For those who have had it (or hip I guess), how did you know it is time? I am "a definite candidate" in that I am bone on bone and I hobble around some. I can't run or participate in sports like I used to.

On the other hand, I walk pretty much all I want to, do vacations and walk around cities. The knee supports me even though it hurts and "feels weird". I don't use a cane or walker and could probably walk a couple of miles (with difficulty at the end). But I walk all I want to.

I have one scheduled for December but I just don't know if I need to yet. 60 y/o

I didn't mean to post in the sports board. Can a mod move to Crapola.

At 60, you probably need it. I had hip replacement, but it was due to treatment for inflammatory arthritis after cancer treatment. It killed the circulation in my left hip and the bone died. Maybe get it scoped, but the sooner the better. If you are bone on bone, then I would say you need it.
Well, shit...

When I was in manufacturing (about 15 years ago or so), we had a guy in his late 60's who had both done at the same time.  He was a retired beat cop, and was working 50-55 hrs a week standing on those hard concrete floors running a machine.  Pretty much same as you, bone on bone in both knees - he could handle it while working, but he was pretty much wrecked at night.  He was a tough old bastard.  Raised horses when he wasn't working at the plant.  One of those guys that had to be busy all the time.

He was back to work in 6 weeks - no restrictions.  Started PT within a day or two of the surgery.  Said it was the best thing he'd done in a while.  Sure there was a little pain, but he told me it was nothing like what he was going thru before the surgery.

Best to get it done early. My dad finally got his knees done in 21 and 22. We tried to get him to get them looked at years before, but kept putting it off. Finally one knee went out from under him just walking. Doctor didn't even hesitate, just said we can schedule it soon. No, we can wait or you still have time bs.

After surgery and PT, my dad was a lot better. The PT is important, don't disregard it.

I'm having some issues with my left knee when I do lunges or over exert in gym. Wearing a compression thing for my knee now but hope it doesn't get worse
Yep. I'm not trying to be a dick about it. It could have lived. It didn't. Not by my choice. -Elvis

Do you take collagen peptides? I put two scoops of the hydrolyzed powder every morning in my coffee. I don't squeak as much going up and down the stairs.

Collagen is good for you and have been told that is why asain people look younger and don't have as many joint issues as we do by eating foods with collagen in them.

I am not saying it is a miracle drug or anything, but my knees feel better than they used to. I have some beginnings of arthritis and other things since reaching middle age, so it is not a cure all.

I do ski and I don't feel the need of wearing a knee brace or compression sleeve.

It just couldn't hurt to take some and see.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) knee injections are the new hotness.  I know a few guys who have done it and they apparently have had great success.  Downside is it is considered experimental and not covered by insurance.  I'm strongly considering giving it a shot.

I know women doing this in their under eye area. pRP and PRF is big for under eye treatment but the friend I know said it hurt like a mother fucker and sweated through her clothes hopefully in the knee is better.

I'm just putting a compression sleeve on for now maybe I'll dip into collagen peptide and see what that does to me

SOS, can you tell me more about your situation. My wife had cancer treatments last year, finishing up end of September. She began to have hip/right leg issues in November. It acted like sciatica issues but MRIs did not support her symptoms for it. She's had several MRIs and tests with no resolution. Doctors here say it's a result of the cancer treatments but MD Anderson say it's highly unlikely. We're still scrambling to find answers. Her symptoms sound a lot like yours. She's currently using a cane and struggling with it.

I think the BCG and chemo treatments triggered some kind of reaction and I had inflammatory arthritis in every joint except my left index finger. Worst pain I have ever felt. Felt like every bone in each foot was dislocated, my knees were swollen, my right arm was frozen at an angle, ect. They treated that with high doses of steroids and methatrexate. When the arthritis finally cleared up, I began having trouble with my hip. Saw an ortho doctor, did some tests, and they found the bone had died, probably due to the high steroid dosage. Tried something (can't remember what it was) first and that didn't work. Did the replacement, and have had no problems at all. I have to be careful with any steroids now because of the problem I had. But, like I said, I was taking huge amounts of them. Also, my wife and I read that chemo treatments can sometimes cause a reaction, triggering other things.

Mother goose had her hip replacement surgery this morning and she is now wishing she had done it sooner (we tried to tell her) as she can already feel the difference. She thought it was a knee issue until she saw a the doc 2 weeks ago (finally!)who showed her it was the hip. Really nice to not see her in pain.

Go for it!  It is not going to get better on its own and why put up with the pain?

Every one in my family (3) who have undergone total knee replacement over the last 25 years all were very happy with the results.  The rehab is a lot of work but it would definitely be the way to go in my opinion.  Hope it works out well for you if you decide to pursue!
