Title: The last Southwest Classic (I hope)
Post by: jdcatty on Sep 22, 2024, 06:23 PM
I am actually thinking of going Arlington for the game?  Anybody else going?  I don't have tickets if anyone is trying to dump some.

Yeah, we'll be there. Fun game and a great atmosphere. Especially when we win.

i'd be shocked if it isn't the last southwest classic. both schools are pretty tired of it.

We went the first 5 or 6 games and lost interest in the atmosphere. 30 minute drive there, 1.5 hour drive back, $80+ for a shitty seat to watch us get our asses kicked again on the big screen in jerrah's crooked stadium.

I'm going to Dallas this weekend.  I don't have a ticket.

I'll bite the bullet this week and buy a ticket.

I feel better knowing Petrino always took this game seriously by doing what he called Game Planning. It feels like one of those deals where if we win this one we're a bowl team. If we don't probably not. Ok Lite game would come back to bite us in the ass. We need this one for the Texas Bowl.

I don't drink the kool-aid on A&M looking lack luster...they always do in the early season. They tend to be one of those teams that will put together a sleepy 9 or 10 win season and be totally disappointed about it.

Louisiana Tech and Moo U are wins. If we can't beat an uninspired LSU team off a bye week after they play Ole Miss then something is very wrong. They also lost Perkins for the year and he terrorized us.

I think I had us at 6 wins including OSU, Moo State, and either Auburn or this game.  I thought Elko would have them playing better by now but I'm thinking this could very well be a win.  If we get the ball with 3 minutes to go in the half and 3 timeouts and just run the clock out I'll drive across the state to shit in Sam's yard.

I understand that is what is on the schedule.  And I guess I believe that will happen.  But I wonder what Jerry is cooking up next.  He likes us having a game there.  I can see his money influencing Yurachek into a new deal-- maybe a two year contract with someone like TCU?

It will be tough for them to put something together without buying out a shit ton of contracted games.

This is what our non-conference schedule looks like for the foreseeable future.

2025: Notre Dame
2026: @Utah
2027: Oklahoma State
2028: @Notre Dame
2029: Utah
2030: @Texas Tech
2031: Texas Tech
2032: @Oklahoma State
2033: Oklahoma State.

We also a tougher than normal NC opponent in Memphis in 2025 (in Memphis), 2026 and 2028.

The earliest I would think we could get in a Jerry World game without replacing a rent-a-win would be the 2030 Tech series.  Maybe they would be for it, and I could also see OSU being willing to move their last home-and-home down there.  Replacing one of the cupcake games off any of those 2025-2029 schedules with a marquee opponent in Dallas would pretty much doom our chances at bowl eligibility in most years.  Especially in the years where we have a tough NC opponent on the road.

We don't really have the room in the schedule.

As appealing as it would be for the fans, there is a very real chance the Hogs could go 1-3 with a non-conference like this in a normal year.

@ Memphis
Notre Dame
Decent noncon in Jerry World
Arkansas State

With the SEC schedule I think we're limited to one good non-conference opponent per year.  I do like the idea of one good one, one decent mid-tier like Memphis and Tulsa, one in-state cupcake and one out-of-state rent-a-win.

Not too concerned about doing a two game series there every once in a while or somewhere but there should have never been some 10-15 year deal there. Jeebus. Horrible.

How about not letting Jerry tell us how to run the Hogs. If he gives us money, fine, but no need to have any say so in where the games are played or personnel decisions. It's obvious he is not good at that.

If green completes over 55% of his passes, i would say we can compete with everyone we have left on our schedule;

This week is going to be a dogfight.  They can and will run the football on us...as per 96.3% of all football games played today, it'll be who doesn't fuck up in the red zone

it's like wash, rinse, repeat...three four down lineman...two deep safeties...you can have 4-6 yards every play if your five can block their four

We have to protect the football. Green almost fumbled the snap in Jackson's last score in the goal line. That toss play needs to go today. Already fucked us once.

As a general statement, I hate tosses on the goal line (and in general).

It's basically forcing a tailbacks to catch a pass while simultaneously using their vision to determine their run lane. Too much opportunity for error.

Better to do it now with low expectations than to wait for a time when we're ranked and the sky is the limit and then thud because it always happens that way except for that time when it didn't but even then we were tied for the championship. Excluding basketball. We're a caught foul ball away from being winners at life perpetually it seems.

I hate this game. Something insanely weird always happens to us.

I was just telling my BIL that I am confident the Hogs will be on defense, leading by 1 with 15 seconds left in the game, will intercept a pass at the 50, and will mistakenly run the ball back into our own end zone and toss the ball into the stands with 00:00 on the clock.

I'd like to have Clark back for depth, but would be afraid he would cut into Metcalf's minutes a little too much.

We miss Braxton.  Need someone to take more of #15's snaps.

Jersey #15 on defense for Hog football is getting to be like #4 used to be for basketball.  It's like the complete opposite of what LSU does with #18 or Ole Miss does with Chuckie Mullins' old number.

Sategna and Green both hurt that last offensive drive.

If Sategna doesn't try to Willy Mays the ball, that's likely a touch back. Instead he fair catches it on the 8.

He and Green cost the offense 20 yards between them.

Green's got to speed up that clock in his head by about 3 seconds. Also Jackson is terrible at pass pro. Gave no effort on that last 3rd down.

Zero chance we win this game.

Play calling is terrible.
Line can't pass block.
Green is a headcase.
Punt return is itching screw up.
Defense is going to get gassed given how the offense keeps hanging them out to dry.

I don't think Singleton would do anything in the shit protection we have.  Green is a far bigger threat to get away and make something out of nothing.  Green's biggest issue is holding the ball too long because he wants to see the play unfold instead of trusting the receiver to be where he's supposed to... or trust that he's reading the right throw enough to throw on time.  With our shit protection, that just means... well, we saw it today.

Bobby's offense at Aggy last year was pretty good until they had to play the 3rd string QB and injuries at other positions started to pile up, and that was with him being hamstrung by Jimbo.  I have 0.0% confidence that Pittman really is staying totally out of Bobby's way.

I know people were bitching about the TO before the fake because most thought we'd end up punting, but I think we should have. Would have flipped the field, pinned them deep and our D was still holding them to 3 and outs. It may not have changed the outcome, but it would have made our playcalling much different than always starting on our 20 or worse.

We aren't winning six games.

Tennessee will boat race us.
Ole Miss will be focused on their hunt for a playoff spot.
LSU will simply out talent us.

Miss St and LaTech are wins

Texas will murder us.

I think he survives 6-6, especially if we start looking competent on offense (a big if, I know). I think whoever is in charge up there would be willing to give him another change if it looks like we have something going instead of rolling the dice on our 6th or 7th option. 6 wins also means beating either TN, Ole Miss, LSU, or Missouri. They'd carry him off the field and really finish off Hasz's back.

Beating OSU was our path to a bowl. Looking like 5-7 now.

The schedule is too hard for us to piss away games.

People keep counting MSU as a gimme win, but it wouldn't surprise me if we fuck around and beat someone like Ole Miss or LSU and still lose to Mississippi State to go 5-7.

I assume T-Will was the one who decided that the series immediately after the go ahead FG was a great time to rest the starting DL, and that they needed to rest for the entire time while the backups were getting abused by a previously nonexistent running game.

His game plan up to that point was great, but he can tote his ass with the rest of them once we lose our 7th game.  And yes that includes Petrino.

Never have I seen a fake FG after taking a time out. 10 times out of 10 you go ahead take the delay penalty and punt the ball. In a game like todays, Save the time out AND flip the field.

Also, not having your first team defense on the field when you have them inside the one in the 4th quarter is ludicrous.

The timeout is less of a deal with the 2 minute warning. Fumbling the ball twice and other turnovers + stupid penalties were a huge factor.

Again this is the coaching stupidity that is endemic with this team.  All three have folks in their ears telling them what's going on.  The inability of Sam's crew to see consequences of plays,  Field position, the clock, personnel groupings and matchups.  Dumber than dirt, coaching generally very stupid players.

The team then reflects them.  3 fumbles. An int, 10 penalties, all kinds of special teams bad, terrible decisions by players.  Trying to recap a qb this bad.  Shit for brains.

Nothing against the kid, but Hasz is always hurt. He got beat up last year and missed half the season. He looks like he's about the collapse every time he runs a 5 yard out.

I'm not sure he's physically cut out for football at this level given the physicality of this conference.

Possibly he's being forced to play way too early due to a lack of talent at the position. Isn't he a 2nd year player? technically a rs-freshman? I'm not saying he's not a "talent" he showed flashes and by that we all mean he caught passes when wide open. I don't know that he's ever really done anything to make me think he's the next best TE. We don't have a great TE talent on the team...that's the hard truth. We have 1 WR that might play in the NFL...big might.

#5 doesn't need to be on the field. As someone else said at least #4 catches shit when it comes his way and does a decent job blocking downfield. #11 is really small. #6 is our 2nd best but Jarius Wright he's not.

Ladies and Gents we simply don't have the horses and damn sure don't have mens up front. If Jackson is beat up badly we're in trouble. Noticed Hill didn't play much either.

Lost in all of this is the fact that our offense scored 3 (!) points after the 4:50 mark in the 1st quarter.

Here's how the rest of our drives faired:

Punt
Fumble
Punt
Punt
Interception
Turnover on downs
Punt
Field goal
Punt
Fumble

Singleton ought to get half of the first team reps all week at least.  Green has had plenty of time to adjust on all of the issues he has.  Gotta turn the page.

Green is a redshirt junior

It's it worth trying to develop him for a maybe, not guaranteed, successful senior year? One year?

I mean, we know what we have at this point.

You're probably right, especially given how good Tennessee is defensively.

It sucks that La Tech isn't this weekend. It would have been nice to have had a make right game where we could have also worked Singleton out.

Yeah I don't think we see Singleton against Tenn at least not as a starter. Maybe they get him some reps if the game is out of hand. It's a home game and we're due for a big game at home...so maybe just maybe these guys come out motivated to not piss down their legs. I get the feeling people don't understand just how thin this roster really is. That we're competitive at all is probably a huge accomplishment.

One thing is for certain if you can't protect the ball either because you fumble, fuck up exchanges on read/options or flat out throw some of the dumbest interceptions ever seen...at some point you have to be held accountable. Turnovers likely cost us this game and the OK Lite game.

Green never looks off his primary read and is super slow to make decisions often times the ball is late getting there even when he's looking right at it and it's open. Armstrong is the only WR that has any kind of rhythm with Green.

It's not all on Green...I suspect other than Armstrong the WRs are hot trash at getting separation. Defenses will begin to focus on Armstrong now more so than ever because he is all we got.

We keep trotting out Broden who hasn't done jack shit. Sategna is looking pretty good to ok and could end up being a solid #2 option but anymore we should really have 4 really decent to good SEC talents at WR. We have maybe 2 and that's a bit of a stretch. Teslaa I think is good in spots if we're going against a zone.

Maybe we should join Bob Holt in his fascination with Monte Harrison. At least he's an older dude that's seem some ball. Dozier and a few others have failed to get on the field despite some of these other fellers playing like poop.

Here's their QB's stat line

C/ATT   YDS   AVG   TD   INT      QBR
11/22   163   7.4   2   0      59.4

Good thing Weigman was out.

And for comparison... their backup outplayed our starter.

C/ATT   YDS   AVG   TD   INT      QBR
23/41   279   6.8   1   1      59.0

I want the fat man gone but I'm also so exhausted at the idea of yet another "rebuild" with a "two year pass" and on and on.

Regardless if Great Value Nutt is fired or not after this year, we will always be rebuilding, the way college sports are these days with portal being as wide as Davis's Mom's and the fact that GVN cannot recruit.

We are not going to be better than 5-7 this year. We are not going to rise up against Tenn, LSU, or Ole Miss at home. After that gauntlet, MSU does not look like to be an easy win as others have said.

It is possible that GVN is kept on another year due to other financial reasons and the excuse of getting players to fit the Bobby's system.

If so, it is just going to get worse.

We cannot keep doing the same things over and over again and expect different result. Until attitudes in the AD and the PTB, and Foundation are changed, we are stuck chasing our tail.

Until all you fuckers start tithing 10% of your earnings (before tax) to ArkansasEdge this is the best we can hope for.  We were obviously outmanned yesterday (and in the other 15 one score games Sam has lost).  It's a miracle we've stayed so close so often.  Praise be to Sam for that.

I started paying a bit more attention to the Armstrong Green connection, and what I've noticed is that Armstrong consistently comes back to the under thrown ball.  The others don't seem to do that nearly as well, which is probably why Green has better "rhythm" with Armstrong.  Armstrong just bails him out.

I too would like to see what Harrison can do... He's a big and older dude, probably has some leadership skills, and seems to have the hands and physical assets.  Give him some work out there and see if he can't do some things for us.

Here is Sam talking about replacing the D-Line that had been playing lights out so that the backups could lose the game.  What an idiot.

"Well, we felt like the fresh guys were going to play better," Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. "I'll have to look at the tape to see exactly how those guys played or if we didn't fit at linebacker, or the safeties didn't fit.
"But in hindsight, I wish we would have stopped them. And we obviously felt like the guys we had in the game were capable of doing it."

This all sounds like a manager/pitching coach pulling a guy in the 7th inning who is pitching a perfect game because that was the plan before the game started.

I've said this before, but Sam has absolutely no feel for the game and consistently makes the wrong decisions.  It's most obvious to us the average fans on fourth downs but there are all kinds of decisions made or not made that get us to being a consistent loser.

It's one thing to mix in one or two guys for a series. To give an entirely new line the whole drive was retarded but it told A&M all they needed to know and they just relaxed and ran right at us with very basic stuff. We were spent. For all the fuck ups in the game and there were many I think that one hurt the most.

It didn't help matters that the offense was doing stupid shit putting the ball on the ground.

The linebackers are consistently terrible in run fits whenever the other team makes adjustments we seem slow to figure it out. Sorey (and Dix Jr) is out and out going for the dude that is going to block him and instead of shedding and getting after the ball carriers ass he just goes thru the motions and gets blocked out of the play. Might as well be any number of other dudes we've had thru years with half his talent that did the exact same thing.

We have proven we can win at least nine games in a year, and be within one score in another 16 losses over four plus years, with an absolute doofus running the show.

A coach who has even an average amount of self-confidence should see that as a job where he can excel.

while some of this true, why continually put him in the one situation that he has trouble with or the o-line puts him in? everyone with a brain cell knew they were going to bring pressure from the right side. there's a body of film that shows it's what you do. d j williams has pointed it out the two games prior and even the announcers brought it up yesterday.

All fair points and true... However, do you think Singleton would do better?  Or is it more advisable to have the more experienced and much larger QB in there to take the hit or hopefully shed a tackler?  Not being a smart ass, Im genuinely asking... Maybe there's something different about Singleton I'm just not aware of.

I'd think the key would have been to run more screens, except when we tried to do that, there always seemed to be a defender in Green's face as soon as they snapped... like the line couldn't shift in time or someone got the block scheme wrong.

blackrock or whatever his name is...he is just too fucking slow to be a tackle against these elite DE's.  He did his best, but was just too fucking slow.  Not sure there is an answer.

I kept waiting for us to run a draw or something right at the DE that seemed to go wide every single play or anything that would take advantage of their overly aggressive play, but everything we tried was either blown up by chance or one of our players would completely whiffffff on a block on what would have been a big play.

I agree that it wasn't Petrinos finest game he's ever called, but how many years have we been dealing with this abysmal oline issue?

I'm not a KJ lover boy like HTL, but he faced the same issues. When a qb is running for his life 4 out of every 5 plays, then everything is busted. There's a reason why it looks like school yard ball, and that's not all by design.

Throw in a penalty, get behind the chains, and start with shit field position, and it's going to result in a shitty looking product.

This right here.  DJ has done a great job of breaking a LOT of this down.  The play calls are largely good... but under throws and defenders living in the backfield are blowing up the Offense.  Now, one could say, if we know this is the issue, call plays that compensate for that.  My question would be... like what?  Screens?  Those got blown up too.  Seriously, I have no idea what to call when your OL can't block grandma.

have no idea about singleton. he seems tiny out there. my issue, fwiw, was with the play calling.

i am starting to have my doubt's about mateo's scheme and the lack of communication on the o-line although that falls on pittman too. and the great value wr coach? after 5 games our receivers still can't make anything close to clean cut on routes or come back for the ball.

we could have really used a bye week this week because the offense to me seems broken.

The WR drifting all over the place is worrisome.  I recall Petrino beating them up til they could run routes with great precision... That doesn't seem to be happening.  Is it Petrino getting more lax?  The WR coach?  Does Petrino have any say?  I would assume he does...

The WR coach is Petrino's guy fwiw but I think he was coming from Missouri State as a QB's coach and is now a first time WR coach if I'm not mistaken. We kept a lot of the guys that sucked last season and magically most of them still suck this season so there's that. Not all on the new WR coach. Sategna has improved greatly, you can tell he's physically matured and has become a decent SEC target. Arguably Armstrong's route running has improved. Both guys are fighting for yardage where as last season they would have caught the ball and fell down immediately. Teslaa is probably about the same perhaps a bit better with the ball in his hands.

DJ Williams does a good job of showing the route running flaws in detail that I've not really seen from one of these Youtube shows and to his credit it's because he knows what the fuck he's talking about where as some of these guys are just stat nerds. All that drifting can make a huge difference just like getting the ball out on time and on target is also huge. A prime example of sloppy route running was a 3rd and about 6 and he hits Sategna on a crossing route who ran about a yard short of the line of gain. You got to find the sticks and turn...that was either a sloppy drift on the route or just lack of detail.

This offense has evolved since the start of the season and not in a good way. We are a long way from guys running wide ass open and Petrino saying I read your god damn book!

I think we are mostly out of the gun and Jackson is legit beat up and may not be much good for a few games if ever again. I have to wonder if the lack of carries to the backs are simply we didn't have anyone to hand it off to. Hill barely played. Russell is a freshman that may not be ready for the entire "package". Dubinion is on a not so double secret suspension. The majority of our run plays are read/options to players that don't know how to deal with the mesh point.

I feel like we should be doing some wildcat type stuff with this setup even thought that's become kind of out of vogue.

I'm not pinning my hopes on Kutus giving us anything if he comes back but maybe we can slide him in at RT...that's where he played last season. Guy has to be better than Blackrock Black Monolith.

Their DL was much more talented and much better prepared than our Oline. That was obvious from the jump. It's too bad we don't have a coach on staff that can recruit and develop offensive lineman.

Routes look like hammered shit after the first break, which is why I believe  they coached Green to get the ball out faster. But then if the primary is covered, thanks to the OLINE there's no time for the progressions.

So it's a cascading effect that starts with the line who can't block for shit. Green then doesn't have time to look any further than his primary and it all goes to shit if he's covered. So that turns into run for your life and wr's coming back to the ball and try to get to an open lane.

That's 95% of our passing game yesterday, and it starts with the Oline. Shitty receivers aren't helping.

Until we learn to pick up blitzers and edge rushers, our qbs will never have time to throw the ball.  We have someone running at the qb untouched almost every play, it seems.

The pressure I'm mostly seeing is not extra men coming after the QB it's just hat on a hat and their hats are running right around our hats. That's a much more difficult problem to account for because it's Truly 11 on 10 at that point. Good offenses neutralize defensive players on the field by forcing them to do something they don't want to do in order to create space. We do very little of that and seldom consistently.

Oh and the one thing I've yet to see Green do very much of it any is stand his ass in the pocket and deliver an accurate ball knowing his ass is gonna probably get blasted. We don't get very many if any rouging the passer calls neither. In this offense you have to have dudes that are willing step into their throws. Also it helps to "throw somebody open"...yeah we aren't doing that.

Just in case you want to feel worse about Taylen Green, there is this. Just some of the worst decision-making in the history of quarterback play.

Oh, and Shemar Turner should be jailed for one of the dirtiest hits I've ever seen on the strip sack fumble play at the end.

I'm about halfway through. DJ does a fantastic job at breaking this stuff down. Petrino's calls are there, Green just isn't reacting fast enough. A good QB would have won us the game yesterday.

Can't believe they put in a 3rd string defensive player during a pivotal point of the game, because the Landon and the backup were too tired. There is no resilennce in these players.

Every one of these by DJ has been awesome.  Petrino is getting people open but we don't have a QB that can make it happen.  And our OL is better than last year but mostly trash again.

Green is maybe just really, really dumb or at least slow thinking.  Dudes were open and he is just very very slow to see them and react, let along anticipate them being open.  Petrino, unless he somehow modifies the playbook to account for this, missed on Green.

I did get the feeling that Tyler Wilson might have also not have been the sharpest tool in the shed and some things were done to account for that  I wonder if similar things can be done for Green.

The biggest thing done for Tyler Wilson was giving him 2+ years in the system before he was needed in a meaningful game.

If Bobby is still here next year I suspect Green would be a lot better.  This offense isn't easy for even a reasonably intelligent QB to pick up quickly.

The audible was always sent in from the sideline when Wilson was QB. He could make his progressions though and I haven't seen that from Green.

Show me one quarterback that calls his own audibles at the college level. That hasn't been a thing for years.

I won't comment on the brains, but his arm strength is not the problem.   When you can throw 60 yards going to the off hand side and falling backwards your arm is plenty strong enough.

Accuracy on the other hand...

It was either Teslaa or Hasz that was open quite a few times, he just didn't get the ball to them. We left a shit ton of yards on the field yesterday. The one where he had the guy wide open on a post route was a TD if he didn't throw it behind him. It makes me feel a little better about Petrino's play calling, but what is he seeing in Green? My wife's grandpa lives around Boise and is a huge Boise State fan. I saw him a few months ago and he was talking about Green and pretty much said exactly what we're all sitting here complaining about. He wasn't necessarily sad to see him transfer out.

I hate to say it... but we ARE seeing the dumbed down version.  If you replay and watch, Green should never go beyond the second read, which is open.  The scheme is actually pretty simple (has to be if even I get it).  Green looks for Armstrong and then scrambles.  Hell, lots of times Armstrong isn't even the primary.  Green is just too slow, he has to wait to see the play develop before throwing the ball.  Sure, sometimes the OL let everyone but grandma get in his face so he can't see a damned thing, but other times (easier to see on replay) he just doesn't even see the route and throw to where the receiver WILL be.  He just scrambles.

Go back and watch some of the Mallet years... Then watch some of the Wilson stuff... and watch today.  This IS the really dumb version.  Bobby has to be beyond flabbergasted.  Of course, at some point Bobby needs to say fuck it and try Singleton (unless he's seeing shit in practice that is preventing it).

A lot of pro QBs can't truly audible anymore either. They might can check from a run to a pass but some have to run the play called even if running into a 9 man front.

All college offenses are less complex than many high schools these days because they don't have consistency across seasons with players.  Its why most teams have shit levels of execution.
