Probably a good thing we were saved from living through the Kentucky game thread.
Now let's beat Auburn and A&M and get revenge on Kentucky.
Or not, who the frick knows what will happen.
I didn't watch the Kentucky game. Why did Devo get booted?
The game got fired up early. He didn't like a call, voiced that opinion, got T'd up.
Walked back to the bench, then kind of hovered on the Court, still voicing his opinion, and the ref T'd him up again.
I guess he should have just poked the guy in the eye, slapped him, and then elbowed him in the head. That's a common foul.
I was forced to read nobville during the KY game. That was fucking bullshit on its own, but the refs hit us with no Vaseline. Some are disappointed with Muss for not having us as a 1 seed, I'm disappointed that he hasn't gotten a fine or thrown a chair at a ref's face.
Clearly we never paid off the refs this season and it shows. Hunter needs to scratch out a check next season this is bullshit
Quote from: Pighair on Mar 08, 2023, 06:04 AMI didn't watch the Kentucky game. Why did Devo get booted?
Was called for a foul on a moving screen. Devo was just called for a prior foul which was probably legit. He was amped up already and ended up throwing a fit when he was called again. One ref is giving him a couple Ts as the other ref is putting his hand up in the direction of said douche ref and by then it was too late Devo had already mouthed off too much so he was gone. Afterward it is my understanding that Devo said the KY Jelly players were calling him gay names or something like that. I'm guessing because Devo likes to be close to other men...defensively of course.
Fuck Kentucky and fuck the refs.
Fuck the haters.
Fuck losing.
Fuck Auburn
And fuck A&M.
The KY game was horrible. I don't think I fully understood the call when Tshebweight elbowed Mitchel in the head. There was no doubt about it, and they spent five minutes looking at it. It seemed like it wasn't the flagrant 2 because it was a dead ball. If that's the rule, it makes no sense.
Auburn is going to kick our ass

They called a foul on Mitchell resulting in a dead ball. They then called a regular technical foul on Tsebivlisdghfy not a flagrant anything for an international elbow to the head. (So I guess you can just pop a guy in the head as long as it is a dead ball). They then doubled down on stupidity with a tech on AB for a weak ass push. So push = potentially life threatening elbow to the temple in the eyes of SEC refs.
Final tally 2 fouls on Arkansas, 1 on Kentucky for what was probably a flagrant automatic ejection and a week of villain stories about a thug Arkansas program if we had done the same.

I see your typing skills followed you over here. J/k.....glad to see you back.
Finished league play at 8-10, tied for 9th place and apparently we are still in the tournament. It would sure look a lot better if we could win two this weekend.
We won't win another game all year.
I don't know who that color guy was for the KY game, but he obviously hasn't watched many SEC games and/or KY games. He kept saying "That looked like a foul on the KY player", "That looked like goal-tending on KY", oh, that was definitely a foul on KY"....and of course nothing was called on them at all.
Have we ever gone in to the SEC Tournament on a 3 game losing streak?

Okscar Sheetway had one of the most obvious F2s of all time and the refs decided to be weeping gashes instead of doing their jobs. Changed the whole tone of the game.
Still no way that other clown should have out 37 points on us. Devo getting tossed allowed that to happen. No one else could guard Toppin.

If Mitchell had been one inch closer to that POS, it would have cracked his skull. He should have been thrown out. Even the announcers and that idiot ref in the booth were calling for ejection. It also didn't cause him to be eliminated when he had his second flagrant. Then the 9 point play on Devo.
They have to be betting on the games.
We must lead the entire country in fouling guys with our faces too.

I want to say Muss has bitched about that before (shitty student section) so I wonder if this is something that's going to be done to keep him.
Beyond that this doesn't look like earth shattering stuff that's going to take months on end but depends on how much they want to do. Might be something they do over the next few off-seasons. 44 million aint shit though

it's 30 years old and probably needs a refresh. if they can get a chunk of renovation cost back by selling boxes and suites, then that's what will happen even if it means fewer seats.

32% drop in capacity = 32% increase in ticket prices. It's the Razorback way.

As much as I hate Duke, they do their seating right, with the students right on top of the court. That's who the rowdiest fans are.
So this wouldn't even begin for two years (march 2025) ?
Why do they always wait so long?
Shockingly cost will have increased significantly by then 🤷
Quote from: Sus-Scrofa on Mar 14, 2023, 08:26 PMSimply no way they would even consider dropping BWA to 13k. Not going to happen.
I hope not, but it would be going along with the trends. Auburn and Ole Miss both built relatively small new arenas (I realize they don't have the following we do), and Texas decreased capacity in their new arenas as well with a similar set up. Schools are building smaller, not bigger.
More tv eyes means people will not always inconvenience themself to go out.

Quote from: DRYANKNPULL on Mar 20, 2023, 01:05 PMThe REAL story of this season is we made the sweet 16.
Exactly. Drama or not, this did not look like a team capable of getting this far even as recently as two weeks ago.
That these clowns in the media decided to take that great comeback/feelgood story and make it about the drama (which happens to every team to some extent every year) is shameful.
I haven't heard any of the talk about the supposed drama behind the scenes. I did notice I think it was Black and one of the twins jaw jacking at each other going into the locker room at half against Kansas. I was surprised to see that at the time.
it looked like mitchell didn't set the screen for that inbounds play. i think black let him know about it.
These guys have nipped at each other at times all season long. In one of those games they were fighting each other harder than the opponent. It would not at all shock me that there was "drama" in the locker room. It's real easy on a message board to juxtaposition that a certain knee management issue caused some "drama" in the locker room among other things, so I can only imagine that the same occurs among sports writers moonlighting on a message board to get their hot takes. I'm hearing things in my head. Oh yes there it is.
The fact that the "media" pushed this narrative today and the fans have picked up on it is the most Arkansas thing ever.
We have made the Sweet 16 for the third straight year with a good change to advance to the final 8 for the same. Why isn't that the topic the "media" wants to talk about?

To be honest at my age now anything north of 7 wins in football and 22 wins in basketball I'll take. And a sweet 16 appearance? Major success.
As a basketball school we have been to 12 sweet 16s in the last 50 years. Before 3 years ago we hadn't been since 1996.
Eddie had 4 appearances. Nolan, during the pinnacle of success here, had 5. And he and Muss are the only coaches in school history with 3 consecutive.
That's right. The last 3 years have been only accomplished 1 other time here during my lifetime.
I'm thankful that we've had this run. Anybody expecting more just doesn't understand how difficult it is to do what Muss has done.

If any of Black/Walsh/Devo/Brazile/Smith want to stay, you'd be insane not to be happy.
Pinion had his moments and flashed what he can do. Keeper for sure. By the time he's a senior he can be a 15 ppg guy.
Dunning I like. I see him as a Kamani type battler and junk points guy. Muss likes his preparation and scouting ability. He could be the coach on the floor role after Devo. Needs to work on his shooting though.
Ford's future is a bulldog defender and he has great strength obviously for a point guard and likes contact. He has to transition from being the biggest in HS to smallest in college and become a set up guy. Another Corey Beck is his ceiling here.
I wholeheartedly agree with Sus. Any of the trio and Brazile, Davis, Council coming back would be fantastic.
I think they all could use another year to get stronger, esp Smith he needs 15 lbs, and polish up some weaknesses.
pinion got iso run on him as soon as he got in the game. 90% of the time he either got blown by or had to foul.
he's going to have to learn to be 'crafty' or 'cerebral' or whatever words are used for a slow white guy on defense.

I don't think anyone will ever label Pinion as an elite defender.
If Pinion is ever going to get significant playing time, Muss will have to be willing to play zone defense.
There are a lot of teams that have slow white boys and that don't play zone. Pinion, like with Graham, is slow on D. That is true. But, both their adds on the offensive end outweighs the three or four times a game they are going to be beat off the dribble or screen.
If Muss has one bad trait it's that he is going to play his 6 or 7 and if 8 through the end of the bench happens to get in they better not have anything bad happen because they won't play again for games. The bench players don't get the benefit of the doubt or a little grace.

I think he focuses too much on D. A Good defense is great, but you also have to be able to score. Something we couldn't do very well this year.
he doesn't get beat just three or four times a game.
and his per game and 40 minute averages are 5.6 shots made and 5.6 fouls. that's terrible by any metric. he would have to hit like 60% from the field for his offense to outweigh that.
he's not terribly athletic so he needs work on anticipation and not be out of position almost every time someone takes him on the dribble.
Pinion lacks lateral quickness, even for a white guy. I don't think he'll ever be an adequate one on one defender. I just don't see a spot up shooter, who can't create his own shot and is a defensive liability, getting much playing time for this coach.
Muss needs to go get some ballers, that can play some defense, but can score.

not sure, lots of dudes have not meshed well with Altman.
there is not questioning the talent though. The kid has game, he's just like Brazil - can hit 3s and play down low at 7 foot.
Be interesting to know what Nick would tell him about playing for Muss.
Quote from: BASS on Mar 27, 2023, 11:44 AMSo, basically, a whole new team
well we knew that was coming either way when we signed a bunch of one-and-dones.
Brazile will almost surely be back, along with Devo, but Walsh is almost certainly gone. Black and Smith Jr are gone. RCIV is probably gone, too.

leaving the whole hiring fiasco aside, altman has won 70% of his games at oregon and been to five sweet sixteens, including a final four. not sure how anyone can say he has a problem meshing with his players.
ware seems to be a head case that already turned muss down once. who knows what will happen but he if wasn't from arkansas most on here would be saying he's a hard pass.
If we could get Walsh, Devo, and Brazile that would be a damn good group to build around. All three are outstanding defenders to fill around. I think Walsh will turn into a 35% 3pt shooter in time.
Quote from: Happy Hog Fan on Mar 27, 2023, 11:09 AMWere Dusty Hannahs or Rotenei Clark great defenders? Sure would have been nice to have one of those guys on this squad. That's the upside for Pinion but he's gonna have to learn to move on offense.
Hannahs for sure is/was a pretty underrated athlete. Clark could move and defend when he wanted to. I think Pinion could still develop...they'll work on some things. There was a sequence where he was taking the ball to the cup a couple times and looked pretty good athletically doing it so I'm not giving up hope that this cat is a stiff. Pinion to me is a guy that's really not all that comparable to those guys. He's a bigger guard that's going to have to probably get stronger and play a bit more as a forward type.
Not sure if it was in this thread but someone mentioned Dunning being like Kamani...not sure I see that. If you count no shooting as being like Kamani then fine. Otherwise my understanding he's more of a small forward Stacey Augmon type...could really be a lock down defender on the perimeter but may be ass offensively.
Went to see Dunning in the state championship game in Birmingham. Clearly the best player on the floor. Amazingly quick leaper, unselfish to a fault. Got a double double without being the focus of the offense. I thought he might be Derek Hood with a better shot and handle. Sure hope he stays.

Not his fault that he was injured for most of the season, but he has to be the biggest disappointment in the history of UA basketball.
Well...bye.
Thank you, Nick Smith Jr., for all your hard work and effort as a Razorback. Thanks to your parents and the others who allowed you to come back to the team and play after your knee inury. I truly hope that you have a long and successful career in the NBA.
With that being said, I am glad the so-called "Nick Smith Jr. Era" is over.
He played in 17 more basketball games than our #1 all time leading rusher and 11 fewer games than our #9 all time rusher.

Yes it is
Hell yeah!

Brazile being back is huge. It's not terribly unexpected, but it's still important for us.
I wish NSJ luck. I'm glad he came here and I hope he continues to be a great ambassador for Arkansas and the Hogs.
I'm not a scout or an NBA GM but I just don't see spending a lottery pick for him.
I'm not sure NSJ is the even the best guy from Jacksonville on his team. I'd bet on Devo in a 1on1 game between the two of them.
i think davis will declare to get some feedback. probably seeing if he can get a guaranteed 2nd round deal like jwill did.
staying another year isn't going to improve his draft stock. plus he'd be 24 when the 2024 nba season starts. kinda ancient to just be getting started.
Quote from: bigpale on Mar 30, 2023, 03:05 PMSaw some grumbling that Devo might be thinking about declaring. I'd very much like him to stay for one more year.
In a way it makes sense. Devo is a great defender, and a streaky and sometimes wildly unpredictable offensive player. I bet he'd get some try outs based on his defense. Maybe he goes the Patrick Beverley route and ends up being a lockdown defender in the NBA after playing in Europe for a bit. Either way he likely makes a decent paycheck somewhere. Selfishly I'd love to have him back.
I just don't see using a lottery pick on NSJ. He had some flashes, I didn't see the consistency needed to burn a high pick.

JA is one of the best athletes to ever play the game.
Nick Smith's ceiling to me is more like an Allen Iverson type guy. Granted that would be an amazing leap in ability.
30 medical staffs are going to put NSJ through a ringer of tests and exams. We will find out much more about the extent of the knee injury, whether or not it's lingering, etc. That kind of info always gets leaked at the pro level.
But I guess he's not ours to worry about and have drama over anymore. I personally wish him the best and hope he shows out. Former #1 recruit and high-level player in the NBA, the more "Arkansas" gets mentioned, the better for the program moving forward.

I would have everyone on the team (that wants to play pro ball) declare so they can get feedback. Are there any restrictions on who can get feedback? You can always take your name out of the draft.
of course, a lot of these guys are going to end up sitting on the their ass the vast majority of next year but they'll be getting paid no matter how many garbage minutes they play. Which is odd in that what these guys need more than anything at this stage is game minutes. Unless some do like J-Will and spend some time in the G-league. Biggest crap shoot is getting selected by a good franchise and not a shit show one that will break your career.

That's how I see it. He could certainly get better, continue improving as a decision maker but he at this point can do all of those things and then some in the G-league for a couple years. It remains to be seen if he will ever get meaningful NBA time but his defense is good enough in potential that he's certainly going to get a shot.
I do want to hit the portal hard on excellent ball handler/decision makers 3 point shot makers etc.
Getting Brazile back is huge news. Too early to get too hyped up on who's on this team next season but I think maybe we fall back to earth a bit on hype and guys don't enter the season with the big head.

It really depends on your definition of "athlete"...is it actual athleticism, or athleticism + basketball skill?
i.e. Russell Westbrook, in my opinion, is one of the greatest athletic players of all-time. It over-compensates for his average basketball skill. He's historically put up a great stat line, but I think he's a dipshit waste of cap space for the levels he draws for any NBA GM with actual aspirations for a 'ship to mess with.
I agree that both AI and Ja are up there. That AI led his coondog shit-laden Sixers squad to the 2001 Finals, much less won a game against that Lakers team, was a miracle. He took a lot of shit from a lot of fans/media over his "practice" comments and people assuming he didn't care. That motherfucker played his ass off.

After Brazile, probably my favorite returner. I think it was against Georgia where he went absolutely nuts.
Those two on the court at the same time are gonna cause some match up problems.
If they can teach Graham how to play defense he's going to be a real baller for the team.
As far as I know all Pinion did was retweet what some assistant said about "next season" and that's apparently confirmation that Pinion is on board. I figured he was already. Ford's daddy put something about about how Ford has won state championships in Arkansas and wants to win a natty at Arkansas.
At any rate getting several returning players back means this staff knows what they have to work with and can build on that (presumably) and put pieces around them that will make everyone better.
dunning's momma tweeted something to indicate he will be back also. seems these young'uns knew that playing time was going to be pretty slim this past season and are willing to stick around try to earn some minutes.
fwiw mcpherson says the odds of davis returning are not as good as he first thought. he may go overseas if he can't get an nba deal.
I don't know why Davis would come back with the returning crew. No upside for him being "the guy". I love Devo but he is never going to be the guy on any team he plays for outside of one or two games a year.
I suppose landing a couple of really big names from the portal could influence his decision.
With all that said, I would love for him to come back and try to be the guy.

Muss wants us to play fast. We just brought in a guard who is very quick. Muss preaches position less basketball. Muss expects his big to be able to defend 20ft from the basket. None of those things are strengths for Dickinson. He will force us to play a slow down half court pace.

I often wonder if players are seriously considering staying and looking to see what NIL money is available.
A guy like that stays another year he needs a fat deal and an insurance policy to cover injury.
Black COULD bust out and become a top 3 guy with another year, though I think most would think he'd go pro.
He's ALWAYS had a different way of looking at things.
Walsh's size and athleticism as they are, he needs to create. I want to see him take a guy 1 on 1 and blow by them and dunk on them. Once he has a step they're toast.

Holy shit, we just landed Khalif Battle from Temple - averaged 18 PPG, can shoot 3s, star SG.

From 24/7:
Quote12. KHALIF BATTLE, SG: FROM TEMPLE (94)
(Photo: Harvey Levine-OwlsDaily)
Stats: 17.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.8 APG
Khalif Battle is arguably the best bucket-getter in the transfer portal right now. He averaged 17.9 points a game and inflicts his damage at all three levels but particularly the three-point line where he drilled 35-percent of his 8.1 attempts a game this season.
Despite coming off the bench for Temple most of the year, Battle was still able to lead the team in scoring. On 13 occasions, Battle scored more than 20 points this season in 27 games played and his bucket-getting will be a useful tool for whoever lands him next year.

We are getting some certified buckets and a couple of those guys are supposedly excellent defenders. Battle is not a great defender but considered the best shooter we've pulled in thus far. I think we are going hard after the Syracuse big man that stat wise was very productive. So looks like a bit smaller team with better ball handling, good shot making and getting to the line ability. What I see on paper is a team that's going to move and pass a lot better on the court. Obviously with these guards they are bringing in...a guy like Ford isn't in any immediate plans to compete for a rotation spot in case anyone is curious. That's not to say that Ford, Pinion, and Dunning aren't going to improve by leaps and bounds...they very likely will but as it stands now it does appear this staff is getting players that fill starter roles. Battle may be our first off the bench guy...as Muss likes having a guy like that on the team.
Have to wonder what guys like Derrian Ford are thinking. I know we are losing 3 guards, most likely, if you count Devo. But this is the third guard from the transfer portal if I am not mistaken. Have to wonder if he is beginning to doubt his decision to return.

add Blocker to that list and from what I understand he should be good enough to be getting a decent amount of minutes. The other freshman guy is a highly rated player but probably won't play a ton as a freshman barring injuries.

Ford could be the Cory Beck style point guard this team will need. Tough, can score occasionally, and can play D.

McPherson does this stupid bullshit all the time. Every offseason he also has articles prepared on all of our players in case they leave. Accidentally posted them all at once last year.
Mark, Battle, Davenport: Hard to deny Muss has done amazing work getting transfers in here this year. We've traded a bunch of young talent (that was never going to reach their potential here before jetting to the NBA) for more experienced transfers who can bring instant size and skill.
Battle averaged 18 a game last year where he mainly came off the bench. His numbers from the previous year before he was injured were 21pts per and shooting 50% from 3. Kid can make tough shots too. He and Menifield are gifted scorers.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36224467/nba-nbpa-memo-outlines-new-nba-draft-selection-requirements
ESPN reports that starting in 2024, all invited players will be required to attend and participate in the NBA draft combine or be ineligible to be drafted until the "first subsequent draft for which the player attends and fully participates." It's part of the new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the players' union, which could limit the overall number of players willing to test the draft waters.

I wish him all the best at his next stop unless it's a school we play regularly, and then I wish him well when it doesn't harm Arkansas. From all indications he gave his best effort here.
Kid was always razorback through and through, probably not his choice.
He was just on one of the Buzz shows yesterday and gave a great interview. Talked about his plans for the offseason and next year...and how he was ready to compete with the incoming transfers. Seems like a genuine guy. Leads me to believe Muss got somebody new in the portal yesterday.
Sure hope it means we're getting that Texas Tech transfer.
Muss better tread carefully with in state kids.
I hate it for the guy. I think he will make an excellent bb player but he's probably another year away from being a major contributor on the Arkansas roster. I'm hoping some of these guys that got bounced from this roster can go elsewhere and prove themselves and have a chance to come back akin to what happened with Jimmy Whitt. Hopefully that's part of the sales pitch to guys that didn't know they were portaling until this staff told them to.
This staff is really going to a higher level of running it like a G-league/pro sports team where guys are getting cut.

This one leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The kid was all Hog and seemed like a Devo clone with his reported work ethic. With that being said, one thing that will help wash this taste out is winning and Muss has proven he knows how to build toward a desired goal quickly.
It sucks for the kids, but as soon as the powers that be made it OK for them to get paid for play, they became professional athletes (or at least paid interns). This comes with the territory. The kid apparently handled it with class, though. Let's see if his family handles it the same way. Wasn't his uncle talking a bit of trash during the season? Regardless, I hope he lands on his feet and excels wherever he goes.
Shame, I was looking forward to seeing Ford with some more development and experience.

If they're good enough to contribute now then great. If not, he's going to find the ones who can. The transfer portal has changed the game.
smith, walsh, and black all committed late in the process. who's to say if they had committed earlier, that dunning, ford, and pinion wouldn't have been replaced by portal guys.
it would be a paradigm shift in thinking, but if i'm a kid rated in the 50 - 70 range, maybe going to a good mid-major and showing out for a year, maybe two, would get me to a flagship school without the risk of sitting on the bench and using up my transfer to end up at that type of program anyway.

While I agree it's not a good look at the end of the day it's all about the win column. You put up W's and people overlook the part where you dumped a home grown kid in order to bring in some other guy you think may help your team.

All teams utilize the portal, yes, but they don't completely turn over the roster year-to-year like Muss does.
Look at UConn. 85 percent of their roster was guys they recruited out of high school/prep school. Only Calcaterra and Alleyne contributed out of the portal.

Rumor has it that his horse riding announcement was not premature having not sat down and discussed future with the coaching staff first.
The portal is a weird deal to me. You have guys hit the portal. Does that mean they weren't good enough to get playing time at the school they are transferring from or they were good and just want another team? If they aren't good enough to get time with a school, what makes you think they will be good enough if you get them? Isn't it kind of hit or miss...like the same thing that happens when you get a 5* HS kid who turns into a bust at the college level? I realize some transfers help a lot, but not all of them. Seems like most NC winners had guys stay and play together 3-4 years. Now the one and dones are taking over.

Look at UConn. 85 percent of their roster was guys they recruited out of high school/prep school. Only Calcaterra and Alleyne contributed out of the portal.
Same with Kansas the year before. Remy Martin was only contributor out of the portal. Baylor in '21, they were the one team in the portal era that predominantly had portal guys contributing heavily.
I am afraid this is the correct analysis. Teams with high turnover may win a lot of games for a year, but they will seldom if ever win a National Championship. Just look at Kentucky, even before the portal, with all their one-and-dones. He may get them to the NBA, but I want to win another NC.
Quote from: HughJasole on Apr 27, 2023, 05:11 PMYeah but 2 out of 3 champions weren't portal-heavy. Muss has a proven formula, yes, but it would help to have some continuity on the roster as well. Other than Devo he hasn't returned anyone hardly.
It's not his fault 3 freshmen went pro. :)
Quote from: Son of Spam on Apr 27, 2023, 05:26 PMThe portal is a weird deal to me.
It's a mixed bag. For the vast majority of these guys it's about finding a better opportunity for playing time. For some it may be a cash grab now days with some back channel talk suggesting to a kid that he could get paid bigly by jumping in the portal (some do, many do not), others are coming from smaller situations where they excelled and are getting a chance to do it at the highest level.
I think the main thing we are seeing is both the roster management and player's perspective is treating this like it's free agency. Our staff is very much comfortable in throwing together a mini G-league team each season. Football is obviously far more hit and miss, if someone like Deion proves you can flip the fuck out of a roster in one off-season then it's going to turn this shit on it's ear in a hurry.
Everyone says "Muss has a system" and I agree. Not really sure what that system is designed to do, though. Win a national championship or put a lot of players in the pros?
I'm not a Muss hater so don't bother with that shit. I just think that is a legitimate question.

Exactly. It's like some of you all of a sudden want us to recruit shittier players so they won't leave immediately. But then you also can't accept that the "shittier" players (which are still top 100 guys) aren't getting PT b/c Muss can bring in a few better, immediate contributor guys from the portal every offseason. Pick a fucking lane.
It's his job to put the best product he can on the floor from one year to the next. It's a brave new world out there. And no he hasn't won a championship yet but he's damn well sure navigating this as well as anybody else.

Yeah, it's crazy I know. But in this day and age, a coach doesn't have long to prove himself. I am certainly in favor of giving Muss more time don't get me wrong. But from a long range standpoint, you have to consider where the college game is and how to get to the top.

But with any system its still gonna be hard to win a championship
@jdcatty Just admit you stepped in #2 and leave it at that. Your argument is just stupid.
@ALL
There are over 300 schools that are technically eligible to win a natty each season. Out of those 300 it's more realistically 150 schools with a snow balls chance. Still that's a huge number compared to 20 or 30 years ago where there wasn't nearly as much parity. In those days if you weren't a TOP 25 school early in the season you probably weren't shit. That's not to say there wasn't outliers that came along and won it all. I'm sure there was. NC State maybe? That was before I was old enough to remember. System and culture is a huge deal sure...but this is an ever changing landscape of college athletics and the coaches are adjusting as well as the players with their new found freedom.
With the G-league mentality you are probably largely coaching a new group of guys each season. It forces coaches to be creative with roster management and coaching technique. That's the mentality and approach Muss has brought to the Razorbacks with the caveat that he pretty much can be the GM and bring in positions of need and the types of players he thinks he can win with. I don't know what's going on...if I had to guess Muss has walked it back to where he feels he's got a better chance to go deep. Just because he can bring in a bunch of Diaper Dandy's doesn't mean he should. Over the course of the next few seasons perhaps he brings in a couple top tier freshman and continues to mix in with the transfer market.
It's been at the expense of players he had to know were 3 or 4 year guys aka not necessarily pro prospects. I think it stinks but at the end of the day there wasn't much about Dunning or Ford that just jumped out at me. I think both could be eventual good if not great in college. That doesn't mean they get to take up space on the roster. It's shitty but that's just the way it is I guess.
I know like many here I grew up loving to watch college sports not just because of the immediate entertainment of it but as I got older I got to enjoy watching players grow up within the system. Sadly it appears those days are over. If you could guarantee a deep run every 4 or 5 years with rosters loaded with multi-year in-house players I think most would be happy. The current day environment means players are gonna nope out at some point...thems the odds. If you could virtually guarantee roster flips every season means deep runs every season...most people are gonna take that option even if it smells a little on the odds one of these teams fucks around and wins the whole fuckin thing.

I am just asking questions. But I guess public discourse on these issues are not allowed by some, including you.
But the "taking up space on the roster" argument is really interesting, considering what we just went through with NSJ.
The part I find most interesting is Muss's rotation and how he manages his roster. We know he's gonna primarily play 8-9 guys. You would think having quality young kids fill 10-13 and have them develop into his system would be a plus.
I'm not knocking Muss. I hate to see us lose quality in state kids, but I hate seeing us lose games far more. My only point is he builds his roster a bit differently than he manages it.

Get out of my head. I was just thinking alongside those same lines this morning. I would think there could be room for two developmental type guys on the bench each year to help ease the transition 2-3 years down the road. Especially if only 9 are going to see any meaningful playing time. I mean I guess fear of injuries might push you to stack the bench with a couple dependable, veteran transfers, but that would still leave room for guys like Ford and Dunning.
Side note, I think I would rather have kept Ford than Pinion. I know that's tantamount to blasphemy, but I liked Ford's mentality (seems to have that dog in him) and work ethic. Pinion might prove to be an all world scorer at some point, but last year he just proved he knew how to stand in a corner real still like and be a liability on defense.

For what it's worth, the scout I was sitting next to at the Violation in Vegas was raving about him. Said he is the type of guy you put on your team to elevate everyone around him. Loved his size, motor, and court vision (despite the to's). Then he went on to grab 5 steals. Guys paid a lot to make sure their teams win seem to think the kid is a can't miss talent right now and is nowhere near his ceiling.

I don't believe so because he is still listed as eligible to return. Him & Devo both. Walsh has been all over draft slots in the mock drafts and not at all in some too. Devo won't get drafted but I don't know that he has much room to improve his stock by coming back. He's probably destined to be a G League journeyman or European league guy. Muss probably wants him back for the experience and leadership, but I figure he would be upfront with him about his pro prospects at this point.
Anyway...either Walsh or Devo have to go to make room for Holland. Unless they both really want back in...then I reckon Pinion is the odd man out.

So these are the dates to keep in mind:
May 3rd: Transfer portal closes
May 16-18: NBA combine
May 17th: Final signing day for high school recruits
May 31st: Last day to remove name from NBA draft pool
That's a lot to balance for the last 1-2 roster spots (currently 11 scheduled to be on scholarship without counting the players testing waters). Holland (if he is, as some reports state, in play for us) could throw a wrench into Walsh's/Devo's plans if they both consider coming back after the signing window closes. However, there may not even be a spot for him if two highly regarded transfers come in first. Maybe Muss pulls the trigger on one transfer if he fits his needs/goals for the team, but if a second expresses interest? If he does in fact take a second from the portal, you have to think everything is locked in at that point. Lot of moving pieces that would make me lose what little hair I have left. Not sure how Muss hasn't had multiple coronaries by now.

Really does surprise me, he's an elite defender.
He needs to come back and live in the gym shooting 3s.
Devo is an elite college defender.
Professional players are bigger and all have "Devo" quickness.
He isn't a shot creator, doesn't shoot well, doesn't move well without the ball, isn't a rebounder and is thin/small. Edit: he also is good for a few WTF turnovers during a game.
It isn't surprising to me that he wasn't invited.
Devo will make good money playing in Israel or someplace like that.
no shame in that, he will blow by my life savings soon enough
If Mason Jones can't sniff the NBA after balling out in the G-league all season I just don't know what to say. To my eyes I'll take Jones over some of these guys being talked about as high draft selections. I realize potential potential potential. Yeah I'll take Jones
Davis is about Pbev's size...maybe a bit taller. I think he's listed at 6-4/195 area...he's not tiny though if he's an off-guard he would be consistently going against guys that are much larger. I don't think he's got draft value because he really hasn't mastered much of his game as an older dude and probably just isn't good enough even for the G-league and may never be. Other than the "5th grade defense" what does he really do well? He's got that dog in him? Good rebounder at the guard position in college? That actually helped Patrick Beverly a bunch when he broke into the league.
Yes Devo has improved a great deal and another year of college ball could help him but it's not likely to make much difference in terms of the NBA draft. Consistency is the only thing that's going to help him moving forward and he's probably not suddenly going to become a NBA quality ball handler, shot creator/maker, and like others have said defensively is he really that much better than many other guys that can do those other things? Probably not.
He could still get into summer league camp and end up impressing enough to get a invite to either a G-league camp or NBA camp for preseason. Again if he's going to be a utilitarian type guy that "does the little things" he's got to at least not fuck up 4 or 5 times a game to wash all of that out. Very unlikely he's getting drafted though...I'm thinking he's got to go overseas and make a good living showing flashes.

I really think that I am most interested in watching him develop as a pro. He was a baby giraffe on arrival. He is gonna grow into himself and be really good.
If he's a high pick, he needs to go. The baby giraffe is accurate. I think he's going to turn out to be a solid NBA player.

Different sport yes, but if the latest example of Anthony Richardson has taught us anything, owners will drool over freakish athletic ability.
Walsh still likely to get drafted in the 2nd at worst.
I kinda figure Walsh will be a late first, go to a playoff team and spend a few years being a two-way to the G-league on an otherwise good roster. It's a good thing now days because a lot of load management going around so rookies and 2nd year players tend to get minutes during the season.
I'm not really hearing shit about NSJ's stock rising or falling. People seem to be gushing about Anthony Black.

We probably won't know anything till closer to the end of the month. Texas is withholding his release from the LOI. They have 30 days from his request to authorize it or deny (which puts it right around May 31). After that, he can appeal to the NCAA. Though at that point he would probably just say screw it and go G-league.
Most talking heads have him as a hard Hog lean (great name for a band by the way).

It's disappointing having a lottery pick and other draftees yet having an extremely mediocre season. The Kansas victory was literally the only main highlight and Sweet Sixteen isn't too bad, but the results did not match the talent. I guess Kentucky has been doing it for years.

Pretty sure they're thinking more about hurting us (or any team looking to court him) by making us hold a spot while the top end of the portal dries up. Also they might figure that other teams won't keep waiting and he will be forced to either stay with them or go gleague.
there's not a team out there that wouldn't wait for holland if they knew he was interested in them. you wait for the #1 player in the class.
texass has their 30 days to throw a shitload of nil money at him and try to get a better roster together (i read that's the reason he wanted out). if they don't release him he will win the appeal. they cannot force him to stay.
since he could have gone to the g-league at any time, my bet is he will play for muss.

So when will wr find out about Holland?
Quote from: HOGSRUNWILD on May 30, 2023, 04:19 PMSo when will wr find out about Holland?
Holland could go straight up G-league right out of the box and skip college. I imagine he's weighing his options and it's also possible that there is more to his leaving Texas that's causing some red flags? IDK. I would say something stupid like we are waiting to find out if some returning players are coming back. I think you have to give Devo or Walsh their spots back.
Devo Davis supposedly visited the Bucks today or yesterday as reportedly a potential 2-way player (personally that sounds like bullshit) and now someone is saying he's probably coming back. I don't want to slam the door on Devo but I can't feature him improving leaps and bounds...he would be better off moving into the professional ranks at this point but on the other hand sure it would be great to see a guy be a 4 year player these days.
I think Davis is more likely not a 2-way player right off. I think he's a guy that will likely have to earn that in the Summer league and probably in the preseason camp as well. That's why this recent report about the Bucks looking at him as a 2-way player sounds like b.s. to me. He's not getting drafted, wasn't invited to the recent combine. He's a summer league undrafted player that will get a shot but that's about where it ends. His next stop could be overseas somewhere...
Once again...Mason Jones is lighting it up in the G-league but can't sniff the NBA. Jones is far and away better than some of these guys that are being looked at as high draft picks.
I think Walsh could come back and end up earning a high draft position next season but then again he could come back and only marginally improve and find himself outside the draft all together. That's part of betting on yourself. He's got freak athletic ability on a team that once again should feature some really great athletes. Walsh has to work on the basketball plays that he's going to have to nail down in order to stay in the league. That's really the bottom line with him. He's raw and might develop into something really good in a couple years.

I didn't take it as trashing Muss, I took it as he's ready to take his game to the next level outside the conforms of college ball. You could see his progression as the year went on. Once again, HTL is sensationalizing something that doesn't really need to be. Here are his full quotes.
"This was a super hard decision, with Arkansas being home for me, but ultimately I chose my dream," Walsh said. "I'm betting on myself and taking the chance that I can grind it out and produce at the level I should be. Being able to know what the process will look like, I can come out successfully."
"Once I got out of Arkansas, I'm now in a position where I don't have handcuffs on me," the 6-foot-7 Walsh said. "I'm able to shoot and make plays for people. I have that flexibility to show that I can do all those things. I was stuck in a role, but now they'll see the real Jordan. That was a small glimpse of me at the combine."
"I feel like the foundation of my game will be a 3 and D player," Walsh said. "Having 50 percent of that done will catapult me into the type of career that I want and can see for myself."

Yeah, I don't think anyone can look at that and see it as a good thing for us. But hey, another kid going pro. Hopefully he makes it and Muss can point to him as another example of putting kids through to the next level.
Because nobody at the professional level is ever asked to play a "role" and they are never handcuffed when they repeatedly piss down their legs when shooting the ball or tripping over their dick.
It was a dumb comment but I doubt Muss really gives a shit especially a kid talking his game up going into the draft.
But just to let the kid in on a little secret. I doubt Muss would have "handcuffed" him if he were ready and capable of producing far more. He wasn't. Maybe he is now.

Yes, and also that "being held back in college" is more a legitimate complaint for, say, a Michael Jordan, than for a mid talent who couldn't stop from fouling for 3/4 of the year.

On another note it sounds like Devo consumed Hollands NIL deal so he went to the g league.
Walsh wasn't good enough for us to handcuff somebody else for his benefit. He could get better but not this past year.
Quote from: BleedinRed on Jun 02, 2023, 10:24 AMWe will never hear from Black or Walsh again. Neither are going to be anything more than a few years in the league as 8th or 9th options off the bench.

I hear you and everyone else who likes Blacks game. I just don't see it. I'm probably definitely wrong.
He can't shoot off the dribble, he isn't a good spot up shooter. He isn't overly quick. He can't get to the hole reliably and when he does drive he doesn't have great vision to find the open guy. His defense is okay but against smaller guards he struggles.
Other than being tall I just don't see much to get excited about.
I'm not trying to be all HTL here and have no qualms with being proven wrong. Hope I am.

I think Black will do well. I'm not saying he'll be an all-star or maybe even perennial starter, but people, especially scorers, will like playing with him and that will keep him around for a while. No he can't shoot and may not even get a 3 off in the league with his slow release. He will be able to score on smaller guards and at other times when called on as evidenced by Maui and a couple late season must wins. He's going to go high so it's going to be a shit team but my guess is he shows who he is with his 2nd contract.
I think Smith has more than a cup of coffee up there too because he does many things well. If he's as good as once thought, then it's obvious. If he's not...he still has a versatile skill set and can specialize for whatever his given team may need.
Walsh is a wild card. Two inches taller and he would have something.
Council is a great athlete and was fun to watch. I wish he was coming back as a wide receiver. KJ: "I don't know, Ricky down there somewhere" etc. Ceiling is probably a Sonny Weems Euro career.

Current ESPN projected starting lineup is:
Keyon 6'1"

Devo 6'4"
Tramon 6'5"
Trevon 6'10"
Mitchell should obviously be in that mix, and even so that lineup wins a lot of games, but we are one injury of a big from running into the wrong team in the tournament ala Duke last year.

It was basically a team that was a legit Sweet 16 team that ran into a buzz saw. I never got the feeling this bunch was as good as the year prior. Talented as hell and could have been a super special group had they all returned but we all knew that wasn't happening. We had the talent but the team from the prior year had many intangibles that were just flat missing this past season. Some of that was significantly hurt by the injuries and some of it was simply because this team was baby shit soft in the early going and wildly inconsistent at times.
I found it puzzling why we took in that big haul of freshman and then in stead of trying to keep and develop them basically tell them to pound sand and went and got us some portal guys that figure to give better production. That's the reality of roster management. A guy like Brazile was penciled in as a guy that probably was only going to be a hog for a season and bounce. He got hurt and now his back for another season. That took a spot on the team but no question you make that call. Kinda the same deal with Devo who has certainly earned the right to come back.
I really like the group we are bringing in. Mark, Devo, and Brazile are elite defenders. Ellis, Battle, Minefield, and Brazile are proven scorers.. Ellis, Minifield and Blocker can handle the point. I think Brazile, Ellis, Battle, Minefield, and Davenport are capable of shooting 35%+ from three.

I was surprised the UCONN big didn't get drafted but I guess he's only 6ft 8 and doesn't have much of a perimeter game. At any rate he was among the best players in the tournament. I think the Timme guy is in that same boat of not having much of a perimeter game and probably doesn't translate as a "stretch 4" or whatever the cool kids call it these days. I think Menifield is gonna be a really good player but we have a lot of depth at his position. I don't believe Chris Johnson ever recommitted anywhere. He would be a really good replacement. We were in his final list.

imo neither blocker or minifield would have started beginning of the season. davis, mark, davenport, battle, and ellis, have played in 396 games, and started 224 between them.
after having to play a bunch of freshmen last year, i can see muss going with experience to start off unless all those guys suck.
I think Minifield would've provided a punch off the bench. Kid can really score. I think we have plenty to overcome the loss. Blockers mins will be dictated on how well he takes care of the ball. Kid can defend and plays unselfish on the offensive end.
