Ty Clary looked like he couldn't wait to get to the church recital when he first came and by the end it was all house of pain...but it didn't really help his game any.

This is where you miss A Ricky Stromberg.

Quote from: HughJasole on Sep 19, 2023, 02:42 PMAnd Jeff Long lucked into Petrino by the fact his Falcons team cratered once Mike Vick went to prison. Otherwise we would've hired Jim Grobe and would've really been in the gutter fast.

You're timing is off. We got turned down by Grobe. After getting turned down by Bowden. Petrino was the next day. It was either a Sunday or a Monday night. Got a text in line at Best Buy in WLR: "Grobe won't even fucking come". Next day waiting for Boards wake-up cram sesh at 5:00 p.m. Jay Harris wakeup call on Sportscenter..."BREAKING: BOBBY PETRINO TO ARKANSAS"

I came thrice.

It's been said that Petrino's people were reaching out to Arkansas all along but doofus Jeff Long kept ignoring it until others turned down the gig. You are correct that Tommy Bowden and Jim Grobe were on the wish list at least as far as I know from what's been talked about thru the years.

Has Tommy Bowden sniffed a head coaching job since being fired by Clemson....nope but that probably was of his choosing. Have to think his playing hanky with Arkansas in 2007 may have led to his firing mid-season in 2008.

Have no idea what any of that means but I agree about Stromberg.

Quote from: BleedinRed on Sep 19, 2023, 04:25 PMThe program sucks.  History shows that we won't hire or keep the right coach.  We need to stop talking about it and accept the reality.  No more delusion.  Year in and year out we are worse than Memphis and a big maybe better than Vandy.

Against every SEC team, over the last 10 games we have a winning record against two teams.  Ole Miss and South Carolina must feel terrible about themselves.

We are not a good football program.  Full stop.  End of story.  Shut it the fuck down.

Why should we assume that the last 10 years, where we had a weirdo as AD who made the wrong hire at nearly every turn and the two worst coaches in program history (three if you count Smith's year), is a better representation than the 14 years before it when we were always competitive in our division and sometimes even nationally? Nothing structurally changed about our program or college football would have changed to make us a bottom feeder.  The only thing that held us back was one bad AD hire and a slew of poor coaching hires.

I mean, I don't think the Petrino years are who we truly are, but neither are the Burt/Chad years.  We should be middle of the pack, better than MSU, Ole Miss, and Missouri most of the time, a notch or two below Alabama and LSU but still able to beat them occasionally, and comparable to Aggy and sometimes Auburn.  If Nutt could accomplish that, surely someone else out there can.

Fair enough, go back 35 years.  We are still a 6-7 win a year team who struggles to beat mid level out of conference teams.

The point here isn't that Arkansas can't win big.  Sure, any team is capable of becoming a juggernaut.  Even in our best years we always manage to lose the important games.  At some point you are who you are.  And we are a program that never seems to get over the hump.  And the last 35 years have been not very good outside 2 Nutt years and 2 Petrino years.

hit_that_line

Frank was right. We should only consistently be ahead of South Carolina, the Mississippi schools, Kentucky, Vandy, Mizzou. That's it. Beat auburn 40% of the time. Rarely beat Bama, LSU etc unless they are in coaching upheaval. Conference is significantly tougher than the Petrino years and we lost to all the good teams we played then outside of LSU in 2010.

That's mostly correct, although I think the SEC is similar today to what Petrino faced, and much tougher than when Nutt was here.  We need a coach who will beat the teams beneath us most of the time, split with Auburn and Aggy, and win occasionally against Alabama, LSU, Georgia, etc.  This year the league is down, which is why our poor performance so far is so frustrating.  This was supposed to be one of those rare years when we had an opportunity to play over our heads and be better than the 7-5 or so which should probably be our baseline.

A mediocre program can play up to good when it's led well, and down to bottom tier when it's coached poorly.

So what you are saying is we should have kept Nutt?  ;D

What I'm saying is we should find someone who could get his results against a more difficult SEC.

I was bored yesterday and looked all this up to reply to someone on Twitter.

Since 1998 these are the average number of ranked (at the time we played) SEC opponents each coach faced here.

Nutt:  3.3 ranked SEC teams per year, average rank 14.13

BMFP:  4.25 ranked SEC teams per year, average rank 10.89

Smith:  3 ranked SEC teams, average rank 7

Burt:  5.4 ranked SEC teams (including all 8 in 2014), average rank 11.26

Dipshit:  4.0 ranked SEC teams, average rank 10

Pittman:  5.0 ranked SEC teams, average rank 9.67

Number 1 Teams Faced by Each:

Nutt: 2 in 10 years

BMFP:  3 in 4 years

Smith:  1 in 1 year

Burt:  4 in 5 years

Dipshit:  3 in 2 years

Pittman:  1 in 3 years.

Petrino proved that we could rise to #3 in the country AND be #3 in the SEC West at the same time.

We have little next level talent on this team though. None on either line. Maybe our running backs. McGlothern even probably won't screen great because of his size.

The 2010 team was our chance. Pissed the Bama game away when they were a little down. Defense couldn't stop air against Auburn. That team needed one more war daddy on each line and a decent DB or two.

Neither do most of the teams we'll play this year.  The ones that do have other flaws that counteract them.

Unless we get a whole lot better in a hurry we won't be able to take advantage.

I sure wish we had a team worth discussing this year instead of rehashing the past and figuring out our place in the college football world.

When you're doing that in-season, things ain't good.

I think if you look at Kentucky as a model for Arkansas football. Their coach didn't have super early success but generally it's been fairly good for them. A few derp derp moments but they have also had some 9 and 10 win seasons if I'm not mistaken.

AND

Get rid of the divisions in the SEC and see how this shakes out before we totally move away from Pittman.

Won 10 games twice. Rest has been horrific. So double digit wins twice a decade then .500 football every other year. Gross.
