Make a list of his decisions that were " questionable"
1. The football search committee in December 1997, which led us to hire Nutt instead of Tommy Tuberville.
2. Not retaining Gary Blair (not 100% on him), but insisting on a woman as Blair's replacement.
3. Hiring Jeff Long to replace Broyles.
4. Insisting on hiring a Black coach to replace Nolan Richardson, when some guy named Self was ready to accept the job.
Writes a book in leadership but is a fucking shitty leader.
What did he do right? Might end for a shorter thread.
Tracking the anals of UA administrators, I had a cousin named John White and my grandmother was Alan Sugg's stepmom. She didn't become his stepmom until she was about 60, so I doubt it was like in the movies.
random guy named John White, not that one, but the real Alan Sugg
John White was a cowardly piece of shit that enabled the institutional racism that existed at the upper levels of the Athletic Department. He teamed up with Broyles to not only push Richardson in to a corner (we were still a regularly ranked team with a recruiting comeback happening) but then also helped feed the media stories that slanted to make Richardson look bad with boosters and everyday Arkansans, which of course our dumb fanbase, including on the web, just lapped up like pussies.
Fuck that guy.
Dirk and Cerdo summed it up nicely
John White is a cunt.
His name is racist. "White" and he is named after a famed meth cooker.

That all may be true, and I am no John White fan, but Nolan hurt himself in so many ways I don't think you can lay his departure on White. Maybe the hiring of Heath, sure.

maybe not Nolan but it was at that point white meddled in athletics which he knew nothing about. Stan Heath hire was all him. Dana Altman running...all John white. He's the center figure in a hell of a lot of bad decisions for our athletics which he should have just left to the people that know athletics.
Maybe we should all go and write terrible reviews on Amazon for his stupid leadership book. That might be fun

looks like you're telling Hogslonber to fuck off and wanna start a fight. I'm here for it all
My 24 year was old son was asking about him.
He has his engineering degree from the university of Arkansas
John white has given many talks to the engineering students, he has heard him
He knows a little about his time at the u of a because we have discussed it
Want this make sure I educate him accurately as to what a disaster John white was for our school
I also know an interesting marriage connection here

Was he from Jonesboro?
Quote from: One Quarter on Apr 12, 2023, 09:56 PMWas he from Jonesboro?
No, he lived between Wabash and Barton in Phillips County. He was actually my Dad's first cousin but he son was Johnny White Jr, my second cousin.

You're still buying the bullshit they sold to you 25 years ago.

I know you don't want to hear this and probably won't believe it, but while much of it was bullshit, some was also true. Nolan was not squeaky clean. I can give examples that did not come from Broyles or one of his mouthpieces if you like.
Ironically pretty much all of the examples would be legal today excluding one big one that could have taken down the banner. None were morally wrong, but all were against the rules at the time.
The big problem from the Broyles/White end was that they forced Nolan and/or the boosters to stop doing those things once they came to light. Recruiting got to the point where no coach could have kept us nationally competitive with those restrictions.

Ok, if that's what you want to believe fine. Remember, I was alive at that time, and witnessed some of the events in real time. Nolan was no saint.
Who ever said that Nolan was a saint? This sounds like a P&R discussion with the "for me or against me" simpleness. I was on campus during the glory years. I saw that money flow, just like I have first hand accounts of the money and drugs that were flowing during Nutt and Petrino. We're talking about SEC ball.
What I'm telling you is that John White used a complicit, lapdog media to feed a bunch of bullshit to the entire state about Nolan and his issues and laziness and uppityness and what have you. Broyles was a racist and Nolan got tired of being treated that way, because he knew he didn't have to be treated that way after he accomplished what he accomplished. Orville and McDonnell both had reached a point with age that they weren't afraid of Broyles anymore and weren't afraid to push against the spin. Everyone else ran with the bullshit. It persists to this day.

You just presented your point from a perspective that appeared to insinuate that Nolan was innocent. If that was not your assertion maybe I took it wrong.
I completely agree about the character assassination that took place late in Nolan's career. Just like most situations where a relationship ends...be it employment, divorce, etc...things could have ended much better if everyone hadn't wanted to paint themselves as morally superior to the other party.
All the U of A had to do if they wanted Richardson out was wait until the end of his last season and fire him for a lack of performance. That was completely justified given the massive drop off in success over his last six years, with little to indicate things would turn around. He still would have sued (the contract called for exactly what he was paid - Nolan seemed to think his buyout would be the entire remaining amount on his contract), and the outcome would have likely been the same. Airing the dirty laundry through the state-run media did nothing but tarnish everyone. While the university "won" the lawsuit, Nolan proved a lot of his points..or rather, the university proved them for him.

I witnessed his laziness on the court, and his "uppityness" off the court on several occasions, when the media said nothing about it.
To get this thread back on topic...how in the blue hell did John fucking White get his name on a building on the U of A campus? William Mills deserves a building in his honor more than that fuckstain.

Sure. Nutt revitalized a dead program. I suspect Tuberville would have done the same thing, with higher upside and fewer WTF losses. But it's not even about the result as much as it is the process. You hire an AD and let him hire coaches. If he fails, fire him...don't passive-aggressively neuter him with bullshit processes that usually don't work.
Arkansas should never allow a coach to remain in his/her job after consecutive losing seasons, with the possible exception of them happening in the first two years of his/her tenure during a massive rebuild. And then only if the coach shows improvement from year one to year two.
The bottom line is that White tried to micromanage areas of his responsibility about which he knew less than nothing. Football and basketball (men's and women's) all were much worse as a result of John White's influence.

I have no idea why John White's name is on a building. But William Mills was one hell of an athletic specimen.

THIS.
Tuberville was a Jimmy Johnson disciple. His upside and legacy would have been markedly better than Nutt. It's ridiculous to put John White's name on anything at the UofA given his poisonous decisions.
Golden handcuffs.
White always thought he was the smartest person in the room and wanted you to know and acknowledge that.
He thought he was so clever handing out heath bars at Stan's pc.
Agree with Dirk, you let the AD hire coaches - that is their job - there was no need for a committee to do it.
Will never forgot him standing and starting a hog call while an auburn gymnast was starting her beam routine ( a huge faux pas ).
His behavior at gymback events was creepy.

Speaking of creepy, anyone else remember him giving shoulder massages to Marvin Caston on the sidelines during the 1998 season?
What was the real story on Joe Steinmetz ?
This story was front page news until it wasn't.
Just disappeared almost as if someone didn't want any more discussion about it.

Tough for the UofA to overcome Michigan "men" and Thee Ohio State's "they/them".
