Title: Hogs vs Kentucky—-Baseball
Post by: Son of Spam on May 02, 2024, 07:57 AM
Your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Kentucky Jellycats for a three game series beginning this Friday at 5:30 on SECN+. Second game is on Saturday at 1:00 on SECN+ and finally on Sunday at 12:00 on SECN+. This should be a tough series as Kentucky is pretty salty this year. Here's hoeing our pitching doesn't suck and our bats come alive. (That last part was a joke, so here's hoping we string some timely hits together). THIS is the game Calipari should throw out the first pitch. As usual, GO HOGS!

And now, your Bob Uecker quote for the game:

When I looked at the third base coach, he turned his back on me.

Bob Uecker

Also, no PBP by me for any of these games. I will be tied up and may not even be able to watch. So someone take up my slack!

I should be at Sunday's game. Seems they have a big lawn area, similar to the Hog Pen, I will probably get a ticket there. If any other woopiggers will be there...

I can potentially take PxP duties for one game. However, I'd be remiss if I don't remind you that I've done them for 3 of our losses this year plus the first half of game 1 against Tech when we were getting our brains beat in (I gave up in the 5th and we promptly came back and won).

That's the part I don't get. I can understand if the metrics say college baseball doesn't move the needle, but half the time they're putting on the 4th replay of the regional cornhole championships or freaking frisbee golf instead of what would be a pivotal and highly entertaining ncaa matchup.

Just to beat the dead horse even more, we don't even mention the perfectly good SEC Network alternate channel anymore that they have refused to use for anything for years.

We have tickets Friday behind the dugout as well.  Two of my teenagers have fallen in love with Arkansas baseball and this will be their first game.  Hopefully the weather holds off.  We are hoping to head to Baum for regionals too if we can get tickets.

Go to the icon that shows NCAA baseball under "Leagues". Then scroll along. Also, it may not be there yet.

Edit: I just checked. It isn showing yet, but if you search Arkansas Baseball on the app, the games are there.

Well, hell. Guess I will try PBP for a little while. In the top of the first, we got Stovall to second somehow before our third out.

Bottom of the first.

Waldschmidt flies out to right.

Pitre flies out to right. 2 away.

Smith runs the count full. Goes down swinging.

0-0 after 1.

Top of the second. Sparse crowd.

Holt leads off. Singles to third. The throw bounces to first and drags the first baseman off the bag. 1 on.

Helfrick hits one down the left field line, just foul. 2-2 count. Takes ball three, a wild pitch. Holt moves to second. Helfrick walks. Runners at first and second, no outs.

Diggs watches strike one. Now 1-2. Goes down swinging. 1 away.

White grounds to third. The throw goes to second for the force. White safe at first.  Runners at the corners, 2 away.

Wilmsmeyer grounds to short. The throw goes to second for the force.

Pooser (snicker) with 42 pitches through 2.

Hogs strand 2. 0-0 mid second.

Daly goes down swinging. 2 away.

Nicholson (no kin to Jack) goes down looking.

If first pitch is a ball, he'll do good.

If first pitch is a strike, he'll watch it and then the at bat will be a disaster.

Exactly what happened on his 2 run double.

First pitch was a ball high (wasn't close). 1-0
Second pitch was a slider way outside. 2-0
Next pitch was a fastball right down Broadway that he smoked into the gap.

He's been quietly struggling in SEC play and has been undisciplined at the plate. He strikes out a lot. He's second only to Diggs in strikeouts in SEC games with far fewer ABs than the rest of the lineup (next closest is Aloy who has almost 30 more ABs).

Since the Ole Miss series he's been 3-25 with 13 K's in conference play.

Not saying the kid can't turn it around, but he's been quietly slumping and striking out at a high rate lately.

Also, we appreciate Hagen but not enough. He's having an unreal season. Of all the great arms we've had over the years, can't think of any I'd take over him. Kopps is closest but it's not a straight comparison.

He's our best ever, to this point.

Agreed. I've been struck by similar thoughts lately like "damn, I think I'm taking for granted how good this guy is."

He gave up 1 earned in 6 innings and his ERA went UP to 1.36. That's an incredibly low number this deep into the SEC slate. He's striking out nearly 2 batters an inning (1.86 per IP).

We've seen some great pitchers come through this program, but none have been better than Hagen. Ironically, my favorite memory ever of him hasn't been from a start, but making Roc Riggio take a knee with a with the bases loaded in the Stillwater Regional finals in 2022.

Most of it isn't his fault.

The ground ball that he deflected (hard to blame the guy for trying to make a play) would have gotten him out of the 2nd unscathed, as would the Lovich fly ball.

Lovich lines out to SS. 3 outs.

Mid 4th. 3-2 them.

Title: Re: Hogs vs Kentucky—-Baseball

Bottom 4th.

McCoy singles to LF.  Runner on 1st, 0 out.

Smith walks.  Runners 1st and 2nd, 0 out.

And that will do it for Tygart.

PITCHING CHANGE:  Gage Wood in for Tygart.

Brady didn't have his best stuff today, but it's important to remember that if our left fielder could catch a fucking fly ball that he was camped under this would still be a 2-0 Hog lead.

(Editor's Note:  this may be the worst camera angle from behind the pitcher we have seen all year.  It seems like the camera is positioned at about a 30 degree angle to the line directly from home plate to the mound.)

Waldschmidt walks.  Bases loaded, 0 out.  Bourbon hats engaged.

Pitre doubles to RF.  Two runs score.  5-2 Kentucky.  Runners 2nd and 3rd, still no fucking outs.

Burkes bunts, tagged out by McLaughlin.  Run scores.  6-2 Kentucky.  Runner on 3rd, 1 out.

Lopez singles to CF.  7-2 Kentucky.  Runner on 1st, 1 out.

Might be time to punt this one and get ready for tomorrow.

Daly grounds into a 6-4-3 to mercifully end this inning.  3 outs.

End 4th.  7-2 bad guys.

He's now 3-28 (.108) with 15 strikeouts in our last 4 SEC series.

At this point I'd rather Helfrick be our DH when he's not catching. He has nearly as many walks (4) as Souza (5) in a third of the AB's.

Okay, Arkansans came to the Bluegrass State and took their most cherished prize, the Kentucky Derby trophy.  We just took a shit all over their second most treasured entity by stealing their Hall of Fame coach, forcing them to replace him with a 6'9" goober who is recruiting at a level that would win the Sun Belt if things break just right.  Let's finish the weekend off by taking something that, judging by attendance, is absolutely meaningless to the average Kentuckian...a series win over their top ten baseball team.

First pitch is at 12pm GCT.  Lineups are as follows:

YOUR ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS:

1. Peyton Stovall 2B
2. Wehiwa Aloy (not Alloy) SS
3. Ben McLaughlin (not McLocklin) 1B
4. Jared Sprague-Lott 3B
5. Kendall Diggs RF
6. Peyton Holt CF
7. Parker Rowland DH
8. Hudson White C
9. Will Edmunson LF

P. Mason Molina LHP

Kentucky Afterthoughts:

1. Ryan Waldschmidt LF
2. Emilien Pitre (FUCK CANADA) 2B
3. Devin Burkes C
4. Nick Lopez DH
5. Mitchell Daly 3B
6. Ryan Nicholson 1B
7. Nolan McCarthy CF
8. James McCoy RF
9. Grant McSmith SS

P. Mason Moore RHP.

I don't know that he's guessing, but he's back to not being able to pick up spin.

He's got to learn how to lay off the slider.  Rarely if ever do pitchers throw it to him in the zone because they know he can destroy it if he makes contact.  Piss on it and make them throw you the fastball or change up.

Yep. We're absolutely kidding ourselves if we think this is an Omaha team. Hell, I think the Supers might be a stretch at this point.

We unequivocally can't hit, we have too many holes in the lineup at any given time, we can't win away from Baum, and outside of the best pitcher in college baseball (who we practically refuse to give run support to) our pitching is fairly average.

I also think DVH's ride or die stubbornness with guys like Diggs, Wilmsmeyer, Rowland, McEntire, and Wood is going to be our undoing.

Top 8th.

Rowland flies out to deep LF. 1 out.

White flies out to shallow LF.  2 outs.

Edmunson strikes out looking.  Bad call, but with this ump you can't take one that's close with two strikes.  3 outs.

Mid 8th.  Go Ahead And Run Rule Us 7. So We Can Regroup for Next Week 3

Trotting Rowland out there for a 4th AB when he's 0-3 with a groundout, strikeout, and GIDP is coaching malpractice.

Bottom 8th.

McCoy grounds out to 2nd.  1 out.

Smith grounds out to Aloy.  2 outs.

Waldschmidt flies out to Diggs in deep RF. 3 outs.

End 8th.  7-3 them.

Top 9th, top of the order. Let's at least make it interesting.

Stovall says FUCK YO COUCH TIM COUCH.  A 9th inning bomb to RF.  7-4 UK. 0 outs.

PITCHING CHANGE:  Hummel in for O'Brien.

Aloy strikes out swinging.  1 out.

McLaughlin hit by pitch.  Runner on 1st, 1 out.

Sprague-Lott walks.  Runners 1st and 2nd, 1 out.

Diggs flies out to shallow CF.  Runners 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Holt flies out to the track in RF.  3 outs.

Hogs lose 7-4.

Diggs needs to be hitting last in the lineup. Put someone up there who can bring in some RISP. Not sure who that is right now, but there has to be someone who can make contact. And Rowland as DH?!? Give me a break.

DVH made some head scratching moves this weekend.

Diggs batting where he is in the lineup.
Going with Wood over Gaeckle in game 2.
Wilmsmeyer getting the start in game 1.
Edmunson over Lovich in game 3.
Rowland at DH (and not getting PH for) in game 3.
McEntire instead of Gaeckle in a manageable deficit situation in game 3.

As someone said earlier in this thread, we recruit incredibly well and we have excellent facilities, we're just not developing hitters and that's 100% on Nate Thompson.

Who's the last recruited hitter who actually progressed under his tutelage? Cayden Wallace?

Hopefully, DVH is just showing these guys that they can lose and may be trying to get their heads out of their asses. Lovich cost us 2 runs in game 2, but would be a better DH than Rowland. Lovich has done that same thing in the field twice this year. I think we take 2 of 3 from Ms. State at home, then lose at least 2 to eATMe. We will host a regional, but it will be debatable if we come out of it.

Phil said it on the radio in the late innings but the Hogs are coming down to the wire and still don't have that LF spot figured out.

I'm to the point where I think Jones deserves a decent shot.

In his postgame presser after game 3, DVH sounded pissed about the hitting.

Basically said we're not getting the big hit when we need it and we're not hitting with RISP.

He also sounded a frustrated with Molina and how inefficient he is and how he gets to high pitch counts early. We're now 0-3 in his last three starts, and we're 3-4 in SEC games he starts (14-3 in the rest of our SEC games).

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a shakeup in the rotation and Molina potentially go to the bullpen or get shut down for a bit.

Some great Arkansas coach said all sickness is not death.  We're going to host a regional no matter what.  Hosting a Super-Regional is still up in the air.  3-3 or better, we will.  0-6 we won't.  1-5 or 2-4, toss up.  Our lead pitcher is still awesome.  Our bats are death right now and "not getting the key hit" is simply regression to the mean since that's ALL we were getting in the first 3/4 of the season.  Of course we're going to hit a stretch when we're not.

If our pitching and hitting once again converge about Sunday of the Regional weekend, and stay together the next couple of weeks, we have a shot at the whole thing, which is always a crapshoot anyway.  Sometimes a simple pop fly is the difference between dogpile and agony.

I'd be intrigued by Gaeckle in a starter/opener role. He's our most reliable, consistent pitcher outside of Hagen.

DVH won't do it since he's too valuable right now in a twice a weekend closer/high leverage role, but I think he'd be great starting (and will likely be at the front end of our rotation next year).

Tygart didn't pitch as badly as his line indicated Saturday, and his two previous starts were his best of the year in SEC play.  I didn't understand the move of going back to White catching him after Rowland had caught the two previous times he pitched which were much better.  It would have made sense if we had been trying to get more offense in the lineup, but to turn around and DH Rowland the next day...WTF?

The other problem with moving Tygart to the pen is how he reacted once things went south on him Saturday.  Like I said, he was doing okay...not great, but good enough early on.  Then he grazed a sure DP ball that would have gotten him through the 2nd unscathed.  Then Lovich's derp happened, which put three on the board.  Brady seemed to lose it once he hit a little adversity.  That's not something I want to see in a prospective closer or relief stopper, which is where he would be if he falls out of the rotation.

Gaeckle is our second best pitcher.  Foutch may be third.  I wouldn't be opposed to letting Gabe start in place of Molina, but we need someone available to finish out 2-3 games in a weekend.  Foutch may be that guy, but I'm not sure I trust him enough yet.

That's a great point, I didn't even think about the fact that White caught Tygart (instead of Rowland) this weekend. White hasn't caught Tygart since the Bama series.

If DVH was going to integrate Rowland into the lineup, I'd rather get use out of him defensively than as a DH where he provides zero value and we have better alternatives.

There'd been some rumblings that Tygart felt most comfortable with Rowland, which is why they stopped having Helfrick catch him.

Suck that that means we effectively have an automatic out for one game a weekend, and that's not even counting Wilmsmeyer, Diggs, and Souza.
Title: Re: Hogs vs Kentucky—-Baseball
Post by: Feral on May 06, 2024, 12:41 PM
I went back and looked at some numbers in on Wilmsmeyer, Diggs, and Souza. Suffice it to say they're not pretty at all.

In our last 4 SEC series (UK, Florida, South Carolina, and Bama), they're a combined 11-95 (I lost track of the number of strikeouts), which is a BA of .115.

Wilmsmeyer is the worst at 0-17 in that stretch. He hasn't had a hit in an SEC game since game 3 of the Ole Miss series. That's...really bad.

Diggs is 8-47 in that stretch (.170), and 4 of those hits came this past weekend against UK.

As I've said before, we're not talking enough about how Souza has been quietly slumping badly and looks undisciplined at the plate. He's taking a lot of bad swings and striking out a lot. He's 3-31 in that stretch (.096).

We need to stop trying to use Mac 2x a weekend.  His 2nd outing is always shaky.  I know he wants the ball, but once is enough until we get to the dance.

I feel like Souza can snap out of it with reps.  Lovich should never see the field the rest of the year.  And Diggs?  I don't know what the fuck he is looking at.  Swings at pitches in the dirt and lets belt high fast balls go right by.

I'd move Diggs down to 8th, let Holt lead off, and move Stovall to 2-3-4.  The whole team needs to quit looking for specific pitches and just hit what gets thrown.

Yeah, hot takes...

Agree about Stovall. I get wanting to give him as many AB's as possible, but he's far and away our best hitter and needs to be coming to the plate with runners on base. I like a 1-2-3 of Sandlot, Holt, and Stovall with McLaughlin batting cleanup. That feels like a top of the order that can produce some runs by itself.

I'm not sure about Souza. It's one thing to go O-fer with a couple of hard hit balls right at defenders (what happens with Helfrick), but he's not even making contact now or drawing walks. He seems to have hit a freshman wall. Maybe he'll miraculously find it in the postseason like Stovall did as a freshman, but given the fact they still seem to be searching for a DH tells me they don't have much trust in him.

As someone said earlier in this thread, the book is out on Diggs. If he can gets into advantage counts, anything's possible. However, he too often finds himself down 0-2 and 1-2 and he presses and swings at bad pitches.

Right now our major holes are DH and LF (earmarking Holt for CF). Despite being low average hitters, I'd be good with Helfrick and Jones given that they both have power and have show flashes.

The Wilmsmeyer experiment has to be over. The kid is worse at the plate than Bolton or Rowland ever thought about being last year.

So it must be the coaching?
Also speculating that DVH had Rowland hitting to show his extreme displeasure with the other DH's.
