That's fair, but a whole lot different than what you said above. 

That's mostly correct, although I think the SEC is similar today to what Petrino faced, and much tougher than when Nutt was here.  We need a coach who will beat the teams beneath us most of the time, split with Auburn and Aggy, and win occasionally against Alabama, LSU, Georgia, etc.  This year the league is down, which is why our poor performance so far is so frustrating.  This was supposed to be one of those rare years when we had an opportunity to play over our heads and be better than the 7-5 or so which should probably be our baseline. 

A mediocre program can play up to good when it's led well, and down to bottom tier when it's coached poorly. 

the part about the sec being much easier when nutt was coach is pretty much a myth, and i'm no nutt lover. the sec west could be said to have been down a bit.

from 2003-07 the sec won the natty 3 times (lsu twice) and auburn, as much as i hate to say it, was completely jobbed by going undefeated in 2004 and got left out because an overated ou team had the heisman winner.

Add an average of two more ranked SEC teams to his schedule every year in place of the versions of Ole Miss and Miss State he used to face and tell me his record wouldn't have been about two games worse per year on average. 

Ole Miss and Mississippi State were both worse then than now most of Nutt's tenure.  Alabama was far worse for the entirety of Nutt's career here.  Auburn was probably about the same or a little better then, LSU similar.  And Nutt didn't have to face aTm.

Yep in the Nutt years Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia were mainly the movers and shakers where as if we're being honest the SEC WEST was fairly manageable. We played Tenn every year and managed to win some of those games. Other than Spurrier the vast majority of the SEC coaches at the time where meat heads. The SEC was ripe for the taking by bringing in driven intelligent coaches (enter Saban and Urban Meyer to the chat)

Alabama was an overrated has-been boomer program where they tried to hire anyone that had smelled The Bear's farts. LSU only emerged when they hired Saban, prior to that they weren't much better if any than Arkansas. It isn't just in essence but an utter reality that Saban has built two national championship caliber programs in the SEC that are still current day perennial contenders. That I'm going to say is unheard of.
