would happen far less and maybe never, because there would be no reason to ever have players, however fast, in the middle of the field.

The strategy without offside would be: park the GK plus 5 tall defenders and 5 tall attackers in each goal box, and wait for a hoof-ball from the other end of the field.  Then, there'd be a header contest, a scrum for the ball, and either a goal, a corner, or yet another long boot to the other end of the field.  It could be some kind of sport, but it wouldn't be soccer.

I hear you.  I've spent zero time assessing the consequences of doing away with the offside penalty.   I'm basing my comments on the handful of times when I have watched soccer and seen a great pass and score get nullified because the receiving/scoring player was 1 millimeter ahead of the closest defender.

Surely "they" can come up with rules to prevent the negative consequences you laid out.

I would also like to see the game shift from 99% passing at midfield, the defense kicking the ball out of play any time they are in an unfavorable position, and flopping.

Well, I think that's all the cans of worms I can open here.  After reading my response, OQ's head is about to explode I'm sure.   ;D

And a lot of lower level soccer already looks like this. Having coached more youth league than I could have ever imagined, my experience is that the hardest thing to teach is staying in position rather than chasing the ball everywhere.

I think the offside rule could be tweaked so that only the more obvious violations are called, but it is absolutely essential. I geek out on watching a defense set a high line and force an offside.

Or have an own goal that breaks a tie at the 89' mark and the official doesn't allow stoppage time and ends it. They review it in Birmingham and call it fine at the time, but tomorrow will say "Well, it was a bad call, but oh well."

Ask how I know?  Everything is setting up too perfectly.  Look how many of the good teams are bowing out early.  It really is setting up for a glorious run for the US, so you just know we will fuck it.

Depends on how long the pussies rolled around on the ground in "pain".

Basically they keep track of the minutes play isn't happening, then add it on at the end of each half to neutralize the time effect of faking injuries.

I understand the rule.  I understand why you and the majority of the soccer world thinks it a necessary rule.  I think it's stupid rule in CERTAIN SITUATIINS and I think it could be tweaked to increase scoring opportunity while not also fundamentally ruining the sport as it's played now.  I don't know why that would be a controversial topic of conversation.

Praise be to alah there isn't a similar rule in basketball.

Edit: one last thing, sports rules are tweaked, added, deleted all the time.  See college football kickoffs as exhibit A.

Good, but mostly long in the tooth.  Many of their stars are in the early to mid-30's.  Tielmans, who got the PK yesterday is 29, and one of the better players.  He plays for Aston Villa in the Premier League, and De Bruyna plays for Man City.  Lukaku used to play for Everton (and others), and is now at AC Milan.  Lukaku and De Bruyna are both around 35.

I think we have a very good shot against them.  I really enjoy our style of play, which is a lot more vertical.  I think we're light years better than we were in the last World Cup.

Offsides takes away a Ronaldo goal.

I think the problem for the casual fan is that goals are SO RARE, for everyone to get all excited about a once in a blue moon occurrence, that it seems ticky tacky to take it away because the offensive player was 1 toe past the defensive player. They need to find a way to blow the play dead for offsides so we don't get all excited about a goal in the first place.

Use Balogun as an example. His parents are Nigerian and were living in England. Parents were visiting the US, she was 7 months pregnant and airline wouldn't let her travel back to England. He was born here, so he could play for Nigeria, England or the US. He chose the US.

Trump probably said it would be a shame if the FIFA HQ accidentally caught a stray JDAM during whatever our next military engagement might be.  Would be a real shame, a real shame, but these things happen ya know, from time to time.  They are unavoidable during war.  They just happen sometimes.  One minute your pretty FIFA HQ is there, the next it is just gone, poof, gone, like it never existed.  So sad when these types of things happen.  Just gone.  Would be such a shame if something like that were to happen.

Anyway, where were we.  Oh yes, back to the 250th celebration and our big soccer match against Belgium.  What a marvelous country Belgium is.  I don't have any hotels in Belgium yet, but I might soon, I might soon.  Wonderful people, wonderful waffles.  I prefer pancakes myself, but waffles are wonderful too.  So many little pockets for the butter and syrup.

Europe is a wonderful place, but needs more development.  We are looking to build more hotels there and I hear there could be some new land available at    Zürich, Switzerland, FIFA-Strasse 20 should certain developments come to pass, we shall see, we shall see, I hope not, but we shall see.

We were outplayed, out hustled, and just plain looked like we didn't belong there. How bad were the teams we beat to get there? I don't think we won a jump ball, head hit the whole night. They were taller and looked more athletic. We lost.

So the US World Cup Team gets farther than they have in 40 years, then gets a bullshit red card, suspending one of their best players for 1-3 games, including the next WC game.

Then your President makes a phone call regarding his United States National team, and the bullshit red card gets overturned.

FIFA is corrupt as fuck, I don't think they needed Trump to make a call to get the RC over-turned. They want TV ratings and having Balogun playing helped  that, so they used Article 27 to do it. Just like they did to ensure that Christano Ronaldo would be able to play in the group stage. And if you don't think Messi and Argentina aren't getting calls their way, you haven't been watching. FIFA knows the stars and big teams drive the viewers and they will make sure they will get as far into the tournament as possible without making it TOO obvious.

I don't remember who was our woopig rules expert on offsides. But how about this modification?

You can't be offsides on a pass that originates inside the box. By the time you're down there, there is no such thing as snowbirding. You're already all down there anyway. This would eliminate goal nullification when somebody was a cunt hair past the defender, when you're already all inside the damn box to begin with and the rationale for offsides (camping past the defense) doesn't apply.

The main problem with this is that the human line judge is already given a difficult task: to physically line himself up with the last defender to judge the position of the attacker at the moment a pass is initiated.  Adding this complication would require the line judge to simultaneously judge the position of the last defender and the attacker, and whether the ball is already in the box, at the time the pass is initiated, within a crowd of players.

It's also a complicated solution in search of a problem.  As it stands, no goals are being nullified: receiving the ball offside is the end of play: dead ball, turnover.  Whatever the offside player does with the ball after receiving it is null from the moment of the offside.

The last paragraph is circular reasoning. Of course goals are being nullified. They're being approved on the field, then nullified by offsides on VAR. I guess Alabama didn't win all those forfeited games they won on the field either, right?

Which part of the paragraph bases its conclusion on one of its premises?  It's binary: either the pass receiver is offside or he isn't.  If he's offside, the play is dead and it's a turnover.  During an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the field ref often lets play continue after the line judge raises the flag because it's better left to VAR at that point.

Imagine a football team on offense at the opposing one yard line.  They line up and punch it in, and everyone celebrates!  Then we all see a flag was thrown, because the right tackle was offside during the snap.  Is that "touchdown nullification", or just a dead ball penalty?

So the 100,000 times a basketball announcer has said "they disallow the basket because the foul occurred prior to the shot", they were all incorrect because there was never any basket to begin with?

I understand exactly what you're saying, and it's semantics but you're not using language in the way normal people use it.

It feels like offsides is a bigger issue because it often takes away scoring in a low scoring sport. A goal taken away from an offsides call has a larger impact than questionable call in most other sports.

I believe that the offsides rule should be changed such that the offensive player must be completely past the defender to apply offside.  This would make the offside trap much more difficult to employ, and would allow for more open play.

Agreed. This shit where a guys forehead was over the line is just goofy. And to Barton's point, it's even goofier because we're not talking an 8-6 ballgame here. These matches are often settled 1-0 or 2-1.

Having watched much more soccer in the last month than I ever have, I am surprised at the percentage of goals that are scored on headers. I guess there is usually too much human down on ground level and up in the air presents the clearer paths.

The whole England-Argentina soccer rivalry is awesome. Before the game, the Argentina VP posted on Twitter about "putting the invaders in their place". After the game, the players were singing chants about Maradona and the Falklands. They held a banner that said "The Falklands are Argentine", which they are going to get fined by FIFA for doing. The Argentina coach changed his lineup, started the son of the player Beckham kicked to get a red card back in 1998. It was not a good tempered match.

I read the history of the rivalry at halftime. I had heard the term "Hand of God" in sports before, but never knew where it came from. The US coach was even involved in the 2002 match.

Makes Alabama vs Auburn look petty.

Not up on the rules, but what is keeping a team up 1-0, say with 10 minutes left, from playing "4 corners" until time runs out? Kick it down, then back to your own end/goalie, then back and forth like that. Do they have to try to score or get it past mid field?

Between what is a foul and not seems very subjective to the ref and it changes play to play.

The strategy then is play as rough as you can get away with.

OQ - want to chime in?
