That Somalia fiasco always gets me in the feels.  "Black Hawk Down" happened during my first year in. The uniforms, music, jargon, etc all takes me back to 1993. Those troops got jobbed so badly.

Thanks, I don't believe I have ever heard about him.  The hatred towards him expressed by the British would indicate what a renowned badass he was.

Here's a couple I always remember:

Ideals they gave their lives to defend.  The confidence that our God-given freedom can not be taken from us.

Joseph Warren, had he survived the Battle at Bunker Hill (which was actually at Breed's Hill where the redoubts and the militia's final stand would be), could have become the revered founding father that George Washington was and would have likely even become our first President.  If not for Warren and those men who held and died on that hill, we're probably not a country.  The British suffered 1,054 casualties, 226 dead, and too many of those were officers.  They say we're a country founded purely by old white men.  Peter Salem was a black man who fired the shot that killed John Pitcairn - he was a former slave who was released by his owner so that he could choose to fight.

Band of Brothers all day event on AMC today

Recording all the Band of Brothers on yttv for future enjoyment.

Battle of The Bulge is VOD for yttv so that's what I'm watching. I usually watch a few war movies on Memorial weekend. Already watched Objective Burma a few days ago. I watch that movie just for the line at the beginning of the movie where the guy asks what happens if his parachute doesn't deploy. The commanding officer says "you'll be the fist one on the ground".

These doofus networks don't put out much war movie shit like they used to. Not even the super gay stuff like Thin Red Line. No Green Berets, no Patton, no Sands of Iwo Jima. I think Turner Classic Movies is the only one putting out anything. Used to AMC and a few others would have some decent favorties on.

I'm streaming it instead. I can't handle all the commercials. Starting episode 2 now.

One cool tradition at the Naval Academy is that the barracks building (Bancroft Hall) is old as fuck and hasn't changed layout in...forever.  So the rooms that had a MOH recipient in them have a plaque outside their room with the citation on it.  When I was a company commander there as a senior, I made all my plebes go find all of them since that was something I had to do as a plebe and it was good to 1) learn your way around that huge dormitory (largest in the world) and two, gain an appreciation for those that went before you and went through a very similar experience went on to do.  It sucked while doing it, but you sure gain some perspective about the daily suck when you see that these men gave their lives in the most heroic ways possible for our country.  Made chopping and other things we did seem pretty tame in comparison.

Some of the stories were doing their solemn duty to the end, even knowing it meant certain death.  Those were stuff of stiff upper lips and a duty larger than yourself.

THEN, there are others where it seems like some dude was stuck in the muck and had seen the last of his friends turned to hamburger that he was going to take and just went crazy/brave and killed every fucking enemy in sight and probably killed them twice for good measure and then went looking for more enemies to kill just because they were fed up with seeing their friends die and were going to do some killing.  I especially liked those because those things aren't something that is wired into you or hammered into you by training or love of country.  Those were things that just came out in the heat of battle and might have been completely and totally out of character for the guy, but he had seen enough and that shit just came out and he saved a ton of US lives by making the enemy eat a shit sandwich of death.

This guy didn't die, but there are quite a few similar stories where they did.

Great story.  Remembering this just makes me shake my head in annoyance at Americans that are crazy royalist fans.  That whole enterprise of the corrupt Saxe-Gothburg mafia famiky should get the Mussolini treatment.

Rest in Peace, all our heroes.

Rest of y'all be safe and give a thought, if only fleeting, to them.

The Alvin Carey story is truly amazing. Thanks for sharing.

There are surely many many more like it.

Never forget.

This show changed how I look at the world. The "look at me!", "I'm such a victim!", selfie crowd should be forced to watch this shit daily.
