Yesterday answered the question about whether it is just about Jimmies and Joes.  TN didn't beat us just because of talent.  We matched up with them pretty well.  We got outcoached and out-executed, which is another extension of coaching.

Eh, we have a talent issue. Especially  on offense. We may have 2 guys that could start for half the teams in the SEC. TN played a green QB who wasn't very good. We had 2 good drives all game. TN played down to us.

We have looked competitive in 1 quarter out of 12 in SEC games. Coaching may be the bigger issue but both exist.

The Whyte Boar

We have a talent issue but we will always be of equal or lesser talent in our league.  A coach who can't win with equal talent and snatch games from teams with better talent will never win here.

Then we'll be lucky to be mediocre.

Mediocre would be a HUGE step up right now.  If we were mediocre right now, we wouldn't be so disillusioned with how things are going.

We continue to act like poors that can't raise money, can't hire anyone (because we are a basketball school) and literally Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Missouri have no issues being competitive in football in arguably similar recruiting situations, likely similar NIL potential. The fish stinks from the head down and it's plain as day. *and I'm not just talking about the AD

Let's look at our coaches in the SEC.

Crowe - 'nuff said
Ford - mediocre at his best. couldn't beat SMU
Nutt - great in 98. then sucked. then did less with more.
Petrino - winner. had to have his agent beg for an interview twice. we wanted jim grobe.
Johnelle - stupid. we should've looked for a coach then when we had momentum.
Bert - wanted to play Big10 football at arkansas. drunk and cried a lot
Morris - antichrist
Pittman - only person dumb enough to take the job. figurehead
Silverfield - a statue

Forgive me if I don't think hiring the right guy is gonna happen. For us it is literally like catching lightning in a bottle.

However, for the first time in our history in the SEC there is a real way to get better talent. Yet we have an AD that thinks it's gonna blow over. All while schools like OM and TT are overcoming historic talent disadvantages to become playoff contenders.

If things stay as they are, and we're looking for a for coach that can win AT LEAST 5-6 games every year (floor) with bottom of the league NIL, good luck with that. I don't see it happening. Someone (AD, etc.) has to change the course and find a way to give the coach a fighting chance.

Ford did lose to SMU a lot but he also got us competitive in the SEC, including winning the West in '95. Beat Alabama twice on the road, and they weren't on probation yet. Also recruited all the talent Nutt won with his first two years except for Cedric Cobbs.

Barton Fink

He won more than 5 games once out of 5 years.  He likely would have won in '98 like Nutt did but he laid an egg in '97.

You're right. Well technically he won 6 his first year but one was a Bama forfeit. So 5 on the field twice in five years. I'll still never understand what he saw in Pete Burks.

If you hire bad coaches, you get bad results.

Mediocre coaches, mediocre results.

Every name on that list bears that out.

It's fair to assume that we won't hire anyone any better next time, but all your list proves is that we've made poor hires.

Perish peacefully in a warm environment.

Don't even mention the two 'Sippi schools. The situation here is unacceptable.

I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned this-- wasn't the spread 13 1/2?  Maybe Silverfield just wanted to make sure we covered. (I kid, I kid]

Correct. Firing/hiring coaches alone probably isn't gonna make much of a difference in the state we're in. Unless we get lucky.

Coaching matters, but talent moves the needle far more often. You could give RS Georgia's roster and win 9 games. Give our talent to Kirby, etc. and he would be lucky to get 6 wins. Flip coaches in the UGA a couple weeks agao and we still get our ass handed to us. I know we will never have UGA talent. My point is worst coach + best talent vs best coach with worst talent and the best talent will win out.

The SEC landscape has also changed. Prior to aTm and Mizz coming in we were far more competitive. Since their inception, that has been 2 more losses every year on our schedule. We lost USC as a common opponent because of it. Now we've added 2 more programs that are much better than us in TX and OU, and we've added an extra SEC game to the schedule. Winning in this conference today is harder than it has ever been for Arkansas.

Again, I hated the RS hire. HY has failed adapting to the new landscape in college athletics. Get rid of them both if we want, but there's a very good chance we are staring in the same mirror in a year or two.

I didn't know the spread but wondered about this. I don't think he's shaving but with our luck he used it as a measuring stick.

The Whyte Boar

That punt was so bad.  I mean if everything had worked perfectly we get the ball back with less than a minute and a half at least 80 yards away with no timeouts.  Have to pass the ball on every down and can't throw to the middle.  Just ridiculous.

But if we convert we have all our timeouts and pretty much have the entire playbook open.  With our offense it's slim pickings either way but the choice is clear.

It is one of those decisions that only gets worse the more you look at it.
