Siverfield was the biggest name that would take the job. At best, he was the third choice.

It was Lashlee, Golesh, Silverfield, in that order.

Silverfield has beaten them both.  Not a ton of difference in all three. 

All three are better than the hires going back to Bielema, who was a proven head coach.

If he bounces next year it is a million wasted on a guy who didn't play (I find that odd to pay a guy who you don't want to play in the nil era).

He has the tools, he showed it last year, someone will offer him a big bag for next season and I bet he is starting somewhere next year (I do hope it is here).

The point of my post was not to over expect this year.  That certainly includes next week on the road as a 7.5 point underdog.  He needs to win the games he's expected to win, unlike the previous coaches before him.  That would be what to look for, and if he pulls off a win or two extra that's really great.

Nobody should be expecting to win at Utah.  I would love it, but not expecting at all.

Now, reality will likely set in the following week. But beating Utah and being 3-1 going into October or 2-2 with a one-score loss to the Utes in a game where we looked like we belonged would make me feel a lot better about the trajectory of his tenure than a noncompetitive loss.

I've always heard the explanation that they are fit into pilots' existing training time.   They would be flying those planes (and burning the jet fuel) anyway, so why not build a little goodwill for the military by sending them over a venue?

Not to the school but to the tax payers.  Just consider how many flyovers are happening around the country on any given Saturday.

That's what I was addressing. I realize they don't charge the schools/teams for it (although it wouldn't surprise me too much if Yurachek was footing the bill - I'm sure they can spot a sucker from miles away).  If they are flying the same hours and distance for a training flight there is no additional expense to it whether the flight is over a stadium or some cornfields in Iowa. 

I'm not stating any of this as fact by the way.   Just what I've heard and/or read from people who have been involved with military aviation and with civilian FBOs where the jets refuel from time to time.  I do know the pilots are required to get a certain number of hours to stay current.   

The guard (Army for helicopters and Air NG for jets) usually flies on weekends anyway.

Not to mention it's a huge safety issue, needlessly putting thousands of spectators at risk if one of those planes were to go down in a packed stadium.  They had a close call in S Africa just yesterday.

Yeah that was dumb.  There is a reason air shows happen where they do, and the maneuvers generally happen away from the crowds watching them.
