Are basketball players limited to the same transfer portal windows as football? The next one isn't until May 1, correct?
Quote from: Barton Fink on Mar 11, 2023, 03:51 PMMuss mentioned last year they contacted more portal players than what they were truly interested in.
I think some of that is smoke screens for sure, some of it is that it keeps getting recruiting nerds mentioning Arkansas (free advertising), some of it is no doubt saving face for losing a kid that they wanted.
I don't imagine this aforementioned list is in any representative of what we can expect. There may be a couple of those early portal guys we are going to be super interested in. I would hope that Muss had the light bulb come on that he needs shooting, ball handling and perhaps most importantly is leadership intangibles...something I'm not convinced is presently on the roster. Likewise grabbing up kids that have been at a different school every year of their eligibility does not smack of leadership.

for football it's the 45 days starting the day after the championship selections, plus the may 1st - 15th window.
for basketball it's the 60 days starting the day after the championship selections.
for baseball it's a december 1st-15th window, plus 45 days starting the day after the championship selections.

Thank you. So the portal opens tomorrow since the selection show is tonight?
according to the website i pulled that from, yes.
We obviously have to go for Messiah Jones. Yelena would be a fan.
Who departs from the roster?
Pinon, Dunning, Ford ? Do the Mitchells return?
i personally don't know why any of those freshmen leave. we're losing black, smith, kamani, and counsil for sure and if davis gets a combine invite, there's no reason for him to return. those guys will have an opportunity to see significantly more playing time.
have no idea about the mitchells.
I try not to apply any logic to guys hitting the portal anymore. It's literally up in the air each off-season no matter the sport.
We'll need some veteran guards regardless of how good the incoming freshman is...obviously I figure Ford, Pinion, and Dunning are going to get their opportunity to develop within the program. I know it's easier said than done but I really liked when we got Umude he was a guy that was a leader for that program and played 4 years...got that 5th year and took advantage. Tate too. Getting those small school guys that really want to prove some shit and tend to play with the urgency we seem to really lack on this current roster.
Quote from: DrMongoose on Mar 13, 2023, 11:02 AMWho departs from the roster?

I think Pinion stays, Dunning leaves, and Ford is 50/50.
I've heard that Diop was a lock, and Baye Fall was iffy. Then, when Fall committed, supposedly Muss told Diop that we weren't taking 2 bigs in this class. And in fact, Diop committed/signed with Colorado the same day Fall did with us. Plausible that it's true.
That leads me to believe either the Mitchells are staying, or Muss has some super secret under-the-table commits in the portal.
And hopefully that Brazile is coming back. I think he should be Muss's most important "recruiting" target in the present.
This kid would fit well with Muss.

We have had success with a rotund guy from Ft Worth before (Oliver Miller) but wasn't a headcase.

Semi related. From what I've seen, I don't think Fall will be a heavy contributor next year. If the Mitchells leave, we will need to find another big in the portal.

the kid has serious upside - can hit 3s, can play down low, he and Brazil would be very interesting.
We recruited him hard. He did really well at AA camps last year and many projected him as a lottery pick. He had the same issues at Oregon that he had in HS, questionable motor. Kid has all the talent in the world.
Intriguing for sure. Might be why we didn't take Diop w/ Fall. But unless he has a serious change in attitude/approach to his game, I don't see Muss giving him serious minutes...potential be damned.
He lost serious millions by underachieving this year when this summer's draft is very thin on bigs. But it still kinda surprises me that he's heading to a different school rather than taking what he can get with a 2nd round grade at this point. Maybe his handler or whatever talked some sense into him and he'll step it up. Top 10, lottery potential there.

Brazile comes back for $50.
Walsh comes back for $25.
Transferring to another school voids the wager. This only applies to declaring for the NBA or returning to Arkansas.
Deal?
Love Devo's statement today, he's playing this brilliantly.
Brazile had pushed himself up to end of the 1st round and may have risen farther before the injury but largely dropped out of the draft. He had to come back, and he wanted to be at UA.
I bet we get him for one more year and he's a solid 1st rounder. He has a terrific and diverse skill set for modern NBA positionless basketball.

I am noticing a trend now where players are going into the portal and allowing their prior school to recruit them...again. It's weird but I guess when it comes to what we all know this is about (MONEY) then if the prior school can pony up then I reckon they've got a real shot.
I still say the best transfers are going to be the older guys like Umude was coming from a smaller gig wanting to prove himself at the higher level of college. Taking kids from a higher level that have either already proven their worth or disproven it aren't necessarily going to get you anywhere. It's a delicate balance obviously.
Pick up those unselfish players that have been in systems where they were well coached and wanting to push their games to a new level in the hopes of a NBA/professional career. That guard at Georgetown that has impressive stats...I don't know anything about the kid. I do know Georgetown sucked balls and this kid was probably their only option. His stats don't mean a helluva lot. A guy like that you just have to have someone really trained to see if he's got more upside with better players around him or was he only getting stats because there were literally no other options.

well depends on what they get but certainly this fills a Chris Lykes type of role on the team...something we really didn't have on this past season's team. We sorely lacked an experienced facilitator at times throughout the season, our offense looked terrible at times. UCONN owned us with ball movement and our issues compared to them was glaring. Beyond it all the one thing these guys just never really looked like was a team. They didn't play well together. Several individual athletes were impressive but their games didn't complement each other and the coaching staff has to do a better job of figuring that shit out.

If sweet 16 is a down year (which for all the hype coming in, it really was) then a sweet 16/elite 8 showing on a rebuild year with the promise of greater things to come would be great. Jesus, talk about a 180 on team style/look if we signed him too. I don't think schools can really do that so much since kids can leave at any time. You might commit to a kid being a 4 year kid that gets PT the last two and he leaves after 2 or 3 so a wasted spot for those years. The whole math is fucked up now and you can only count on a kid this year and not next.

This is no surprise to me. He's brought in 3 guards from the portal. A guy like Dunning who saw no playing time this year is thinking his future looks dim. And someone will probably pay him some money.
I think the only "4 year players" you will ever see these days will be someone like Devo. Reasonably highly rated in high school, but not the elite. But someone who gets to school and outperforms his high school ranking, primarily through hard work and defense. Not quite good enough to attract the pro attention, but maybe a helluva good college player. And many of them will really probably only be 3 year players.

I don't like it, but I agree. Everything is a one year contract at this point. The coach, the players. It's now "what is the best move I can make for this year for me" for all involved.

I don't like it from a simple point of it would be nice to keep a core group of guys from one year to the next. We'll still probably have some of that. I get that Dunning wasn't going to play and they wanted that spot to go to a more developed kid. Devo is one of those kids that was forced into action and shined when his number was called. The difference between a Devo and a lot of these kids is the opportunity under fire. One way or the next this roster is going to be loaded with "3 to 4 year guys" just not our 3 or 4 year guys and I guess that's my larger point. You recruited these guys for a reason why not remain committed to their development? This isn't meant to throw shade on the Muss staff but on the same token I fully anticipate Dunning was asked to portal as I expect others like the twins were told to pack their bags.
Looks like we're gonna get a commit from El Ellis. PG from Louisville. Averaged 18pts and 5 ast per. Was by far the best player on a bad team.

For players that commit for four years the old fashion way, I'm not a fan of forcing them out for transfers if that's what happened.
But the minute they start focusing on NIL deals and what not, they put themselves in the professional athlete category, and it's all a business decision for both sides at that point.
I haven't seen anything about Dunning that would put him in the second category. So it probably is a little sad, but that's just the current state of college sports.

It is, but he was probably going to get a new guy brought in ahead of him each year he was here, so going ahead and telling him was probably the best we could do for him.
Muss seems to be following the Bobby Petrino "my job is to recruit somebody better than you are" model. I like it.
"That's the guy you don't need to worry about" to "this is the best thing for both of us" to you're out on the street. It's a business. I hate it but I hate losing more.
In a perfect world we would be taking some of these guys back when they've gone out and improved their games and wanted to return to be hogs later in their careers. A Chance Moore type guy could come back but I don't think he did much this past season playing at Missouri State or wherever.

Probably not his choice, the kid was always Razorback through and though. Best of luck to him.

It seems for Muss that if you cannot shoot but can play defense, you at least must be 6-5 or taller.
Every Sunbelt team has 6-2 guards who cannot shoot very well.

Seeing some ponderings that Kobe Brown could be portaling to Arkansas soonish. I don't see it happening esp with #15 having announced he's coming back.
Wouldn't he have to sit out a year since the deadline passed to transfer within the SEC without penalty? If not, it would be worth it just to watch the Mizzou fanbase meltdown. Not to mention we'd be really fucking good.

No. He would be a grad transfer. The restrictions don't apply if you are a graduate.
Treating methu like a minor league feeder system/farm team. I like it
makhel mitchell and kk robinson to ualr.

I have some good friends who are big UALR supporters, but they hate Darrell Walker. They say he is an asshole. Will be interesting to see what he can do with these two.
Well this should be interesting.

sure, he's mediocre but what else is he going to do?
This may or may not be true but my Dad told me once that AP&L tried Rocket Crockett as a meter reader after he flamed out - long legs or something like that - but he wasn't any good at it.
I mean, I wish him the best but what does he think he's going to do at Mizzou and/or in the SEC this go round? Shirley he doesn't think he's going to make it professionally. Why not stay at ORU or go to some smaller school where you can dominate, or hell...come home to UALR w/ our other retreads?

He hasn't put on any weight that I can tell. I saw him at Walmart a week ago.
My kid (whose pic I've posted here) has as much muscle definition and mass, and he's 5'10".

If the best he does is play in some country for a few years that we didn't realize had a pro league, and comes out of it with a few hundred thou in the bank, he will be ahead of 99% of the late 20's crowd that doesn't have a lot of Dad's money.
If I was his coach, I'd lock him in a room with nothing but a TV. It would be playing a continuous loop of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shooting sky hooks.
I have seen him at the LRAC and instead of lifting weights or working on post moves, he was mostly just jacking up 3s.

So you would encourage him to quit? That would be the only reasonable response to studying Kareem and Olajuwon.
His best choice was probably to go dominate at UCA. He'll have a hard time at Missouri, except for when he goes for 30 and 15 against us.

I don't see how asking him to study the footwork of a great basketball player is asking him to quit. He could do so much more on the inside if his footwork were better.
Every coach that's ever allowed him to role-play as a 3-point shooter has done him a huge disservice.

Honestly, he is too thin to play "big man" basketball. He is too slow to put the ball on the court and drive. All he has is shooting. Even then he has to be wide open.
When the fuck is that ND dude going to decide. I need some good news to be happy about or bad news to justify spending some money on stupid shit.
I'd love to see Nelson and Brazile on the court at the same time. For anyone that hasn't seen his highlights you need to go do it. That guy is a stone cold killa.

Agree. I think that's one of our best selling points. He may be the man at Bama but he and Brazile would complement each other very well on both ends of the court.
