At least four tornadoes were reported in Washington County amid heavy rain and severe thunderstorms that left some destruction in their wake Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Tulsa.

Nearly 24,000 customers in Washington County and about 7,200 in Madison County were without power as of 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to the website poweroutage.us.

The weather service reported a tornado just east of Fayetteville on its Facebook page at 7:44 p.m. Monday. It stated the tornado was moving east-northeast into areas north of Elkins and south of Goshen.

"If you are in the path of this life-threatening storm, please seek shelter underground or in an interior room ASAP," the post states.

Stephen Mauk, spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department, said Monday night the city was dealing with flooding in certain areas, as well as downed power lines on the south end of town. The city also sustained a couple of lightning strikes that started a fire at an apartment complex.

Mauk said the city was still assessing the storm damage. However, no injuries or major structural damages to residences had been reported as of Monday night.

The first confirmed tornado in Washington County was located along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border southwest of Lincoln, according to a 7:18 p.m. post on the weather service in Tulsa's Facebook page. The tornado was moving east-northeast toward Lincoln and Prairie Grove.

A separate post at 7:26 p.m. Monday confirmed another tornado near Lincoln and Prairie Grove moving east toward the southern Fayetteville/Greenland area. The weather service reported a third tornado near Prairie Grove moving east toward Greenland at 7:33 p.m., along with an additional circulation near Greenland moving northeast.

In Lincoln, Mayor Doug Hutchens said Monday night at least one home on Mitchell Street in Lincoln was severely damaged with trees down, he said; the roof is gone and the upstairs area is damaged. Power lines were down as well in the city, he said.

"We had a touchdown here in Lincoln," Hutchens said.

He said he'd heard one of the old farmhouses was damaged near the high school and a poultry house was damaged but he had not seen any of that yet.

Tyler Franks, Lincoln's assistant fire chief, said there were no reports of injuries but several trees, power lines, power poles and homes were damaged, along with the Head Start building south of town -- mainly around South Mitchell Avenue, then behind the high school and along Arkansas 62 and Arkansas 45.

"Several roofs ripped off houses, definitely a tornado," Franks said via text.

Washington County personnel were showing up in town Monday evening, as were power companies, Hutchens said.

The Prairie Grove City Council suspended its meeting at 7:10 p.m. Monday when Capt. Jeff O'Brien, who was tracking the weather, reported a possible tornado in the Lincoln area that would be headed toward Prairie Grove. The meeting will resume at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

County Judge Patrick Deakins said Monday Washington County had a lot of trees and power lines down. Major trees fell in the Cane Hill area, specifically Mockingbird Road.

"We have some of our heavier equipment dispatched to that area now because it's going to take some heavy equipment to move those trees, but other than that, we have our crews just spread out throughout the county trying to get roads opened back up," he said.

Structural damage has also been reported in the Greenland and Lincoln areas, according to Deakins. No injuries had been reported as of 9:30 p.m. Monday.

RIVER VALLEY HIT, TOO

In Sebastian County, the weather service reported a confirmed tornado south of Barling moving east-northeast toward Central City and Lavaca.

Flooding was reported in downtown Fort Smith as the rain continued through the evening.

The storm also brought reports of flooding and closed roads in Crawford County. Posts by residents on the county's Department of Emergency Management Facebook page starting around 8:30 p.m. reported flooding in Van Buren on Kingswood Drive and Canterbury Drive, Vista Hills Boulevard, 28th Street and Kibler Road and Pointer Trail. Portions of Dean Springs Road in Alma reportedly had water running across it.

Power outages were reported across the River Valley, with 1,010 customers without power in Sebastian County as of 9:08 p.m., according to poweroutage.us. Crawford County was reporting 146 outages, Franklin County had 1,162 and Johnson County had 323.
