The lack of a double base may have cost us a chance to go to Omaha in 2021. Slavens fucked up his ankle on a play that the double bag would have prevented. He was on a roll going into Hoover, and was pretty much an automatic out in regionals and supers that year.

Seems like an easy change to make for player safety to me. It doesn't change fair/foul decisions...if a ball hits the
colored bag bag of color, it's foul. If it hits the normal base, it's fair, same as before.
I just can't see any negative to it.

There will come a time when the runner will step directly where the two bags meet going to first and no one will know what to do. LOL.
Looks like we will be getting South Carolina. 10-5, 1 out, bottom of the ninth.

Youth softball is the only place I see it, NFHS doesn't require it nationally but some states do. The NCAA is looking at it for softball but....
I see the safety side and have often wondered why it isn't adopted and was told studies show it would minimal impact at best.
When you think about, collisions at first are rare and when it does happen it is because of a bad throw to first.
The fact that on this day of all about player safety and it has yet to be adopted or mandated does speak volumes.
As noted, the tournament format is beyond stupid forcing teams to burn pitchers for a meaningless tournament the week before the real tournament.

So when do they put another base at second, where it seems more collisions occur, or home for that matter? (Don't mind me, I am just stirring the pot).

You aren't wrong. 2nd base has far more collisions than any base but I would say steals are first by a 3 or 4 to 1 margin vs. force outs

Is there anything riding on us winning any games in this deal or are we better off saving the good arms and using this stuff as batting practice?
Quote from: Cerdo on May 21, 2024, 08:15 PMsaving the good arms and using this stuff as batting practice?
this part.
We have a few pitchers that need some reps heading into the postseason. Tygart, McEntire, Flaherty, Coil, even Molina needs to get a little sharper.
Outside of that, I wouldn't throw anyone more than a bullpen.

Far more rolled ankles (see Slavens reference above) and stepped on feet.
I think it's a good move.
DVH praised the change.
I don't have a problem with it. It doesn't change the game.
I would treat this tourney start as a mid week game (as it is) and throw some guys that need the practice. This tourney doesn't make or break us.
We have the #4 or #5 seed locked up no matter what happens this week. IMO, McEntire needs some rest, a couple of hitters need to heat up, and everyone else needs to stay healthy. Then next week, LFG.

Kentucky with 1 hit.
Watching the SEC Now lead in to our game. Jared Mitchell's hair line is quite distracting. Guy should probably give it up and go bald. Though looking at his remarkable ability to stick like a tic with "professional" baseball despite lackluster stats, he clearly isn't one to give up on things quickly.
Top of the first. Bybee on the mound.
Brinling leads off. Grounds out to short. 1 away.
Petry goes down swinging on three pitches. 2 away.
Jackson takes 2 strikes called balls. Fuck this ump. Walks.
Funky Cole Messina takes ball three. Ump squeezing Bybee badly. Walks. Runners at first and second. This ump sucks.

Seems like someone should tell him to swing at every first pitch that's not obviously right at his head or toward the dugout for a while just to see if he accidentally makes contact.

Top of the third.
Brinling walks on 4 pitches. Why can't our pitchers just throw strikes and let the defense do their thing? 1 on.
Petry singles to left. Runners at first and second, no outs.
Jackson pops up a bunt the falls in front of Stovall. He picked it up and throws to second d for the force. Runners at the corners, 1 out.
Messina with a seeing eye single to center. Run scores. Runners at the corners, 1 out. 2-1 Cocks.
Pitching change....Foutch in.

The live broadcast didn't show it...all they showed was a throw coming into second with White standing there.
A later replay from above 3rd base showed it pretty clearly. Both runners paused for a second to let the ball get through (as they should have), Stovall found Nate and kept running. White's eyes were on the ball with the play in front of him. He stopped at second, even though the throw came back to that base. Unless he fell down halfway between the bases he could have made it to third easily.
Not getting too worked up about it though. I'd just as soon drop one tomorrow and get back to Fayetteville healthy and well rested. This tournament is useless for teams in our position. The only real concern is that Kentucky is probably looking at it the same way. Someone has to win.

Quote from: Thin Red Swine on May 22, 2024, 03:59 PMThe announcer gave us a lot of credit for finding ways to win. Lately, we've been finding ways to lose.
We're now 10-10 in road and neutral games. That won't cut it if we get past next weekend.
For a little perspective, of those 10 road loses, 9 were against teams in the top 25. 4 of those 9 losses were against teams in the top 10 with another 4 losses against teams in the 15-25 range. The one other loss was against James Madison.
I'm not sure what exactly that means other than we have played some really tough teams on the road and I can't imagine we will see that level of competition prior to Omaha. Once there I like our chances.

Help me understand why I should like Arkansas' chances in Omaha when they can't hit. Is it the spacious outfield that will make the other teams' homeruns stay in the park?

Diggs at leadoff...again.
Unless he somehow finds it the next day or two, DVH better cut this shit out in the postseason with Diggs at the top of the order.
We look sharp so far.
:sarcasm:
Man, we need some Benny Hill music. This is comical.
What does defense have so far: a walk, a hit, 2 errors, 2 runs and it's just in bottom of first
Defense looks like warm dogshit.
Leadoff walk takes second on an errant pickoff throw.
Stovall fucks up a routine lineout.
White throws a pickoff throw into left field.
Spectacular start. This is natty quality baseball.
So I don't need to turn this on?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I just have to circle back to DVH continuing to bat Diggs leadoff.
He's forgotten more baseball than I'll ever know, but you have a batter who's been struggling badly all season with no turnaround in sight who might be our worst hitter, and you're maximizing his AB's?
I just don't understand it.
This just might not be our day.
...and McLaughlin just got robbed of a homer.
Let's pack it in, go home, and get ready for the regional.

We have good pitching and we hit well enough to score runs. We are 43 and 13. We don't suck.
If you have a 2-0 count, you can just about bet the next pitch is going to be down the middle. And yet, Diggs will watch two of them with his bat on his shoulder.
Smith's velocity down. Hobbs may have ruined another one.

on the ESPN site, go to the search feature and look. Just type in Arkansas baseball and it will show "live" there.
I was watching the MissStake game last night and noticed that whenever they showed Lemonis, he was twitching a lot. There were several quick head twitches and shoulder shrugs, like he has a mild case of Tourettes. Even during the post game interview, he had a few and looked like he was working hard to control it. Anybody notice that or if he's done that in the past. Google motherfucker doesn't know anything.

Diggs can stay in the lineup because he's better in the field than Edmunson and Lovich, and Wilmsmeyer might be the only player on our roster who's worse offensively.
My issue isn't necessary that Diggs is in the lineup in the first place, but that DVH has him batting leadoff. He's done absolutely nothing to earn that.

So every pitcher that has gotten hurt is a result of the pitching coach? What a dumbass comment.
Dietz is a freshman who was nursing an injury when he got to campus. Before working with Hobbs.
These guys need the Lou Brown push-up treatment every time they pop up.
And of course McLaughlin blisters one right at somebody.
Can't pitch, can't field, can't hit, can't catch a break.
I think it's safe to say that Tygart may be washed.
As of this post he's faced 4 batters.
E-1
Homer
Walk (advanced to 2nd on wild pitch)
HBP
This is 2022 all over again where we can't trust him at all headed into the postseason.
Meaningless game, but I just hate that this will give HS his first loss of the season. And against a team he owned just 3 weeks ago.
Do our pitchers know to check runners at 2nd?
Maybe the selection committee is sleeping in today? Are we jeopardizing the Top 8 spot?
With this effort it doesn't much matter our seed, I guess.
Another 0-4 day for Diggs. He's been the last out of 2 different innings.
Meanwhile our 2-3-4 hitters are 4-10 with 2 walks. But they keep coming up with at least 1 out due to Diggs.
So glad we're giving him the extra AB's that come with that leadoff spot, as opposed to someone like Holt.

I missed this so I went back to watch.
A homer on an 0-2 juicy hanging curve.
A wild pitch after getting ahead 0-1 on a well-placed fastball, still getting the guy to 1-2 and barely staying alive with a foul before hitting him with the next pitch.
DVH didn't even say anything to him when he brought the hook.

I will be surprised if we make it out of our regional. Lackluster play down the stretch and a pervasive aura of "these games are meaningless" as an excuse for why we are losing. Doesn't feel good. I know the past few weeks have been against the best possible opponents, but still. This team is moving in the wrong direction at the wrong time. I fear a repeat of last year where we draw a very hot #2 seed in the regional and pay for it. I hope I'm wrong.

Texas is projected be to our #2.
Don't look now but they finished the season with 6 straight series wins. Not exactly what I want to see out of a #2 in our regional.
I think we make it out of the regional IF we can win game 1 without Hagan. If we do, and Hagan can win game 2, then surely we take 1 out of 3 games against a team with little pitching left.
Supers are a different story. I don't see us doing well there without some luck.

This. We've got to pitch Wood or Molina in game 1, put up some runs and go easy on our pen, and then get a typical Hagen game in game 2.
The problem with this team is that they tend to play up or down offensively to the level of pitching we face.
I lost count of the number of times this season an opponent trotted out an underclassman pitcher with a 4.0+ ERA, and our lineup would promptly make them look like Greg Maddux.
4-7 in our last 11 games (albeit against UK, Miss St, aTm, and SC). It's frustrating to be limping into post-season, but hopefully DVH can flip the switch for these guys next weekend.
Quote from: hit_that_line on May 23, 2024, 12:22 PMTygart is hurt.
As I told RickB 5 weeks ago; if he is hurt then DVH needs to stop pitching him. Makes no fucking sense to keep putting a guy into situations he physically can't win.
We will make it to Omaha.
A&M, Kentucky or Tennessee will win it all.
It's so frustrating because we looked like we were coming together early in the season...but hitting has been shit, and pitching is starting to falter and we are making more errors. It's like DVH can never solve the puzzle in getting solid pitching, hitting and defense.

Would it surprise anyone to find out that over the last 20 or so games we have out hit our opponents? The issue is we are not getting timely hits and guys like Diggs always seem to kill what momentum we have.

They could put in a pitcher that barely made the roster and we still couldn't hit him. Tygart ALWAYS plunks at least one hitter. And Diggs...what more needs to be said.
I wonder if our guys over pitch during the season and they just get fatigued and never take enough time off to recover.
For example, running cross country and track in high school, we ran 5-6 days per week alternating speed work and 4-5 mile runs.
When spring break came around we were supposed to keep running, I took the whole week off and would always run my best times of the season the first meet after spring break.
We were just running too damn much without enough of time to rest.

That is very surprising, but I wonder if that isn't more of a compliment to our pitching staff than our hitters.
Looking at our offensive numbers at the national level is even more depressing.
82nd in HR's, 200th in batting avg, 215th in extra base hits and 161st in on base %.
Hagan will go down as one of the greatest Razorbacks in any sport for carrying this team to a respectable record.
I'd like us to play with a lead, that would be nice. This falling behind by 4, 5 or 6 runs before we score is getting very old.
Since I had some time, I dug into the Diggs numbers more. There was nothing that Earth-shattering I learned, and only confirms that he tailed off at the end of the season no matter DVH shuffling him up and down.
My main takeaway is that he performs better in the lineup spots that many people think are the most important and maybe that is in his head as well. His best production has been while batting second or fifth, decidedly not at leadoff, so that remains a head-scratcher. The spots below 5th are virtually irrelevant due to small sample size but included anyway.
Other raw data that is almost incomprehensible:
- Last HR was March 28, which is also the last date his OPS was above 1.000
- One extra-base hit in May
- Three extra-base hits since April 1
- 34 LOB with only 12 RBI since April 1
