Title: Hogs vs Baylor—-Basketball game thread
Post by: Son of Spam on Nov 09, 2024, 11:01 AM
Football bye week, so here we go. Your #16 Arkansas Razorbacks take on the #8 Baylor Bears in an old SWC matchup. Game is at 6:30 on ESPN. And now:

And to all of the folks who have been talking about great on-ball D: that doesn't mean a damn thing when you are giving up wide open cuts to the basket or a dish for a 3 w/ no one w/ in 7-8 feet.

I'm probably a little more irritated at that game than I should be. The talent is there, we just clearly aren't comfortable as a team yet. Losing to a team that just loss by 40 really sucks, but I guess I can't expect anything less from Arkansas.

I do think we get it together, though. Big Z and Brazile were disappointments. Combine their stats and it's still not a double double.

Poor shooting is the easiest fix in basketball. This team will get better shooting the basketball. Davis is not 100%. He fell in the 2nd half and immediately grabbed his wrist. It's still bothering him quite a bit.

We lost a neutral site game to a top 15:team by 5pts on a night we played poorly. Give me that over playing great and losing by 5. This team will be much better in February than they are right now.

Our fans outnumbered theirs substantially, we were definitely louder.

Not having our band and cheerleaders when they had theirs sucked, definitely impacted our crowd's input in the game.

We couldn't hit shit from 3, that was the difference in the game.  Davis is a better 3 point shooter than this, he needs to come alive.

Thiero was our best player vs TCU and again tonight, he never takes a second off.

Brazile and Z got pushed around and Aidoo clearly isn't healthy yet, we really need him.

We have 5 new starters and only on returning player, I didn't expect things to flow yet.  I just hope they do at some point.

I just watched the game. Not surprising, but he was in postseason annoyance form.

Here's a sampling:

Scott Drew's game plan is to win this game.

Arkansas needs to be confident in the muddy parts of the game.

Arkansas hasn't allowed 70 points "all season."

You gotta be comfortable with mud in your blood.

That was almost stripped and ripped to the other end.

The corner was naked.

This game feels good right now.

Winners win. Competitors compete.

As for the game, it was like a late March battle of wills, just without the cohesiveness or polish. We had too many lapses on defense and just got too far behind early. We spent our energy tying it early in the second and they were well-coached as usual.

I'm encouraged.

They need something to get some engagement, but it still a massive overreaction. We looked way better in the second half, and we still don't have Davis or Aidoo healthy. That's literally all we're missing. Hitting the panic button now is ridiculous.

20 3pt attempts per game ranks 282 in the country theough 2 games. Utah is first at 44 attempts per game.

KY led the country in 3pt% last year. They went cold and lost the first game. I'd rather have a team than can make 3's at a decent clip, can get to the rin, and can defend their ass off. You better be able to defend when you get to the tourney. Go look up Cal's history when he has a top 30 decense.

Cal got pissed at Z a couple of times and yanked his ass. He seems to get lost on defensive switches sometimes.

Z is gonna struggle with physical bigs. Aidoo will be be more physical. We defended the PnR much better last night. I don't recall us getting beat once on it.

It is a work in progress.

The national guys have gotta say something, there is not a lot happening and cal is a headline guy.

I would like to see boogie stop shooting so much (like cal said after the forest game - it is not like his barely missing) it is like watching devo jack shots. Of course, cal also has the ability to do something about it.

Let's see what happens in sec play.

I'd we want to over react then Bama is in trouble for barely beating a-state

Quote from: Barton Fink on Nov 10, 2024, 11:42 AM20 3pt attempts per game ranks 282 in the country theough 2 games.

Attemptimg threes and hitting threes are two different things. I don't care if you shoot 100 of them as long as you are hitting them. And like I said last night, we seem to be weak under the basket. The last two games, opposing players have been left wide open underneath. And I am not sold on Z yet. But, it is early.

My point was that we are not living and dying by the 3. We shoot very few conpared to most teams. This team can shoot 35% from 3.

Mt point was that most of Cal's teams at KY lived and died from the three point line. Most times, they made the tourney and lost early because they went cold from there. I just hope we can do something besides shoot threes from way above the arc. I think we can,and like I said, it is early. And I didn't watch the second half last night but early in the game, it seemed we dribbled around the arc and ended up throwing up a brick three.

Baylor played a zone. We moved the ball well against the zone and got good looks. Just didn't knock them down. We also drove against the zone several times to get shots inside.

Cal's team last year shot a lot of 3s because they shot it well. They led the country in 3pt%. His really good teams did not shoot a ton of 3s but defended really well. This team is built more like those teams.

Yeah, play defense and rebound/takeaways leading to quick transition points will be critical for this team. We saw that in spurts last night, they just need to all fully buy in.

Davis shooting percentage should improve once healed. But can someone point to any examples of team percentage increasing dramatically? Wagner shot 29% from 3 last year. Fland is not a shooter.

Find examples? They've played two games.

Plus exhibitions were like 25%. Wagner is not a shooter. Fland is not a shooter. Besides Davis, where is this hope that we're going to be able to shoot?

As posted above, I'm not putting my hope in that.

Fland can be a +35% 3pt shooter. In the 2 practices I attended he probably shot 80% from 3. He's a freshman getting used to the college game. Brazile shot around 37% from 3 if I remember correctly. This team does not have to hit 15 3's a game at 40% to win. They just need to get to around 7 - 8 makes at ~35%.

Knox is another freshman that has the shot to help. It will take him a little time.

Right now, this team just needs a game where they shoot it well to gain confidence. The mental part of shooting is more important than people realize.

I guess not. I do have eligibility left if we need a shooter.

Every single Calipari press conference on YouTube is full of miserable Kentucky fans.

The jaded ex girlfriend that can't leave well enough alone is an understatement.

Well have fun with Coach Cope with zero tournament wins.

Reddit, Twitter, Instagram. All are bombarded with Kentucky fans. I'm not sure I've ever seen a fanbase obsess over someone they wanted gone so badly. I know he doesn't pay attention to social media but I do have a feeling he'll want to beat Kentucky by 100 when we play them.

Not unlike Petrino leaving Atlanta. The media roasted not only Bobby, but Arkansas for hiring him. Calipari is no different.

To be fair, Arkansas fans were like that with Nutt and Ole Miss.

To be fair, one is a HOF coach that won a NC at the former school along with multiple FF appearances, and the other is an asshat.

You can put all the caveats you want. I'm just saying, Arkansas fans were obsessed over Nutt when he was dismissed and went to Ole Miss.

True, but there were factors beyond the on court record in play with Nutt that aren't with Cal and Kentucky.

And Cal has handled any questions about his previous job with class.  Nutt and his entourage flipped off fans and spit on our field.  One coach left with grace.  The other did everything he could to poke his previous employer in the eye.

If Cal shows his ass when we go to Rupp in February it will be a valid comparison.
