Oher claims it was all a lie, and the Tuohys owe him money.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38190720/blind-side-subject-michael-oher-alleges-adoption-was-lie-family-took-all-film-proceeds
Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense.
Here's my shocked face.
"Based on a true Story," is all that has to be said.
I read the complaint. It's certainly creatively written, it'll be interesting to hear both sides.
The complaint noticeably doesn't say anything about the last ten years of his life and why it took him so long to bring this lawsuit.
They are ole miss grads, why would you expect any different?
White people taking advantage of the black man.

Supposedly he just found out that the rest of the Tuohy family got paid for the movie.
Color me shocked that a family full of Ole Miss alums would try to profit off a black man without paying him.
Some of us (probably most on here) saw this for what it was when the world was sucking Leigh Anne's dick for being philanthropic. It's not about them enriching themselves...Sean is loaded anyway. It was all about delivering Ole Miss the kind of player they would never get on their own merits, in a somewhat legal manner.
If there is any justice Sean's good buddy (and I think Oher's agent) fat fuck Sexton will be exposed for fucking over a client and end up sucking cocks under the old bridge in Memphis for Mac and cheese money.

well apparently they never adopted him legally per the lawsuit. They just got him to turn over into a conservatorship so they could profit off his ass. Seems pretty fucking shitty if this is true. Wouldn't be surprised. Not sure why now he's bringing this at 37....I assume because the nfl big money has done run out and he's jobless?

The article made it sound like he wasn't really worried as much about the money as he was upset about finding out the family straight up used him while promising him a family that he never got. The newly discovered conservatorship in lieu of adoption was the final straw. "You can draw up papers to take my money, but not any to make me your son." Pretty screwed up.

I think the confusion is that the complaint reads like the conservatorship has been in place this whole time.
That can't be true. He's had an NFL career, endorsements, etc.
If it's just about the money they made from the story behind the book and movie, that's fine, just not sure how it took him this long to realize the financial arrangement. Surely his lawyer/agent/someone in the last decade-plus asked him how much money he saw out of the deal.

yeah who knows however Leigh Ann has her foundation and has been using Michael's image and name to promote it for years. That can't look good.
Also, sounds to me like instead of adopting him they chose the conservatorship...perhaps cause they didn't trust him at his age to be financially sound to make decisions about his career ect. Will be interesting to see if they profited at all or paid themselves a conservatorship salary during those times and why they didn't give him any profits from the book the movie was based on.

IF the allegations are true, the fact that he was never legally adopted is shocking, given everything Ive been lead to believe. It also sounds like Oher was led to believe that as well. Isn't that the premise of the story? Hard working white folks adopt a poor black child, who then turns into football greatness?
Add to that, they not only didn't legally adopt him, the Tuohys then had him sign over conservatorship after he turned 18, on the cusp of an NFL contract and movie deal.
They may skate in court, but the optics look very shady. Like they found their mule and hitched their wagon to it, shady.

Part of the issue is the media is mostly sports and entertainment doofuses looking for a salacious story of black boy exploited by evil white folks, a dark turn to a successful feel good story, on and on.
I think when the legal folks do a deep five it will be a far drier story. I don't think the Tuohys took this kid in with an idea it would make a great book and movie and they'd exploit this kid.
I think the real story will be rooted in then strict NCAA rules and trying to maintain other's eligibility. He was 18 while still at Briarcrest which complicated things. He couldn't be formally adopted as he was 18, while adult adoption only conveys inheritance without financial responsibilities so ncaa has an issue there. The conservatorship seems to be the toll they came up with. Tuohy was a "booster" in the eyes of the ncaa and under scrutiny.
Now Leigh Anne has been touting this as an adoption all along so that might get messy for her foundation.
The worst part of the movie: they cut the hot fuck scene with Sandra bullick and Kim Pickens.

I agree with you that the Tuohy's probably didn't think far enough ahead to try to craft a story for profit.
They 100% did all this with the intention of steering Oher, who otherwise would have likely gone to a football factory like Alabama or (at the time) Tennessee, to their beloved Ole Miss. It was all about getting their alma mater a recruit that wouldn't have even given them so much as an unofficial visit on the school's own merits.
The book and later movie deals simply came about because Michael Lewis and Sean Tuohy were longtime friends from New Orleans.
Michael Lewis...Tuohy's, SBF, factual inaccuracies in Flash Boys. Hmmm
Correct me if I'm wrong here but Oher wasn't playing football when the Tuohy's met him. I don't believe he was really going to school much at all.
Am I to believe that Momma Touhy saw a large, possibly fat, black kid and had the foresight to see what would be a highly desired recruit and future NFL pro and she planned all this out so Ole Miss could have said kid on the fooseball team?

We contacted lawyers who had told us that we couldn't adopt over the age of 18; the only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship. We were so concerned it was on the up-and-up that we made sure the biological mother came to court."
Tuohy maintains that he was advised that he was not able to adopt Oher as he was over the age of 18 but current laws in Tennessee do allow for "adult adoption," adding that if Oher wants to end the conservatorship they would end it.

He was already at the private school he had no business being at prior to meeting the Touys or was he lived with the Touys and they got him into the school and then they adopted him.

Who is saying the Tuohys got him into Briarcrest? Besides the movie, which is apparently bullshit.
Sean Tuohy is now speaking out saying he's insulted by the lawsuit. Why is it that Michael didn't know what he signed till after Feb 2023? Seems like the conservatorship came about because of age and him going to ole miss as they were boosters and it was the only way. He says he never saw any money from movie but they indeed profited from the movie and their likeness I assume. The foundation she has uses his name all the time and did they not get anything from the book or movie...really?

they promoted adoption at least Leigh Ann did for years when establishing her foundation which is for underprivileged children and spent years encouraging people to consider adoption based on her own life. They've enriched their lives based on essentially a lie and gained tons of donations to their foundation based on that lie. Look at her IG...she posts a child every week who needs a home and does so based on the platform the movie and book gave her.

I liked Wilson's comments. Tuohy said oher tried to shake them down for $15m. He knew he wasn't adopted way back as he explained in his final est book.
The folks not wanting to see a trial is Hollywood because it will expose the bullshit of Hollywood cost accounting. Lucas still claims return of the Jedi has yet to make a penny of profit. After a billion + in rev. Stan Lee never got a dime for Spider-Man movies with huge revenues.
I'd like to see a real timeline of the time he came into the home, conservatorship, the book, the movie, his draft etc. I think media is merging it all together and it's a long string. I think the tuohys had a legit commitment to adoption and had the most interest in getting him in OL Miss without getting an ncaa hammer as he was a "booster".

Her whole demeanor was of a Royal bitch and her description of Nutt was the same. Fuck her and Nutt. Theirs is no doubt that they manipulated a child and a system for their own benefit and for that of a high school and their college. I'm not saying they didn't help him tremendously, but there was always another agenda, and the top of that agenda was inflating their egos.
That being said, this sounds like a cry baby victim deal that Oher is using to shake them down for some cash, so fuck him too.
And fuck Old Miss.
And fuck Nutt.
All I have to add, is that if they really adopted him and treated him like a son, that had obviously fallen apart at some point way before this. It wasn't like he was hanging out over there for Christmas this year and then dropped this in August.

I thought about that when reading all the thread. I hope someone brings it up during the touchdown club speech and Razorback Hall of Fame ceremony.

Yep, to ALL of that.
I'm just here for the Ole Miss bashing, and thoroughly enjoying this thread.
I can't wait for the Game Day poster boards.
A few thoughts:
1. I believe the Tuohys first motive was to help a good football player get to their beloved school to make Ole Miss better in football. (I hate Ole Miss sports)
2. I believe their second motive was to help a poor young man and make a good story that holds their name in a good light in the community.
3. They never needed money. Sean Tuohy sold his company for $213 million.
4. As far as the ability to put together a legal team, the Tuohys have more "F.U. money" than anyone in the mid-south. Their daughter married Fred Smith's son. I noticed Steve Farese on the legal team yesterday on the news.
5. Sean Tuohy said that they received a fee for the book rights and split it 5 ways between Oher and the 4 Tuohys.
6. If this is indeed a shakedown, they should run the entire legal marathon and make Michael Oher go the distance.
7. Whoever noted the similarities with the Colin Kapernick story nailed it.

Why maintain the conservatorship for more than a decade after this admitted estrangement?
Quote from: Hogworth Ballington III on Aug 17, 2023, 10:28 AMWhy maintain the conservatorship for more than a decade after this admitted estrangement?
yeah why at 37 plus is he still in a conservatorship. Why wasn't that ended long ago after he was done with college. Were the tuohys involved in any of his nfl career and decisions
Creepy SJ got $250k plus 2.5% of net proceeds on a film that likely cleared $350mm on a $29mn budget.
- if it were me (Tuohy)
- if they're rich
- if they will not have a relationship with him any more (due to the desires of one side of another, if any family tie is dead)
I would cut the guy a check and get this out of the news ASAP. Right or wrong I wouldn't want my name dragged through the national media mud for any longer than necessary.
Doesn't look well that Oher mentions the Tuohys as conservators three times in his book. I guess all those head injuries made him forget that along with the 100k he got from the book/movie shit. At the end of the day I'm guessing all parties involved on both sides are complete pieces of shit.

I don't think the Tuohys went into this intending to profit financially off of Oher.
Most likely the conservatorship never ended because no one thought about it after he was out of the house and in the NFL.
Their initial motivation was almost certainly focused on one thing...getting Mike to Ole Miss. If he benefitted from it, and I'm sure he did, great, but that was secondary in the Tuohys' minds.
I agree with Show Me that their best move would have been to settle this quietly and give Oher a cut of the proceeds from the movie if nothing else.
Conservatorships are typically reviewed annually. The forgot about it excuse doesn't fly.

Maybe "didn't give a shit about it" fits more than "forgot about it."
The conservator has to file reports with the court. Doesn't fly. Tuohy's are rat fucks.

It's too late for that. Regardless of how it turns out, they will always be the family that stole a young black kid to make some money. Might as well go down swinging and be vindicated in the eyes of your friends and family.

JFC are you that fucking obtuse or are you just trolling. It's already been explained and a pretty well known fact, that if you take a net profit deal with Hollywood, you are going to get screwed. That's why actors, directors and other people with enough leverage, negotiate deals based on gross revenues, not profits. The two links below, pretty well explains how Hollywood screws people with net profit deals.

Now you're talking. When you are rich and a decade removed from being famous, you crave nothing more than another taste of the fame. Not sure you could squeeze another movie out of it, but at least do some talk shows and get in the magazines about how you've been hurt. You can just picture Lee Anne in the People magazine with her hair and makeup done up with the look of someone with their fish stolt.

Now that MILF porn is a thing she could probably do a spread for some website and pull in some cash if the Taco Bell and movie money starts running low.
Or, Sean could maybe sell the private jet with all the different sports logos on the tail.
I suspect they don't need the money.
No good deed goes unpunished.

Michael Oher's conservatorship is terminated. Disturbed judge says she cannot believe Tuoy fam were allowed to control NFL stars finances in first place and has never seen such an agreement in 43 year career. The judge also said she's not dismissing the case. Apparently at no point did the Tuoys inform Michael that's they would have ultimate control of all his contracts.
