Quote from: The Whyte Boar on Oct 06, 2026, 09:36 AMWe are still (I believe) Top 20 in NIL spending.  Are we a Top 20 team?  That would be a typical plucky Arkansas team in a tough league.  We are literally the worst team in the country.

I personally don't think NIL has really changed Arkansas' place in the pecking order all that much except to open up the top if we spend.  But spending wise and recruiting rankings wise we are pretty much where we always are/were in that 20 to 30 range.  We just aren't getting those type results.  In the SEC that would be good enough for 6-8 wins in most years.  We either drastically overpaid for what we have or what we have is drastically under coached .

I don't think it really changed the pecking order but it was an opportunity for us to overcome disadvantages. We didn't take advantage of it. UT and OU coming in only compounded the issue.

I never look at recruiting from a top 20 perspective but rather where we sit in the SEC. That is who we play 9 out of 12 games. Are we as talented as the teams we play the most.

Quote from: SOM on Oct 06, 2026, 09:52 AMThe problem is that they took 25m and couldn't compete with Utah State. How many other teams with a smaller budget would blow the doors off this team?

Utah did hire a coach that has been on staff for 20+ years and knew the players and the system that they ran. That has to account for something. Much like I think KJ. etc. would look better if BP was retained.

Getting rid of arguably the best developer of QBs in favor of whatever the hell we have now was definitely a choice.

They did a great job with education in New Orleans. I want them nowhere near the Buffalo River. Their pet education project in Arkansas has us headed for fiscal hell. We'll see on the rest.

egregious

Only 1 Tennessee player was alive the last time they won in Arkansas.

Obviously they don't play here much.

The model isn't sustainable with current economics and contracts.

It will fail many teams that are chasing it and maybe Arkansas isn't giving into the financial fail.

The money isn't there. The staff aren't there. The players aren't there. Only thing Arkansas has is the facilities.

Until NIL is corrected Arkansas will not compete in the SEC.

My opinion and worth what I would give to the Razorbacks...nothing.

Barton Fink

100% agree, but I also didn't think it would escalate to $50M rosters in a couple years. It's  not sustainable

This. I think a lot of teams are trying to buy relevance by spending a lot now, knowing that it's not sustainable over the long haul.

So let's discuss the next problem.  We go back to everyone is paid the same.  Salary caps, whatever.

Now you are back to recruiting based on reputation and best chance to win.

We have destroyed our name over the last decade and will continue to get the bottom recruits in the SEC.

Whatever happens, HY MUST go.  There is just no scenario where he can fucking be allowed to stay.

nil won't get 'corrected'. the bill in congress does pretty much nothing about it except disclosure of any deal over $600 and then they get sent to the college sports commision for determination. that's already happening and is pretty much a nothing burger.

what it does do is allow, in addition to the current $21.5 million in revenue sharing (which goes up 4% ever year until it ends in 2038), a $49 million total with roughly $27.5 million for retention of players who have been at their school for at least one academic year. it also carves out of that total a mandatory $5 million minimum for women's and olympic sports.

Boarat

NIL will be self-correcting. Academic and athletics bubble will pop spectacularly.

Precisely. Money gave us a chance to overcome our recent history and talent disadvantages. Take that away and it goes back to coaches and school history. Which, if we aren't going to aggressively invest in NIL, may be the better option for us IF we hire the right coach.

BASS

While we're taking about change, can we get the state legislature to get off it's ass and change state laws that are hindering our athletics program?

Like removing salary limitations so that the university can pay the damn coaches contracts directly?

Then we can get rid of the razorback foundation, and just have one money pot we are asking fans to give to.

Quote from: animal on Oct 05, 2026, 05:11 PMSounds reasonable except isn't NIL supposed to be a voluntary thing? I want to say when I went to college there was some kind of "athletic" booster type thing in the tuition but back then it was peanuts.

Tennessee charges a 10% talent fee on all football and basketball tickets to help with NIL. That's not voluntary.

vegashog

only arkansas, bama, lsu, and vandy (although they don't have to disclose whether they do or not) have no student fees going to the athletic department.

48% of power 4 schools currently do it but that is expected to increase.
