Title: MLB Thread - Praise be to the greatness of Ohtani
Post by: buff2.0 on May 10, 2023, 07:59 AM
He has passed Babe Ruth as having the most strikeouts (502) among players with 100+ home runs.

In true Angels fashion, they lost the game to Houston 3-1.

That is really cool.

Meanwhile the Braves are having a fine start to the season.  Of course, all Braves fans realize it is simply to get our hopes up higher than usual before choking things away.
I know this.
I've known it for decades.
I try not to get sucked in, every year.
I am helpless.

That Braves/Orioles series was great (especially the first one). :)
Seriously, those games were great. Looks like my O's are getting there.

Hey, been doing this since 1957, when I first played in organized baseball as a 6 year old.  The Milwaukee Braves, behind 3 game winner Lew Burdette, beat the Yankees in 7.  I was hooked.  Of course, next year they took a 3-1 series lead against the same Yankees, and pissed it away.

Aw well.  It could be worse.

Here is a cool little nugget for you..

How good is the AL East? Yankees are in last .. and are 8.5 games out of first .. and are tied for 5th most wins in baseball

Also, to conserve our ellipse quota I only used 2 periods

I agree with that assessment.

Starting pitching is the weakness right now.  Do you see them dealing some prospect capital (Silent J?) for starters at the deadline?

Eventually they will have to. They have too many to keep. I don't know if that will be this year though. They do have John Means due back (TJ surgery) around the trade deadline. Grayson Rodriguez seems to get better with every start too. You never know what Elias will do though.

There is also this:

When the O's began a series in Atlanta Friday, their rotation ERA was 5.65 for the season. But in the six games versus Atlanta and Tampa Bay, the rotation ERA was 2.41, and five times O's starters allowed two earned runs or fewer.

Oh, the Sox will fall apart. I have no doubt.

It may have started last night. Jansen decided to join the Wheel of Gutless Bums club (a/k/a our bullpen). Spin the wheel, you don't know exactly what you'll get, you just know it will be bad.

Thank God the Cardinals are far away from the AL East.

As bad as they have been they still are only 7.5 out because the leader is only 5 over .500.

This could be one of those years where they get hot at the end but to do anything in the playoffs will require someone not on the current roster.

I can't watch baseball any more, only check the highlights after.  That from a combo of residiual irritation at the BLM shit from 3 years ago plus boredom with 3 outcome baseball.

Shohei's current streaks - 15 hit streak, 22 on base streak, 7 extra base hit streak.

Meanwhile, Ronald freaking Acuna Jr., who plays for a legit team, is the first player in MLB history with 15 HR and 30 SB in the first 70 games of the season.

You have to wonder much longer he can keep it up at such a high level on both sides of the plate. I was listening to an interview with some of his old teammates and coaches back in Japan and one of the coaches thought he might be bulking up too much to maintain his hitting power. Could limit his range of motion and potentially lead to a higher risk of injury on the mound.

There was a situation that developed last night and came to fruition because no one talked about it.

Germain pitched a perfect game for the Yankees on the road against the worst team in baseball last night.

First perfect game since Felix Hernandez in 2012 with the Mariners.

Here we are, just past the half-way point in the season, just before the All Star Break, and the two best teams in their leagues are squaring off for a three game series.

The Braves and The Rays go at it starting tonight.  The Braves are playing really, really well, setting the NL record for HR in a month last month.  I think they are 9-1 for their last 10.  The Rays, meanwhile, have lost 5 in a row and are coming off a day off hoping to regain momentum.

Should be fun.  Both teams hit and pitch well, and the Braves steal bases.

Article said he needed Tommy John surgery, and he's already had it once.  Can you have it done twice?  I know ligaments get weaker and thinner with each procedure.

Anyway, you hate to see this happen to a once in a generation-type player.  Ruthian is what he is.

Walker Buehler, Nathan Eovaldi, & Pete Fairbanks are some current players who have had it twice.

True.  Even if the pitching fades out down the road he's got to go down as an all-time great in that regard.  I bet 10 years from now he'll still be one of the best hitters in baseball if he wants.

Looks like Jerry Reinsdorf is not bluffing about moving the Sox out of Chicago.

Yet another example of MLB trying to fuck over the Braves.

They'll probably add expansion teams in Charlotte and Birmingham just for spite.

Anyone else see the Astros beat the ever loving shit out of the Texas Rangers the last 3 days?

Jose Altuve had 5 home runs in 6 consecutive at bats spanning Monday night through his first 3 at bats Wednesday.

In game 3, Scherzer struck him out to start the game and Rangers fans were like "THANK GOD".  2 batters later, Yoran Alvarez hits a 2 run shot.  Rangers fans cried.

Strider was dominant in his last start against the Phils. I think he'll be fine, just needs to cut down on giving up so many homers. Fried will be his usual self come October. He's only had a few bad innings snowball on him since back. Snit is an idiot if he doesn't save Elder's starts for at home. Much better pitcher at home than on the road. Morton has been great this last month. Hopefully, Wright gets right (see what I did there?) with a few more appearances after coming back from IL.

Just need three starters for the post season, or so the conventional wisdom goes.

This year's team is the best Braves team ever, most likely.  Better than the late 50's juggernauts.  Better than the 90's group with all that pitching.  There is a slugger coming to bat throughout the line-up.  Hell, the C position has already produced 106 RBI and 31 HR. 9 guys have 15 HR, and d'Arnaud may make 10.
4 guys have at least 30 HR and there is a sure bet to make that 5, which I think is a record.

There is a chance every position and the DH has at least 20 HR.  It is ridiculous the year the Braves are having at the plate.  They legitimately have a claim to have the best RF, !b, 3B and C in the NL.  Oh, I know that is up for argument, but a case can be made.

And yet, even though I have followed them for 66 years, I know better than to elevate expectations.  These ARE, after all, The Braves.

Did you see the "throw" by the catcher on steal #69 earlier in the game?

Any of us could have literally gotten closer throwing the ball with our off arms.  And yes, I realize how unathletic we are as a group when I say this.  The ball ended up about where the shortstop normally lines up in the non-shift world as a point of reference, and didn't make it far into the outfield grass.

Braves have a chance to top the HR record for a team in a season.  They need 4 to tie the 2019 Twins at 307, with 4 to play.

Now, you may think, well, there are just a shit ton of HR this season, so big deal, and you may be right.  But, the Braves at 303 are exactly 60 ahead of the Dodgers, who are 11 ahead of the Rangers.

Ah well, the more things change the more they stay the same, right?

I'm talking about our Braves, the mighty .501 record-for-a-team slugging % Braves getting shut the fuck out by the Phillies. 6 Phillies pitchers combined to put the collar on the Braves, the first time they have been shutout at home THIS YEAR.  The old bug a boo came back to bite their ass, batting avg with risp.  Oh fer five, baybee!

The same Phillies that placed 14 games behind them, same as last year.  Speaking of last year, the Phillies are now 4-1 versus the Braves in the last two years in the playoffs.  They lead in runs scored 27-13.

Do I sound frustrated?  Nah.  Just shrug and go on.  Maybe the Braves will come back.

There were a couple of blatantly shitty calls and reviews that went against the Braves that might have made a difference. Granted, I was there and my view was from the jumbotron.  The TV may have showed better angles, although I doubt it.  Murphy's mitt never moved a millimeter during the supposed catcher's interference that led to Philly's final run.  And on Ozzie's stolen base the only replay angle we saw showed that the IF's glove touched the ground first before hitting Ozzie, who was already in contact with the base at that time.  Worst case it should have stayed with the call on the field of safe due to a lack of conclusive evidence.

(Aside here...why in the fuck am I cursed to follow programs that persistently get absolutely ass fucked by their governing bodies?  MLB has a history of cramming it in dry on the Braves, going back to when they forced the Braves to start sharing TBS revenue with the entire league while not doing the same to the Cubs and WGN.  Then you have the Eric Gregg game, the outfield fly, Manprick taking away the all-star game through cowardice, and literally hundreds of replays that mostly go against the Braves.  The only team I follow that doesn't get this is the Cowboys, outside of Gene Steratore and his bullshit assumptions - Dez caught the fucking ball. /rant)

But much more concerning is their inability to hit dogshit pitchers like Ranger fucking Suarez.  Now we get to face Wheeler, Nola, and if we're lucky enough to win one in Philly, Wheeler a second time in game five.  All this after wasting an effort where Strider fucking shoved for seven innings.

NO!!!! Dang them.

Orioles had a good run. Definitely a better season than expected. Next few years should be fun.

This hasn't been verified, but a friend who is usually reliable with his stats stated that the Orioles team ERA was 1.75 points LOWER when McCann was catching. If true, that seems outrageous to me.

The Orioles are set up for a run for sure.  I have a little fondness for Texas since I used to go to games there as a kid, but I was trying to be Switzerland on this one as I have friends who are fans of both teams, plus the Hog connections with the O's.  My only hope was to see the Braves face one or the other of them in the World Series.

If they can get past Philly and AZ/LA, and if Texas can make it, I may try to go to a game down in Arlington if the tickets don't necessitate a mortgage.

Starters have set things to do each day between the days they pitch and I would imagine you need to see live pitching to keep your batting eye sharp.  Of course, I cannot imagine being able to do what either does so I am baffled by all of it.

Wow. Any Rangers fans up in here? It's 10-0 Rangers in the top of the 3rd in Game 4. All 10 runs have come with two outs. Garcia's replacement, 32 yr.old journeyman Travis Jankowski, has been the hero so far.

I'm usually the cynical Rangers observer as I never forgave firing Nolan Ryan.  When Abolis scratched yesterday I thought they'd miss the bat but they stepped up bigly.

The Cardinals didn't do anything over the winter to indicate they are serious about this year.  It costs too much for a family man to take a group to a game more than a couple of times a year.

They have looked OK so far but they did blow a game by playing hideously just like they would do last year.

used to be you could follow the team, follow their development and watch from year to year, now if they don't buy a team each year, just wait until they do.  It is entertainment and watching a loser team blow games is not entertaining.

40% of the teams make the playoffs already.

The TV broadcast structure/availability for MLB is terrible unless you pay for the MLB package.  I used to be able to get all of the Cardinals and Braves game from my standard cable channel lineup.  Now I only get the national ones.

It's also too expensive to take a family of 4 to an MLB game, not to mention I'm not local to any of them so throw in a hotel room as well.  They might do better with attendance with 1) a better product/team and 2) cheaper concessions.

I stated paying for the fan duel app to watch cardinals this year. 20$ a month. If they turn to complete suckage I'll cancel. But so far, no blackouts. I think you can choose a cards/reds package but think the braves are separate one. I don't think it packaged cards and braves. But I'd prefer that.

I've seen the fan duel app.  How has it worked for you?  I've heard mixed reviews as far as streaming quality/buffering, etc.  I need to look into more detail on that.

MLBTv has a "deal" for $30 for all of the MLB games it appears with I think no blackouts.  I just hate not having the games on regional sports networks (Fox Sports South, etc) available for at most $5.99/month for the extra sports package.

Yup. Been here for about a year on the Fayette county side. Was in gtown. We'd had it with Shelby county. But I do like Arlington. Nice area. Hope they continue to be that way with growth.

But I just walked up to the house and noticed the braves were on fan duel. So I guess I was wrong. You can get griz, braves, and cards for 20 a month. Probably only teams I'd really venture out to watch anyways besides college and nfl. Might try to cancel or pause YTTV during summer. Idk.  It's easy and has most everything and dvr and all that. It would be tough.

Hypothetically though, that would be bad to lose a game because a helicopter crashed around 2nd base.

Not sure the park is underrated, it's thought to be of the nicest, but definitely underattended.

Nobody want to talk about how awful the Rockies are? Last night we stayed at the game only because we thought history might be made. 21-0 and the series isn't over. They are always bad but this year they should scrap the entire team and start over

Nobody seems to care much about baseball anymore. Surprised the Rockies are 6-33 bad, which is worse than even the White Sox.

Speaking of which, the man made of glass is back on the shelf.

That, and they probably need to move the team.  Free agent pitchers won't sign there because they don't get the same movement in the thin air.  Even the talented guys they draft underachieve, with the combination of movement and balls flying out of the park regularly.

The stadium on Saturday for that game was half empty. People don't show up to Rockies games for the game they come to booze on the rooftop. It's $4 for entry to the rooftop...that's cheaper than the cheapest ticket at the red birds game.

I've always thought their strategery should be: ground ball/sinker ball pitchers, good infield defense, sluggers in OF, DH and 1B.

A lot of that is because of the lack of talent they have assembled.

Even if it's all overblown, the fact is that pitchers believe it's true.  They still don't want to play there if they have other options.

As much as I hate indoor baseball and plastic "grass", an indoor stadium might be the best way to make baseball viable in Denver.

probably.:::they use a humidor to store balls which in turn makes them heavier and larger. I sometimes wonder how the team makes any money. Tickets are nothing, you can even upgrade from the rooftop or rockpile tickets and sit in a restaurant/bar as long as you sit and order food. They spent tons this past year upgrading food and beverage inside.

The cardinals have pulled me back in this year. They're playing good ball. No stars really other than Arenado, I guess, but they're scrappy and play hard. Had a nice 10 game win streak or so but broke it at Philly but still won that series on the road. Have won the series at KC too tonight. Definitely didn't expect this. Been a few years since I've watched much as they've been uninspiring. Not sure if the subtraction of Goldy had anything to do with it but they're scrappy and seem to have a completely different attitude. Guess winning changes that but theyre on a good run.

Minnesota also riding a 12 or 13 game win streak without much star power. Detroit is still somehow leading the AL central and has the best record in baseball with a similarly built team with little to no stars.

I'm sure it will flip at some point but kinda cool to see the lower payroll teams making some noise.

Fan Duel app. 20 bucks a month, no commitment. Gets the griz, braves, cinci baseball from what I can tell. Only time it's been blacked out was when it was on Apple TV. Has only been one series from what I've seen. I've subscribed to plenty of things for 10-20$ a month and never watched them for months, so it's worth it for me. Not much else after college baseball until football starts.

Pretty incredible first half, especially to come out of relative obscurity. 25 HR's would be amazing for a catcher right now, but 38 is four more than Judge, who is having another historic season. PCA is having a great season and has 25 HR. This guy has 90 total hits and 38 are HR.

MLB draft starts today at 5:00 CT.  I've been looking for a good article for who we should be watching as to where they are drafted and getting them on or back to campus.  I didn't include the 4 or so returning players that will go in the first 3 rounds.  So far this is the best one I've seen.  Includes current players, portal transfers, JUCOs and HS.  My OCD side makes me do a list format.

Returning players:
Iredale
Beetlejuice
Foutch
Justin Thomas
Jimenez
Coil
Bybee

Transfer Portal:
Dylan Grego
Maika Niu
Damian Ruiz
Zack Stewart

JUCO:
Sherman Johnson
Isaac Goddard

HS:
Todd Schaefer
Carson Brumbaugh
McLane Moody
Joey Lorenzini
Jordan Martin
Alexander Peck

Tenn also had a few commitments go early that I'm sure won't make it to campus. Vitello can recruit.

Also, Jiminez went in the 5th round to KC.

Makes sense.  The best overall player on most high school teams is the short stop.  Kinda like Frank Broyles old idea about recruiting high school quarterbacks.  The quarterback, at least in those days, was almost always the best athlete on the field.

Quote from: vegashog on Oct 18, 2025, 11:45 AMwalter johnson was probably the hardest thrower during ruth's time and that was estimated to be around 95 on a good day on a few pitches per game.

the fact that otahni can hit 55 dingers and throw 100mph when he needs to is incredible.

While making it all look effortless.

That actually was probably the first time I've sat and watched him play in a real game. I've seen only highlights and All-Star games.

The worst pitcher in the league right now would have been league MVP 100 years ago.

Imagine how great Ohtani would be if he subsisted on hot dogs and beer with a dash of syphilis.
