Title: NCAAT thread
Post by: jdcatty on Mar 19, 2024, 09:19 PM
Seems to me like we need an official NCAAT thread.  Not just the "brackets" thread.

Colorado State-Virginia is awful.  Va scored 14 points in the first half, Colorado state 25.

What the hell happened to Va?  They won a national championship not too long ago, if I remember correctly.

Va has scored 19 points and there is 15 minutes left in the SECOND half.

They did but even then they were only scoring in the 50s.

at one point they mentioned that UVA had 6 20 point losses.
How on earth did they get a bid - however if Sankey gets his way more shitty p5 team like this one tonight will get into the tournament instead of mid-majors with a better record (and also won't get scheduled by the p5s either).

Texas A&M is another team that has some shitty losses including 2 to us.

On the bright side, Vaginia has only two turnovers!

Well we don't have to worry about them any more.  And since they aren't really in the official brackets, we can act like they aren't there at all.

speaks to how low the bar was this season and we still managed to be so terrible that we couldn't sniff the dance. This was an absolutely terrible coaching job by Muss Buss.

Georgia is 17-16 and went to the NIT after a bunch of programs said we good. A couple more wins and we too could have turned down the NIT :))

We maybe could have beaten Virginia

Or given up 100 to them

We might or might not have beaten them, but they definitely would have had their best offensive game of the season.

This Colorado Boise game is low quality basketball. Neither one looks like they would fit in the SEC very well, or maybe down in the Vandy Arkansas region.

Uhh, that's what absolutely happens when they win, they enter the bracket. And teams have advanced many times. Hell, I think VCU made it all the way to the Final 4 or Elite 8 years back.

going to be a busy night for the remote control, especially with our baseball game at Auburn on SECN beginning at 6 pm.

Honestly don't see how anyone can beat UConn this year, but that's why it's fun.  Almost every year even the winner just barely escapes one game.

We'd have needed 13 sec teams to make the tourney this year to be included.

Maybe a bold assumption on my part that the committee would put us in ahead of vandy.

Michigan St. 31
Mississippi St. 24

Didn't see it but a lot of scoring. Have to assume that Moo U's secondary got torched and Mich St can't handle the Bulldogs' ground game. I also see that Mich St hit a field goal going into halftime to account for their 31.

(To me "that's a football score" jokes will never grow old. So sue me.)

We spent much of January and February getting blown out by double digits and more.  I have no delusions.

We were like a golfer who can hit 300-yard drives off the first three holes, making a birdie each time, then hit it at 90 degree angles for the next six holes, making snowmen or worse on each hole.

Y'all can hate on Cal all you want but I would take him over Muss any day. He gets the best players in the country every year and is always in the hunt. Some years it works out, some years it doesn't. Like any coach...but to a better clip. But he always has the talent to be a contender...and that makes it interesting. And you can't hardly pick a team in the NBA he doesn't have a player playing for...but it makes it fun to follow as an NBA fan.

I agree with a lot of that, not all.  He always has great talent.  But he sure seems to underachieve with it.  But he always has an offense that is something more than just "pass the ball around till someone sees the opportunity to go one on one" which many times it seems like we have.

I imagine if KY granted him permission to look around the whole buyout thing would go away. In lieu of no Muss sure I'd take a flyer on Cal. I don't overly like him but I agree he's going to have you in the hunt every year and feature some of the very best talent.

It is uncanny watching other major programs have "well coached" teams when I've been told all season that's unpossible now with NIL/portals.

Cal is a greasy con man. He screwed Memphis over and they still hate him over here. This is one reason the SEC teams have struggled. They're used to 50 fouls called every game. Refs letting them play in NCAA tourney. Not getting as many easy points from the foul line.

I hate the TV schedule once the 2nd round starts.

Only one game at a time until primetime then they have 3 at once.

The timing should be the same as the first round, but two games at once instead of four.

The announcers were just wrong. The Oakland guy threw it out of bounds, even after the NC State guy might have touched it. And I think I heard "expert" Gene Staritor change his analysis on the fly. He said it touched the NC State player, then after heard that NC State had the ball, he said and it touched the Oakland player after that. Smooth, Gene, smooth.

I've been watching NC State defend Goehlke. They have a quicker player on him, who is in actual physical contact 100% of the time that Oakland has the ball. Not just guarding him. Not near him. Literally either reaching out and touching him, or bodying up to him. No matter where he is on the court, 100% of the time. He's still gotten loose a few times, but it's a good plan, I think.

Yep, the league office dictates to the refs how to call the games and when to start calling fouls on a particular team. You don't see the dipshittary when the same refs call games in other leagues.

So by my count if Purdue wins, Duke and A&M both win...that's three Sweet 16 teams we beat. Purdue didn't count but whatever. Alabama would be the 4th but we got fucked. I know we keep saying it but this team had enough talent to at least get to the dance...the coaching/schematics and chemistry was just fucked up as Hogan's goat.

Carry on.

That court vision or whatever ESPN calls it is so slick.  Edit: The all chick analysis crew that ESPN has put together has been top notch for the whole tournament.

UCONN is making the rest of Iowa beat them, and it's working.  Iowa is going to have to pick up the pace and try to get UCONN players tired and/or in foul trouble.

Yeah, Niko Muhl is fierce.

She's also a good basketball player.

But I digress. There was never a doubt that Iowa would be outclassed athletically. They were against LSU too. Clark is just ice cold and won't just drive for short shots, which she has been really effective at getting. And unfortunately, they don't seem to have plays to set her up for shorter distance looks for three.

If she'd stop the 30 footers, which clearly aren't falling, they might have a chance.

They didn't let anything that egregious go.   That call had to be made.
Title: Re: NCAAT thread
Post by: The Whyte Boar on Apr 06, 2024, 11:07 AM
They had already called an illegal screen offensive foul on UConn earlier in the game.  They were obviously looking for it.  And yes, there numerous times it wasn't called.  Then it looked even worse because it was set by the biggest player on the floor against the smallest who was absolutely selling out and trying to stay on her man because to contest a last shot.

It was the right call and it was obvious and egregious.

What I couldn't understand is with the way they were guarding Clark all the way up the court and with Clark's range, why Iowa wasn't setting picks and ball screens for her as soon as she crossed half court.  All she needs is a half step from 30 feet and in.

I would love to see them call the moving screens and carrying the damned basketball.  That UConn point was literally turning her palm straight towards the sky last night bringing the ball up the floor and she wasn't even being guarded closely.  Some of these players absolutely could not operate if the rules were called the same way they were even in the early 90s.

It just feels like Purdue doesn't have the horses.

It was in all years up until 2023-24 for some reason.

Edey has disappeared and Purdue isn't making shots.  Now the refs are calling bullshit fouls on Purdue.

They changed the charge rule to make the defender have to be set when the offensive player set hus plant foot.  I'm so glad they changed that rule.  It had become unwatchable over the last few years with all the ridiculous charges.

No love for JWill.

Back to the game, UConn is just too good. They are by far the most complete team in the nation, positions 1-8, 2 years running.

Anybody notice that this is probably the whitest championship game in the last 40 years at least?

Uconn probably has 8 of the 10 best players in this game.

Pretty sure it's been noted and LeBron will tweet something like he's not rolling with this.

UConn just had too much to go along with their center, Clingan. Not so much for Purdue.

Quote from: BleedinRed on Apr 08, 2024, 08:25 PMIn a national Championship game there are more white guys on the floor than black guys.  Wonder when the last time that happened?

Quote from: Barton Fink on Apr 08, 2024, 08:46 PMBtw, aren't you from the Bryant area? Did you go to school with Chris Barron?

Chris was my best friend when we were kids. The baseball moms gave me "boobs in a can" to put in my mitt when I caught him. Dude was hitting 80 when we were 10.
