Title: Soccer
Post by: Hogfan58 on May 25, 2024, 06:49 PM
Man Utd defeated EPL Champions Man City 2-1 in the FA Cup Final today in a huge upset.

Glory Glory Man Utd!

Utd reportedly are going to fire their manager in the couple of days.

Tonight's loss was bad. Not because it was a bad opponent, but it was a must win game with our best available players, and we couldn't win. And we don't advance out of a joke of a group on our home soil.

I don't know what else needs to be said. Berhalter needs to be out tomorrow.

Honestly they fire the coach for this type performance but then rehire him and expect something different, that is stupid.

Anything could happen, but when Klopp retired from Liverpool, he pretty clearly indicated it was for a break from football, for an unspecified amount of time.  I cannot imagine he would ever take the US job, much less a couple months after that.
Title: Re: Soccer
Post by: Cornhogio on Jul 11, 2024, 12:50 PM
The guy in charge of USA Soccer said it would be a world wide search, for a habitual winner, and that money would not be an object.  I'd make him say no.  At least that lets everyone know we're not messing around.

Another thing I wondered about was the difference between club management and national team management.  Granted I don't have a full understanding, but club management seems like a lot more of a grind.  National team is tough in spurts, but it's not the week in, week out matches, Europe, FA Cup, League Cup, loan management, etc.
Title: Re: Soccer
Post by: One Quarter on Jul 11, 2024, 01:40 PM
No question, managing a national team is far less demanding.  I'm just relaying that Klopp said he wanted to take time off to, among other things, travel with his family.  I take that to mean a complete hiatus of at least a year rather than a couple months.

The media also named him a potential successor for both the England and Germany positions, both of which seem likelier to me than the US.  But for sure, I could be wrong.

He's a world-class manager and would be a statement hire for the US, but I also think our problem can't be fixed by a manager alone.
Title: Re: Soccer

I agree that it's more than just the manager.  I don't know what exactly it is, but I think we need an entire new leadership structure.  Anyone involved in hiring Berhalter back after the first stint should not be involved in the new hire.

I get the sense that the players think they should have a role beyond just playing, and doing what they're told.  We need to figure out what our style of play is going to be, and bring in players that play to that style, and hire coaches that coach to it.  Our style of play right now seems to be an amalgam of the different European leagues.

We also simply don't have the talent.  We have exactly one player who has made a top-league roster.  The talent and development have supposedly been "coming" for the past 30 years.

Not to be that guy, but technically, Berhalter wasn't fired and re-hired. His contract expired following the last World Cup and after a "search" they decided to sign him to another contract. I think they intended to re-sign him all along, they were just letting the spousal abuse/Reyna drama situation blow over first.

But your point still stands. It was a bad decision to sign him again, and it's basically the same group making this decision.

Not getting out of the group at the next World Cup would be a disaster on par with not qualifying for 2018.

Reasonable expectation is to win the first round of knockouts. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

Pochettino is a flashy hire, and would be known to anyone in South America or Europe who follows top-level soccer.  He's managed world-class clubs Chelsea and PSG and 2nd-tier clubs Southampton and Tottenham (the latter for a 5-year span, which is long for the Premier League).  He reportedly values vertical integration "from the academy to the first team", which the US is very bad at.  It's among the best hires we could realistically hope for given the unmanageable and mishandled blob he'll need to deal with.  Plus, at 52 he's young enough to have the energy to at least take it on.

Even though I enjoy watching soccer, I still don't know much about the tactics. When I hear vertical integration, I picture speed up the field rather than Berhalters maintain possession and pass around pressure. Am I close?

Ha!  That may be close, if anyone's ever used it to describe tactics.  What I meant was vertical integration as it's used in business -- managing and streamlining the organization from the lowest level (such as youth development) to the end product (the national team).  Pochettino is known to have valued this at his clubs, and more of it would be great for the US if it is even possible.  Like with most sports, tactics are less important than player quality, which is our main problem.

Brilliant insight by the color commentator.

As good as their goalie is, we really don't need this to go to PKs.

As good as our team is, they would be so much better if they would learn to kick/pass the ball to the girls in the same colored jersey.

Of course. Further proof God hates us. Texas wins this in their first try, after our years and years of coming up short.

1-0 over South Carolina.

Btw, this is the Sweet 16 so we're playing to get back to the Elite Eight like last year.  The winner of our game will face the winner of Notre Dame and Mississippi State.

In other SEC related results...

Vanderbilt shocked Florida State (8 seed beating the 1) in the second round and is going toe to toe with Penn State this afternoon/evening, tied 1-1 in the second half.

Notre Dame took out Kentucky in the second round and is looking like it may also bump off Mississippi State, leading 2-0 in the first half.

Texas was knocked out by Michigan State, Auburn by Ohio State, and South Carolina by Minnesota in the second round.

LSU, Tennessee and Georgia lost in the first round.

Pittman coached the last 22 seconds.

Vandy and MisStake both knocked out so we're left to carry the banner.

Good response the last few minutes.

We may not pull this out but we are hanging in tough against the bluest of blue blood programs.

Quirky ending incoming, whoever wins.

I will never support PK finishes.

Post by: no clever name on Nov 25, 2024, 07:47 AM
We try to win by having better athletes.  Nothing wrong with that, but you ultimately, at the higher levels of the game, find teams with both athleticism and technical skill.  When that happens, you are losing.  Now, Stanford was close to that mix but we could have gotten them last night.  I'd be shocked if they win it all.

Actually, our best player, especially when she isn't too dinged up, plays defender and is from Jacksonville.  Kiley Dulaney is an absolute freak.  She is track fast and good on the ball.  She will make some pro team an amazing outside back or wing back.

Penalty kicks are flukey and all but last night we were not good at all at them offensively.

Yes, definitely not a fluke last night.

We had two of the worst you will see and all four of theirs were high quality.

Your #6 Ladybacks are back on the pitch tonight against #2 Notre Dame in the most highly anticipated match of the early season.

Our side is coming off a tough opening loss against #13 Iowa.

It's tied 1-1 at the midway point of the first half and is live on SEC Network.

They've actually done much better possessing it in the second half.

Kennedy Ball just took OVER the last several minutes.

Great play to get that hand ball.

They are having a snow removal stoppage right now, another at 85

3 inches of snow, they will plow the field for extra time, tied 1-1

Wow - they somehow kept it tied.
