Title: Tyson vs Paul
Post by: Carpe DeHam on Nov 13, 2024, 07:09 AM
I'd be fine with Tyson beating the shit out of Paul Friday night.

He won't.

The problem with Tyson is we all still remember him from his heyday.  He obviously isn't beating a young top heavyweight but my God he still looks and moves great.  He may still be Iron Mike and he might just kill Paul.

The real question is if this fight is a real fight.

That's my gut feeling too.  The guy looks incredible and old man strength is a real thing.  Plus, I do believe this is all for show.

Post by: BASS on Nov 13, 2024, 10:03 AM
I bet Tyson at his age can still throw a helluva punch. No way Paul had ever been hit that hard. This is Peter McNeely all over again.

But I bet Tyson will play the strategic game of giving people their money's worth and take it easy for a while.

I went to a UFC event in Dallas two years ago, Tyson was there and he was using a cane to get around. Jake Paul isn't a legit pro boxer but he's not a complete bum either. He's good enough to not get hit clean by a 60 year old. Tyson probably has about 60 seconds of gas. Paul by round 4 knockout.

I know nothing of Paul but if he is a legit heavy weight then Tyson may get his geriatric ass whooped.

Tyson should hit him this hard:
1970's: Denver RB Floyd Little: "Dick Butkus hit me so hard my body almost liquified. He helps me up and says 'You Ok?' I said, 'Yeah of course.' He says, 'Well if you're ok, why are you in our huddle?' He'd hit me so hard I'd followed him into the Bears huddle. He turned me around and sent me back"
Title: Re: Tyson vs Paul
Post by: buff2.0 on Nov 13, 2024, 06:13 PM
Paul is a "good" boxer but I've never seen him be a good fighter.  If this was a legit fight, Tyson would just barge in like the "natural born killer" he is and Paul isn't a good enough fighter to weather that storm.

But... it's Paul so it's not legit. It's a money grab, and my only hope is that Tyson is the one to finally shove the knife into Jake's back and fuck the wound.  I want the last words Jake Paul hears that night to be "Give me my money, bitch."

not related to this but I saw something on the internet about Tyson being pissed off when Larry Holmes beat up old Ali like he did so he vowed to beat the shit out of him when he got the chance and made sure Ali was there to watch

That was obviously way closer to prime Tyson.

I was thinking the same thing. Tyson better get him early. He may still be Iron Mike, but Father Time is undefeated.
If this is all for show, Mike could still

I think we all relish in the thought of Mike sending Paul to la-la land.
I'm concerned about the 14 ounce gloves and the 2-minute rounds/8 round max.

I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't scripted out to go the distance and end in a draw or a Paul decision (simply because of all the current Vegas action on Tyson, makes me skeptical that the sportsbooks would be this vulnerable to essentially an exhibition).

Good point and that's been 20 years ago. Likely wishful thinking on my part due to the nostalgia of watching him fight while growing up.

That era was great for boxing and encouraged me to join a local gym. Tuesday night fights on USA and boxing after dark on HBO. Good shit.

I was a huge fan of Tyson's in the 80's.  I'm old now, old people go to bed early. They want us old fans to be able to watch it.  With that being said I'm usually up until 10-10:30ish.

The lisp mostly, rape case was bogus (they actual reference in law classes today), but more than anything his dominance of the sport.

If we limit our entertainment to entertainers with moral character, we'll have no movies/shows to watch and no sports teams to root for.

Unpopular opinion, Tyson was a physical specimen in his prime but he was a can crusher who doesn't have one quality win on his resume. Tyson isn't even a top 10 heavyweight of all time.

1. Ali
2. Joe Louis

6. Marciano
7. Holyfield
8. Liston
9. Joe Frazier
10. Jack Dempsey

I'd put Tyson 12 or 13.

All of those fighters would have been can crushers if they could have. Tyson was trained by Cus D'Amato. He knew how to box. The amount of different combinations he could throw was incredible. He was a machine until Don King fucked him up.

I won't go 10 or include people I didn't see.

1. Tyson/Ali I just watched a video with them on Arsenio where they each picked each other as the best. Good enough.

2 George Foreman
3 Evander Holyfield
4 Joe Frazier
5 Lewis

I guess the fact that Holyfield and Lewis beat Tyson's ass doesn't matter. I didn't mean to imply that Tyson couldn't box because he could. But the fact is his resume is not good and when he fought legendary heavyweights he lost and none of the fights were even close.

Actually the fight brought more eyeballs to boxing than have been generated in total in the last 20 years combined.  And other than the headliner, the card presented some great bouts.  The Taylor Serrano fight was historic for setting up women's boxing; what a great fight.  It's too bad Netflix had idiots for announcers as they implied that the decision was wrong and that Texas boxing is corrupt.giving the cornerman a wide berth to yammer about head butting stink.  They also missed a huge story in not covering the curtains.

Trigger called it- Tyson was out of breath by Round 3. I was trying to find a round by round breakdown, but I think he threw three punches in Round 4. He landed 18 across eight rounds.

Enjoy the cash Mike. Thanks for the memories.

Not sure what you mean by "rigged" because I don't think it takes much pre planning or interference for one fighter to keep his distance trying to make it 8 rounds, and the other simply lets him while scoring a few points. That's definitely what happened, but I don't know that it needed to be pre-planned.

Watching Tyson use his legs in his training videos and then seeing how he moved last night, something is not right.

Tyson didn't even try fighting last night.  He never looked like he did in his training videos.

He clearly stood in the ring for 8 rounds.

Tyson didn't even try fighting last night.  He never looked like he did in his training videos.

He clearly stood in the ring for 8 rounds.

Maybe he overtrained and was tired.  Maybe the scale of the event got him.  He couldn't lose.  He's 58.  On the other hand Paul can't win.  A loss would be disastrous.  A win against a 58 year old is meaningless.  It was a disappointing bout in a really good night on the undercard.

Can it be a catalyst for a revival of boxing and big events like this?  My wife didn't really want to watch and then said in the undercard, "I forgot how much I love boxing!"  She lost her shit in the Taylor-Serrano fight.  She knows the game as her long ago first husband was a boxer and she'd train with him.

Looked like his knee was bothering him.  He had a bit of a limp that I noticed as he was walking back to his corner between one of the rounds.

He got paid. That is all he wanted. He did what he had to do to get paid. And he wanted to have his brain working good enough to KNOW he got paid.

I can't feel sorry for Tyson. 20 million is a lot of money.

This probably puts the lid on these types of fights. Doubt you'll get anyone else to bite on it. Tyson is as big as it gets.
