Title: Hogs vs Auburn—-Baseball
Post by: Son of Spam on Mar 20, 2024, 07:52 AM
Your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Auburn Wareagletigerplainsmen for a three game series starting this Thursday at 6:00 on the SECN. Then we resume on Friday at 6:00 on SECN+ and again on Saturday at 2:00 on SECN+. This will be our first SEC road series. As usual, GO HOGS! I will not be available for PBP except for maybe the Thursday night game. Now, for, your entertainment...(even if it starts out about football)

I can do PBP Friday.  Maybe Thursday if I get everything done on time.

I'm out for Saturday.

It's likely there's no Friday game and then a double header on Saturday. I believe that would make both of the Saturday games 7 innings.

Yeah, looks like a good chance of rain both Friday and a 55% chance on Saturday.

This seems like a good time for a reminder of the stupid ass SEC rule which states that if a team plays Thursday-Saturday and the Saturday game gets rained out (or Thursday and Friday both get called) the teams cannot make up the game(s) on Sunday.

TIL that this weekend's series is Thurs-Saturday.

Good thing I clicked this thread and opened the OP, otherwise I'd have missed Thursday's game.

Such a dumbass rule.

Also, the shortened DH rule is dumb. We can play a full 18 inning DH against McNeese State (actually 17 due to run rule in game 2), but have to play a shortened DH in a conference series?

Makes zero sense.

but if it was football would they do that? hell no! Sankey is a cheap bastard and probably doesn't want to pay the umpires an additional day of work and hotel.

Greetings my (woo)Piggaz.  Tonight SEC baseball season begins with an away series versus the University of Auburn War Eagle Tiger Plainsmen.  The game is on real television tonight, on the SEC Network, but if you're bored or a poor feel free to join us for less than stellar play-by-play (unless @Son of Spam wants to take over).  The Tigers are coached by the epitome of mediocrity, Bitch Thompson (no typo).

(EDITOR'S NOTE:  This is your 847th reminder of the time in the 2017 SEC Tournament when Bitch Thompson denied Razorback legend Chad Spamburger the opportunity to hit for a home run cycle by intentionally walking him with two men on and Spamburger needing only the three run HR to complete the feat.  Yes, I still hold a grudge, and so should you.)

Starting Lineups are as follows:

YOUR ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS:

1. Peyton Stovall 2B
2. Kendall Diggs RF
3. Wehiwa Aloy SS
4. Ben McLaughlin 1B
5. Jared Sprague-Lott 3B
6. Ross Lovich LF
7. Hudson White C
8. Nolan Souza DH
9. Ty Wilmsmeyer CF

Marc Curles' Favorite Baseball Team:

3. Bobby "my ancestors couldn't spell" Peirce RF
4. Cooper "Body By Sonny DiChiara" McMurray 1B
5. Chris Stanfield CF
6. Mason Maners LF
7. Deric "my parents can't spell" Fabian 3B
8. Christian Hall DH
9. Javon Hernandez 2B

First pitch at 6PM, or whenever Finebaum dumps his last redneck caller for the evening...whichever comes last.

I may catch hell for this, but I am not sold on Tygart as a starter. Also, Rowland needs to ride the pine. And Diggs needs to try bunting to get a bat on the ball. I don't know who I would start in place of Tygart, but I just ain't sold...yet.

Tygart may be the guy who needs to come out of the pen for a couple of weeks before returning to the rotation in May/June, like Smith last year.  He's got elite stuff but is struggling with control right now.

The trouble is...where do you use him in a high leverage spot?  At this point I wouldn't put him in Willy Mac or Gaeckle's slot.

Best move is probably to keep starting him and let him figure it out.  I mean, going into tonight he was statistically our best pitcher...even ahead of Smith.

Yeah I think he can only be a starter. He has to have still healing scar tissue from his last late relief efforts.

I may be able to take PBP tomorrow if no one else can but may not be able to finish (that's what she said).

I think he may be trying to outdo Smith or Willy Mac and may be throwing too hard. He needs to stay with what he has and fine tune that. He has been doing good so far, but has had control problems in the past, too. But, if we can get 4-5 good innings out of him, we will be OK.

He's just off a little.  He's not overthrowing...hell, he's hit mid 90s in the past and was barely 91-92 with his fastball tonight.  Honestly I hope he's not hurt.

I can potentially get PBP tomorrow.

Agree on Tygart. He's the only starter who consistently makes me bite my fingers to the nub. His control is all over the place. Even when he was 'on' against Mizzou he was still hitting a shitload of batters and issuing too many walks. I think he and Molina need to swap spots in the rotation, because I think he's pressing too much having to follow Hagen. The only potential replacement would be McEntire, but I think he's too valuable as a long relief guy out of the pen.

As someone said yesterday, Diggs is quietly in a slump. He usually has great plate discipline and approach, but his AB's have been downright shitty lately.

And Rowland doesn't ever need to play in a weekend game again. I'd have said that even if Helfrick never hits that homer. He somehow looks worse at the plate than he did last year (which is difficult since he finished the year batting .182), but he seems to have developed the yips and regressed defensively, which was formerly his saving grace.

Helfrick was admittedly struggling at the plate before last night, but he has infinitely more pop and power than Rowland. Helfrick already has as many homers (2) in 20 AB's this season as Rowland had all of last year.

Rowland struggles to put balls in play, and has a sub-Mendoza Line slugging percentage. He had only 4 extra base hits all of last year, which was worse than even Bolton, who could barely hit the ball out of the infield.

That was a pretty generous strike to get Stovall.

If it caught the zone, it was the extreme northeast corner.

That might be it for me doing PBP.

Pretty sure the last time I did it was the OSU loss in Arlington.

As much as we would like to, we aren't going to win every game.  Give me a series win for every conference series, and I will be very happy.

Our series record dating back years is really impressive.  Nothing to be ashamed about this weekend.

As with most series, there are takeaways good and bad.

The Good
- Hagen did Hagen things.
- We made some big outs defensively when we really needed them to get out of some jams, specifically Friday night.
- Helfrick's nuts might've dropped.
- Edmunson emerged as a potential platoon guy in the outfield.
- McEntire might be our second best pitcher, or at least most valuable one after Hagen.
- We've likely seen the last of Rowland on the weekends.
- I thought Hobbs did a really good job managing on Friday night in one of the weirder games memory. He seemed to make the right moves and push the right buttons, and it paid off in a win.

The Bad
- Tygart seems to have developed (or redeveloped) his command issues. I'm not sure what we do about Saturdays, because I'm not sure Tygart can go more than 4 innings even on a good outing.
- Hopefully Diggs broke out of his funk, because he was slumping.
- Bullpen got eaten up, but it's probably not the worst thing for the freshmen to hit some adversity and grow from it.
- Our fielding (particularly in the OF) looked like 8U travel ball at times, and will likely be an area of focus this week. To be fair, Plainsman is an extremely weird park that isn't well lit in the outfield.
- We derped hard on the basepaths

Other
- Molina will be fine — he pitched okay, just couldn't hit his spots and still left the game with a 5-1 lead.
- Holt got very limited PT this weekend, only coming to the plate once for a PH strikeout. Curious what his role will be, but there's nowhere to platoon him in the IF if Stovall and Sandlot keep hitting.

Around the SEC
- Taking a look around the SEC, and the parity is on display.
- Vandy went from dominating Auburn last weekend to on the verge of getting swept by USCe.
- Mizzou finally won a game
- Most of the other series are going to end 2-1, with a ton of rubber matches today. I don't believe anyone can sweep except for Georgia and South Carolina, both of which would be against top 11 teams.

Solid write up.

We've been spoiled by having a big league infield the last several years.

Actually, I think we were pretty lucky to take 2 of 3 from Auburn. They left a LOT of guys in scoring position. However, we did what it took to win. Close games come from being ranked #1. Everyone will throw and play their best games against you. We have to weather the storm every weekend. Our bats sure need to wake up.

Unfortunately, I think this is likely who we are at the plate outside of someone doing a complete midseason 180 like Cali did last year.

McLaughlin, Stovall, Diggs, and Sandlot are our reliable hitters.

Aloy is Slavens 2.0 — a 3 outcome hitter who can hit the ball over the fence but is going to strike out on a lot of offspeed pitches, especially low and away (which was Slavens' achilles heel).

The outfielders (save for Diggs) are going to be crapshoots. Wilmsmeyer looks to be the weak link in this lineup.

White is the best hitting catcher but that's not saying a ton. I'm not sure he needs to DH on days where he's not catching.

We're going to have to manufacture runs with free base runners, clutch hits, and capitalizing on errors and mistakes.

Yeah, I'd think at least Holt would eventually DH in place of White.

Agreed - I think Holt should DH more on White's off days. Either him or Souza.
