Just heard Shane Beamer with a fresh take on the playoffs and bowls.  Didn't know there were any more of those.

If you lose in the first round of the playoffs, you don't get a bowl trip.  With all the swag. Seeing Sea World.  Or Disney.  Local eats. Key to the City.  All that shit.  Seeing the Pyramid Bass Pro Shop (he didn't say this one but I know it's a top Memphis attraction).  The four teams who stay at home in South Bend, Happy Valley, Austin, and Columbus, if they lose, they get no trip at all.  The 4 visitors get work trips, not bowl trips, to.... South Bend, Happy Valley, Austin, and Columbus.  The only one of those you'd voluntarily choose to visit in December is Austin.

Interesting point.  Of course, bowl keeeds opt out at an infinitely higher rate than playoff keeeds, so maybe a lot of them don't care about any of that stuff.

Army/Navy...on my bucket list to see in person. I always wanted to see the Ohio State band and finally got to see them in the Sugar Bowl (a shitty loss for us). But the Army/Navy game would be awesome to see in person

I've told this story on here before, but the wife pinned on 03 or 04 (don't remember which) back in the day on the USS Missouri where the brass plaque is, which is the very spot the Japanese foreign minister signed the surrender treaty.

During the ceremony my father in law (100% Japanese by blood) had tears streaming down his cheeks. I thought it was because he was proud of his daughter, or maybe getting emotional remembering that his family was put in camps on Kauai during the war, but that was only part of it.
 
I found out after the ceremony that his uncle, my wife's great uncle, was a pilot in the Japanese Navy and flew the mission over Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th...quite possibly over the very spot we were standing in that moment.

Now his daughter was pinning on an Officer rank in the United States Air Force at that spot. The emotions of it all had just overcome him during the moment.
