December 6.  1969.  54 years ago.  At this time we were pulling into our driveway in Little Rock.  We had driven back from Fayetteville after sitting thru the Big Shootout.  I cried a good bit of the way.  My old man had been so worked up on the way up he pulled into a gas station and bought a carton of camels and chainsmoked there thru the game and all the way home.  He had been quit two years.  He smoked another 14 years, five packs a day.  It killed him.  That fucking game killed him.  Had we won I think he would have tossed them. 

It was such a huge fucking game.  Texas 1. Arkansas 2.  Fucking Penn State and whining Joe Paterno fucking whining his kiddie raping ass all week. Nixon.  Billy Graham.  The first game ever in December after Thanksgiving.  Roone Arledge couldn't have played it better and it sprinboarded his career with abc. 

Fucking James Street.  We had it won.  And then we didn't.  Broke my fucking heart. 

That 69 team was so fucking great.  Bill Montgomery, Burnett, Cliff Powell Chuck Ficus, Bruce James.

Come to think of it, that game against Ole Miss had extreme parallels to our later clunker against Liberty...a great defensive coach (Odom, Freeze) put together a great game plan to anticipate and counter exactly what the offense was going to do, and the offense could not or would not adjust during the game.

I was 15 years old, and laid on the floor at our house and watched it on a black and white tv.   By myself. I cried.  It was also the first day I realized I really cared about the Razorbacks.  Made a fan out of me.

Always hated James Street until I met him.  Very nice fellow who respected the hell out of Arkansas.

That 68 season was the first I had as a kid that underdtood some football and that Sugar Bowl had so much hope for 69.  I was 9.  September seemed a lifetime away. 

We were at that Wichita State game too.  JFB didn't want to play it.  WSU needed the paycheck.  I remember the sole survivor of the crash went out with the captains; he was on crutches.  I think the starters played one series.  It was the strangest game I can recall.  It's the only game we left early. 

The shootout taught me a lot.  The Freddie steinmark cancer story broke soon after.  Jimmy Street and others said we were the toughest game they ever had.  The real disappointment hounded that team.  Losing to Archie manning in the sugar bowl sucked balls.  1970 started with the disappointing loss to Stanford and ended with the beat down of the shootout 2.  The team chose to not go to a bowl and that was it.

The Wichita State game was my first to go to ever.  I was 5.  My dad was a high school coach at the time, and I got to go with him and his team. I was excited to be in the stadium.  I also remember that my dad and I got in trouble with mom cos we left my sweater at the game.

You listened to the game with call by the late great Bud Campbell.  Only a game or two a year on TV.  We all watched JFB every Sunday and he taught the state about Razorback football.  And Orville Henry documented it.  They built the program.

you are exactly right on all counts;  loved Bud Campbell and read Orville Henry every day from a fairly young age

It's amazing to read this thread and it's "I cried", "my dad cried", "my family cried". I think EVERYONE who watched that game understood what it meant, to both teams and fans. It was just soul-crushing.

Living in Texas, we would try to get the games on the car radio. Sometimes we could, sometimes we couldn't. Many times we'd drive around the neighborhood because driving would make the signal come in better. At least when we'd play Texas teams, if we didn't go to the games, they would be on the radio. Non-conference games were a bitch to get on the radio. Franks show was on some weird channel at like 11pm and there wasn't DVR/VCR back then, so we had to stay up to watch it. It was must-see TV.
