Can anyone beat Scotty?
I think not, if he can putt just a tad better this weekend.
Dechambeau has actually been acting like a relatively normal human being lately. For once, I may not actively root for him to lose.
Scheffler has to be one of the biggest favorites to win this tournament since Tiger was in his prime.

To me, he is playing that well, but without the flair for the dramatic shot that Tiger had. And his game is made for the US open. Fairways and greens... But he is going to have to make some 8ft putts this week.
And I forgot-- he spells it with "ie". It's Scottie.
I spent most of this morning as a green side spotter on Hole 1. The hole is only playing at 395 yards so the players were hitting irons off the tee, leaving an approach of 130 yards or so. Today's pin was approximately 10-12 paces from the front.
If you are familiar with #2, you know the greens are basically inverted bowls averaging 6000+ square feet but with only about half of that being puttable without risking watching the ball roll completely off the green. This morning the greens were rolling at 13.5 feet and that was after an overnight shower.
It was interesting, to say the least, seeing some of the best players in the world hitting dead-hand wedge shots that dropped from outer space to 6 feet short of the pin and still watching the ball trickle off the green and back down the fairway.

Obviously it's hard to pick against Scottie but I think Xander might just stay hot and win again.

This is why the USGA sucks sometimes. Hitting a ball 6 feet from the pin, and then get penalized for hitting a great shot by the ball rolling off the green. What a joke.
There have been fairways in the past that literally will not hold any shot and some greens from any fairway shot. I think they are few and just a slight miscalculation in set up. It happens and is part of it. The players know when a shot pin high six feet from the flag will end up off the green. It seems like the players that win put that shot 40 feet away and get it down in two.

It's not a great shot if it rolls off the green. Hogan said that if you ever saw him hit it at the pin, it was a mishit. On lots of greens in US Open he would intentionally aim for a spot off the green knowing that he would be far more likely to get up and down from off the green than make par on it or have it roll off to a bad spot.

Yeah, occasionally the USGA goes a little crazy, like they did a few years ago on that course in Oregon (I think). That was really screwy.
I don't expect that at Pinehurst.

Yeah, it's a pretty well known story. After winning at Oakmont and not hitting one of its bunkers all week, some lady remarked to him as he came off the course that he sure had been lucky that week not to hit any. Hogan dryly remarked that it seemed that, "The more he practiced, the luckier he got."

I don't think the USGA can really be blamed for the greens (other than maybe extreme pin placements).
#2 has no water hazards to speak of, no rough, and the fairways are relatively straightforward. The course's primary defense is its greens and Ross designed them to accept and hold only the most precise shots at each pin location or the golfer will pay the price. As a general rule, long is dead on most of the greens.
The course was closed for a year in 2010 to allow Ben Crenshaw to remodel/restore it and--although every hole was changed in some manner--all the greens except two were left as Ross designed them.

He did. It's in several Hogan biographies. I've read them all.
Kris Tschetter who played at TCU and knew Hogan really well, credits Hogan with saying. Player, who was always known to have a tenuous relationship with the truth, wrote a book in 1962 in which he credited the saying to Miller Barber, I think. Only later did he claim the story about practicing.
Odds are neither one of them said it first. It's a common saying that's been around in some form or the other form more than a 100 years.
I've spent too much time on this. Here is an interesting article that mentions a lot of people, but not Hogan.

And yes, Miller Barber was from Texarkana. Considered TCC his home club.
Bill Rogers, who won the British Open in about 1982, was also from Texarkana. His brother Rick Rogers was a lawyer who later became the head pro at Northridge Country Club in Texarkana. Bill always considered Northridge his home club. Not Rick. Rick played TCC every weekend till he quit practicing law and started at NCC as the pro. Rick always said TCC was the far superior course.
I knew Rick well, and met Bill a few times. Both nice guys. Most of the people that really knew them well said that if Bill had Rick's competitiveness, he would have been an all time great.

Back to the U.S. Open. On BetSaracen I've got Adam Hadwin (+15000), Sahith Theegala (+4000), Wyndham Clark (+6000) and Xander Schaffele (+900).

If Scottie keeps playing like this, "Scottie-proofing" Calcuttas might become a thing.

I run a small pool of pick 6 (across multiple tiers) with the best 4 scores each day are counted. Obviously, that format in and of itself limits how much he contributes to the pool outcome.
But I've tried different approaches to mix it up and get some variety in the picks. The latest one that's stuck is allowing his scores to be counted in only two rounds out of four. It seems to be just enough of a psychological ploy that it works.

 Interesting. Sounds like you're sort of "Semi-Scottie-Proofing" it. He's currently +260 on BetSaracen to win the U.S. Open, which sounds pretty good, until you let it sink in that you're taking him against the entire field. Golf is a hard sport to dominate.
Those Calcuttas I used to play in were some pretty high-dollar affairs, kind of like what JD is talking about at the Texarkana CC I'd imagine. In those you had to buy the winner to win. All the high-rollers would outbid everybody else for Tiger and they'd usually win back when he was almost unstoppable.
Us poor folks were left to bid on everybody else. One year, I think it was '07, I got lucky. It was The Masters. I bought Zach Johnson for next to nothing and lo and behold he won. :)
Practice is over (for the players and for the marshals) and you can feel the whole vibe changing.
Got to run the directional paddles for Finau and Harris English on the tee box today--intimidating but fun.
The amount of infrastructure required for these major tournaments is mind-boggling.

Yeah, the rule is everyone gets two Tier 1 selections (usually top 10-15 depending on field size). Both choices are restricted to two rounds and can't be both in the same round. It's really made the whole thing more fun.
They talked about the Scottie v. the field bet on Golf Channel and no one was willing to take him. As good as he's been, he's not Tiger (yet) and this golf course can produce a very unexpected winner (see the last two there).

Right about the infrastructure, for sure. We went to the US Open at Congressional that Rory ran away with a long time ago. Maybe 2011? Somewhere around there.
I was amazed at the infrastructure then, and I suspect it is even greater now. The portable "tent style" buildings (my term, don't know what they are really called) were amazing-- a huge one for the American Express Lounge/food court (worth every penny of what I paid for my American Express card that year) and the one for the US Open clothing/memorabilia were huge, guessing 20k sq ft each. And there were a dozen more sponsored by different companies-- AT&T, etc. The food service places were plentiful and generally handled the volumes of people well.
I said then I can now understand why these things take so many years to plan.

Well, this post is definitely not about Tiger. Scottie is definitely a little off today. He usually hits fairways and greens. He's pulling his drives to the left today, and rarely on the green in regulation. Working his ass off to get up and down for pars.

It was obvious he was struggling with his irons this morning but no one would come out and say it. They atta-boyed his long lag putting after squirrelly approaches and some early par saving putts.

During the afternoon broadcast, Tirico had a recap of what happened during the morning. It was almost ALL Eldrick. Him putting, him hitting iron shots, showing his score, how many greens he hit, etc. He was EIGHT shots off the lead, in 167th place, but they pumped him up. Well good, I did miss that.
He knows Tiger better than most, so maybe he feels more comfortable doing that.
But moving on to the First Flight of the tournament, I'm concerned Rory may let the demons in even though he salvaged what could've been a high number.
Dbaggo won't go away but he does seem to be more humble. I just don't like how he's continuing to push the edge on club conformity.
I'm not convinced Cantlay can hold it together. Ryder Cup aside, he seems to have occasional give-up in his game. Or maybe more fairly just can't seem to right himself when it starts going sideways.

Cantlay went to UCLA. Not that anyone cares that much about sports out there, but elsewhere those would be fighting words.

This hole Finau is playing makes me feel like a good golfer.
1 - in fairway
2 - hits green but rolls off in a valley
3 - putts from below the green, over the green, into bunker on the other side
4 - bunker shot back over the green and into the valley
Lying 4 in the same spot he was lying 2.

Yep
https://www.livgolf.com/news/having-built-a-championship-team-bryson-and-his-crushers-resolve-to-stay-on-top
Got a pretty good golf tournament going on. After 13 holes it's McIlroy (-8), DeChambeau (-7) and Cantlay lurking at (-5). Rory has rolled in 3 birdie putts of over 20 feet and the crowd has gone wild. DeChambeau hears the roar then grips and rips a 300 yard drive in response, often ends up in the wire grass rough but consistently scrambles his ass off from there. Should be a good finish coming up.
Damnit. Rory just can't help himself. He tried to hit the perfect shot on 15 instead of playing it safe, a "beautiful" tee shot lands within 6 feet of the hole but rolls off the inverted turtle-shell green, and nestles at the bottom of the hill in a mixture of sand and wire grass. Probable bogey here.
McIlroy pays the price, his bogey leaves him tied with DeChambeau at (-7). DeChambeau sticks the landing on his drive onto the turtle-shell green at the 15th, and has about a 20-foot birdie putt for the lead coming up.
Amazing that Bryson is in this since he can't hit a fairway
Several short putts missed by Rory and dechambeau in the closing holes. They're trying to give it away.
Oooooooh, DeChambeau not only misses the 20-footer for birdie but also misses the 4-foot comebacker for par, and now he's one back at (-6)...Meanwhile Frenchy Pavon is making a late move to get to (-3), Cantlay still lurking along at (-5). The USA! USA! chants from the DeChambeau fans have gone quiet with the bogey.
And now Rory misses a 2 footer. Tied now.
Finau birdies 18 to get into the clubhouse with the lead at (-4).
Dechambeau sticks it on the 17th green, decent shot at birdie for the lead
DeChambeau just hit a helluva shot on 17.
Rory choking it away.
And he's missed the birdie putt
Just hit it in the fairway. Both of them on 18 in the sand.
Beautiful chip by Rory to give him a shot at par
McIlroy is a choking dog.
And Rory misses the par putt
Choked!
The putt he just missed was 3 feet, 9 inches.
Sloppy ending by both McIlroy and DeChambeau

He's definitely an opinionated little fuck. But Bryson was lucky several times. As is most every player that wins a major.
Bryson was lucky down the stretch, but no more so than Rory. I forget the hole, but the grand stands prevented Rory from going 50+ yards into trouble and on the next hole, the gallery prevented his ball from going quite a bit further off line and into the woods.
The take away for me was Rory choking in the big moments and to some degree, Bryson stepping up.

I'm sure a lot of that is just the kind of guy he is, but I also wonder if it's part of the LIV strategy to become more fan friendly. If so, nice work.
Scheffler kind of proved the point of the guys who went LIV a few years ago. He talked about how fatigued he was after yesterday's round. He said he didn't get to prepare like he would have wanted because The Memorial was last weekend and he was not going to miss Jack's tournament.
As much as we like to see the best players play week to week, the greats and potential greats all realize soon enough that they only have so much gas in the tank and begin concentrating on majors.
I'm a PGA guy also, but I also enjoy watching LIV. I'll be in attendance at the LIV event in Nashville this week, can't wait.

Wolken wrote a column on how Rory is turning into the Greg Norman of this generation.
Tiger's last major win before the '19 Masters was the '08 U.S. Open that he won on a torn knee and played 91 holes at Torrey Pines. He was 32, about to turn 33 that December.
Rory is 35 and while I don't think he's necessarily done winning majors, that might have been his last chance. The fields are so deep now and the fact he's not won a green jacket and now has that epic choke in his memory bank, it's got to weigh heavy on him.

It's not that simple. The players want a shorter season altogether so they've had to condense the schedule.
They've gotten the cadence they want with one huge event each month March through July. Those old line non-majors like Riviera, Bay Hill and Memorial aren't going to accept a date in the latter part of summer or early football season.
This year it's further complicated by the Olympics. Next year is going to be even MORE full for some of the top guys with the new Tiger and Rory indoor league.
The other big problem is continuing to force the players into a minimum number of events in order to be eligible for year end PIP bonuses.
There will need to be a major shakeup to get everyone back together.
It's an unsustainable model. Big sponsors are likely to keep pulling out, which I guess ironically enough may help cut some events to lighten the load.

Nobody said it would be easy. I wonder if they wouldn't be better off to lose a couple of tournaments. They don't have to play every weekend.
I certainly realize they want to maximize their exposure. But you just can't force all the big names to appear for the "signature" events when they are back to back to back.

Losing events means negative economic and charitable impact in those communities. It doesn't mean that won't eventually happen and I think is really the only outcome.
After nearly 20 years of making all the right moves and saying all the right things, Rory's image is starting to take a hit.
First, he looks childish by arguing with a caddy on the green at the Ryder Cup, and then goes after multiple guys in the parking lot, one of which is probably the most liked dude in golf.
Then he leaves most or all of his board positions on the PGA tour. Although, there's a good chance that may have been justified based on Monahan's handling of LIV.
Then after the US Open, he doesn't congratulate Bryson in person and doesn't address the media.

Not a good idea from a liability standpoint. I have defended a couple of those security cases where the watering hole's bouncer beat the shit out of the drunk guy. Not easy to defend.

Well, if you watch the video, the cops didn't calmly but firmly apprehend them. One of them thought he was Reggie White coming in for a blindside sack.

When I watched it I thought, dang they bumrushed those idiots! Good. A few eye gouges or purple nurples would be good too.

In the Rocket Mortgage tourney just now, one of the co-leaders drilled a 97 yard tee shot right into the trees. 97 yards.....

Yeah, any of us could do that but maybe not the follow up, smoke a drawing 5-wood around that tree 250 yards near the green, then a simple pitch and putt for par.

True. I have just never seen a pro drill a shit off the tee that straight into the trees. It looked like one of my tee shots.
I saw Jesper Parnivek miss a homicide charge by about six inches during a practice round in Tulsa. It was 18 at Southern Hills and the spectators were lined up about 75 yards on either side out from the tee box. He hit a duck hook that took and incredibly hard turn at head height at 75 yards and six inches and just missed some dude.
And yeah, he still parred the hole. lol
This finish is starting to look like a bunch of guys who haven't won much. And it's clear why.
Bhatia is going to be a star, but these guys are giving it to him.
CHOKED!
Yeah I guess stardom is going to be delayed. My jinx record remains untarnished though.
Quote from: Son of Spam on Jun 30, 2024, 05:13 PMCHOKED!
Yes he did. I got a little nervous for him when he left that 34 ft. birdie putt for the win a little too short. That's where the choke began. I agree with TRS though, I think he's going to be a star. He's only 21. And he's got a look about him at 6'1", 130lbs.
He's the guy who looks sort of homeless isn't he?

Evidently that's not all he can pile drive.

He's doing fine, has already won twice in two years.
And yes, there can be no doubt the attraction.
