It's not a bad take.  Focus on the person responsible.  Don't make a rule change that will affect dozens of games a year for years to come because you have one or two guys abusing a rule.  It's really that simple.

You're failing to understand the burden of proof.  Once decided, it's the coaches burden to prove that IT WASN'T intentional. 

The burden of proof is always on the accuser. Just as if you were arrested. THEY have to prove you did it.

Who says that?  We're talking about rules for a sporting league, not a court.  Besides, they would "prove" you did it when they make the determination that the injury is fake.

After the determination has already been made.  That's your due process and your chance to prove that it wasn't fake.

Yeah that's a problem too. Let's say your QB hurts his thumb on a helmet during the 2 minute drive when you're down by 6.  He needs to take a play off to tape it.

All of a sudden your backup QB has to conduct the entire game winning drive? Wtf?

There are 3 possibilities. (1) Remains the most likely. (3) seems like zero percent chance to me. Maybe we can jigger (2) so that it works both to stop fake injuries and get key players back in the game.

(1) Status quo right now
(2) Some kind of mandatory longer sit-out for the injured player
(3) Determination (either in real time or after the game) of what injuries are fake or real

Thumb injury likely doesn't require a game stoppage.  I suspect he could get himself off the field by himself. 

I would make a player sit out for the rest of the series for any injury that requires a game stoppage.  The point is to keep injured players from coming back to play too quickly as well as the anticompetitive behavior of team's stealing extra timeouts by faking injuries.  They always seem to stay down just long enough for TV to get bored and go to commercial thus extending the delay to 3+ minutes.

Hadn't considered it before but this is likely a (the?) reason nobody seems to be in a hurry to stop this behavior. These official TO's add up to a lot of additional advertising income.

That's part of it.

I think also, the committee (whoever the deciders are) thinks that living with fake injuries, is better than seeing stars sit out longer than they need to for real injuries.

I haven't even read too much of this but would it not be reasonable to give the coach the option to either burn a timeout, take some sort of penalty, or agree to have said player take off 2-3 snaps if injured?

It seems like it would take some serious strategy/risk to insert an inadequate player to take the fall in most scenarios.

I agree, if they have to stop the game the player is out the remainder of the possession.

The root causes of all of this is the hurry up offenses that have arguably created an unfair advantage. Teams exploited the rules at the time and no longer "manage the clock" by chewing up clock unless you are Bertius Maxiumus. The game is geared toward explosive offenses because nobody wants to watch defensive struggles. 

So some of the issue could be resolved by allowing an easier opportunity for defenses to sub in packages without having to wait on the offense to sub in a player. I realize the opposite would happen if you allowed the defense to willy nilly sub players in...they'd do it between every play. So there has to be some kind of way to do it...maybe on 3rd and 4th downs the defense is allowed to make defensive adjustments and will be given a 10 second grace before signal for play readiness where the zebra stands over the football with the play clock running down.


The play clock I believe was shortened down to 25 seconds in the last few years wasn't it?
