Somebody fill me in. In a rip tide (if that is what caused this) aren't you just supposed to relax, let it take you out and then swim parallel to it? Is there an undertow? And, wish me luck. I am headed to Florida in a couple of weeks. This is horrible. If true, prayers for his family.

Horrible news. He's the best to ever play QB at Arkansas and was set for big things at White Hall.

Damn. I hate this.

I think undertows are possible.  It's easier said than done when it comes to staying calm while you're being pulled away from shore.  Experienced people can recognize it, surfers like to use the currents to get to the waves, but tourists who haven't spent years on the water are oblivious.  At least that's what an old surfer told me one time.

Thanks. I think a lot of people drown trying to save someone by entering a rip tide without a floatable. A boogie board or something similar. Most people fight it and give out.

panic is what gets people in trouble. if you try to swim against it, you'll tire out with a quickness.

you do one of two things, tread water or float to ride it out, they usually give out after a hundred yards or so. or swim perpendicular to the shore, you'll eventually get picked back up by the tide.

Watching Mallett run that offense was the greatest shit ever for my Hog fandom.

Mallett was more fun than Matt Jones and you always knew he was the baller of ballers.  He was fun to watch on the sidelines that year he had to sit out because you could tell he was "IN" and chomping at the bit.  The big arm was epic.  The stories that everyone likes to repeat are epic.  It was good times having Ryan Mallett as the QB and for a brief couple of years, we weren't some plucky underdog anymore but a real team with real talent.

Rest In Peace Ryan Mallett.

Man.

This really does suck.

I was sitting on the 1st row in Athens right in front of where he hit D.J. and then Childs the next play in the "Childs, please" game.

Then the 2 COBI plays later that year.

Then we're down in New Orleans and if Joe Adams catches that first pass that hit him square I think we run their cheating tattoo asses out of the Dome.

I will never forget any of this and am forever grateful to him for what was probably the greatest & most fun season in my lifetime.

He didn't come to paint, men.

RIP to the Legend.

Update: We have confirmation of next of kin notification. The victim is identified as 35-year old Ryan Mallett of Arkansas. We send our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones in his tragic passing.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent drowning that claimed the life of a tourist in the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon.
First responders were called to the beach behind 775 Gulf Shore Drive in Destin around 2:12 p.m.
A group of people in the water near the second sandbar had reportedly been struggling to make their way back to shore.
One of the individuals, an adult male, went under and lifeguards say he was not breathing when pulled out.
Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken but the man was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room.
We do not have confirmation at this time of next of kin notification.

That 2010 team was good enough to win a national title. His td pass to Wingo on the opening drive of the Bama game is still the loudest I've ever heard Razorback stadium get. The LSU game that year might be #1 on my list for football games I have seen in person. I remember going to a spring practice in 2009 watching Mallett pass the ball and being so fucking pumped up. RIP Ryan.

If you are caught in a rip tide swim at a 45 degree angle to the shore, don't panic, and don't swim too hard. Take your time.

There was a DeSoto County Deputy over here that was over water rescue and recovery. He was in Destin a couple of years ago. His two kids were caught in one. He saved them but didn't make it back himself. Something must happen to your brain that causes you to panic. You would have thought he, of all people, would have known what to do.

Damnit, damnit, damnit. Terrible news.

What I loved about watching Ryan Mallett play, besides the epic arm and feathery touch deep balls, was his swagger. No fear. He came to whoop your ass and then tell you about it later, unapologetically.

He and Bobby Petrino were a great combination. Their years were the most fun I've had watching Razorback football as an adult. They didn't top the great teams and players of the '60's, but I was just a kid then.

That pass, and play call, to Joe Adams to start the Sugar Bowl was a thing of beauty, perfection. Sure wish Joe would've caught it. I seem to recall when Ryan was quarterbacking, we got up to #3 in the nation. Game days in Fayetteville were lit.

Thanks for the memories and rest in peace Ryan Mallett.

Look at the ocean, enjoy the beach, swim in a pool.  I've had five friends drown in my life.  One in the Arkansas with his father. A frat brother on the Eleven Point in a canoe (all they found was a jawbone some months later).  One of a asthma attack scuba diving in Beaver.  Two in Florida.  Panic and exhaustion is what usually does it.

Parallel to shore until the current dies out. From every story I've heard down here, that's way easier said than done because of the panic that sets in.

The 4th and 3 pass to Joe Adams against LSU in 2010 was my favorite play by Mallet.  Brilliant call, perfectly executed.

The pass on the first drive in the Sugar Bowl right straight over the middle that was dropped or perhaps very slightly overthrown would have made that game different, in my opinion.  Was that Adams or Jarius Wright or someone else?

You're not wrong.  Your post never will be wrong.  In those two amazing years, every team we lost to was either #1 at that time or #1 at some point in that season.

I remember that Auburn game when Ryan went down on a dirty play, Tyler Wilson came in and lit Auburn's defense up for awhile.  Watching Tyler throw the ball around like he did and then realizing he was only our second-best QB... Ryan was just that much of a baller.  SEC blatantly rigging the games was the only thing that could hold us back, minus that fucking Alabama game.  If 2010 is the peak of Arkansas football in my lifetime, that season will never not make me smile.  Dude threw us back onto the map.

That ball was dropped. Mallet couldn't have walked 35 yards down the field and handed it to Adams any better than he threw it. Adams just dropped it.

I bought the tickets from DRYANKNPULL. She LOVED the atmosphere and had a great time. Wonderful memories.

I think that was the only home game I missed that Mallett played in. Kids were middle school aged and had to stay home to go trick or treating. I used to bet on the hogs some back then, $50 or $100. I think the line on that game was 13. I called my book and said I'll wager all she will take. She had to make a couple of phone calls to make sure she could lay it off. We beat them by 35.

The truth is Mallett was calling Nutt and his staff all the time when he was at Michigan saying he wanted to transfer.  Mallett wanted out of Michigan, and would have transferred to Arkansas whether Nutt or Petrino was the coach.

Being from Texarkana I'm sure you have heard this from reliable people who should know.

I also have an in with a close relative of Ryan's, who assured me at the time and after that this was false...at least the part about transferring here if Nutt was still going to be the coach. Given that the idea of a top passing QB transferring to play for quite possibly the worst offensive mind in the country in a run only offense throwing 10-15 times per game at most seems impossible, I'll go with what I heard.  But who knows which is true.

Regardless, I think we can agree that Nutt is a worthless piece of human debris who never misses an opportunity to make it about himself, even if it means stretching the truth if not outright making shit up.

I have no doubt he said that after he actually transferred.  I have friends who know the family and had kids that were classmates (and teammates at Texas High) who were telling me different at least 3 months before Nutt was run off.  One of them was even a walk on in Fayetteville at the time.  Nutt's assistant coaches called him into their offices more than once to talk about Mallett because he was calling them.

And I have told the story publicly before-- Nutt never offered him a scholarship when he was a senior at Texas High.

I am in no way defending Nutt.  Just saying that there was a lot more going on than that interview captured after the fact.

Just thinking back on his time at Arkansas brings back so many good memories. For me, you can't top going to Athens and Mallett being a cold blooded assassin at the end of the game for the win, and watching him kneel down on the 1 yard line for the win vs LSU at the dump. He and BP made me feel like we belonged with the elite.

But think about this for a second, knowing what we know about Nutt.  If he really had Mallett in the bag to come back here, do you not think that A) he would have bragged (no pun intended) about it incessantly to anyone who would listen or B) he would have used "I have an eleventy star passing QB transferring in from Michigan. Remember the timing.  Nutt was fired shortly after the last game of the year (if I recall, a victory over LSU).  Michigan's last game of the year was about the same time, and Mallett was still getting in games for Michigan.  In fact, he started a game one week during the season for Michigan, and was on the phone the following week with the Arkansas coaches. Mallett couldn't announce a transfer earlier than that.  At that time, we would have been blasted by the NCAA and Michigan for tampering. Heck, I don't remember, Michigan may have had a bowl game in there.   But the die was cast for Nutt before that LSU game.

Florida Sheriff Tommy Ford tore into stubborn beachgoers for not taking heed of warnings noting dangerous water conditions before former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned this week.

Mallett, who played for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, was the victim of rough Panhandle waters, meeting his end at the age of 35 after going under while with a group of people.

Close to a dozen people have drowned in said water body over the past two weeks and, in a lengthy Facebook post, Ford claimed to be frustrated by the needless deaths after having to watch his deputies rescue strangers who ignored the warnings.

He also criticized beachgoers for harassing the folks tasked with keeping them safe.

The Sheriff noted that lifeguards, firefighters, and his deputies have been sworn at and harassed by beachgoers.

"These same heroes, who have risked it all to save others, have been cursed and given the finger, while trying to warn visitors of the life-threatening dangers," he wrote. "We have used the tools provided by the county commission to fine violators $500 for entering the water on double red flags."

Double red flags at a beach signal deadly conditions and indicate that the water is closed, but it appears people are paying very little attention.

"I'm beyond frustrated at the situation that we have with tragic and unnecessary deaths in the Gulf," Ford said. "I have watched while deputies, firefighters, and lifeguards have risked their lives to save strangers. I have seen strangers die trying to save their children and loved ones, including two fathers on Father's Day."

Ford noted that his office does not have the time or resources available to cite everyone but still tries its best to prevent people from going into the water while arresting those who have already been warned.

Well ain't that a tricky article. I found the sheriff's Facebook post and it was June 25. Mallett died June 27.

An ethical, logical article would note the 2-day difference.

This is exactly right. Swimming in the ocean carries life threatening risks.

Issuing swim warnings also come with human judgement and interpretations that are going to have varying degrees of accuracy. I just think it's crappy for the officials to state the next day that there were no dangerous currents when he drowned. Obviously there were and this sounds like a page right out of Jaws right before the 4th of July.

Sharks are way overpopulated in the Gulf now. They are overprotected. Can hardly get a grouper off the bottom now without paying the tax man. I hooked an amberjack last summer that had to be 60 pounds. I don't wanna see the shark that left only the head.

Mallett couldn't announce a transfer earlier than that.  At that time, we would have been blasted by the NCAA and Michigan for tampering. Heck, I don't remember, Michigan may have had a bowl game in there.   But the die was cast for Nutt before that LSU game.

Nutt could've been crowing privately to those who were in control of his fate, without risking a tampering claim.

I won't fight you, but I will respectfully disagree with you.

While in general I agree with your sentiment about personal responsibility, the thing you seem to be leaving out of your argument is the rescuer or first responder.  Seems like a lot of these stories involve young children in trouble, and the one who ends up dying is the parent or bystander that tried to save them.  Its not like they get swept out and think "well I'm fucked" and accept the consequences.  They panic, yell for help, and flail about.  Who could stand by and watch a child drowned?  Even watching an adult drowned, no matter how reckless they may be with their own safety, would take an incredibly hard hearted person.  Putting your life at risk, or allowing your young children to do so, by ignoring warnings about hazardous conditions seems to put others lives at risk as well in most of these situations.

I empathize with the sheriff quoted above.  He's probably dealt with the families of most of these drowning victims personally.  Its got to be emotionally exhausting and incredibly frustrating.

Its hard to say "fuck 'em" when there is a child, or a person trying to save someone in trouble, involved.

I'd have no problem fining or even arresting people that let their kids get in the water when the conditions are bad.  But if you're an adult, and you decide to go in when conditions are bad, or you're an adult, and you decide to try to go in to save another adult who went in knowing the conditions were bad, then fuck you, that's on you.  And believe me, I'm not forgetting the first responders.  I was a paramedic for 23 years.  It's undoubtedly the reason I'm so jaded about this kind of shit.

When it's a minor I think the that's absolutely the case.

When it's not minor it becomes a bit more discretionary depending on the cause of death.

In any case, if the responding LEO didn't notify the family FIRST, in this case his parents because he was unmarried, and instead notified the press, that's very poor form.

There was no apparent foul play, and it looks like a simple drowning.  I get momma Mallets anger at the news reporters, but it should also perhaps be aimed at the local LEO who barely gave her time to contact her mother.

I can see it easily could have been a riptide but since this is a high profile death and there was no warning for it, it's a CYA move to declare it a "simple drowning". But to prove this will be especially difficult.

I don't trust those fucks.

I was in the Galapagos some years ago and went in the water off the back of the boat by myself.  Went down for about 15 minutes without a wetsuit on, the water was about 72 degrees, so I couldn't take a lot.  I was down about 30~ feet and looked back up at the boat and there were probably 100 hammerheads swimming above me.  Couple oceanic black tips (don't trust them either) but it was the first time I've ever seen a hammerhead in person, and I knew fuck-all about them.  I thought they were like toothy dolphins or something.  Swam around with them for about 7-8 minutes and never felt threatened, got out of the water and told our guide and he lost his shit...
I had no idea they were even remotely dangerous.  Apparently they will eat you.🤷🏿♂️

Shoulda posted sooner but they are showing the funeral live on KATV's site. Good, powerful stuff so far. I'm sure they'll have it available for replay.

I thought Ryan's dad died a couple of years ago? That was the consensus on Hogville as they were making fun of Wally and his interview about Ryan.

Yes, Mallett's dad did die a couple of years ago.

The elf went on Finebaum to talk about Mallet. It went as well as you could have expected. I had to turn it off.

yeah...we snorkeled all around there and swam. I've snorkeled a lot of places but that's the most marine life I've seen in one place. As nice as it is here they are poor af.

It makes me sick that we didn't get SCUBA certified before going to Belize.  I'd love to spend a week diving every day along that reef.  Probably going to plan a trip for there in the next year or so...it's an easy enough trip to do on an extended long weekend.

I give zero shits about scuba diving...but snorkeling was awesome. We stayed at Roman's where most of the folks scuba dive out from. The flight from Denver was direct and then 10 min flight from Belize city is easy. I'll def be back.

Duly noted, and moved the remaining conversation to a more appropriate thread.

I normally give zero fucks about anyone's opinions on thread derails, but #15 deserves a little more respect than that.

I was just funning because I saw your post in the other thread. WooPig is WooPig and derails happen no matter the topic. I've already made Rick mad at me. I can't piss you off too.

The high school coach and his agent were pretty good. The preacher was pretty terrible.

I went back last night too and finally listened to the Buzz interviews from the morning after last week on Spotify. I had heard Bobby last week but Tyler, Bequette, & Daly were all really good too. Then there was Nutt...Lord, what a piece of shit. Went back and listened to Bobby again after just to cleanse my palate.

Our old friend Bill Bartholomew put this on Facebook:

At the end of the Day... when the one thing left to focus on is the final journey... Heartfelt tributes matter most among all else being said... Here's one observation I felt stood above the rest at Ryan Mallet's curtain call. Godspeed RM Rest in Peace !

so many takeaways from Ryan Mallett's funeral. Most impressive to me? Three rows full of Razorback Football game day ushers. They were there because of how Ryan and his family treated them. Forget the touchdown passes and record-breaking stats. That's the legacy.

I guess I missed that. That has to make it even harder on Mrs Mallett. I cant imagine losing a child, even if they are grown. I hope she has a great support system and great people around her.

While in Destin I overheard the beach chair guy talking to a vacationer about the drowning deaths this year. He said the one positive is it has brought more awareness to riptides.

If you'd smoked half of what he had, you look petrified too.  Funny thing is, in 60 years, he's still gonna look like this.

While it's still quite awesome, there were 3 rows of Landmark ushers because Debbie Mallett is one of the head ushers. She works most sports and is GameDay leader at softball. The Landmark ushers are like one big family. And it should come as no surprise, I'm friends with all of them including Debbie. When you go to 119 Razorback events over the span of one school year, you end up knowing all of the ushers. 😊
