Umps got it right. Teams should use this more often. Odds are either your pitcher will balk or the catcher will step up and create interference.

One of the incidents last night, that a lot of people are criticizing, was him trying to protect his best player from getting thrown out. The player was getting mouthy with the ump and Vitello jumped out there to take the ump's attention away from the player. As far as his reaction to the balk call, I've seen DVH do far worse. I wish there was a compilation video of DVH in his early days as a coach. He was much more vocal and animated than he is now. I remember friends, who were fans of other teams, telling me they thought he was an asshole and didn't like Arkansas baseball because of it.
There's no doubt Vitello has some maturing to do, but he's one helluva coach and recruiter. Tennessee baseball was pathetic before he got there and now they've been to 3 out of the last 4 CWS and he's only been their coach for six years. I wish we would have a chance at him after DVH hangs it up, but I think it would be a longshot at best.

Great recruiter, there's no argument there. But the rest of his game is not very good anymore, and hasn't been for a while. I've done this a half dozen times over the last few years on Woopig, and don't really care to rehash it all again. You think he's great, I don't.

That wasn't what I was intending to say at all. In hindsight we can look back and say it's mostly been downhill since 2021, but in the moment it would have looked like we were firing/forcing out a guy at the peak of his and the school's success. LSU did something similar to what you and others are suggesting, and it paid off. But Mainieri had clearly let their program slip below their pinnacle, while over the last six years Dave has had us exactly at our historical high point to date. Plus, unlike Tennessee and A&M, LSU actually is a program that is a notch above ours.

Texas is a baseball blue blood that's been a little down. That and the allure of playing for yiur best friend. Hard to beat.

A&M's stadium looks pretty nice, albeit kind of small. They supposedly have plans for a new one.
I can't imagine Douchenozzle would have taken the Texas job without a pretty solid guarantee that their facilities would be upgraded if not replaced.

We ordered some cup holders from Amazon that fit nicely on the seats in front of you without bothering the people actually sitting in those seats. I'll go back and find them and post the link. I think they were under $30 for three of them.

The schools that have added seating have mostly done so because they were way behind us, State, OM and LSU. We still have the second best stadium in the league behind Dudy Noble. The gap is wide to number three.

I think Wes Johnson would have to be at or near the top of their list. My gut feeling tells me that's who they'll hire. He's shown a willingness to move damn near every year if necessary. I'm not sure A&M is a better job though...there is a ton of talent in the Atlanta metro area that he should be able to get to Athens. Plus you don't have the whole beastiality thing going on there.

He went to Arlington. We migrated out here about 9 years ago. Collierville has some studs in their Junior/Soph class coming up along with a couple of seniors this year, they are stacked.
On another note, I ran into the #1 C nationally for the class of 2027 last night out in Millington in the parking lot. He told us before we started running that he would run us until we puked. This was an away game and the field turned the lights off after a while. If you didn't puke you sure felt like you wanted to. A few parents were mad, mine said that's why you don't play shitty with poor effort.
My Sr year the coach mentioned above was forced to resign and the interim coach was a soft ass and wouldn't know a baseball bat if it was shoved up his ass.
Talk to anybody that played for the 1st one and they will tell you they may have hated him then, but respect what he did for character and life skills. I definitely preferred the first one I mentioned.

As a first baseman (usually), I can't recall how many times we practiced rotations. In practice. On rundowns, and in situations like this. If your base isn't occupied any more, you're useless there. Go somewhere else and help out. When the catcher went to third, either the pitcher or the first baseman should be at home.
Loved the 3rd base coach when the runner gets up. No arm waving or excitement. He simply points to home.

I'm sure they thought they were taking it easy on me compared to what their parents did.

Honestly, it's not too off the mark.
They're in first in the SEC but don't stand out on the stat sheet. They've won a shitload of close games, but they don't score many runs and make hay by getting on base a lot due to free passes. The way they've won probably isn't sustainable, just like it wasn't for us last year.

"...it shall not be considered a violation if the catcher blocks the pathway in a legitimate attempt to field the throw..." he didn't have to have possession to be in the position he was.
malicious intent is a judgement call and while it may or may not have been be the case there, the uvsu coach made the right move to challenge.

Seems a little ridiculous that he was ejected, much much less suspended. I don't agree with that call. Catcher was fully blocking the plate and and a bit down the line in runners slide zone. Was he supposed to stop and tip toe around the catcher? Maybe I don't fully under the rule, but seems like wrong call and probably changed the outcome of the game.

IMO, Vandy is one you can cross off as any sort of contender. They lose the opening round game if Wright State's coach doesn't hand them the game, and then they don't piss a drop against Louisville. They remind me too much of our team the last 2 years in being over-reliant on pitching and defense to compensate for their weakness at the plate. You can only go so far if you can't hit.
I think Ole Miss is cooked as well. They threw everybody in their opening game loss, and then were in a tight game yesterday where they had to use more bullpen arms. I think they get bounced by Georgia Tech in the elimination game.

If it's a matchup of two teams that are not Top 8 "national" seeds, there is still a bidding process so theoretically Creighton could bid higher.
National seeds are guaranteed to host a Super if they get there.

To your last point, even this could be explained if the ball was moving right to left (from the pitcher's standpoint). It was decidedly not.

Burke was fine. One thing having an alumni of a team on there is they are very well in tune with their team. He pointed out the big difference this year between last year's UT team is defense and he's spot on. He wasn't too homerish, nor was Ben Mac for LSU. That's what bothered me the most about Roo's outing last night. LSU isnt really a powerful lineup. Especially in that park. Pitcher's should be pitching to contact. Root was not.

It is not just a college rule. This is also true in softball. From the MLB rulebook:
Rule 5.09(a)(12):
Under Official Baseball Rule 5.09(a)(12), the batter is out, the ball is dead, and runner(s) return to their original base(s) when an infielder intentionally drops a fair fly ball or line drive with runners on first, first and second, first and third, or bases loaded (with less than two out).
Note that the batter is not declared out in this situation if the infielder permits the ball to drop untouched to the ground except when the Infield Fly rule applies.
When an infielder deliberately drops a fair ball or a line drive to set up a double play situation, runners may safely return to the bases they occupied at the time of the pitch. The same application shall be made if an outfielder has come so close to the infield to set up a double play situation if he intentionally drops the ball.
Runners cannot advance under this rule. Umpires shall immediately call "Time," when, in their judgment, the ball is intentionally dropped.

I have been predicting Coastal as a finalist for a couple of weeks. Don't know if either Arkansas or LSU can beat them. But I don't know much about their pitching.
Coastal just looks like someone that you're going to have to outscore to win, and I don't mean in 1-0 games. ECU, Texas State, and Arkansas State each held them to 0 runs in a game but each of them also lost the 3-game series. In this 25-game winning streak they put up 8.2 runs per game, 205 runs total. One more run today will beat that average and it's just the 6th inning.

What's cool about this kid and I think I mentioned it, he's a better kid/guy than he is a baseball player. There would have been too much pressure for Tony to leave UT for Arkansas. Not only that but some of his stuff that grates on opposing fans' nerves would have been too fresh on everyone's memory. Few around here watch Giants games, so he'll be under the radar and Hog fans will have moved onto another villain by the time Dave hangs 'em up.

When Tony is competing with us for SEC titles and we have to watch his players act like douchebags, he's got our full attention. 99.9% of the people who watch Hog baseball won't see Tony as Giants manager once, or if they do it will only be when they're playing the Cards, Cubs, Braves, Astros, etc. twice per year.
