Well, your Arkansas Razorbacks take on the Miss. Stank Bulldogs for a three game series beginning this Friday at 6:30 on you favorite channel, SECN+. The series resumes Saturday at 6:00, also on SECN+. The final game of the series is Sunday at 2:00 on the SECN. Let's see if we can get our non hitting asses in gear before we drop out of the top 10. Hopefully, we don't see Rowland in the DH spot, or Lovich in the outfield. Pitching is only going to carry us so far. The bats need to wake up. As usual, GO HOGS!
No PBP from me for any of the games as I am in sunny Florida at the beach.
And, your Bob Uecker quote for the game:
I set records that will never be equaled. In fact, I hope 90% of them don't even get printed.

Per DVH, they're sticking with the same rotation. Hagen on Friday (no shit), Tygart on Saturday, Molina on Sunday.

Hagan wins, Tygart beans a couple of hitters and is replaced by three relievers, and Molina will either be good or bad or both. I think we take 2 of 3 but with our bats, who the hell knows.
I might be able to take PBP Sunday. Definitely can't Friday or Saturday.

This game is going to State. I said last weekend we would go 1-5 over the last two series of the season. We may go 0-6.
Pitching has gone to shit. It's one thing to give up hits but this many walks are unacceptable for an elite pitching staff.
White should have gone out and calmed Gaeckle down after the ump fucked him on a couple of strikes called balls.
Does it appear to anyone else that our pitchers are rushing it? Pitching too quickly? I know there is a pitch clock but not that fast

As odd as it is to say, our team will succeed or fail based on Tygart and Molina.
We're going to be in every game Hagen starts, regardless of who we play or even how poorly we hit.
If those two can get going, anything is possible. But if they continue to be inconsistent and inefficient we might not make it out of a regional. The potential outcomes vary wildly.

The most deflating thing about that is that LSU won the CWS 3 times in that stretch ('96, '97, '00).
I'm ready to get that monkey off our back.
We're sitting at 18 conference wins and doing research on how many more wins we need to be safe for a national seed. Why does 18-12 get us #5 national seed in 2018 and nothing in 2022?
2018 - 18-12 and #5 national seed.
2019 - 20-10 and #5 national seed.
2021 - 22-8 and #1 national seed.
2022 - 18-12 No Regional.
Anyway, I think going 2-3 these last 5 games makes us a lock.
We will do better than 2-3. 3-2 is probably realistic. I'm not sure we take 2 of 3 from Aggie AT Aggie.

One of the two of Tygart and Molina has to go to the bullpen.
Nearly 20 pitches and Tygart hasn't recorded an out yet.

Anyone else's picture just go 16 bit?
Wasted 2 on and no outs.
Lead off double. 4 batters later, still on second.
Guess we're not bunting tonight either.
7 walks thus far in just 3 innings.
This pitching staff loves giving free base runners.
7 walks and only in the 3rd with no outs. Challenge the batter until they prove they can hit it.
MSU has now loaded the bases in all 3 innings.

Gonna reiterate this, but I'm not sure this team gets out of a regional with a rotation of Hagen and two question marks given how inept we are at the plate.

We've walked 18 batters so far in 13 innings in this series.
Give MSU props, their approach and plate discipline has been incredible. They know we're inefficient, they're taking a lot, and they're making us put it over the plate.
The book is out on both our pitchers and our hitters. You can find it in the Horror section of your public library.

Yep.
You're not gonna beat Hagen so don't waste your arms.
Tygart and Molina can't find the zone so take everything that isn't right down Broadway and walks will come easy.
Diggs won't swing at the first 2 pitches so grove them right over the plate to get him to 0-2 and then spike it in the dirt and he'll chase.
Souza will swing at anything so pitch it high or low and he'll flail.
Aloy chases low and away constantly.
Wilmsmeyer is the worst hitter in the SEC so just do whatever you want and he'll strike out or hit a dribbler to short.
Sure would feel a lot better about this game if it was 4-2 instead of 8-2.
Too bad DVH got stubborn and left Bybee in way too long.
We need more Stovalls.
I have already seen this story twice this school year

Judas.
MSU's pitching approach was effectively "we're going to shove it because you can't hit and you take too many good pitches," and their plate approach was "your guys can't find the zone so we're taking everything."
I was right as usual. We peaked early.
I am old but I remember when taking a third strike with your bat on your shoulder was shameful and embarrassing

Man you sure got me there.
And I was right.
Today I learned that TulsaPerv is the guy who puts the K stickers up after our pitchers strike someone out.
Not exactly sure how to process that, but I think it was more disturbing to me than the team's performance.
All of a sudden I want to see less  and more pitching to contact.
So I guess Wood didn't take anyone's job?
DVH sounded extremely pissed in postgame, especially at Tygart. Basically hinted (again) at his frustration with both Tygart and Molina's inability to throw strikes.
Honestly, I think this one's on DVH. He should've altered the rotation instead of running it back after a good practice, plus the head-scratching lineup of Diggs (at leadoff!), Lovich, and Souza (another 0-3 with 2 K's), and leaving Bybee in way too long, which was ultimately the difference in the game.
If you're going to tinker with your rotation, do it sooner rather than later to get an adequate sample and size see how the new starters do as well as how your former starters respond coming out of the pen.
DVH also needs to try to settle on some semblance of a lineup, which has been a revolving door all season at DH, LF, and CF and therefore hasn't allowed anyone to get into a rhythm. I like Helfrick, who is coming into his own as a freshman, hits the piss out of the ball, and is way more disciplined at the plate than Souza. I don't know who you put at LF but I'd be okay with giving Jones a shot there due to his power and his defense. We need to stop wasting a Friday night lineup spot on Wilmsmeyer just to watch him go 0-2 with 2 K's and get pinch hit for late in the game.
Back to Souza for a sec.
I think we're overlooking just how bad of a slump he's in, as well as how undisciplined he is at the plate.
Since the Ole Miss series, he's 3-34 (.088) in SEC games. I lost count of the strikeouts in that span, but believe it's 15 or 16.
In SEC games for the season, he's tied for 3rd on the team with 25 strikeouts. Here's the problem - he's doing so with 40 fewer AB's than the other guys.
Here are the top strikeout guys as well as their AB's:
Diggs - 31 strikeouts (101 AB)
Aloy - 26 strikeouts (103 AB)
Stovall - 25 strikeouts (108 AB)
Souza - 25 strikeouts (65 AB)
He also only has 7 walks, whereas Helfrick has 4 in only a third of the AB's. Hell, Lovich has one more walk than Souza in half the AB's.
I don't know what you do. Maybe shut him down like we did Stovall in 2022 and hope he turns it on in the postseason like Peyton did. But he's quietly an automatic out and has become very easy to pitch to because he'll swing at anything.

How long do you have to watch your pitchers throw everything but strikes before you start to think... maybe the players aren't the problem? It's been a problem for us for years now and it always seems worse in the post-season after teams have a full season of game tape on us.

That's eye opening. Didn't realize how bad Souza has been. Seems like we pretty much have to DH Helfrick and let White catch every game, or vice versa.
Jayson Jones being a total bust in LF has been a killer.
Our base running is meh at best, several times guys should have advanced on throws and did not.
Anyone want 2 tix for today?
So to summarize the Woopig group think:
We should fire the hitting coach
We should probably fire the pitching coach or he should thank his lucky stars for Hagen Smith being born.
Souza should sit as he's an automatic out.
Wilmsmeyer should sit as he's an automatic out.
Diggs should sit as he's an automatic out especially with runners on after he watches the first two pitches go right down the middle only to come out of his shoes an a pitch in the dirt/in his eyes/a foot outside.

Dear Woopiggas,
Please accept my humble gratitude for gifting me with this treasure trove of baseball acumen and know that I have set to work immediately implementing these remarkable strategies.
Judging by the wails of his wife and daughters coming from Coach Thompson's office, it appears he has already received his notice of dismissal.
Coach Hobbs is busy assembling a shrine to Hagen Smith whereupon he will burn the uniforms of Souza, Wilmsmeyer and Diggs as a sacrificial offering.
The team is currently running base stealing drills. As an incentive to hustle, any base runner tagged "out" will be required to relinquish one of his gold necklaces.
Gage Wood is in the process of moving all of his equipment into the locker formerly occupied by Brady Tygart. Tygart's new locker is located in the visitors locker room.
Going forward, Will McEntire will receive a sealed envelope on the night prior to each series informing him of which inning and which game he will be allowed access into the ball park. On that particular day, he is to remain in contact by walky-talky and stay "warmed up" at the softball field until summoned.
Any batter not swinging on a strike (regardless of call sign) or striking out before seeing a minimum of 5 pitches will be fined one gold necklace.
Again, many thanks for this wisdom and guidance. As a symbol of gratitude and at my request, the U of A Board of Trustees have agreed to rename the baseball facilities to Woopig Stadium at Rick B. Field.
Warmest Regards,
Dave

Field.
Warmest Regards,
Dave
Worth the dues 👍🏻
Diggs goes from leadoff to 8th in batting order.
Florida LF just earned himself a blanket party. Ouch.
Molina sucks.
Second day in a row our starter won't make it to the 3rd inning.
Edit - and there's the hook from DVH. 1.0 IP, didn't even get an out in the 2nd.
Well, that should just about do it.
DVH better shake up the rotation for A&M.
Tygart and Molina need their asses sent to the pen. I don't care who we start, but I'm tired of those two putting us behind the 8 ball in games 2 and 3.
We're toast
This team isn't making it out of a regional.
Still can't hit. Pitching has regressed. Defense has even taken a step back.
Better start stringing together some hits or this one is gonna be over quick.

Cue our offense pressing bigtime at the plate.
Stovall was swinging at bad pitches in the 1st, and McLaughlin was flailing at balls in the dirt in his 2nd inning AB.
This MSU pitcher wearing 1910 style knickerbockers.
Back to swinging for the fences every AB. Get a lead on us and we start pressing big time.
There's the classic Diggs strikeout with RISP we've become accustomed to.
Takes the first pitch right down the chute.
Fouls off 2 straight.
Chases low and away for strike 3.

This is some hard truth. I'd be shocked if we're in a super.
Lord this is painful. They have shat the bed and continue to shat.
Looks like the crowd has realized this team is going nowhere.
Oh well. Should be used to it by now.
Running outs of fucks today..
I trust PorkRyan's opinion on Arkansas baseball more than anyone here. He didn't think Molina was the goods and that this team has big holes. Velo is not what it was last year for Molina.
I was told this team hadn't peaked.
I hate it but DVH is Mike Martin.
We may not win another game this year.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on May 12, 2024, 03:56 AMToday I learned that TulsaPerv is the guy who puts the K stickers up after our pitchers strike someone out.
Not exactly sure how to process that, but I think it was more disturbing to me than the team's performance.
All of a sudden I want to see less  and more pitching to contact.
Not surprising the hex on the program then. I wonder how DVH reacts at a swatters club meeting when that freak asks a question.
Our discipline at the plate is a little below par.
Quote from: hit_that_line on May 12, 2024, 03:00 PMI hate it but DVH is Mike Martin.
Starting to look like it.
Not sure how this team can get out of a regional without Smith going Kopps
I miss dvh's style when he got here of being aggressive with steals, hit and runs, moving runners. Can players today not do that? It is obvious they can't bunt.
Ironic that is the style that wins in the big park in Omaha.
Also, McLaughlin pulls his foot off first a little too quick sometimes and someone is gonna call him on it.
Think about this; Kentucky, Tennessee or A&M will win it all this year. Arkansas will still be chasing their first.

That won't buff out.
Is there any chicken money left for Tony V?
This first base ump has had no idea where he is supposed to be the last 2 games, how does that happen at this point of the season in the SEC?
McEntire won't give it all back.... 😀
Missed opportunity to take second on the wild throw. Of course...
McLaughlin doesn't take 2nd on an easy dirt ball read.
He's been one of our derpiest players this year.
Watch us GIDP now to end the inning.

I'm tired of hearing about Diggs injury. He has been bad at the plate for almost all of SEC play. If he is still hurt then he doesn't need to be playing until fully healthy.

Problem us. who do you replace him with that is any better? With him there is hope he turns it around. I don't even have hope for Wilmsmeyer, Jones, or Lovich (defensively).

I think you tell Diggs next game that he's to swing at the first pitch regardless of what or where it is. Hope he can run into a fastball and get his confidence back.
Need to let Jones play LF the rest of the way. The upside is worth putting up with a few strikeouts.

Not sure what's been going on with Stovall but he's been off defensively the last two series and making uncharacteristic mistakes.

I don't quite understand DVH's thinking with playing Diggs this weekend after he went on in his press conference this week about how he was hurt and they were going to give him some rest.
Then they PH'd him in game 1 and he was back in the lineup in games 2 and 3. What was most curious was his decision to bat Diggs leadoff yesterday. I get that's probably a thing to build his confidence, but it's been tried as nauseum this year and nothing has worked.
Diggs doesn't need to bat above the 8 hole until he proves he's turned a corner.
Didn't get to watch any of the game. However, it sounds like we played like we always do. Shitty pitching, get behind, then come back for the win. This is the weirdest team I can remember. It is nice to have a decent catcher that can also hit. Hopefully we get our pitching rotation worked out. Other than Smith, we suck.

If we could get someone in the #2 starter role, we could do the whole "opener, middle dudes, closer" thing for game 3.
Tyrant needs to accept he's not a starter right now. Maybe next year.

You pegged it.
- Molina got rocked and didn't record a single out in the 2nd.
- Wood gave up a homer to his first batter and settled in okay. He ultimately pitched 3 innings and gave up 2 earned.
- we got down 6-0 and then they didn't score again after the 3rd.
- Foutch (1.0), Mac (2.0), and Gaeckle (2.0) all pitched brilliantly the last 5 innings and and only gave up a combined 5 hits, 4 walks, and zero runs.
- we scored 7 runs combined in the 5th and 6th with 2 run homers from Jones, White, and Holt to make it 8-6
- Sandlot hit a lead off double in the 8th (could've been stretched to a triple since the RF misplayed off the wall and dropped the transfer) and then got brought in by SF from McLaughlin.
Woopig group think remains undefeated!

I'd say piggyback Tygart and Molina on Saturday. Dave isn't going to use Gaeckle on back to back days. Keep the best relievers ready to close for Smith and hopefully win on Sunday. I'd either start Wood or McEntire on Sunday with the other being one of the Friday/Sunday high leverage pen arms.
Best case: Tygart and/or Molina return to previous form and we go into Saturday up 2-0. Worst case we lose and still have our valuable pen arms ready for Sunday like we did today.
Whether starting or relieving, Tygart will be somewhere in the minor leagues next year. He's still reasonably high on draft boards due the crazy spin rates on his breaking balls.
To All Woopiggers,
On second thought, cram it.
Dave
Someone that has twitter should post DVH postgame...apparently the MSU dugout was talking a lot of trash.
He reiterated the chirping in his post game presser as well.

Yes he was definitely more diplomatic in the postgame press conference.
One brief mention around 0:30 then he answered Dolt's question about it around 6:00.
I saw after one of the HR's yesterday, maybe Holt's, that our fans were booing something. Anyone know what that was about?
I don't remember any booing after Holt's dinger. It was pretty damn rowdy where we were.
It may have been the angle, but I don't remember a visiting dugout being that loud. And we weren't that close. Could've had something to do with how quiet our crowd was until the middle of the game. But they were talking a lot of shit around the time Wood came in. The folks in my section were screaming "that'll shut em' up" and similar. But I didn't hear shit after we got rolling.

I'll see if I can go back and find it. It may not have been Holt, but after one of our HR's, our dugout was looking out on the field as if words were being exchanged. Then the fans (at least behind home plate) were booing for another couple of pitches.

I'm not liking the realization that the final is going to be Tennessee vs Aggie/Florida/Kentucky. Three of those don't have their first Championship yet.
I'm cheering for Tennessee to win it all. ( I actually think they are the best team)
Tony V gets a title before DVH. Ugh.
UT has to pay him big money for eternity or it breaks their collective hearts when he leaves them to take the Arkansas job when DVH hangs it up.

Missouri fans should be livid over not hiring Vitello. He played there and interviewed for the head coaching job in 2017. They thought he was too young and not ready, so they went with someone else and a year later Vitello was the head coach of the Vols. It proves that Ark is a little bit lower than at least one other team on on Karma's shit list.

Yeah, they picked the SEMO head coach over Vitello. In hindsight, I'm glad they did. We don't need them kicking our asses in more than one sport.
