Your previously #1 Arkansas Razorbacks take on the South Carolina COCKS for a three game road series beginning tomorrow at 6:00 PM. Second game is Saturday at 2:00PM and the final game is Sunday at 12:30 PM. All games will be shown on SECN+. Hopefully, we can come out of our road games woes and take this series. Our fielding has been great. If we can ever get our pitching and hitting going at the same time, look out. As usual, GO HOGS!
And now, your Bob Uecker quote for the game:
I think my top salary was maybe in 1966. I made $17,000 and 11 of that came from selling other players' equipment.

Swap out Jones for Wilmsmeyer (in LF with Holt in CF) and this may be our best lineup.
I can take play-by-play if needed, with the caveat that in about 15-20 minutes I'm going to quickly scarf down some food and may need a brief sub.

Quote from: Cardiac Hog on Apr 19, 2024, 09:22 PMDVH with some questionable decisions tonight. Hopefully this one works out
Wilmsmeyer in the starting lineup, PHing Helfrick in a 2 out bases loaded high leverage spot, and inserting Foutch in the 7th were definitely head scratchers.
I legit don't understand why he keeps giving Wilmsmeyer chances. He's a decent glove but an automatic out with zero pop and not anywhere near good enough defensively to compensate for just how terrible he is at the plate.
It's crazy because he's had someone PH for Wilmsmeyer numerous times this season. He obviously doesn't trust him at the plate.
I'd rather give those AB's to Edmunson or Lovich and roll with Holt in CF.
Thanks for the pbp. The ghost of Tanner English has been buttfucked by Ragnar the rattlesnake killing hog.

Both were good hitters who went into a tailspin after a shoulder injury, in which case Stovall had to be shut down. Diggs looks absolutely lost at the plate right now.
Let Diggs DH till he is healthy. Put Holt in LF, Edmundson in CF, and Jones in RF. DVH said Souza has been taking balls in the OF. Maybe he could play RF.

Quote from: Barton Fink on Apr 20, 2024, 09:21 AMSurprised we haven't seen Robinett hit this year. He showed promise with some pop last year.
I think his only spots are 1B or DH.
McLaughlin is firmly cemented at 1B (he's been really good defensively there) and is probably our most reliable hitter.
I am shocked he hasn't been given a shot at DH since that's been a bit of a revolving door this year. Wagner is a strikeout-or-home run guy and Helfrick seems to be a high power low average type of guy as well.
He came in and hit the big home run in the 10th against LSU in game 1 last year, and then dropped off the face of the earth.

3 of the top 4 in runs scored are also 3 of the top 4 in fewest runs allowed. Hint: it's the other three teams surrounding us in the national rankings.
Ugly AB by Jones.
Those last 2 swings were bad.
Once again we don't piss a drop at the plate with RISP
14 & 13 LOB in the last 2 games, respectively.
Jones has been a tremendous disappointment.

Some positives heading into the second game.
We did hit a lot of balls hard in this one. Most were at someone or, in the case of Holt's single off the wall, a few inches from doing real damage.
The team didn't quit.
We were able to get through the first two games without using McEntire. Still have Foutch available, maybe even Gaeckle for a batter or two, and of course Hewlett for a lefty.
SC used their Friday guy today to dodge Smith, and pitched their closer for over three innings. We should have the advantage there.
Get two out of three and you leave happy anytime you're on the road in the SEC.

True, but in DVH's defense, it was tough to foresee Wilmsmeyer being a hole in the roster, Diggs getting hurt and going into a tailspin, DH being a revolving door of inconsistency, and now Sandlot's injuries (which takes one of the more reliable bats out of the lineup).

This team never makes anything easy, so you know damn well we'll give up 6 runs in the 7th and 8th and it'll be a nail biter 9th.

Nah big nuts Willy Mac is in
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Apr 20, 2024, 05:47 PMPetry is in his own head as much as any of our guys.
It was the same last year in our series.
He came in getting lauded as a Golden Spikes candidate, went 1-11 with 7 K's, and was a pouty bitch for the entire series and wasn't right for the rest of the season.
Top of the eighth. Please stop saying "crooked numbers."
Stovall leads off. Goes down swinging. 1 away.
McLaughlin grounds out sharply to second. 2 away.
Aloy grounds out to first unassisted.
Hogs lead 9-2 mid 8.
Bottom of the eighth. Will we give up any runs? Will we shit the bed? Stay tuned.
Messina walks.
Petry goes down looking. 1 away.
Noland grounds to Aloy behind the bag at second. He flips to second but the ball is dropped. Runners at first and second, 1 out.
Pinch hitter Jackson doubles to the corner in right. Run scores. 9-3 Hogs. Runners at second and third, 1 out.
Reeves grounds one off the foot of Willie Mac. Run scores. Runners at the corners, 1 out. 9-4 Hogs.
Next up with a sac fly to left. Sliding catch by Lovich. Run scores. 9-5 Hogs. 2 away.
Causey in to pinch hit. Hits one to the wall in center. Wilmsmeyer makes the catch for the out.
Hogs lead 9-5 after 8.
Those low pitches are strikes for us.

As I was saying

told my wife the same thing. Very one sided.
Holy shit we are fucking dumb. What was Lovivh doing casually throwing the ball back in on that catch?
He goes home and that runner doesn't try to run from third.

Mac definitely doesn't get the strike calls on the cutter and the fastball low in the zone like Kopps did.

I think he legit forgot there was a guy on third
That one scared me.

Me, too. I thought it was out.
Top of the ninth. We will need another run or two. Quinn in to pitch for SC. (RHP)
Diggs leads off. Flies out to short left. 1 away.
Souza goes down swinging. 2 away.
Wilmsmeyer grounds out to the pitcher.
Hogs lead 9-5 mid 9.

Was wondering the same. Maybe he intentionally threw it to 2nd to avoid allowing the runner at 1st to tag and get in scoring position.
But given the difficulty of that catch and the fact the runner at 3rd has to come back to the bag, he probably could've thrown him out at home.
Souza has quietly had a terrible weekend.
Souza will chase that low inside shit every time.
Man, look at all those Carolina fans dressed up as empty seats...
Bottom of the ninth. Do we have three quick outs left in us? Gage Wood in to pitch.
Ellis leads off. Full count. Doubles down the right field line. QUIT PUTTING THE LEAD HITTER ON!
Brinling runs the count full. Grounds out to first unassisted. Runner moves to third. 1 away.
Funky Cold Messina grounds too short. The throw to first is short and McLaughlin can't handle it. Run scores. Runner at first, 1 out. 9-6 Hogs.
Petry fouls out to third. 2 away.
Noland goes down looking.
HOGS WIN 9-6!
Our SS needs to work on his throws to first.

Wood over Hewlett?
Does DVH have money on SC?
Devo hit a double

It's insane to me how much we do this.
Good series win. Like all SEC teams, SC is tough.
Finally got that low strike call.

We can never do it easy. Drama is a way of life for us.
Good to see guys hitting. Glad Diggs got a few.
34-6.
For someone who's supposedly all world, we sure do own Petry's ass.
He was 0-12 with 6 K's and stranded 6 runners by himself.
And that's after going 1-11 with 7 K's against us last year.

Oh man. Just when we thought we had our wives put away for the evening.
Really good series win!
Two tough road series left, but as long as we take care of business at home, then I feel good about a Top 8 seed.
I'll feel better about Omaha if our bats will stop disappearing for 18 innings at a time.

The only optimistic thing about the bats is that they vanished early enough that there IS time for them to come back, vs them vanishing at the end of the year when it is too late.
If you'd have told me we'd go 4-1 against Tech and SC, I'd have taken that in a heartbeat.
We may not have looked pretty doing it, but those are two good teams, one of them on the road which has been our Achilles heel somewhat this year.

Exactly. A series win on the road against a good team is always a good thing.
I still don't think we know how good our team really is. Which is crazy considering we are sitting at 34-6, 14-4 in conference.

We always seem to get timely hits, except when we don't. Which sounds incredibly obvious and stupid, except what I mean is, there's a third category, overwhelming people with offense and hits and runs, that does not describe our offense at all.
We're either just enough, or nothing. But obviously at 34-6 we are "just enough" wayyyyyy more than not.
That is what gives me the most hope. Baseball is, more often than not, a game of 'getting hot' and it is contagious. We haven't really been 'hot' at the plate all year where we just pile up hits and beat the shit out of teams in more than one game. If recent history is any indicator, that is exactly what it takes to win the CWS. Even more than great pitching, getting hot seems to be it. That is how Mississippi state and Ole Miss won it all, they got hot. They weren't the best team, but sure the fuck were the hottest at the end.
I can dream that something like that happens to us. We struggle some and then a few players snap out of it and get hot and that carries us through the whole thing. We certainly have the pitching and just need the hitting to get it.
Also, maybe it is time to look for a new hitting coach...
Last two posts sun it up pretty well
Seeing guys like Condon, Montgomery, and Caglione tear it up doesn't help either. Seeing HRs be way up and our power being down makes it feel worse than it probably is.

If the worst thing we've got going for us is only winning 60+% of our games on the road, we're in pretty good shape.

I've been listening to the podcast
Highway To Hoover lately. Highly recommend it for any SEC baseball junkies out there.
Anyway, they had an episode fairly recently where they talked about the oddity of some stats. Specifically, they talked about how Vanderbilt actually commits a very low number of errors, but that they disproportionately lead to runs. Similarly, they talked about an insane number of homers Cags hits are solo (and thus mitigating the damage to opponents).
Baseball's weird like that. You boot a grounder with runners at the corners and 1 scores. You drop a pop fly with a runner at 1st and still have a chance for the force at 2nd. Conversely, a veritable Golden Spikes shoe-in like Cags blasts a solo homer 450 feet and it's worth the same number of runs as a sub-Mendoza Line guy like Rowland hitting an oppo RBI single with a runner on 2nd.
