The dark side of portalers: They might be transferring for a chance at higher competition or a championship, or they might be transferring because they couldn't sniff the field at a non-SEC school but saw that our O-Line sucks so hard that they might have a chance here. Surely it's not because he thinks Cody Kennedy can coach him into the NFL.

Who writes these things? Does anyone think that any college student, much less an athlete, speaks this way? "The wonderful community of supporters" wtf. How about "ma homies."
LSU Tiger running back Armoni Goodwin announced via social media on Monday that he is entering the transfer portal. "This decision has not been easy, but I believe it is crucial for my personal and athletic growth," Goodwin said in a statement. "I want to emphasize that this decision in no way diminishes the immense appreciation and respect I have for LSU, its athletic program, and the wonderful community of supporters."

i agree with this. he got a lot of hype coming into the season, but just didn't seem to be the player everyone expected. he was pretty piss poor in defensing the pass.
He played so badly this year which was odd because he looked okay in spot duty last year. Think he's had several concussions too. Definitely not SEC caliber.
We didn't want him anyway
No one worth a shit wanted him out of high school. He'll have horrendous tape from this season.

Sometimes retreat is the best strategery. Had we gotten whipped at Florida maybe we'd have a different narrative right now. The positive of losing in 24 is it wrecks Sam's 500 buyout floor quick. Maybe fired by Oct 1.
WTF stories from the portal are going to be there for most everyone. I wouldn't draw the conclusions that it's uniquely us, or it's due to keeping Pittman.
The Michigan State Spartans have now seen all three quarterbacks who earned significant playing time announce intentions to enter the transfer portal when it opens up on Dec. 4. This all happened in the past 24 hours starting with redshirt freshman Katin Houser announcing his plan to enter the portal after starting primarily in the second half of the season. True freshman Sam Leavitt announced his intention to enter the transfer portal shortly after. On Tuesday, Noah Kim, who started the season as the Spartans' starting QB, announced he is looking to transfer.

South Carolina?? That's probably the last place I would have expected him to end up. Following Loggains?
I would have guessed State or TCU.
We don't play them so as far as I'm concerned that's a great place. As fun as he's been to watch when he's on, and I still remember him coming in and dropping dimes against Missouri when Franks was injured, he can go pout, eat skittles, and not lead on the field somewhere else.

I would think a lot of offensive players intent on bouncing will think twice now.
The issue with KJ is more his fit in Petrino's system, and if Petrino can go out and get someone better anywa.

I ASSUME Spencer Rattler is going "pro" if South Carolacky is looking to get a QB in there.
I'm not super concerned about Petrino getting some good QBs to work with.
But they certainly gonna have to fix some shit on the line or it won't matter one bit who the QB is.
If you look back we had a pretty shitty line in 2011.
Bobby took Casey Dick and made him a serviceable QB. I think we will be fine.
Petrino requires someone to throw on time and to a spot. KJ isn't capable of doing that. If he's going to play football past next year, he needs to move to TE.

He had one good season but he's the easiest-to-tackle "big back" I've ever seen.
His weight gain was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. The coaches purportedly weren't happy about it, but then they of course started spouting the "he's actually faster" and "pinch him and nothing moves" bullshit.

While I can understand your point I think you are selling these kids short in terms of their attention span. With that said If the crowd is any indication I think there are a lot of people/parents like minded in the point that Petrino's firing was bullshit and fuck everyone else we want DUBS. So perhaps instead of hearing that Petrino is trash they heard...god damn this program has been goat fucked since Petrino.
And when I say "KIDS" I mean all kids who have followed football over these last 12 years while growing up. Hell I was memorizing rosters and bios when I was 10 years old and look where that got me.
Sure the average kid over the last 5 years or so probably doesn't know much about Petrino. Memories fade and people let go of the rope eventually and then they get pulled right back in. KJ and Sanders undoubtedly would have seen the Missouri state prep and A&M...they know about BMFP.
The fact that KJ's going to portal became "misinformation" about 5 minutes after it was announced that Petrino was coming says he put the brakes on that shit real quickly. Personally I think he gets told to move on or at the very least is told the job is going to be a competition. KJ can probably meet with the coaches during the off-season stuff over the next month or two and they can evaluate him and he can decide if he's a fit. They'll still be schools trying to fill holes in the roster as late as April and May.
My prediction is KJ goes to Auburn.
Petrino undoubtedly would get more out of KJ than Enos did but there is still some huge short comings to his game and he's probably more or less set in his ways at this point. There is still the weirdly inaccurate balls he's been throwing. Some people feel like the guy has had shoulder and/or elbow throwing motion issues for a while now. KJ has taken a lot of abuse to his body over the last 4 years or so. Playing for Bobby isn't going to make that any better because his offense tends to gamble on the QB getting the ball out before getting killed but get the ball out even if you do get killed and get it out accurately. Does that sound like something KJ can do? I don't feature the UA gambling again on another offense change with a QB that flat out struggled in something closer to pro style and much further away to the Briles system. Especially when Petrino can probably find a portal guy that either knows his offense or fits more closely to what he wants.

In the discussion of players and the portal the unknown factor is money. If you're 19/20 years old and another school has an extra $100-200k? Why do people keep saying this when we cheap out on athletics all the time?
Some facilities aside (which, save for baseball, are middle of the pack in the SEC), we simply don't spend money on coaches or players nearly to the degree other teams do.
Either we have money and don't spend it, or we don't have it. Neither is desirable.

We spent $6mm more than Ole Miss in FY22. They are operating at a deficit and showed huge increases in spending categories across the board. Their facilities are on the lower end of the conference. that post seems to imply that schools themselves fund nil. they don't.
instead of a few giving a lot, they have a lot giving some. same with most of the other sec schools.

missouri and ole miss set up collectives that the average fan can give what they can and state exactly where it goes. we were late in the game in doing that.

Also, I suspect many of their boosters who are funding NIL are doing so at the expense of donations to their athletic foundation...hence the deficit spending HTL pointed out.
We need to figure out a way to transition from donors funding the athletic department to contributors fund the talent acquisition and the massive TV payouts paying for facilities, operating expenses, coaches salaries, etc.
That would mean tying ticket and parking priority to NIL contributions, which I'm not sure if there is a legal way to do right now.
The way most of these collectives are set up, donations to these are tax deductible (for now...the IRS is licking its chops), where contributions to athletic foundations for ticket priority are not. We need to take advantage of this as well, at least until the IRS cracks down on the collectives as 501(c)(3) orgs.

I think we'll see the elimination of most sports and women's sports, or at least maybe a segregation of them into a "non-profit" division that still values amateurism. If athletes are to be employees or even de-facto employees entitled to profit sharing, it makes no sense if there are not profits. Under those rules, football and men's basketball are the only sports that make sense. The others can go a Division III route.

NCAA trying to save their own ass, the big football schools should do away with them
Quote from: egregious on Dec 05, 2023, 10:47 AMNCAA trying to save their own ass, the big football schools should do away with them
Exactly. They're basically saying "we'll allow you to write your own rule book."
In that case, what will the NCAA even do? Their only job now is basically to put schools on probation for breaking the rules, but if everyone gets to write their own rules, what is left to punish? They just don't want Big Ten/SEC to split, steal away the key non B1G/SEC schools left, and just form their own "NCAA"
The suits have ruined college athletics.
Neither the NCAA nor the schools can do anything without congress. Under the recent rulings, any kind of rule they come up with regarding compensation is going to be an anti-trust violation.
The thing about NIL is exactly what it means Name, Image, and Likeness wherefore does any of that merit compensation in a fair and open market. It has nothing to do with gender or equity. If the market says no then it's no...if someone wants to pay you then great. Revenue sharing is a whole other can of worms and even slippery slope
If schools get openly involved in compensation, the next battle will be the disparity in male and female athlete compensation.
Count on it.

That's the point, it ain't entirely up to the schools or the NCAA as to how this plays out. Court ruling and state legislatures are why we are where we are. And besides, doing away with scholarships doesn't negate the requirement that a football player be enrolled as a student.

Is the band member or math whiz getting paid directly by the school?
NIL is an example of why the NCAA fought any form of payment to athletes at all. In just a few short years it has devolved into boosters more or less buying athletes.
This ground has all been covered before. College football was second only to baseball in popularity in the 1920s. Schools and boosters were hiring 30 year old oilfield workers and roughnecks to beat up on 18 year old college kids. The NCAA was instituted to get control of it.
And short of Congress carving out some sort of anti-trust exemption it is going to be real hard for schools to pay players. There won't be any upper limits to it or that would an anti-trust violation. Likewise, I think any minimums would be too as that it would be collusion to set market rates that made it impossible for some schools to compete.
Congress is going to act to keep NCAA sports similar to what they are now. Not sure they will though.

I think you're not aware of the massive revenue engine of the NFL. It dwarfs the college game by the metric that matters: money.
The salary cap is 2024 is estimated at $240.5 mill per team. Thats $7.69 billion to the players, so the owners get roughly $8.1 billion and that's just tv revenue.
Jerry is the best at maximizing revenue at his stadium, as ATT brings him another billion a year in game revenue. That doesn't count the 20k that still take the $30 your a week, and the constant corporate events there every day and all the other college games bowls and events. World Cup coming.
No 32 teams in College can approach it.
The issue of player development is huge. College ball is no longer developing linemen or QBs with their game. So does the nfl try to make the USFL a spring developmental league and compete with college? Or does the nfl do an end around the ncaa and approach the SEC and Big10 about being this for pay college league that is a partnered developmental league? Built in tv markets. Kids with potential flick to the new set up. Big 12 acc and rest get crumbs.

If he's in the portal I don't reckon we'll be seeing him play.
He runs real well and was asked throw a lot of deep balls which skews his stats. I looked up his stat lines on the season and he played a lot but I figure they had another QB getting snaps as well.
Beyond that I don't know that I'm wowed but I'm not really seeing a helluva lot of QBs in the portal that move the needle. If we're legit trying to have someone come in and "compete" and not necessarily be penciled in as the starter it's probably going to be a guy like this.
Criswell or Singleton may very well be able to gain a lot of ground in the off-season under a new/better OC and new/better direction of the program now with lineman (we hope)

I don't know what evidence there is for that. He has notoriously been a front-runner, and his teams have rolled over in the biggest moments. They started 2022 with a 7=0 record against a weak schedule, then lost 5 of the last 6. This year, they beat two ranked teams (Tulane and LSU) and were beaten convincingly by Alabama and anal raped by Georgia.
He's 2-4 in bowl games, with one win as a home game at Boca Raton and the other in Year Covid against powerhouse Indiana.

I fully expect us to be much improved in almost every aspect next year, but lose several close calls because we will have an inconsistent head case of a kicker.
My uninformed take on this is that Green is brought in to "compete". We have presumably two other QBs on the roster in Singleton and Criswell that will have a chance to win the starter gig. Also KJ could come back but I'm guessing he gone. I don't think his 40 is quite that good but he has more lateral quickness and shiftiness than Matt. He shows a pretty high level of athleticism in his highlights, especially for someone of his height. He doesn't have a big arm but shows some touch on his passes and throws a pretty catchable ball. Has a funky looking throwing motion.

We had a juco TE (Genross) pull out of his commitment. With Hasz, Washington, Gumms...plus add in some other scrub commitment from Denmark plus we have Easter who was a true freshman this season. Lets look at it like this too.
We have a staff/coach that came out and told anyone who would listen that it's not their fault we suck balls. We cannot buy players as good as the other programs can for lack of NIL money. Also we don't poach other teams players because #integrity. We are keeping so many of these players largely because they know they have no place to go not because they are committed to being developed and want to made into born again hard eat the boogers out of a dead man type of players. In the prior couple years we had a number of guys that never found a landing spot, some had to go down to scrub leagues. Very few made upgrade or lateral moves. Certainly you need NIL in the bag these days but I think if all you have to sell is a payday then we aren't doing something right.

They probably take their recruits out to dine somewhere nice and try to convey a vibe of success. We've forever taken ours to a place called Catfish Hole, rather than any of the 25 better restaurants in Fayetteville.
Shit like that. For whatever unknown fucking reason, we've forever had leadership that never misses an opportunity to portray our program as poor, backwoods, stupid, etc. It's like nobody even understands how marketing works. Not a single surprise that they have no idea how to play the NIL game, in spite of being located in a metro with a lot of wealth and plenty of people who care about sports.
I don't know how you even hire Sam Pittman in the first place, let alone give him a huge contract with a buyout. It wouldn't have been any worse if we were failing on purpose. After Chad Morris, and now Pittman, I fully understand why we probably have donors sitting on the sidelines for now.

Let's face it. Our football program died when BMFP was canned. We have tried to revive it with holistic medicine instead of life saving procedures from real doctors with degrees. This right here.
I do hope that BMFP can give us a spark on offense and at least help us compete. It's much easier to sell the program on a new staff when we don't look absolute shit. However, I don't think the staff will get it done long term at all. Free agency is making things even harder, and everyone knows that Pittman is basically on life support. I did hope we could pull out some talent from the portal again this year, but seems like that won't happen either. Which really sucks, because next year's schedule features every team I truly hate at our house... going to be another long year, I predict.
I happen to believe, with good enough evidence, that we have a culture going back 50 years of donors more interested in mah grandson or mah boy playing for the Hogs than their interest in us winning.
That's right, there's not the will to win by our largest donors. More of how much can I control and can I get my way.
We could win easily. But we'd have to change the culture first. And every time someone tries they get canned.
I know of one donor, big one, who turned on Nolan because his son didn't get a scholarship. His son sucked. But it started the undermining that got to Broyles, who was already wanting to fire him, even though he won our only thing of significance that everyone agrees on.
Many such cases. You want to know why Sam is still here? He's playing the right game. I'm not going to spell it all out but there are some players playing above better players because some asses Sam is damn sure kissing and that's what matters up there now, and really always has.
It's a big club, and we ain't in it.
I won't pretend I know anything about the bulk of the donors to the program. I can speculate perhaps fairly accurately that the UA has produced it's share of reasonably wealthy people many of which have probably had careers with big retail, banking, and whatever else.
I can further speculate that our problem may be that we aren't getting donors from your wealthy 30 and 40 something crowd and the old money people haven't really clued into how all this shit works now.
Oh and let's review here...the same types of people who have been asked to donate to the UA for years and now supposed to shit out rainbows for NIL money too for a program that continues to piss it's pants.
Most everyone I know who has been really successful at some point took on the kind of risk/debt that would make most of us lose sleep. Some of them went bust several times. Ole Miss is reaching for the brass ring right now. They might go bust, but they might just hit it big too. We, on the other hand, are living hand to mouth while we brag about how frugal we're being and how much we are going to enjoy retirement with all the money we've saved.
Our leadership lacks vision and thinks financial security in the athletics department is an end in and of itself instead of a means to an end. All the money in the world does no good if you don't win. And if you don't win, the money starts drying up eventually.

Quote from: red death on Dec 18, 2023, 12:30 PMI happen to believe, with good enough evidence, that we have a culture going back 50 years of donors more interested in mah grandson or mah boy playing for the Hogs than their interest in us winning.
I think this is bs. I can't think of more than about 2 such legacy players on any one team. The Lindsey kids, Jerry's grandson, Chad's kid, etc. I know there were a few others, but not any significant numbers on any one team. And sometimes, you will take one to get another. I wonder if that is what is happening with the Archer kids from Greenwood. Not sure we have offered the older one yet, but wouldn't surprise me if we did.
And some of them aren't bad. See Billy Ray Smith.

Is our strategy to focus our NIL money on defense and just hope Petrino can make chicken salad out of a thin and untalented offense? If we succeed, Sam keeps his job. If we fail, it'll probably be because of the offense, so Sam can point the finger at Bobby on his way out the door. Is that the plan?
Nah. We're just flailing and occasionally landing one good player for every three we lose.

From what I'm seeing the criticism here seems a bit unfounded. No we aren't landing a Who's Who list of guys but we are landing some need positions.
We have added 3 offensive linemen addressing need positions and probably not done there.
We have added a QB and presumably will work with our other QBs already on the roster.
We landed a linebacker but need more halp
We have addressed our kicker/punter roles by landing a Hawaii kicker and also brought back the Veto kid from a couple years ago.
We added an experienced defensive back
The bulk of the WRs/TEs that played this past season are going to be back and beyond that I'm going to trust the process that some of these young kids are going to want to come play for Petrino once guys start to see how this roster is coming together. Looks like Dozier will be staying I figure he actually get used.
Yes we need some DTs, Edge rusher(s), more OLs, probably add a running back to the group.
People need to calm their tits this portal stuff goes on a long time and this is just the first phase of it. They'll be a new portal season during the spring/early summer.

They do a better job of getting money from the "middle class rich" - small business owners and such - where we seem to focus on hitting up the major corporations. NIL contributions are effectively a vanity purchase...a "look what I can afford to do thing"...or a spend where you know you aren't getting ROI for your business but you're doing it out of concern for the program. Walmart, Tyson, etc. can't justify giving significant sums to college athletes who only deliver promotional value in a very limited area, if at all.
Because schools like Ole Miss don't have the major corporations to rely on for funding, they've always been better at cultivating the guy who owns the local tractor dealership, plumbing company, or used car lot, or the friendly neighborhood personal injury lawyer. A lot of those people have what most of us would consider fuck you money, and will spend some of it to help their favorite team.

I agree with the premise that they get more from the "middle class rich" but I am not so sure about the idea that we depend on "major corporations" to fund our NIL programs. Fact is, I doubt seriously the publicly traded corporations like Walmart and Tysons donate much, if any, to NIL. They can't justify major expenses for that to their shareholders, who are nationwide or worldwide.
Sure they can pay to have their names slapped on the stadium, like Walmart, and John Tyson-- individually-- can do whatever in the hell he wants, but direct contributions from the corporations to NIL? I doubt it.

I agree, that was my point. Corporations can't justify giving money to athletes in one market who have zero marketing value outside of that area. It doesn't matter how much Doug McMillon or John Furner love the Razorbacks...their board and shareholders of Walmart aren't going to tolerate them spending corporate funds on what would essentially be a personal expense.
I think we have relied on those corporate entities (and their execs' personal spending) to fund the athletic department for so long that we aren't equipped or prepared to do it any other way, which a thriving NIL program necessitates. Schools like Ole Miss, Miss State, and even Auburn haven't had those massive public corporations in their backyard, so they've had to cultivate the folks like I mentioned in the above post. It's a big factor in why their facilities pale in comparison to ours, but their NIL is kicking our ass. It's also why they were better able to cheat in recruiting for so long before buying players outright became illegal.
Let's be honest...the ROI for NIL spending is shit, unless you're a small mom and pop retail who is paying Devo, Hagen Smith, or KJ (pre-portal) to come sign autographs for a day. Those kinds of events aren't moving the needle.

I think the difference is pretty simple. Methouri and Ole Piss are coming off really good seasons that would have landed both in a 12 team playoff. That loosens up a lot of purse strings. Arkansas' NIL program would be rolling in dough if we had done the same.

But when the NIL got started, we were coming off 9-4 and a NYD bowl win. Ole Miss had a similar year. Missouri went 6-6 and lost their bowl. It's not as simple as wins/losses, although the momentum is probably a factor. We've done a terrible job of putting together a program relative to those schools.
It's leadership and no, we're not serious.
Ole Miss went big and hired the best candidate they could find and didn't pinch pennies. Now, they've experience success and have money to burn relatively speaking.
Our leadership tried to pinch pennies and got butthurt when our top candidate made more push for a little more money and let Ole Miss swoop in and take him. We saved our pennies and hired a guy who had never been a head coach. We are now cash strapped because people don't want to pay big money for a crap product.
By the way, the same butthurt and penny pinching attitude sent Briles down the road when one of his best friends made a run at him and caused the meltdown we had this past year.
Serious programs don't pinch veritable pennies when they are dealing with something that has $170 million a year in revenue.
And speaking to the point above about NIL, serious programs don't appoint ex athletes with virtually no qualifications except being ex athletes to run their NIL programs.
Hell, for that matter serious programs don't promote a lawyer who made a cut and paste error on a contract that cost the foundation millions of dollars to head of their fundraising foundation.

NIL today is different today than what it was 2 years ago. There were no rules and everybody was trying to figure it out. Ark was one of the first to set up a program, but as usual, they tried to do it with integrity and incorporate what NIL actually meant, Name, Image and Likeness. Most everybody else decided since there were no rules, that it is simply pay for play and out bidding other schools for players would be the norm. Like always, Ark is a couple of years behind everybody else in figuring that out.

Maybe not being in the playoffs causes de-commits, too. Florida State can't seem to catch a break this offseason. Outside of maybe 20 schools the NIL just can't be sustainable.
The give/investor can't receive much on ROI. The player gets injured, doesn't perform, or portals following year.
What is embarrassing are NIL Daspit Law Firm commercials still running on the TVs with Rocket Sanders as the star.
I will never donate.
There's simply no way these schools are relying on the Pascal heat and air and plumbing and electrical type companies to help fund their NIL... especially in Arkansas where maybe there are 10 companies of that scale of operations. So if there are 10 of them how many are forking over 100 plus grand or whatever. I don't see it. I get it from if you at scale let's say 200 small businesses contribute between 10 and 100k that turns into a lot of disposable income. But is some of that donation to the athletic dept and other to NIL etc. you are still competing for the dollar.
Agree on sustainability for nil. It's new.
Once these boosters realize a couple years of no ROI gains, guys they donated to specifically to get on campus portaling out or not performing, they will get stale on the whole idea.
It takes fuck you money to put $1 mm a year every year into your entertainment hobby with no returns other than your team winning. I can't imagine too many schools have many boosters who fit the bill long term.

I think you are right on sustainability, and that's what hurts a school like Arkansas with a small population base and a relatively small alumni base. If the 'whisper" numbers of players getting hundreds of thousands of dollars (and of course even millions for the Arch Mannings out there) are correct even the big schools will have a hard time maintaining that level of payments in the long run. Even the car dealerships won't pay that in the long run, although they may go in and out of the market (ie, McClarty for a few years, then Gwatney, then Everette, etc) then back to McClarty, and start the rotation again.
Right now lots of people are excited about it, but I wonder what the whole NIL marketplace will look like in 5 years.
but arkansas has a slightly larger population, median income, and alumni base than mississippi.
why are they seemingly able to kill it with nil? make all the excuses you want, but it's because their fans are willing to give more.
yes, the university might have been a little slow on the uptake when it comes to nil, but that doesn't explain the apparent huge discrepancy between the two programs. not to me at least.

This is the right answer. Arkansas is a 6 win program right now. Missouri and Ole Miss are 10 win programs. Both have solid coaches.
Pretty simple reasoning as to why Arkansas isn't competing right now. It has less than zero to do with money.

Sean Tuohy owns a bunch of fast food restaurants. One of their big boosters I met several years ago was a PI lawyer. Mossy Oak is probably their biggest business booster.
There was an article by Steven Godfrey several years ago that went behind the scenes talking to the guys funding schools' talent acquisition. He didn't say what state it was, but it was pretty obvious by a) the descriptions he gave, b) the timing of his article (when Freeze was buying players at OM) and c) the writer's ties to Ole Miss that he was discussing Mississippi. The people putting up the money for both that state's schools were exactly the type I mentioned above.

Those plaintiff's lawyers, car dealers, and such are the guys who like to show the size of their peckers by buying players.

We would've been in a bowl game this year with him. BYU and Miss. St would've been easy wins. But nah, getting rid of him to go 4-8 was the clearly the move. :D
I thought Briles sucked. He wasn't the reason we dropped off on offense this year, it was a horrendous OL.

As the ultimate football X and O authority here, Briles was a circus clown. Enos has the worst offensive design in the modern game so anything in comparison looks better.
Briles' offense at TCU this season was 13th in the NCAA in yds per game. And that includes 5 games with a backup QB.
I'm not saying he's the best in the business, but he's a damn sight better than what we had here this year and we would've made a bowl game had he stayed. 6-6 is slightly better than 4-8.
Bottom line is that it doesn't really matter who the OC is, we'll still just be mediocre at best with Sam as HC.

Briles's system and philosophy is good. It was his situational play calling that was ass.
In hindsight Sam should have found someone with a similar style to replace him. There should have been someone available from the Art Briles tree that we could have gotten for what we paid Enos.
It wasn't the amount of money it would have taken to keep Kendal that caused them to let him walk. It was the fact that he had just hit them up for and received a raise a couple of weeks earlier when Mississippi State offered him their position. I completely understand telling the guy to take a fucking walk when he comes back to the well that quickly after accepting an offer.
Briles could rack up yardage like a motherfucker between the 20's, but was pure ass in the red zone. Look at his red zone stats when he was with us and TCU. Pure ass.
Seems like the anti Briles crowd is beating the Briles for OC crowd.
Again, you can hate the Administration for perceived shortcomings but letting Briles walk is not one of those reasons.
As a neutral observer, every game thread lasted maybe 1.5 pages before it turned into a "wtf is Briles doing" thread. Maybe the naysayers were just more vocal, but it certainly seemed they were in the majority.

Bidding war I'm sure.
After 41-3, 24-21 and 27-14 losses to K-State, WVU and Iowa St in the first half of the season a LOT of TCU fans thought the Briles hire was the worst ever.
The team actually got better on offense the latter half of the year with Hoover at QB and a lot of TCU fans think that kid is the second coming.
I was at Baylor-TCU and it was the same TE reverse or shotgun delay play on 3rd and short and getting stuffed... frustrating. I also bet there were only 25K in the stands for a game against a local rival.
I'm not saying Enos wasn't worse and was an awful idea, but I wasn't sad to see Briles go and I'm definitely happier with our current OC.

Gus needs to see if he can convince KJ to drop about 30 cheeseburgers worth of weight. He needs to be a lot lighter on his feet to be in the Gus system. While I don't think we're sitting on this mythical pile of cash that we were always told about under JFB, we cannot be broke. If nothing else, our media revenue is about to increase by somewhere between $20MM and $50MM starting this year thanks to the new ESPN deal.
The difference between us and Ole Miss is that they are actually spending that money as it comes in rather than being conservative with it. I'm almost certain we're still paying the note on the NEZ vanity project that we really didn't need. No doubt we've had poor evals and bad development but that has followed this program for years and years and that is only getting worse with NIL/portal free agency. It's made programs lazy in recruiting/development and that's all sports.

I'm not sure what there is to even be upset about (at least in this specificcase). Sure, in an ideal world we would contact every single skilled player hitting the transfer portal that may have the slightest interest in us. But christ on a cracker, quite a few are gonna be missed. With the portal sitting at something like 2k having entered this year, I can see most teams missing on some.

Don't disagree for the most part. I would be shocked if he truly knows he can't be successful. I think he thinks he can get it done. Regardless, he surly knows he is on the hot seat. And by all accounts he is a great guy. Which makes the entire situation unfortunate.

Regardless, it is funny.
What the portal is showing is that there are maybe 10 real top tier teams and then everyone else. If someone leaves that one of those teams doesn't want to leave, they go to a team in that group for the most part. Castoffs (or pissed offs like Drew Sanders) float down to the 2 teams I root for.
GT is in a comfortable conference for that, Arkansas not so much but they get a lot more money.
All what's happening with Bama is just the shoe on the other foot. It's life for everybody else.
My heart absolutely weeps for them.
what's apparent, to me anyway, is a lot of those guys didn't go to tuskaloosa to play for the university of alabama, they went to play for nick saban.
for those that say bama will just keep rolling because they're bama, i have my doubts. two 10 win seasons from 1997 to saban's first in 2008.
The guy they hired isn't a name, doesn't mean he won't become a big deal in the coming years but certainly a lot of talent is walking out of the building in the wake of Saban's retirement. That was to be expected. This almost screams that Bama hired a coach to be fired in 3 years to go get a homerun hire but didn't want to show up the old man right out of the gate.

Just when you thought the situation with the Portal and all the transfers couldn't get worse, this happens and it will. I think there are at least two of these suits, and I believe they will ultimately result in unlimited transfers for these "students".
that motion pertains to nil and the ncaa's rule that limits nil discussions until the athlete enrolls in school. it includes transfers, but has nothing else to do with the portal.
and as of now, players can transfer as many times as they want without penalty because of another temporary restraining order.
The transfer rule is doing more damage than NIL is. It removes any ability to discipline kids when they can transfer any time they get their feelings hurt.
Coaches could stop signing portal kids. I know, will never happen. But, that would solve the issue.
Edit: This post was not in response to anyone in particular.

you are right, I didn't make myself clear--I think ultimately there won't be any rules for NIL at all and unlimited transfers will be permanently available. In my view, this will be very damaging to college sports.
