I'd be happy with this draw. No SEC opponents until Omaha and no TX or DBU as our 2 seed. UVA could give us trouble but no worse than the other potential Super opponents.
That Stillwater regional is filthy. I hope they're right about Wake going to UGA. That would be good TV.

I like that plan. If anyone catches DVH at Catfish Hole, please pass this along to him, as well as my endorsement.
Having Gaeckle available out of the pen really helps for situations like this. If it's a close game 1, bring him in and keep the rest of the bullpen in tact.
Ideally, we can get out to a big lead (I know, I know), and let Tygart get some innings in.

DVH did this last year in the regional. He started Hunter Hollan in game 1 and saved Hagen for game 2.
It didn't work out in either game, because Hollan was only able to go 2 innings and gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning against Santa Clara (McEntire came in in the 3rd and had to pitch 5 innings). Then Hagen got absolutely shithammered in game 2 against TCU, giving up 8 earned in just 1.0 IP.

How do we get to 27 quality innings?
DVH managed Hagan's pitch count pretty closely throughout the season. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes a little deeper in the postseason depending on the situation.
Ideally, we could go into game 2 of Regionals and Supers with the nearly all of our bullpen in tact. It would especially help if we have a big enough lead in our Game 1's to save Gaeckle for Game 2 or 3.
We also had a lot of guys who DVH used for matchups, that could pitch longer if needed. Hewlett, Coil, Foutch and several others.
Quote from: hit_that_line on May 30, 2024, 02:35 PMHow do we get to 27 quality innings?
When's the last time Tygart has given us quality innings?
I posted this on another board, but If we're being honest with ourselves, Tygart hasn't been someone we can reliably count on much at all this season, and his command issues have gotten worse the last few months.
For Tygart, the delta between his season ERA (3.94) and his SEC-only ERA (5.40) is pretty significant, whereas Molina's is pretty consistent (4.04 // 4.50).
Here's some other Tygart stats:
- He hit 15 batters, which is 28% of team total (nobody else has more than 7)
- He issued the most walks (36)
- He had the most wild pitches (7 — more than double anyone else on staff)
- He had the fewest strikeouts of the rotation (69)
- He had the highest opposing BA (.220)
- He also gave up the most hits, most doubles, most runs, and most earned runs of our rotation
People seem to forget that when we made Omaha in 2022, Tygart was basically unusable by the end of the regular season and didn't see much meaningful action in the postseason. He got absolutely shelled in his limited appearances in Stillwater, and was hot trash in Omaha (faced only 2 batters in the 9th against Ole Miss and plunked both of them).
I'm not talking goddamned Tygart, Biggus. We don't have enough pitching.

Watched DVH's press conference yesterday, and he was asked specifically about Diggs batting leadoff.
He basically said what we've all been saying all year, that Diggs takes too many pitches (especially early in counts) and finds himself in disadvantage counts too often. He even said pointedly that he wanted Diggs to swing the bat earlier in ABs because that's when they're pitching him right down the chute.
He confirmed he had been batting him leadoff down the stretch to get him more AB's in an effort to get him going. He said something to the effect of "I was playing for the future, which is now" — judging by that comment, I highly doubt Diggs bats higher than 6th or 7th today (otherwise DVH is truly insanely stubborn).
I didn't watch the full press conference, but I'd also be curious what his plans for the OF are and whether we see Wilmsmeyer in CF or if he rolls with some combo of Jones/Lovich/Edmunson in LF (and thus Holt in CF). Jones has power but he was exceptionally bad in SEC play (.095 on the season), strikes out way too much, and rarely ever walks.

Tits out for the Hogs. It's a terrible day to be a cold beer. Lake time til game time.
Looks like our game will be at 8:00 PM and be shown on ESPNU.
DVH said in his presser that they took Gaeckle out after the 8th in order to potentially use him later in the regional if needed. He also hinted that Gaeckle might start down the road in this postseason if we keep playing, which goes to what several of were talking about yesterday re: Gaeckle being a potential starter in the supers if we get there.
He also said McEntire can still pitch if needed on Sunday, though I'm not sure they trust him at all. DVH seemed pretty pissed about the home run ball he threw because it was a 1-2 pitch that was supposed to be in the dirt and McEntire left it up (which he's started doing more and more with his cutter).
Basically everyone who pitched yesterday can be called upon later this weekend if needed, with Gaeckle being the question mark. Outside of him, nobody threw an overly high number of pitches between Molina (60), McEntire (30), Foutch (21), and Faherty (17).

Phil had some interesting record stats on his podcast earlier this week.
- The Hogs have played 57 games on the season.
- More than half of those games (30) have been against teams that made the tournament.
- For those 30 games, Arkansas is 17-13.
- However, we're 10-3 at home.

Stovall leads off. Grounds out to deep second. 1 away.
White walks. 1 on.
J SLott goes down looking. Bad looking AB. 2 away.
McLaughlin flies out to the wall in dead center.
0-0 with KState coming to bat.

Surprised to see a shift against Stovall. He's not a dead pull hitter.
Bottom of the first. Smith on the mound.

Making things slightly less painful, if White's double HAD been a home run, it would've been more of a gut punch to see that one beat us by 1.
At least that's what I'm gonna tell myself.
Another purple team kicking our ass on our field.
Top of the ninth. Mary Jane's Last Chance.
Aloy leads off. Runs the count full. Singles to left. 1 on.
Diggs goes down swinging, 1 away.
Holt HOMERS to left! 7-6.
Wagner goes down swinging UGLY at one in the dirt after watching 2 down the middle.
Wilmsmeyer walks.
Stovall takes a ball, Wilmsmeyer steals second. Ump fucks us and calls Wilmsmeyer back to first saying Stovall was in the way of the throw. The. Stovall goes down swinging.
We suck: 6 We don't : 7

Holt with a 2 run shot to make it a 7-6 game. Man leaving those two runners on last inning hurts.
Quote from: Thin Red Swine on Jun 01, 2024, 10:36 PMThe irony is their fifth inning was vintage DVH small ball.
If ever we had a team built for small ball, this is it. But we don't play it.
Yep.
This year was just a head scratching year for DVH.
Had holes all over the lineup, including two in the OF and revolving door of futility at DH, which is insane because those are the positions where you just want bats. It's not like last year where we had 2 automatic outs in Bolton and Rowland but had to eat it because of the defensive importance of their positions.
Yet we never seemed to steal, sac, hit and run, or anything. I was legit jealous when we played Kentucky because their style of ball masks hitting deficiencies and travels.
Swing the damn bat!
ETA: well not at that pitch!
Damn!
Good and bad thing that just happened. Now we have to start up again.
Wagner following up Holt's good thing with his own terribly awful thing.
Tying run on first. Can't believe KSU is leaving that pitcher out there, even with the outing he's had so far.
Thats bullshit
Lol what? Taking our steal away.
Jesus Stovall has had some incredibly terrible AB's in this postseason.
I will never, ever get my hopes up again for any Arkansas sport so these types of things don't hurt so bad. Chaggy/Bert did that and while painful, it sure makes losses easier.
And Stovall goes down chasing a high fast.
Fun game to watch, just the wrong team won.
We will either lose to SEMO or win the regional.
Typical.

Our best players not pissing a drop during postseason feels like tradition.
13 hits, 13 LOB, 6 runs vs 5 hits, 2 LOB, and 7 runs.
Sometimes home runs are a funny thing and kill momentum. You'd never say you wouldn't take one, but if Holt had hit a double into the gap we might've scored 4 or 5 runs.
And I say that after watching what happened when White did that very thing.
Y'all realize it's not over yet right?
I was pretty sure Stovall would strike out after they called interference on him. Someone should have come in and talked to him for a second to let him get his composure.

You might want to review some numbers on him.
Going back to the Kentucky series, he's 19-59 with a few 2 or 3 hit games. I went through it quickly without counting XBH or other things but that's just below his season average.
Yes he was swinging for the fence on the last two at bats but canine feces doesn't really come to mind.

Great point I had missed, and it's part and parcel of my complaints about DVH..and other old ball coaches I've been around in this game.
At some point they stop "coaching" and become administrators of sorts. That works in the show, but at other levels, even college ball, kids need to be coached up.
I saw the same thing with Billy Peele. Yes, guys like him and DVH have "forgotten more baseball than I know," but thats the problem. They've forgotten.
Teach kids to get Charlie Hustle with 2 strikes and choke up and crowd the plate. If a pitcher is throwing first pitch strikes, I better not see a motherfucker one take a first strike. DVH seems to passively coach, and that's great in a 30 game regular season, but come tournament time it's time to tighten up and coach up every opportunity.
That's exactly what Hughes did tonight in their 6 run inning and it made DVH look silly.
Our plate approach and more importantly, situational awareness are dogshit. A lot of that has to go on the coaching.

At least we have track?
So now we have to win three games over the next two days. Seems very likely.
Our bats are gonna have to get out to early leads to take some pressure off the bullpen. Which is about as likely as Thompson getting fired.

SEMO's coach (who played for DVH at Nebraska) made a comment that made me raise an eyebrow.
Said he played on DVH's first Nebraska team, and DVH rode his ass like a rented mule. He said "back then he was a much more demonstrative coach."
I was at UA in the mid 2000s and had a fraternity brother who walked on to the baseball team and talked at length about how much of a hardass DVH was.
Andrew Benintendi told a story in an interview one time about how he hit a 9th inning solo homer against LSU when we were getting blown out and he admired it before a slow trot. In the postgame huddle DVH called him out and basically said "you're gonna hit a homer in a blowout and look at it? Why don't you hit one when it actually matters in a game for once?" Benny said that changed his approach as a player and we ultimately made Omaha that year.
Granted, that type of coaching is harder to do in the portal era, but he definitely doesn't seem to light a fire in asses like he used to.
Quote from: Feral on Jun 01, 2024, 11:22 PMJust let me melt, man ;D
Granted.
I'm melting but for other reasons. I said something different before, but if White's ball had gone just a few more feet, we likely would've gone to Gaeckle and their last home run never happens. We would've have been able to ride that momentum to scratch out one more.

I've coached my kids little league team, and currently the All-Star team, so I feel like I can speak on this as an almost expert.... O0
When you as a coach go back and look at a stat line like 13 hits, 13 LOB, and 6 runs..if you dont question every time you didnt call for a steal, bunt, or threatening lives for not swinging at first pitch strikes, then somethings wrong.
A stat line like that and losing by 1, as a coach I'm falling on my sword before the entire team. It's inexcusable.
Another good season without a title. This team doesn't have the arms or bats left to make it out of the regional. Losing the game that Smith started was the one thing that could not happen.
The 23-24 school year will go down as one of the most disappointing from an athletic standpoint . Neither football, basketball, nor baseball lived up to the hype. Hopefully, next year is different.
Not to amplify the melt, but it's exceptionally depressing that one of the three of A&M, Kentucky, and Tennessee will likely win the CWS this year.

Quote from: Hizog on Jun 02, 2024, 12:18 AMWood getting the start vs Semo tomorrow.
And that's at least a little concerning. Here are some thoughts from a long-time high school baseball coach...
"I hope I'm wrong but I think SEMO is a bad matchup for Wood. They swing it well. Maybe they'll have a day of swinging at pitches out of the zone. If they're patient and make him get fastballs over, I feel like they'll feast on his 90-92 fastball...I don't like it."
One thing on hitting that bothers me in general is hitters not even trying to hit to open spaces when teams play these asinine shifts. Hardly any of our hitters last night put one through a shift created gap. That's part of the difference between playing at baseball, and being a baseball player.
I didn't agree with MLB putting rules in place to "outlaw" the shift. If a defense puts all five outfielders on the left or right side of the field. It's incumbent on a baseball player to hit the ball where the defense is not.
Our plate approach was terrible last night.
We had a penchant for not doing jack shit until we had 2 outs, then we suddenly seemed to get traffic on the basepaths only to strand them.
Top 3rd - 2 quick outs, single, ground out.
Top 4th - 2 quick outs, single, single, foul out.
Top 6th - 1 quick out, single, out, walk, ground out.
Our leadoff hitter didn't reach base until the 8th inning. That's a lot of innings with wasted first outs.
We have some hitters who press and lose all discipline at the plate, hence the number of bad strikeouts and pop ups we had.

Ironically, you know who I think has has the best plate approach by far of this regional?
Ty f-ing Wilmsmeyer.
He's not swinging for the fences or pressing to get the big hit. He knows his job is to put the ball in play, and he's been doing exactly that and thus reaching base a lot. He reached in all 5 PA's on Friday and 4 of 5 PA's yesterday. He's also been hitting oppo quite a bit and pushing balls between 1st and 2nd.
Speaking of Wilmsmeyer, I just went back to watch the play on White's double. Wilmsmeyer was about three steps from second base when the ball hit the wall. The ball one-hopped and ricocheted off the player but not far away and he scooped it up pretty fast. There was one replay from a camera in right field but it zoomed too much to show where he was when the guy grabbed the ball.
Just based on where he was, it sure seems like he could've scored. I don't know if maybe there's another angle or someone who was there saw live what happened.
There was another play where I thought he very conservatively held a guy at third. I think that guy eventually scored, so it must have been against SEMO. Maybe it was on McLaughlin's double down the RF line.
Conservative running is fine with under two outs, but only IF you're going to play small ball at the plate when it's called for.
DVH got pissy at the end, mostly at Bob Dolt, which is understandable. Maybe that's good and will be used for extra motivation, but I thought it was defensive more than anything.
He said "I wouldn't wanna play us right now." When asked about that comment later (not by Bob), he doubled down, "Because of the way we're swinging the bats."
We swing at more balls in the dirt than any team I have seen. And we popped up to the infield a LOT last night. And we keep the bat on our shoulders a lot while watching a strike right over the plate. We need a lot of innings from Wood today. By the way, the game is at 1:00 on ESPN+. No PBP from me today, unless I can get un-busy by then. Right now, from the teams I have watched in the tourney, I don't see us as even a top 10 team.

It was frustrating watching them strike out on low pitches, but when the ump's zone starts about 3" above the ankle it has to fuck a hitter's mind.
If you had told any of us that we'd score six on twelve hits in a Hagen Smith start, anyone here would have taken the Hogs on the money line at any price. Just a weird game, weird way to lose.
On the plus side, I like how we're hitting. We are making solid contact, and with a couple of exceptions our approach is good. From where I sit I really thought White's ball would clear the fence. Get that one over and we're in a lot better mood today. And yes, Wilmsmeyer probably should have scored. He did have to freeze for a second to make sure the ball wasn't caught, but I think Nate should have sent him.
And how about Ben Bybee? Yeah he gave up the HR that ended up being the difference. But that was the best he's looked since he's been here against an opponent with a pulse. I found myself wishing we had saved him to start and brought in Wood instead.

Goes back to what we've been saying about our poor plate approach.
The team's general approach seems to mirror that of Diggs. Watch strike 1 (and often strike 2) down the chute, then chase a dirt ball for a strikeout. Holt does it a lot, Stovall has been doing it more lately, and even Sandlot has a penchant for it.
We swung at some terrible pitches yesterday and wasted too many AB's. White's check swing swinging bunt, too many dirt ball strikeouts (Wagner's might have been the worst), and too many infield pop ups on golf swings.

That's the weird thing. I loathe Nate Thompson and am beyond tired of our offensive futility, but I can't really blame the offense when we put up 6 runs in a Hagen start when he's usually had to make due with half that many or less in most of his starts this year.
Three things lost that game:
- Hagen completely losing it in the 5th
- Our inability to get on base early or the big hit, especially with RISP (and thus stranding 13)
- Having to blow Gaeckle in the SEMO game
#3 probably sounds odd, but I have to think DVH might've had a quicker hook with Hagen in the 5th if he'd had a fully rested Gaeckle ready to go. Maybe he pulls Hagen when TCU goes up 3-2 and Gaeckle has to face Culpepper instead of Hagen facing him for the 3rd time.
Quote from: Feral on Jun 02, 2024, 09:51 AMMaybe he pulls Hagen when TCU goes up 3-2
Those purple teams come at ya so fast.
Bybee threw only 39 pitches in three innings (compared with Neighbors throwing 67 in 3.1). He should have some good juice left.
If Wood can just make 3-4 innings that would be a huge lift.
At this point, we're basically going into a weekend series without Hagan, Tygart, Molina or Gaeckle.
I know they can probably throw a little (except Tygart), but more or less, this is what we're looking at. Some nuts are gonna have to drop in the bullpen for us to win 3.
I have my doubts that we win this game, let alone 3 in a row.
It doesn't make our loss sting less, but the SEC has struggled for the most part while the Big 12 has acquitted itself well.
Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Florida all face elimination today.
Vandy and Bama were both 2 and Q.
I still think we will either lose to SEMO or win the regional.
Faherty and Foutch are no slobs, and Hewlett may be capable of going longer than he has. Maybe a key surprise inning or so from Frank or Coil.
It really stinks that we've lost three guys to injuries, but the opportunity is there and maybe the bats are alive enough.

This team is schizophrenic and unpredictable.
Tournaments are interesting because everyone runs out of pitching to some degree. Despite what some may say here, our pitching staff is deep. SEMO will certainly not run out a bunch of guys throwing mid-90s today. We still can.

The problem is that our lineup has a penchant for making mediocre relievers and back of the rotation starters look much better than they are.
How many times has an opponent trotted out a 5.0+ ERA underclassman who proceeded to mow through our lineup?
Even KSU's starter last night wasn't exactly a quality arm. He was shelled by TCU in his last outing and only lasted 2.2, but somehow was able to outlast and out-pitch Hagen f-ing Smith last night.

Agreed on the bats. Contact has been better across the board. We just HAVE to cut out the popups.
Just put it in play. K-State has made 58 errors in 58 games (2 last night) and SEMO has made 63 in 61 games (3 on Friday and 1 on Saturday). For comparison, the Hogs have made 38 errors in 59 games.
The problem with us getting to the starting pitcher this year is that it usually doesn't happen until the seventh inning. That doesn't give you much leeway. In the past, we worked the opposing pitcher's count up pretty quickly. I suppose that could be why we take so many strikes this year.
Quote from: Son of Spam on Jun 02, 2024, 12:24 PMThe problem with us getting to the starting pitcher this year is that it usually doesn't happen until the seventh inning.
Yep.
We're not putting any pressure on opposing pitchers and forcing them to bear down or go to the stretch early in games (or even early in innings), and thus were not forcing them to stretch arms.
We tend to dick around the first 2 times through the order and not get going until the 6th or 7th, at which point we've totally taken the pressure off the opponent's bullpen.
Case in point, we had 5 total base runners in the first 4 innings last night, and all except 1 were with 2 outs.
We seem to have the exact opposite plate approach from our opponents. They make us pitch in the zone and only swing if it's close (thus we're issuing more walks), whereas we tend to watch a few pitches right down Broadway but chase away or in the dirt.
The lineup is getting more consistent. It makes sense to give White a break behind the plate on the theory there will be at least one more to play.

SEMO's coach said as much in his postgame comments. They knew our pictures try to make you chase pitches out of the zone, so they worked all week on only swinging at strikes. Instead of 5 swings in the cage during drills, then were thrown 5 pitches but could only swing at 2 out of the 5 pitches to work on being more selective. It paid off with 10+ walks on Friday.
Having to beat SEMO again may prove difficult. We've got to do a better job at getting their leadoff hitter out each inning and limit the free passes.

I was thinking the only benefit would be if Holt would drive one into a gap. But of course our guys love golf too much.
Yet another junk ball pitcher were making look like Greg Maddux.
Also, yet another inning where don't get someone on base until we have 2 outs because our first 2 hitters don't piss a drop.
Bottom of the second.
Mugan leads off. Singles on a slow grounder past Wood. 1 on.
Cannon goes down swinging. 1 away.
McGahan hits into a 4-3 DP.
SEMO up 1-0 after 2.
And yet another inning they get the leadoff man on.

We seem to be immune to getting the leadoff man aboard, yet we allow opponents to do it constantly.

Wilmsmeyer grounds out to third. 2 away.
Stovall grounds out weakly to second.

As fans, we see our own players hit so infrequently that when other teams hit an average amount, it impresses the shit out of us. That's how fucking awful our batting has been under Thompson. We make average look awesome.
We saw this guy for three innings on Friday and scored 3 runs against him. Where is that team?
Unfortunately, our bats don't hit when it matters. Every at bat matters in an elimination game. Too much pressure for this Charmin-soft offense.

Top of the fourth.
White leads off. Goes down swinging badly. We need to get some HS seniors to suit up and hit this 60 MPH pitcher. 1 away.
J SLott goes down swinging ugly at a ball low and outside. 2 away.
McLaughlin flies out to left.
We suck at the plate: 0 We can hit: 1
I predict we'll get a hit before the 8th inning.
This feels like one of those "welp, that's baseball" type of games.
This guy is mowing through our lineup, and when we actually do barrel up a pitch it's right at a defender.
DVH's bullshit about not wanting to face our team because now we were hitting...

Stauss (who homered last AB) runs the count full. Walks. Runners at first and second, no outs.
Cameron runs the count full. Singles to right. Run scores. 2-0 SEMO. Runners at the corners, no outs. We are toast.
Pitching change......Faherty in.
Mugan with a swinging bunt. Faherty tries to glove it to the catcher but screws it up. 3-0.
Cannon with a sac bunt. Runners at second and third, 1 out.
McGahan grounds to third. The throw goes home for the out. 2 away, runners at first and second.

From that same baseball coach I referenced earlier:
"I've never been a fan of his approach. There's NEVER talk of adjusting at the plate no matter where runners are, no matter count, nothing. He just preaches, 'only take your best swing.'"
That, combined with the earlier Tweet about pop-up practice just makes it all the more head-scratching why he's still employed.

Not being volatile isn't working out so well either.
DVH is here as long as he wants to be. He is revered here and in baseball coaching circles in general.
No reason to think about hiring another coach till DVH hangs it up.
He may have reached his peak or he may be baseball Tom Osborne. Either way, he's rock solid stable here.
In the famous words of Dennis Green, they are who we thought they were. We all had a pretty good pukse on this team a month in.

Quote from: Barton Fink on Jun 02, 2024, 05:35 PMIn the famous words of Dennis Green, they are who we thought they were. We all had a pretty good pukse on this team a month in.
Yep.
It was almost like football, where you could tell pretty quickly something was off about this team, at least offensively.
Looking back, we should've known something was up when we couldn't muster 2 runs against Oklahoma State in 14 innings in Arlington only to watch them get wrecked the next day.
Pitching carried this team, but great pitching and defense can only carry you so far and can only mask offensive deficiencies so much. Eventually your staff wears out from the pressure, and we didn't have enough offensively to ever take the heat off of them. I posted something a few weeks ago, but it was alarming how bad we were at providing run support to Hagen in nearly all of his starts this year.
This team was the baseball equivalent of Iowa football, even down to having a stubborn veteran head coach who doesn't adapt.
Stolen from the Rant (originally from TwiX), but pretty damning indictment against Nate Thompson.

Maybe Nate finds a job as the head coach at the Texas School of Cosmetology and we bring in a new hitting coach. 😎
Saw on Twitter that the 7 years with Thompson as hitting coach, we are hitting .176 in the postseason. Damn.
I wonder if DVH is considering retiring. A friend of mine knows him pretty well and talked to him for a while at the SEC Tournament last week. He said DVH seemed down then. But he loves his grandkids (and said he wants lots more), and made some comments about not being able to spend time with them.

He was asked earlier by Hutch the presser about any "decisions" to be made and sidestepped the question and talked about roster turnover. Good on Hutch for asking it again and making it specifically about Nate.
Interestingly, DVH said they expect to lose White and Diggs as well as the entire rotation.
I'm actually surprised at how DVH seemed to throw quite a few players under the bus. He mentioned something about the rotation and Hagen carrying them and "one guy's arm's always hurt, the other got wild." I was a bit surprised at the barbs about Tygart, as well as his comment about needing better players in general.
He didn't hang NT out to dry, but he sure did call out the personnel.

I'm certain Diggs wasn't coached to watch two right down the middle and then try to hit a ball on his shoelaces.
Aloy sure as hell wasn't coached to swing at a ball two feet over his head.
I caught the tail end of the postgame show on the radio. Phil and Bubba were talking about all the players that were leaving. We will apparently have basically a brand new team next year. So DVH has a lot of work to do in the next few months.
I hope he stays but he just looks kinda tired lately. And that's going to be a big rebuild.

Feels like we'll probably take a pretty significant step back next year unless we sign a baller portal class.
We return a lot of arms, but the entire lineup outside of Aloy is a question mark. Helfrick and Souza will be back, but both could benefit significantly from summer ball.

Kinda agreed.
If he is on the fence about retiring, I would rather him go now and hire a coach when we're coming off a season where we were #1 for a good portion of it...versus mail in next season and then try to hire a coach back when we're middle of the pack. We caught lightning in a bottle w/ the original Petrino hire and the Calipari hire, inheriting a shitty roster and no roster, respectively. We can't always count on that.
Granted, baseball facilities and fan support are a huge draw here vs what the rest of the country has for any coach.
That said, hopefully he gets a little more fire back in his belly and comes back for 2-3 years and wins one. He deserves it.

I could see that being the thing that pulls him away. I also think he would give anything to win a title. Lot of struggle between those 2 emotions.

Agree, if the coach keeps putting the player in the same situation and keeps getting the same subpar results or expects a different result suddenly - that is on the coach. It is pelfrey-esque.
And if a coach doesn't have a better option to put out there, that is on the coach too since he controls the roster.

DVH talked at several points in the season about how he challenged the team because they were "boring" and had no energy or identity. Hence the stupid gorilla doll and mask for home runs they came up with, which is funny in retrospect given how piss poor our offense was.
I thought that maybe that boring, workman-like grind mentality might pay off for us in the postseason because we've seen high passion teams flame out (2022 Tennessee). But alas it didn't. I think you actually need that energy to refuel you in the postseason.
That was one of the issues with this team. No leadership and no fire. Just felt like — offensively anyway — some guys were playing with an eye cast toward the draft.
Diggs was the baseball equivalent of Bumper Pool's football captaincy when he was our worst defensive player.
When recruiting the portal, I'm hoping DVH goes out and gets some high energy guys with leadership potential. Josenberger last year was a great example of what we need. Experienced hitter, good fielder, speedy, and respected vocal leader. Hate that we lost him to the draft last year, because he also could've solved our gaping hole in the outfield.
Back to the "who do we have coming back" discussion.
Position players
C - Helfrick
1B - Robinett (redshirted)
2B - ?
SS - Aloy
3B - Souza (or plays 2B)
LF - Edmunson & Jones
CF - ?
RF - Diggs (may be gone per DVH)
Pitchers
Gaeckle (probable starter)
Wood (probable starter)
Fisher (potential starter)
Bybee (potential starter)
Foutch
Coil
Hachman
Dossett
Faherty (?)
Carter (?)
All in all, I don't hate the pitching we have coming back. However, we have a shitload of holes all over our lineup, with Aloy likely being the only everyday player returning.
Better go recruit some bats because we have a lot of holes in the lineup to fill, and basically no depth.
Isn't this just a nice cap on a really shitty academic year for us? I mean how many programs manage to hit for the triple crown of failed expectations?
I'm not a big baseball fan but I do think DVH deserves to leave on his own terms, but we all know that's not how this works. There is an economy of expectations in addition to the on-the-field expectations. It only looks bad because our expectations are Omaha every year. We are "nationally competitive" each season but have flopped of late and probably need to make some staff changes like new hitting coach. Would be nice if we could get a chicken man for the baseball program too...maybe buy some guys that would otherwise be in the minor leagues. E.G...get some better athletes.
I know whatever revenue Baum brings in traditionally in the post season is a drop in the bucket but certainly has to hurt somewhere when we flop in the early going of the tournament. When we're good and winning an easy regional we're a lock for a super regional most years. That's not just our games that's hosting other games so it's a lot of gate fees not being collected. A lot of concessions not being sold etc. A lot of opportunity for ESPN to ignore us.
DVH isn't and shouldn't be going anywhere. Any suggestion to the counter is dumb.
We need to get back to Omaha to though.
could be worse, could have blown a lead to your hated rival at the end of the game.
fml :suicide:
It's a shame that a post season failure means failure all the way around but it does. Our program is at a place where only a title is going to scratch that itch. I'm just not going to get excited about or probably even bother to watch Razorback baseball in the future until we get to the WS. There just isn't really any point.

DVH effectively said in his press conference that we'd probably lose Diggs.
Lots of similarities between Diggs and Casey Martin. Fan favorite who showed flashes as an underclassman but ultimately a guess hitter who regressed and couldn't hit a breaking ball to save his life and prematurely left for the draft.
I don't know how to feel about Jones. He has power but is extremely undisciplined at the plate and is basically a home run or strikeout hitter with no in-between. He's not even a 3 outcome guy because he almost never walks.
Same for Souza, who regressed profoundly the last 2 months of the season and could benefit enormously from summer ball. Since the Ole Miss series he was 3-38 (.078) with almost 20 strikeouts, almost all of them swinging. To quote Ron Burgudy "I'm not even mad, I'm impressed."
DVH needs to start with a decent leadoff guy and poach that Kettering kid from his pal Sawyers at SEMO.

I think this is an incorrect assessment on Diggs. He's almost the polar opposite of Martin in that he's too selective. The injury had a greater effect than we realize. Kendall was hitting .345 with 6 HR when he hurt his shoulder. He hit nearly .300 with power last season against a full schedule. He's worth taking back and a solid bet to return to form if he wants to give it another try. A more accurate comparison at the plate for Diggs is likely 2023 Stovall. They had a similar injury. Being healthy was the difference between an all-SEC season and hitting .230-ish with no power for Stovall.
The better comp for Martin is Aloy. They both have massive power, and both seem to think they can yank any pitch regardless of spin or location out into the Hog Pen. It's like they both learned their hitting from Todd Butler instead of Vitello or Nate.

Does the 65 mph junkball pitcher have any eligibility left?
I'm going to backtrack a little bit from my criticism of DVH. After watching the press conference again, I'm not sure he intended to rip the current players. I think he was criticizing Nate Thompson.
He was responding to a question about Nate and he said a couple of interesting things.
1. He said no one works harder on analytics than Nate and that Nate really tries to train a swing.
2. He said we need better athletes and not 8 guys who go up there trying to hit a homerun.
I could be wrong, but I think DVH probably gave Nate some freedom to recruit the hitters than he wanted and teach them how he wanted them to swing.
Now that his strategy has clearly backfired, DVH is pointing it out. He also never gave a vote of confidence to the question.
I think we'll either see DVH play a more active role in player recruitment and development or possibly even move on from Nate Thompson.

Eh, I don't know about too selective. Bubba has talked on the radio about how you can tell by 10U ball if a kid is a first pitch swinger or a taker, and it's something you can't really coach into or out of them. Even DVH is saying they've been telling Diggs to stop taking so much early and swing away on the first pitch or two, but he didn't do it.
If Diggs was truly selective he'd be swinging at first (and second) pitch meatballs right over the plate. Instead he watches the first two pitches, fouls off the third, takes a ball, and then chases in the dirt. Wash, rinse, repeat.
By adopting this approach he puts himself in disadvantage counts and starts pressing.

DVH has always been more blunt than most about his players.
Also, if Nate is "training a swing", and DVH said we have 8 guys going up there to hit HR's, it seems obvious to me that Nate's strategy is to try and hit as many HR's as possible.
We finished 61st in the country in HR's, behind Wilmington and the powerhouse Columbia University who hit more HR's than us while playing 15 fewer games.
So, if we're trying to hit homeruns and aren't doing it, then what are we doing?

He hasn't been getting all that many meat balls over the plate. All strikes are not created equal.
I don't understand why pitchers haven't been firing dead red fastballs at him on every first pitch, but they haven't. Go back and watch from this weekend in particular...it didn't make sense.
If he was just taking for the hell of it he wouldn't be drawing as many walks as he does, even while unhealthy and getting in disadvantaged counts.
The approach is fine, but if you don't have the bat speed, power, or the confidence to use them, you aren't going to hit regardless of what pitches you're being thrown or how well you're seeing them.

I said after last season that Josenberger would be the key piece to this season if we could get him to come back. Losing him to the draft hurt.
He was a huge piece last year. Switch hitting center fielder who could run, had power, and could hit for average. We were never the same after his injury last year.
If he comes back in 2024, our OF doesn't have as many offensive holes in it, Holt plays LF, Wilmsmeyer is little more than a situational defensive sub and pinch runner, and we have a leadoff guy who allows Stovall to bat in the 2 hole where he belongs.
It wouldn't be a Razorback season without an early disappointing exit.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Jun 03, 2024, 09:12 AMIf he was just taking for the hell of it he wouldn't be drawing as many walks as he does, even while unhealthy and getting in disadvantaged counts.
That's the thing, he actually had one of the worst BB/K ratios in SEC play of our entire lineup, and the worst of the everyday players.
His BB/K ratio was nearly 1:3. Wilsmeyer's was 1:4 and Souza's was just shy of 1:4. Aloy's was 1:2.5, Stovall was over 1:2, Sandlot's was 1:1, and McLaughlin had more walks (28) than K's (18).

Look at last year when he was healthy. 26 BB to 29 K in SEC play. With an isoOBP (increase in OBP over batting average) of .146, which is really good. Even in limited time as a freshman he had 6 BB to 7 K and a .194 isoOBP.
You're judging him after he was clearly injured and assuming that's who he is as a player. The real crime was not having anyone better than the injured version to take his place after he was hurt.

Are you saying he's too old to be rehired later as an assistant for an under-performing and generally confused head coach?
We need some guys in the lineup who can get on base. Whether by a bunt or legging out a grounder or a walk, or whatever, just get on base. When you have baserunners, you have a lot more options as to what you can do. DVH used to champion the small ball game. He apparently abandoned that a few years ago. We almost never got the first batter of an inning on base.

I mean that was the whole point of the movie Moneyball. "Why do we want that guy? He gets on base."

I don't think DVH necessarily abandoned small ball this year as much as he was situationally hamstrung by our inability to get guys on base with less than 2 outs.
To your point, we almost never got the leadoff man on base. It seemed like we never generated traffic until we had 1 or 2 outs (usually 2) and thus no margin for error.
The other problem was that whenever we had advantage situations where we had a runner at 2nd and 3rd and a sacrifice opportunity to squeeze in a run, we were down by a margin that necessitated going for the 2 RBI base hit or 3 run homer instead of eating an out for a single run. Yesterday's game was a prime example of that, where we had that exact scenario but were down by 5 runs and in the late innings. At that point we were running out of outs.

I mean they seriously simplified the whole saber metrics thing but it doesn't matter if he has two blown knees and has never played the position you want him at you still have to sign Chris Pratt because he finds a way to get on base.
Let's at least use the portal to find dudes that get on base whether it's from getting hit by pitches or getting walked, as long as they don't strike out staring at fastballs down the center and then swinging at sliders in the dirt.
You have to play gorilla ball at this level, but goddamn it doesn't kill you to take one the other way with RISP every now and then.

If offense woes were just this year, I'd blame player personnel. We have finished 10th or below in SEC for batting avg each of the past 5 years. We were top 3 in 2018 and 2019.
It's coaching.
We struggled to get guys on base AND had no power. That is a recipe for disaster (for most teams) in this day and age. We severely lacked a power threat in the lineup. That alone might have helped how some guys were pitched.

Do the analytics say that players shouldn't cut down their swings with two strikes anymore? Our guys all seem to maintain the same loopy upper cut swing regardless of the count, situation, shift, etc. I would love to have some guys that can cut down their swing and slap the ball through the left or right side, based on the shift.

We also need to recruit guys with the clutch gene. We were last in SEC in BA with RISP. We don't lose a single home series the past two regular seasons but get knocked out of our own regional as #3 and #5 national seeds.

I'm not sure I agree with the statistical groupthink on this, but statheads are adamant that close and late stats remain the same for players as their regular stats over a large enough sample. I think there's some truth to it in looking at our team. It's not that they choke in the clutch...they just aren't that great as hitters, and we don't hit for enough power in spite of a philosophy that demands it.
Part of the problem I think is that we didn't adapt our hitting philosophy to the types of players we have on campus. You can play gorilla ball with Kjerstad, Fletcher, Cole, Shaddy, etc. You can't when your best hitters are middle infielders (current or former) and a contact hitting first baseman.

I noticed, early in the season, when our hitting was so bad, that nearly all of our hitters weren't watching the ball all the way into the bat. They seemed to be looking out in the field to where they thought the ball would go if they actually made contact. I got into one of those batting cages where you pick a speed, put some money in, and it pitches to you. I put it on fast. First time, I didn't hit a ball. I was looking to where I thought I was going to hit it. Next time, I focused on the ball all the way in and hit nearly ever pitch. We need a hitting coach.

This is common in hitters in baseball and also golf. Pulling your head before contact because you want to see where the ball is going. Working on keeping the eyes on the point of contact, thru contact, is a habit that has to get relearned often.

Slavens used to do this often, flaring his head before contact and disrupting his barrel path.
Diggs does it all the time. Ditto for Aloy and Souza. Stovall had a penchant for it as well on those long loads and big cuts. Sandlot had a tendency to swing out of his shoes (he had several AB's this regional where he went to a knee).

I see it on our 10u team a lot. What's interesting is I mostly see it creep up in our best hitters, boys you might not expect it with. And just from throwing BP a couple of times a week at them, I notice it's usually the favorite pitch for that particular hitter, and rarely the balls on the outskirts of the zone. Why?
My bullshit dad-coach theory is that of the pitches a kid might swing at, the ones on the outskirts of the zone are given a greater level of concentration since he believes its a strike, hence why he decides he's gonna swing. But since it's not where he loves it, he tracks it for X milliseconds longer. So when contact is made if his head was pointing in the right direction, it's likely his eyes were too.
With a hitters favorite pitch though I think things change. He's so confident with that pitch that he's swinging with more muscle memory, and less concentration, so he (often to his demise) has his head pointing in the right direction, but his eyes are "out ahead," and looking for the ball coming off the bat. That no bueno.
Cage hitting is really good for breaking/relearning this. It naturally brings the hitters focus into nothing but the pitch because after 2 or 3 good ball strikes kids loose interest in where the ball lands (or how far it goes), which is at the heart of the issue here.
I have a really good friend who's a great golfer. My uncle Bob Teas was a pro. I loathe the game. Whenever I play with either of them, they have to remind me around every other hole to keep my eyes on the back of the ball THRU the swing, and not try to "follow" the ball with my eyes immediately after contact like I love to do.

When I first started playing, an older gentleman that I was paired up with at razorback told me a valuable lesson and one that has helped me be a "Decent" golfer over the years. I say decent as it mean just that, not good but decent for someone that doesn't play too often. He said your job is to keep your eye on the ball and hit it, our job is to watch where it goes. That stuck with me for some reason 30+ years later and I usually ask the people I'm playing with to watch where my ball goes and I do the same for them. Simple thing, but it helped me to just concentrate on the ball and not where it goes.
Might help baseball players too as it doesn't matter where it goes, you hit it and you run like fucking hell. First base coach will help you track it and whether to go for 2 or not, then when you make the turn you can pick up the ball and such.
Hand/eye coordination. Eye on the ball all the way to the bat. I sure didn't look like our guys were being taught that this year. Another thing I noticed was that most of our "hitters" were swinging for the fence every time, when we just needed to make good contact and maybe get a single. Like someone said, a couple of guys were swinging from their knees. And we swung at a lot of balls in the dirt. We just weren't good at the plate. And as far a golf, the other guys usually lose mine as it goes into the woods.

Despite Moneyball, the eye test is still a real thing. We won games, but we didn't look good. We only looked good due to pitching. Our hitting never looked good, not once the whole year. Then when in a simple regional your pitching gives up 9, 7, and 6, then your hitting looks like what it looked like. Caca.

Our hitting really hasn't looked good since the 2021 SEC tournament, save for a blip at the end of 2022.
In my (worthless) opinion, "keeping your eye on the ball" is much more important in baseball than in golf because, in baseball, the ball is obviously in constant motion.
The golf ball is stationary--just innocently sitting there minding its own business. Theoretically--if a golfer's setup (stance/ball position, grip, and posture) and swing are consistent--the ball simply gets in the way of the clubhead just before the swing path's low point every time.
The oft-repeated "keep your head down and your eyes on the golf ball" is good advice but more so to keep the golfer in posture and thus avoiding early extension.
On the other hand, if your golf swing is as inconsistent as mine you can look at any damn thing you want to and it won't make a bit of fucking difference. :suicide:

DVH made a comment in his last presser that we looked worn out.
Basically said nearly all of our conference games were close (even our midweeks at times), and we we never blew anybody out and never got blown out.
When you are continually in close games in baseball either way you never have the opportunity to breathe, and the types of low scoring games we were in ultimately wore our pitching staff out. Even getting blown out is a good thing sometimes in baseball because you can just pack it in and have somebody in the bullpen be the sacrificial lamb and eat innings.
Even Hagen wore down. His starts and innings were always close because he got virtually no run support, so he had to lock in and bear down. You wonder if those stressful innings wore him down moreso than if we'd had 5 or 6 run leads in his starts over the course of the season.

This sounds a lot like scripts and schemas. In CogSci we learn about how the brain develops these things that are intended to make our cognition more efficient. If something is similar to something we've experienced before, our brain tells us it's the same thing (like instinctively and subconsciously jumping to a conclusion based on information at hand). For the most part, this works well and streamlines energy use and speeds up cognition. However, when something violates these schemas/scripts (like a ball dropping out of the zone when we expected it to be like the 10 pitches that came before it that presented with the same arm motion and initial location) it can gum up the works.
It's hard to rewire the brain when these are naturally hardwired in. It goes back to the whole top-down vs bottom-up cognitive processing and trying to force a switch between the two.
I think it was in the late 80's there was a study done which claimed that over a certain velocity it's technically impossible to "keep your eye on the ball" the entire time. It also had something to do with the angle of the batter and trying to track the ball the entire way to the plate.
You can stand on 1st or 3rd and track it the entire time, but trying it from the batters box is technically impossible according to the study.
Could be BS tho I don't know
Apparently you could write a three digit number on a ball with an ink pen in normal sized handwriting and have a pitcher pitch that ball to Ted Williams and he could tell you what the number was.
Quote from: Feral on Jun 04, 2024, 11:48 AMDVH made a comment in his last presser that we looked worn out.
I think that after about the third or fourth game I posted that we were going to be in a lot of one run games this year. I could tell right then from our lack of hitting. And I never believed for one minute that we were ever the #1 team in the nation. Pitching can only carry you so far and even the best pitchers are going to have an off day or two. Our hitting (or lack thereof) screwed us all year. I told my wife after about the third game that we needed to get our hitters some of those glasses that make things larger to wear while hitting.

If Phil Niekro was throwing that knuckle ball, you could probably read all the lettering on it.

True.
Have you guys ever tried to play catch with someone who could really throw a knuckle? We used to have this kid in legion who could do it and it would get so bad that you would want to go down and knock him up side the head to make him stop.

Lots of stories like that...
Supposedly Stan Musial had a "dent" on the barrel of his wooden bat from hitting the ball in the same spot on the bat every time. He also refused to go to the movie theater because he thought it would effect his eye sight and hurt his hitting.

Bob Uecker said the best way to catch one was to let it quit rolling and then go pick it up.
Quote from: DirkPiggler on Jun 03, 2024, 09:37 AMRunning off Dave Van Horn would be the dumbest move this athletic department has ever made, and that's in a program known for catastrophic blunders.
That move would be Chad-esqe.
Some light criticism of Dave is warranted. But if we ran him off, he would probably take another job and win three championships in a row. That would be very Arkansas.

Wasn't the same said of Muss not too long ago?
We need some pitchers like Charlie Boyce on the roster.
- would help our hitters to face off speed in practice
- would help to have an off speed guy to throw in post season
- would be nice to have a guy who could eat some innings when needed
The shift in baseball to all power is nice, I guess, but it still comes down to the fundamentals- throwing strikes, putting the ball in play and playing defense.
What did all that launch angle, velocity, and spin rate get us?
I hate LSU but those dudes are always playing ball at the end of the year old school style and it wins.

It did seem that a lot of our pitchers only had a fast ball. Tygart seemed to have a new pitch this year but couldn't control it. You can only throw fast balls at a team for about one time through the rotation.
I'd take a team full of singles hitters if we can produce about 15 a game.
Just put the damn ball in play.

This. It got real tiresome when every announcer would spout that off like they were actually adding something worthwhile to the game. Maybe pull those stats out when one gets crushed to the next county, but when it barely clears the fence, I don't need to hear anything other than an update to the score (only because I'm probably a few drinks in at that point and can't be bothered to do math) and maybe the hitter's hr total for the season.

Agreed. Any coach is fair game for criticism. But we have to keep things in perspective.

I had a cousin that could throw one. It was like trying to catch a butterfly.
I want to say it was Kopps a few years ago, but maybe it was someone else, who had a no-no thru 7 and DVH pulled him. I lost my shit in that game thread over that, and a few woopiggers couldn't understand my disgust. That's new baseball for ya.
That will always be DVH in a nuttshell for me. Stuck between the old game and the new, and insecure about which approach to take. And that insecurity is why he comes across lately as defensive in press conferences.

Phil and Bubba were talking on the radio about Tygart's new "sweeper" pitch early in the season.
My gut response was "oh great, another breaking ball he won't be able to locate."

In Arlington, when Smith had tied the game strikeout record, it was the end of the 6th.
Dave didn't send him back out to face a single batter in the 7th, and also didn't give the fans a chance to give him a standing O. I hated that in the moment.
He could have easily set the record. He was rolling. At the very least give him one more batter so we could cheer for him.

We need some mens to hit a directional school junkball pitcher?
That's why DVH's "we need better athletes" rant in his last presser fell flat, acting like we just got mowed down by Paul Skenes.

I saw a quote during the regional, I think it was either from the K St coach or maybe SEMO. They said that they didn't want guys that played baseball, they wanted baseball players. DVH needs to get baseball players.
I suppose the historical significance of today has caused me to become introspective; but--and I say this without an ounce of sarcasm and certainly not as an indictment against others--I am so thankful that I live in a time and place where one of my biggest sources of anxiety is whether a bunch of 18 year olds will win or lose a game.

And I have said many times about coaches, I'm really glad the success in my job isn't determined by the consistent performance of 18-23 years old guys. :D
Aloy's little bro transferring in from BYU.
For comparison, 2024 stats:
Little Brother
He played in 52 games. Batted .269 (53/197), slugged .447, 8 homers, 62 strikeouts, 27 runs, 38 RBIs
Big Brother
He played in 56 games. Batted .270 (64/237), slugged .485, 14 homes, 55 strikeouts, 45 runs, 56 RBIs

.220 with 2 HR playing every day in Big XII games.
But he was a true freshman. I'm sure the adjustment was pretty big.

Great. Less power and higher whiff rate.
He shall be dubbed Aloha Lite.
