The parentheses use needs some work. Two were opened, but only one was closed.

Bama isn't the kind of fanbase to donate to the NIL to support basketball.

If you know you ain't making shit in the pros or won't sniff the pros but still seen as a commodity in college basketball you have to maximize your worth.

I think they should take that super senior thing and reward guys that stayed thru graduation at ONE place...gets them a free year or eligibility

Fix the portal rules.

Easy fix. You have to regulate NIL more. Put an exemption on one transfer, but after that you get capped on NIL earnings for each subsequent transfer. You can't keep upping the ante with multiple transfers.

The capitalist side of me says it's wrong to restrict a person's ability to earn income and for that person to maximize their value.

Should we cap your income after you change jobs X number of times?

Should coaches be capped after they have moved X number of times?

I doubt I could take a new job 3 or more times in 4/5 years (especially if it was lateral moves like many of these kids do from p5 to p5) without the very least having to do some heavy explaining in the interview process. I get that the kids need to maximize their pay, but there can exist a universe where college athletes earn for their performance and the institutions (and the fans that are largely supporting their NIL) are protected with some kind of contractual enforcement.

Only thing that would really prompt a change in NIL is if a little ole school like Arkansas created an advantage.

Seems the most fair thing to do would be for schools and players enter into contracts that protect both parties.

From the schools perspective, maybe that contract could include non competes and claw back of monies paid.  For example, a contract could be executed that stipulates that a player on scholarship has to reimburse the school for the years he received free education, housing, food, etc.  Maybe there should be buy out clauses.

If these guys and gals are adults and employees, then they should play by the same rules as regular working joes.

One I'd like to see for football players is a balloon payment added to the end which is only payable if the athlete plays in his team's bowl game (if they go to one).

the nil deals these guys get are thru contracts. the player is required to fill certain obligations - card signings, pimping a product, public appearances, etc.

you see some of them enter the portal and then take forever to announce where they are going, jefferson and sanders come to mind. they were waiting for their deal(s) to come to an end.

I agree you should be able to maximize your earning potential. It's just never affected the best sports model, college sports, in such a way before. At least not in a way that wasn't inherently illegal by NCAA rules.

The only group who can stop this is donors seeking players to promote their products, or boosters who want their teams to win games.

Winning is everything. No matter the cost. It's the American way.

It happens where I work all the time. It isn't a lateral move if you're getting more money and/or playing time.

In your interview process scenario - "A new opportunity presented itself and I felt I would be able to grow more with this opportunity". "The new position wasn't what I was made to believe it was when I accepted the position". All sorts of easy explanations for this.

Where I work there are TONS of people that do this. They are chasing the almighty dollar.

Yeah, it would be a bit different for me. In research, many projects can take the better part of a year or multiple years to complete. If I'm bouncing from lab to lab, I'm not likely to have any tangible results (published papers mainly) that would make me attractive to a new PI.

My first three years of college were at tthe different universities and no one gave a shit.

It's fair to allow student athletes the same courtesy.

Depends on the setup. I know people have transfered within places like the Salk Institute, but many of us (those that have yet to earn our PHD) work directly under what is essentially an independent contractor (even though many are under the umbrella of the university).

Been thinking about this too. Just like the talking heads began to minimize our hire by saying Cal was just beating the mob out of town, I'm sure they will belittle any championship runs as something different than what the true blue bloods are doing in the current climate. They'll do it "the right way", while we're buying manufactured titles.

I'm just going to assume Cal is in on every high level transfer as a "water-is-wet" state of normal operations, just to save me from the anticipation/letdown. Though this guy would definitely help add instant leadership and high level talent. Kid is an improved scorer (40% from 3 and 80% from the stripe) and has really good handles. Me want.

But I think it'll have to start happening across NCAAFB before we really see change...that's where the real dollars are and that may take a minute. We need to fully exploit this while we have our chance. It's our time for a change.

yeah, i'm a little skeptical. where was his money when it was needed to buy pittman out or at least a couple of good o-linemen?

Maybe big money sees basketball as the biggest return on their investment. You can spend a mil in NIL and get 2 really good starters and a decent bench player. That's a significant contribution to building a championship in a sport where only 7-8 players see meaningful minutes. Compare that to football where you would need to buy a two deep on both lines and a hell of a qb to even sniff an opportunity at glory.

Or maybe he's just a big fan of how Bobby called them a bunch of slapdicks, and sees basketball as the best place to hurt them.

There may be a conflict of interest if he provided NIL for football. For some reason I think I read that somewhere.

Perhaps our big money honkeys were too busy making money to understand what NIL was. Now that they see other schools legally buying players they're "all in".

And I agree with the consensus. If Arkansas starts to dominate the NIL game, the rules will change. No one likes Arkansas achieving greatness, at anything.

A small thing, but another sign of the times.  The NBA doesn't list "College" any more.  I was looking up Anthony Edwards of the Timberwolves (I thought he was Kentucky), and saw that it is now listed as LAST ATTENDED.  (His was Georgia).

I guess when you're on a new team every year LAST ATTENDED makes as much sense as anything.

I tried watching a few games last year.  I couldn't do more than a few trips up and down the court.  It was tough to watch.

Now I'll say this, it doesn't seem like it is just the Ladybacks.

There are 4-8 elite teams in the country which are a pleasure to watch.  There still miss layups and such but the game is actually a much more pure product.  Once you get past those 4-8 teams though the quality diminishes greatly.

I think the Women's NCAA tournament beginning at the Elite 8 will grow in popularity but all the other games will be tuned out.  Clark played like a guy from a jump shot perspective which isn't most women.  She was exciting and there was a compelling story to go along with her game.  Now that she is gone I think it reverts back to what it has always been.

Of course she's getting endorsements, and deservedly so.  Probably would have gotten the same deal had she gone back to Iowa for another year.  It's not like Nike is banking on that sweet exposure from the least profitable pro sports league (including virtually all minor league baseball and hockey).

Battle is a classic "good stats, bad team" guy. He relies on being ball dominant and drawing fouls. He's below average finishing at the rim and he's maybe a slightly above average three point shooter. He's trash on defense. I don't see the need for him with the talent Cal is bringing in right now.

I know we all got a good chuckle at how the jellies were taking it on the chin during the hiring process, but Pope is putting together a pretty good team from the portal. In addition to the okie st center, they nabbed Lamont Butler from SD St and probably the best pure shooter in Koby Brea. Next season should be really interesting.

I fully expect UNC,Duke,Kansas, and Kentucky to be relevant almost every single year in basketball, almost no matter who their coach is, and at least recruit high level talent. Cal brought a different caliber of recruit to KY, with not only his name but KY's blue blood, but probably didn't manage the portal with the high school guys well enough to have a "mature" enough team to compete in the tournament environment but I think he's seen the light or been given the resources to adapt and has that chip on his shoulder.

Kentucky and Arkansas are both right therein the portal rankings in 247. Not a big shocker. Cal is going to recruit at a high level here on his rep and Kentucky is going to continue to recruit at a high level on their name and history.

Kentucky is bringing in a lot of decent role players, but so far no great ones.  At least none that have shown themselves to be great thus far.  They should be able to shoot well, but defense and shot creation look to be lacking.

Their fans are jizzing themselves over the prospect of getting Jaxson Robinson.  Yes, the same one who played here, and at A&M, and most recently at BYU.

I had higher hopes but after seeing him for a few series in a real game I had less higher hopes.

Though it was tough to grade any QB last season with no blockers

Seems like all the kids that portalled out also portalled UP which brings us to the questions no one in the media is asking and very concerning given the state of the women's game as a whole since there are still only about 15-20 quality teams.

Why did they want out and why couldn't we win with them? Not sure how the foreign kids Mike is bringing in will fare better.
